Zapper: One Wicked Cricket!
Customer Ratings: 3 stars

I had high hopes for Zapper. I was a frogger fan, and zapper promised to raise the frogger fun to a new level. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite true.

Available for most platforms, Zapper is a cricket that can only hop in four directions, just like frogger. You practice your timing to hop around enemies, work through mazes and grab special items.

It's sort of cute at first. The graphics are nice, and the cut scenes are funny. And yes, it's frogger like, with the timing of your hops and the simple gameplay. While frogger just wanted to "get to the other side", Zapper is out to save his baby brother, who was stolen by Maggie, the Magpie Queen.

But I'm sorry to say that it gets wearying pretty quickly. Just like frogger, when you get hit you die but were frogger was a single board to restart, zapper has long, drawn out mazes. You can checkpoint along the way, but it can still be frustrating. It comes down to memorizing the paths of the monsters and executing the matching sequence.

And while frogger was about a frog getting to his destination, and the 'blind world' not even noticing him and squashing him in its own race to get somewhere, Zapper loses some of that as well. Frogger was about the struggle you put out to get through a world that goes on with or without you. The logs weren't hostile, the cars weren't aiming for you. They were just doing what they were doing and you had to understand that and work with them. Dodging traffic is something we can all understand and relate to. But the travails of Zapper just didn't strike me in the same fashion.

Perhaps good for kids, or for people who do enjoy avoidance-games

We bought this game for our 4-year old thinking it would be a fun game for mom, dad and kidlet to play together. It's visually interesting with cute sounds, but that's about it. Game handling isn't at all intuitive, and movements are jerky. You make a jump and are constantly hitting the wrong button. At first I chalked it up to my lack of motor skills (HA!), but we put even the most experienced gamer behind the controls, and he threw his hands up in frustration. We felt less like morons when our friend's 8-year old son came over and said, "You got ZAPPER? Haahhaaahaa! This game bites!"

This is a wonderful, fun game. Not as boring or as hard as Frogger. It is great for kids, my 4 year old loves it, and I enjoy playing it too.

Customer Ratings: 5 stars

NEXTEK's HDD was the only choice for a less expensive hard drive for the XBox 360 Slim for me. As a PC gamer, and not knowing much about the XBox, I spent hours researching for the best hard drive to get. I took a chance on one with ZERO reviews, and I am happy I did. Took it right from the package, and after a quick inspection, right into the game console. The XBox recognized it immediately and was able to load Battlefield 4 onto my son's XBox 360 Slim with no problems. Western Digital Hard Drive ensures that I will be able to play all the old basic XBox games. Even comes in a XBox 360, labeled "Authentic Product". I was expecting a generic box, so this was a nice surprise.

Word of advice to Amazon, as this came from your warehouse, you just might want to start marking these electronic component packages as "fragile". Nothing like hearing the UPS driver open the door to my front porch and then the THUD! as my hard drive hit the floor. F'n morons.

The biggest flaw with the port of Bully would be the controls, but these are easily alleviated by using a gamepad, ideally the Xbox 360 controller itself. Other than that the game runs pretty well on the PC, and is just as fun as it was on the console. The gameplay is varied enough, and the story has the classic Rockstar tongue in cheek satire, and the sandbox world is fun to explore.

Good games taken with another offer for my steam library. I love it a lot, it's a good game. Bye.

Best Deals for Bully: Scholarship Edition

This game is exactly what you'd expect. It's a GTA-esque game with a school as a setting. The theming is nothing short of amazing. Every school clique is very different from one another, and the music itself is great. My only issue with this game is that it was originally a PS2 title, then ported to the PC and Wii, and you can clearly tell it doesn't run how it should, even with a good PC. The menus, for example, are all navigated with the keyboard, and if you want to use a gamepad, it might be a little confusing toggling it (try using the left and right keys on your keyboard on the "control settings", it took me a while to figure out)

The game is great, and if you're willing to overlook these non-game-breaking issues, you're in for a great ride. I managed to 100% the game in exactly 24 hours, but I had prior knowledge of the game, since I own the PS2 version.

Honest reviews on Bully: Scholarship Edition

The code works on Steam and Bully is a fun game to kill time, I really like the funny cut-scenes and the art.

Peter Jackson's King Kong - Xbox 360 Review

Peter Jackson's King Kong - Xbox 360
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
This game is clearly associated with the 2005 movie. How can we tell? The full name of the game is Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of the Movie. Subtle!

The game was made with complete cooperation of Peter Jackson he let the gaming team have access to the CGI and sets from the movie, and the game was made at the exact same time.

The game plays very much like being in a movie, with smooth slides between cinematic scenes and action sections. That being said, the game of course is FAR more action-oriented than any movie would be. In a movie you might fight off a group of creatures for a short period of time. In the game, of course, the hordes come in numerous, almost endless, waves.

This is more than just a beast-slaying game, though. There's a bit of thought involved. For example, if a gigantic dinosaur comes running at you, you don't have to try to slay it in straight-out combat. You can instead kill another random creature that is nearby, and the dinosaur will decide to go munch on it.

There are a few levels that you can play as Kong, but really for most of the game you are playing as a normal human in a band of friends. The various friends around you can either be helpful or REALLY annoying, depending on their mood. There are many times that I was tempted to snipe at my "friends" instead of the Giant Centipede or whatever the monster of the moment was.

The graphics are of course awesome. From the ocean waves to the murky dark caves, from the detail on the faces to the detail on the monsters' teeth, you get immersed in a high quality version of the movie. Again, this is to be expected, as the game designers got direct feeds of the movie graphic files.

The sound is also well done, with the sounds and feel of the movie. You get an immersive experience, drawing around you what the movie is all about. Danger, gloom, crashing waves and thunderous primal screams.

I have to admit that I found some of the puzzles a little tedious. Walking around and around a post to open a door was silly enough the first time, but for me to have to do it repeatedly was a bit much. Also, there were a few times that monsters seemed to get "stuck" in an area and I had to in essence go and prod them a few times for them to come out and properly attack me. I suppose not all monsters are highly intelligent :)

The game is definitely one that targets adrenaline-rush types. The sounds are loud and pounding from bellows to cries of panic to screeches. The video is always jumping between dark caves to dark stairs to fiery bushes and things swooping down at you. You're kept off balance and rarely get a moment to breathe.

I did like how the game is set up like a movie. There aren't on screen health bars, ammo counters or anything else. You hit a button to hear a verbal check of your ammo. You talk to your friends to find out how they are. When you get hurt, your screen starts to go red and fuzzy, and you even hear "angels sing".

If I'm going to have any complaint about this game, it's really a personal one I like games with a balance between hyped-up tension and more calm puzzle/investigating. There was really no break here, it was just non-stop thundering noise and attacking monsters. I'm sure most people thrive on that :)

Well recommended for those seeking a high action fix!

As has been discussed since the game King Kong was announced, Peter Jackson approached Michel Ancel to create this game due to his work on one of my favorite games, Beyond Good and Evil. When I heard the Michel Ancel was working on a high profile game, I jumped at the chance to play it. This was one of the first Xbox 360 games I purchased and the second I beat.

One thing Michel Ancel is extraodinarily good at doing is creating a living world, populated with rich characters and terrific scenery. He proved this in Beyond Good and Evil, giving various different gameplay functions to mess around with, as well as terrific characters that could bring a smile to your face. King Kong continues this and gives us a fully realized Skull Island as our playground. Ancel took away any hint of an interface. There's no life, ammo, or aiming device. Its all natural and you have to rely on vocal cues about the ammo, realize that one or two bites from a T-rex is going to kill you and estimate on how you throw your spears.

At first I was worried about the lack of aiming target, but the game compensates for this by being pretty open. Hitting a target really isn't too difficult as long as you are aiming in the general area. Playing in first person really helps get you in the shoes of the protagonist, and hearing the terrifying roar of a T-rex (or V-Rex as they are called in this game, to which I say, WTF?) behind you and knowing that he's there but knowing also that if you stop to look you will be dead really helps sink in this feeling. Its a survival of the fittest and you had better keep your wits about you.

Graphically, the game is beautiful. The textures in the land really help present an island teeming with life. The enemies are done pretty well over-all. One of the problems with the current form of normal mapping is that sometimes things can look shiny or slimy. This is duly noticeable in the hair of people. Naomi Watt's character's hair looks shiny and slimy instead of natural. The art direction is stunning too which helps cover-up any graphical short-comings there maybe.

The audio is stunning as well. The voice actors from the movie reprise their roles and unlike some movie video games, it doesn't sound like the actors are just talking into a mic to get paid. The screams, the bit of dialogue there is, it all fits into a nice package surrounded by terrific dinosaur sounds, ambient music and a terrific score. The only part of the audio that became annoying to me was when you are seriously injured. Hearing the angels choir became annoying after awhile.

Playing as Kong is a delight, mostly. Instead of making it difficult, the game-developers wanted to give players a sense of strength and reckless abandon that you don't have playing as a human. And they succeed. Kong is vicious, you don't have to worry about timing anything or about hiding. Charge in there, destroy things, climb on walls, jump from ledge to ledge, break T-Rex's mouths open. Its all there, easy to pull off, and makes playing as Kong a joy instead of a chore.

Once you get off Skull Island is where the game lost a little. It felt as if New York wasn't as developed as it could be and it was over in about 10 minutes. Pretty much a let down but I'm sure that it was done this way to keep any surprises from the movie leaking out.

Now, as great as this game is, there is a major problem. Its damn short. It took me about 5-6 hours to play it. Since its an incredibly linear video game with no room for exploration, you pretty much have no choice but play it quickly. It is a visually stimulating and exciting journey, but a very quick one. In fact, I don't know if I can justify the $60 price tag. Its a game that begs to be played and you can get it down in one weekend without realizing it.

Michel Ancel succeeds in creating another exciting game. If it weren't in such a hurry to get out before the movie, maybe it could have been a bit more flushed out. As it is, the game is a terrific way to spend 6 hours of your life. But, as to the $60 out of your pocket, that's debatable.

Best Deals for Peter Jackson's King Kong - Xbox 360

I will be honest, I was not a huge fan of the movie and wasn't initially interested in this game. I purchased it recently because I had read that it was an easy way to get 1000 achievement points (just play it all the way through), and because it had considerably dropped in price to less than $20.

So, with low expectations, I have to say that I was initially pleasantly surprised. After some clips from the opening of the movie, the game starts off with you playing through the scene of them landing on Skull Island. The voice acting is great, as I keep hearing Jack Black making all his silly comments about capturing footage of everything as we move through the island. The graphics are good, as the character models look very much like their real-life counterparts and the island is rendered in pretty full detail. However, I would not put these graphics anywhere near Gears or some of the newer 360 games, but they are decent enough to hold your interest in the game. The game mechanics are pretty easy to pick up, you either have a gun or you can pick up a spear. Soon you learn to catch the spear on fire and use it to burn patches of thicket in order to clear the way or fend off creatures. There are also some other puzzle-like aspects, such as stabbing bait and throwing it to distract creatures, or needing to find the handles for opening doors.

From there, though, I found the game getting rather repetitive and old quickly. You run through a series of areas fighting and evading various creatures and finding a way out, only to get to more areas where you have to fight and evade creatures.

Finally, after what seemed like an exhaustive amount of play, I got to a stage where I was able to play as Kong. I felt the Kong sequence seemed like it had been tacked on as a gimmick rather than an integral part of the game. First of all, it switches to third-person while you're Kong, so the gameplay is totally different. Secondly, it just took me through a series of climbing, jumping, and swinging sequences, which were all accomplished by pressing 1 button to do everything, so it felt more like a glorified cutscene than actual gameplay. Lastly, I had to fight a flying boss, but due to the third person camera angle I could never face the right direction or time it right to punch him each time he swooped in at me. After multiple attempts I finally beat the boss, but ended up feeling more frustrated than thrilled by it.

The next level has me playing as Jack again, and I frankly haven't summoned up the motivation to play any further yet. I understand there are more Kong scenes coming up where you fight dinosaurs, so that might be fun, but the idea of having to play through another couple of hours as Jack doesn't seem worth it to me.

I recently acquired a few other new games for my 360, and I just find it hard to want to go back to this one to finish it. Perhaps there will be some time when I'll decide to finish this game, but for now I have shelved it and don't have a strong desire to keep playing.

All in all, I would say this game is decent for the price and can provide a couple of hours of entertainment, but don't expect to get hooked on it because you will likely lose interest fairly quickly.

Honest reviews on Peter Jackson's King Kong - Xbox 360

King Kong game wasn't really a great game or a terrible one, hence the 3 star rating. The most impressive aspect of this game was how gorgeous gaming enviroment was. The rocks and grass were almost touchable through the tv screen! The only draw back about the graphics were how the actual humans were rendered. They were not was "realistic" as the enviroment that the game was.

Comparing human graphics between two games, the humans in Condemned: Criminal Origins were more realistic, smoother, and less choppy. The game play wasn't too bad, and the game wasn't that hard to complete. Sometimes, things would get a bit repetitive but that's how the game goes. Playing the game in 5.1 surround sound is a plus, you can hear the rain from all directions and when a character talks to you'll hear their voice coming out from a particular speaker from their direction.

Overall, the game is not worth the high price of $59.99. However, if you're bored it is a game to take a shot at renting for a couple days or so. Long lives the king....

That's what brought me to this game too, however I was not expecting a mildly entertaining game. I was pleased to find this game was okay to play... This is a basic spaceship game where you fly around destroying objects.

No saving functions, just 3 lives and game over when you die 3 times, and that's frustrating. It took forever but I finally destroyed the first boss using dodging tactics to defeat him.

I never got farther than the third level, where ground level tanks are waiting to blast you.

a very basic shoot-'em-up with only 6 stages. i found it fairly easy with the exception of the 4th boss which is annoyingly difficult. after you beat it there's a hard mode with more bullets but not all that much harder. as an early game boy game it's not bad, but there are a lot better shoot-'em-ups, even for game boy.

...

I do own both these game and have played them extensively and let me put down what I think I like about both games so that it could help you decide which one to buy. Personally, I would recommend buying both :

First let me start off my saying both are excellent games but both are truly 2 different games. For those of you who are use to madden, dont think you can jump right in and play nfl2k3, and vice versa, both play completely different.

Madden2003:

-----------

This game is more for the casual football player. Madden is very polished and has options galore. If your into stat tracking, Madden is the game for you then. This game is very deep in all areas which will appeal to many people. It is truly the game for the person who just wants to pick up and play and not really have to think football. It is more of a family game in some aspects because of it's simplicty.

Plus':

-----

Graphics : Very good graphics, player models are done uniquely and stadiums are dead on perfect in this game. Also nice touches to the field textures and postplay animations. The game is very polished graphically, it really looks like a masterpiece.

Gameplay : very easy to pick up gameplay. Momentum based physics adds a lot to this game where it keeps the game realistic in terms of how players get hit and how they respond to tackles. This is truly more of an offensive minded game and that equates to more fun for some. Stat tracking is the best bar none in madden and the options can't be matched in any other game.

Sound : The football sounds and extra sounds are done very well in this game. Al Micheals and John Madden give the game a professional feel when annoucing althougth sometimes they get reptitive.

Minus'

-----

The only drawback in this game would be that the game is more cpu based than user based. So you can do everything right but if the cpu decides that it wants to complete a pass this down, well , it'll complete a pass that down. Sometimes the game may feel a bit too scripted.

---------------------------------------------------------------

NFL2K3

-------

This game is truly for the football minded technician or football minded coach. In this game, you have to know how to read the defensive formations, the kind of offensive plays you run, and the kind of players/teams you control. The best word I can use to describe this game is INTENSITY, because it is truly like you are playing an NFL game. This game is more of a user based game, so everything is up to the player rather than the computer to succeed. It's like putting your football mind into each player you control.

Plus':

GRAPHICS : Excellent player models and stadiums. Uses the ESPN license so it's based off of SPORTSCENTER and ESPN telecast, very profesional tv style look to it. Excellent Animations. Excellent player faces.

GAMEPLAY : More user based than cpu based. You must know football to win at this game. It's more of a head coaches game controlling the players which adds intensity and sense of professionalism to it. Passing and running the ball must be done correctly or you will eat turf. Defense is incredibly protrayed in this game where user can control any aspect of the defender. Gameplay wise this is more of a Defensive minded game.

Sounds : Top Notch second to none. The annoucers in this series have always been excellent and you really like to listen to them. Football sounds are done well too and crowd variance is teriffic.

Minus':

Only drawback for some could be that the learning curve for this game is very high. Don't expect to get this game and figure it out in a few minutes. You can't just mash buttons together and expect to win. It is truly for the football fanatic.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Well I hope this helps. Again, I would recommend buying both games since they play so different. I would compare these to games to say buying either a BMW or a MERCEDES. Both are great cars but have their own unqiue qualities to them that make them great rides. Enjoy!

Being a die-hard Madden series gamer, I must put in my two cents, and hopefully get this game into the hands of one more Madden fan.

I have played Madden since the early days of its creation. To this day, I haven't found a better simulation of the NFL and its players. You see, if you are truly an NFL fan, then Madden 2003 is the game for you without a doubt. Simulation. That point can't be stressed enough. Most people argue that the game has nothing "new" or it hasn't changed the style of the game. However they couldn't be more wrong. That's why the game is so great, they know how to do what they do, and they do it the best. Madden doesn't have to add new things each year, they simply improve on last year's edition. Being a true Madden and NFL fan, I enjoy more than anything improvements on small details. This is what I can't wait for in this newest edition...

*Mini-camp to see who really deserves to start and who should be cut.

*More options when creating a team; more colors, improved originality in designs, an extensive gallery of logos.

*Online play

*An even better system for passing...more accurate lobs/bullets.

*An engine that runs a little faster adjusting it more towards reality...last years was a little slow with player reactions/movements.

You simply cannot re-invent football, it is what it is. You can only improve how close to real it is each year. There is a reason this happens to be a number-one seller year after year. Give it a shot, you just may find it addicting. Have fun!

Best Deals for Madden NFL 2003

What's not to like about Madden? Well I feel that there are still flaws in the gameplay that have been around for the last 2 years that haven't been fixed.

1) Fieldgoals and punts by computer. The computer is money all the time. 58 field goal in a blizzard with a 15 mph cross wind? No problem. The football doesn't just creep over the bar either , it clears by 20 yards! I swear the computer could hit a 70 yarder. This is unrealistic.

2) Blocking punts or field goals. This is impossible. I have never seen this on PS2 and I play alot! Given that this is quite a regular occurence in the real game and was possible on Sega genesis version of Madden in the early 1990s this is rather strange.

3) Hard too run between tackles. Good yardage in this area is still tough going. I can't remember the last time I ran over a linebacker and busted a big gain down the middle. You always seem to get gummed up behing your offensive line.

4) Have you ever seen a defensive lineman engage his opposite number and then immediatly fall backwards on the ground with his legs and arms in the air like a dead ant? This happens frequently, especially on pass protection. Often 3/4 of my defensive line are on the ground a second or 2 after the snap!! You would think they were 150 weaklings.

5)Wide receivers still not able to get good separation from dbs. Often u will connect on a long pass as your man gets behind db, only to be tackled after a step or 2. There is not enough YAC.

If they could fix these problems I would have given it 5 stars. However the game has been improved in many areas , and overall is more realisitic. Still worth it.

Honest reviews on Madden NFL 2003

Madden 2003 has hit the stores and I have to say that this year Madden will be the cream of the crop. I have played '03 and I am impressed by the great improvements in the AI and computer teams. Never again will I have a 16-0 season in the franchise more.

The biggest and best change in this game has to be the addition of the preseason in Franchise mode. I love the fact that you can play your rookie to see who's scouting report was good and who was slightly off. Going along with that when you draft players this year you do not see their ratings, just a scouting report with a projected round and some comments like "This guy will tackle everything in sight!" This is a great improvement as it makes the franchise mode much more difficult and more realistic.

The addition of the mini-camp mode is fun and will help you fine-tune some skills that are hard to practice in game mode or in the practice mode. I also think that the addition of Al Michaels is great!

The one thing that I could have done without is the half-time cheerleader show. There is nothing more boring than computer generated cheerleaders doing the same dance each half time!

All in all another great game from EA Sports!! Don't miss this one, as there are enough new changes to keep anyone interested until Madden 2004 comes out!

The Madden series gets better every year and this edition is the best ever

GRAPHICS amazing. Players look exactly as they do in real life their height, weight, face, even equipment accessories such as gloves and arm bands

SOUND satisfactory. John Madden & Al Michaels are much better than the old Madden & Summeral tandem. Plus the commentary is more timely now. For example, instead of the default "great touchdown" they will say something situationally relevant like "that's his second touchdown today"

GAMEPLAY perfect. The game runs slow enough that you can actually read blocks, watch the defensive coverage develop, etc. Its amazing to run the ball and actually follow a pulling guard, versus other games where you just look for daylight

OVERALL amazing game. Not only do you get the typical game mode, but you also get mini-camp mode and 2-minute drill which are brief and highly addictive. And best of all ONLINE PLAY! That's right, you can challenge anyone in the world to a game of Madden at anytime

Board games are one of the greatest family group activities of modern times. Getting the board out, finding the pieces, rembering all the rules, deciding who sits where and goes when, and finally to end up with someone quiting over a dice roll that slid off the board. Yup good times!! Just think after all that fun you get to throw most of the pieces back in the box and shove it in the corner of the closet, for another 6 months. OR YOU COULD JUST BUY FAMILY GAME NIGHT FOR 360!! Thank goodness someone from EA finally figured out buying these games seperately from Xbox live at $10 a piece was ridiculous. With Black friday, and a slow economy you should be able to pick up this game for around $20, and that is part of the reason why I rated this game so high. Not only can you play the classic games with all the rules intact and "a rule/move" assist from the game, but you can play the wildcard variations as well. Again the game shows you what moves are allowed (or not) based on the game mode your playing so there is no cheating. You can play local or over Xbox Live and your Xbox live Avatars become your representatives in the game. The number of people that can play is based on the game your playing, and there is no split screen everyone plays the same board. My wife and Kids actually play this game without me (4 players max) so you know it must be good if my wife is picking up an Xbox controller. Here is the official list/ write up.

Join your host Mr. Potato Head as you play your favorite Hasbro games including CONNECT FOUR, SCRABBLE, BATTLESHIP, YAHTZEE, BOGGLE, as well as exciting new versions created for Xbox LIVE® Arcade in Hasbro Family Game Night.

The only thing that could make this game any better is more addon games and lower Xbox live prices. I understand the game developers need to make money, so they should add more games to the title via Xbox live but limit the price to $5 a game. The only game they should make 800 points or 10 bucks is monopoly and they should totally rework that failed stand alone version to play as the current games on Family Game night works now.

Pros: Should be able to get it for $20, Games are fun and everyone in the family can play, all the other stuff I wrote earlier.

Cons: Family playing 360 takes up all your valuable first person shooter time, forcing you to watch reality TV.

This is an awesome two player game. Me and my wife have spent hours on this. The re-playability is very high. Battleship is probably our favorite, but they are all fun (Boggle, Connect 4, Sorry Sliders, Sorry, Scrabble, and Yahtzee). We have played them all quite a bit. I do like how you can play different styles of the game. It mixes it up a little bit which is good. I paid $20 for it and it was worth every penny. This game would be great for kids 6+ as well. My five year old daughter is still a little bit too young to play it, but in another year or so I'm sure she could play a couple of the games on it.

I bought this game as a Christmas present for my wife. She was always telling me that I got to spend all the time on the Xbox and she would like a game that she could play too. Well, this is what I found and it turned out to be a winner. She even enjoys playing with folks when we have a dinner party or when her parents were, she introduced them to this game. My only complaint is how few games come as part of this game. I wish there was a way to add more to it. As far as I can tell. there is no way to supplement the included games. Oh well. There's plenty to keep her occupied for quite some time and for $20.00, I'm not upset.

My teen boys and husband love this game -especially battleship. A very fun way to play some old favorite games.

Allow me to preface this with an apology for the length of this review. This bundle made up of four individual items, and as a result I wrote about them all. If you already know what all the individual items are and just want to know if this bundle is a good value then the simple answer is yes.

While I would like to give this Item a five star rating (for myself, it is a solid 4.5 stars) at best I can give it is a 3 for reasons stated in the descriptions of the items.

For those that want to know more about the individual items and the package itself please read on...

This bundle of item is only as useful as you make it. For myself, It is a great value but for you it may not be. It really depends on your online play style and what you do with it.

As an online gamer I enjoy talking to other players, and I am fairly active on my messaging. Not only that, but I do play online quite regularly, I buy games online, as well as additional content. For me, there is nothing in this bundle that I do not use, so the value is definitely there when compared to buying them separately (all prices are new products, not used).

1 year XBOX live subscription: $60 retail/$40-$50 online XBOX Live Chat Pad: $30 Retail/$20-25 Online XBOX Live Microphone: $20 Retail/$15 Online 400 Microsoft Points: $5 retail/$5 Online

As you can see, at best you are saving $55 off of retail, at worst about $20. And this is where the subjective part comes in. This is only a value if you actually take advantage of everything this has to offer. I can assure you that many people online don't. For those that do, if you can get it for less then $70 (I picked it up at $60) I would highly recommend it.

Now to the Actual products:

1) XBOX Live Gold Subscription 1 year: There is nothing to say here, other then you need it if you plan to play multiplayer games online. If you do not plan to play online then this package is not for you.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Turtle Beach Ear Force ZLa Gaming Headset isn't meant to be an audiophile headset. That's fine. Most gamers aren't willing to pay a big price tag for a headset, so the headphones are constructed out of inexpensive, but effective plastic.

The headset sounds decent, but will distort when played at high volume. The microphone also does the job with no issues. Headset volume and microphone muting can be controlled using a small pod that's mounted on the cable which clips to the users shirt. The headset will plug directly into my iPhone or iPad and allows voice input as well as audio. There's a splitter cable that can be used to attach to systems that have separate headphone and microphone jacks.

While the headset can be adjusted to fit on a variety of head sizes, the ear pieces sit on top of the ear and depending on how well they fit, can become uncomfortable after extended periods of use. It became uncomfortable after about 15 minutes for me, but my daughter didn't have any problems with discomfort.

At the price point, I can forgive a lot of shortcomings, but the stiffness of the cable is probably my biggest problem with the headset. The cable is made from a fairly cheap feeling plastic and tends to stay in the shape from the original packaging and becomes snarled very easily. A more flexible cable that doesn't retain the shape would be a much needed improvement.

Another shortcoming is the headphone jack. It pokes straight out from the device and tends to get in the way when holding an iPad. Worse still, the plug doesn't make good contact inside the device and will cut in and out when the plug moves, a problem that's greatly exacerbated by the cheap plastic cable.

Summary:

Probably just fine for most gaming applications, but the stiffness of the cable causes unnecessary annoyance.

On the lighter side, the current (10/22/2013) product description from the manufacturer is a delightful mish-mash of nonsensical marketese.

Especially amusing are the system requirements section. It says:

Somehow, I don't think I need a rice cooker and a cotton candy maker to use the headset. Or maybe that's why I was having so many problems with the cable. I didn't have the required 6-piece steak set. :)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My son has been using this headset for Skyping while playing Minecraft. He is very happy with them. He says they are more comfortable than the headset he was using before (a similarly inexpensive set). I see that other reviewers are saying that they are not comfortable for larger heads... maybe they were made just for 11 year old boys!

He also likes that the microphone boom swivels. His other headset did not have this feature.

The sound quality, both from the ear pieces and the microphone, has been fine for his purposes.

They do not appear to be particularly durable, though.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a terrific headset for under $30. Sound quality is very good for the price. I use a headset primarily to make Skype calls or to participate in online classes. For that use, this headset is ideal. I don't play computer games, so I asked my son to try it out. He usually uses a much more expensive headset. He said that this would be a good headset to use when he travels, or as a back up if the more expensive one broke.

The one shortcoming I experienced is that I found it to be a little too tight, but I have a big head (size 8 hat). Most headsets are a bit tight fitting for me.

Honest reviews on Turtle Beach Ear Force ZLa Gaming Headset (TBS-6005-01)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I wear a men's size XL (extra large) hat, which puts me in about the top 1/4 of male head sizes. Despite its rather large/bulky size, there is no way to adjust this headset so that it fits comfortably. The only available adjustment changes its height, but barely affects its width. It presses hard on my ears and is uncomfortable within a minute. That's unacceptable for any headset, but especially for a gaming headset one might wear a long time. Users with smaller head sizes might find it comfy.

Sound quality when listening is very good for vocal clarity and loudness. For music, it is good in the bass and midrange but lacks clarity in the treble. The microphone is reasonably clear, very sensitive (picks up even quiet mouth movements), and nicely adjustable. So with good speech quality in both directions and good loudness, it's a good choice for smaller-headed people for gaming.

Despite its narrow fit, the outer size of the headset is so big, one might look a bit goofy wearing it. So, not recommended for a videoconference, and not a great choice for travel.

I wasn't expecting top of the line for $26, but this headset is awful. The cord has to be in the same exact position or the sound fades in and out. When I made calls with it, the people I called could barely hear me and the microphone transmitted all the background noise in my house. It was such that the call was so loud it hurt their ears yet they couldn't hear what I was saying. It only took me 2 phone calls to decide to send this back.

Extreme G-3 is perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, at least for me. After playing the first and second ones (both were only mediocre), I wasn't expecting anything spectacular from this installment on the PS2. But man, when I booted it up I was instantly hooked. It sports some truly amazing graphics, and the overall speed keeps you coming back for more. The framerate is excellent, even in two player mode, and there's plenty to unlock and discover. One of the best games of the year in my book, go buy it.

Seeing as 2001 was such a huge year for gaming, it makes sense that some highly worthwhile titles would get passed over. Unfortunately, two outstanding PS2 racing games from the same company (Acclaim) suffered this fate, one being the superlative Burnout, and the other being Extreme-G 3.

I can't help but think that many gamers wrote this off as a Wipeout clone, or figured it was of the same quality as the two preceding N64 games, but that's really too bad. Yes, XG3 is in fact influenced by Wipeout, but it has enough differing elements to make it quite a worthy competitor for the title of Best Futuristic Racer. In XG3, you race some Akira-style jet-cycles around some spectacular tracks, in a mad supersonic dash to cross the finish line. What sets this game apart from other racers are the weapons/turbo/shield system, the unmatched sense of speed, and the vertigo-inducing, gorgeous circuits.

At the outset of Career Mode, your bike (which is a dead ringer for the Lightcycles from the film Tron) is outfitted with a standard cannon and shield. As you fly around the rollercoaster-like tracks, there are purple and green strips to drive over, which refill your ammunition and shields, respectively. What makes the races more strategical than most is that your shield and turbo both draw energy from the same source. Use all the energy for turbo, and you might find yourself without a shield, making you an easy target for the weapons of other bikes, and you better not hit the walls, or else. Save all the energy for your shield, and you'll find yourself in last place pretty quickly. This is a wonderful innovative touch that makes every race a constant chessmatch, albeit at 600+ miles per hour. Oh yes use your ammo wisely, or you may find yourself on an opponent's tail with no way to take him (or her) out. I must also mention the amazing thing that happens when you break the sound barrier...but I'll leave that for you to discover yourself. The bikes handle great, but I highly recommend configuring the controls, which are completely customizable, thankfully. I remapped the turbo and fire buttons to R1 and L1 it works perfectly and is much more comfortable.

The track designs are nothing less than beautiful, inspired, clever works that will leave your stomach in knots and your mind in awe. Whether it be the Blade Runner-esque Astradaitoshi (complete with rain effects, full moon, and neon billboards.....and at some points the skyscrapers go horizontal!), the sunset-drenched Nuon Harbor, or my personal favorite, Oceania (with a hair-raising vertical loop we're talking straight up and straight down here and transparent underwater tunnels), each one is a unique and detail-filled challenge. Yes, there are only ten tracks, but they're so diverse and magnificent it doesn't matter. I'd rather have ten highly polished and diverse tracks with no slowdown, even at 1000 mph than twice that many with repetitive or mirrored tracks.

As you progress through Career Mode, you earn credits which can then be spent to upgrade your bike, whether it be a more powerful engine, a high range of weapons (ranging from heat-seeking missiles to mines to an electro-magnetic pulse), or nifty items like an extra shield generator or an ammo or shield scoop, which enables you to gain an additional energy supply from the strips on the track. You also progress through several leagues, each with its own speed class. You end up racing the same tracks in each league, but since the speed class is upgraded each time, it's like racing them anew. There is also a time attack mode which nets you extra credits (hint: beat the lap record for each track and watch your required finishing place drop in league races). Another interesting twist is the Two-Player Career Mode, in which you and a friend work in tandem through the circuits. It's a very welcome cooperative feature. There is also a more typical two-player mode, which is just as sharp as single-player, and just as fun.

All told, there's a lot to like here. The increasing difficulty of Career Mode isn't conquered easily, and the multiplayer features add a lot of gameplay. XG3 doesn't seem to be getting quite the attention it deserves. Its sense of speed is intoxicating, its graphics unbelievable, and its fun factor immediate and sky-high. The sensation of traveling faster than the speed of sound never gets old. Next to Burnout, XG3 is the best arcade-style PS2 racer to date.

If you trun all the lights off the in the room and stare at the screen hard while playing this game, you are sure to get head pains really quick thanks to lots of flashing lights and totally awsome graphics and game play. Is this a bad thing? I would not say so. The more races you win the higher levels up you go, but its the outside level that makes it worth playing and fun in my opinion. I am not a fan of racing games to much, but highly recommend you buy this or at least rent this. The reson this game gets 4 stars over 5 is because it is a little too short.

Honest reviews on XGIII Extreme G Racing

I really wanted to love this game. I've loved the Wipeout series since the original. I love racing games, especially non-traditional ones. XG3 is deffinately a WipeOut knock-off. It has very cool graphics. It is a lot easier to drive than Wipeout so people who don't have much time to practice won't be frustrated. I like the idea of getting at least two cycles side by side and the weapons are easy to use. However, the league system they use is pretty lame. I just wasn't very motivated to want to go farther like I was in Wipeout or SSX. Also, while the controls are easy to understand, I had to re-program the pad to really play effectively. The default setup really stinks. Overall, the game just didn't captivate my attention. I suggest renting before buying on this one just to make sure it will yours.

I've played Wipeout since PS1. I haven't tried Wipeout Fusion from PS2 yet but the reviews seemed to indicate that there has been little new so I decided to try this game insteadespecially now that it has hit the bargain bins in most stores.

XG3 is very very similar to Wipeout.

Pros:

Good graphics compared to PS1 Wipeout. (no surprise here.)

Frame rates are very high so driving thru the more advanced tracks is quite exhilirating, once you've bought a new engine.

The tracks are quite nice but I don't think you get much of a chance to enjoy the art work otherwise you'll find yourself grinding against the side of the track.

You get to keep the weapons that you buy rather than use it for a short period of time.

Controls are responsive. Should probably reconfig the turbo and

gas controls right away to use the shoulder buttons.

Weapons are very very similar to wipeout. Machine gun, heat seeking missiles, rockets, shield enhancers, mines, ...

Cons:

You have to earn $ to be able to get different weapons. Wipeout lets you use them as you find them.

Not sure how choosing different bikers makes any difference. The manual does not say much and there is no obvious sense of it in the game.

It took me quite a bit of effort to win race 2. The hint comes at the back of the manual where it says you have to "feather" the turbo. What does that mean??? Some biker-techno-term? Turns out it means repeatedly pumping it and releasing it to get more out of your turbo. That was the only way I could catch up with the computer controlled drivers.

Music in Wipeout is much much better.

It's difficult to tell whether your weapons really helped. E.g. deploy the mines and expect to hear some kind of explosion like in Wipeout. Not in XG3. I think there is a sound but I'm not sure if it's an impact explosion.

--------------

Overall, it is a solid Wipeout clone. If you always wanted a PS2 upgrade for your copy of Wipeout but don't want to blow 50 bucks for Wipeout Fusion, XG3 is pretty good. ...

Xbox 360 Rock Band Fender Precision Bass Replica Review

This feels like the real Fender Bass, about 5" longer than the Rock Band 2 guitar. The split strum bar is fantastic...it took me a few minutes to get used to it and using two fingers works best for me. Real basses don't have a whammy bar and neither does this, but it does have a knob built-in if you want the whammy effect. It is not wireless but that's because Microsoft won't allow 3rd party wireless with the XBox 360. I saw someone playing this Fender Bass on YouTube and he is really, REALLY good! That's why I bought this and this thing rocks! My friends with the little rinky guitar are jealous because this looks so awesome and now they want one too.

This bass was alot of fun to play and has a great feel, but it could have been better.

First of all... The Good.

Has a more realistic look and feel than most guitar controllers. Its larger than the Rock Band guitars by about six inches and feels like a really comfortable size. The huge tuning pegs on the headstock just add to the great bass look

The fret buttons are good quality and accurate. They are better than the original Rock Band guitar but not quite as smooth as the Rock Band 2 guitar.

The split strum bar is a really great feature. It allows for two fingered bass play and feels very natural for a bass. The strum bars also have a 'positive click' when pressed and they don't feel 'squishy'. You know when you've plucked the note.

The extra fret buttons at the bottom of the neck are a nice addition, but really not necessary for the bass. They added them to allow it to be used as a lead guitar, but without a whammy bar (more on that next) it's not great as a guitar.

Now for The Bad...

The whammy bar... or in this case whammy 'knob'. To add to the look of a real bass, there is no whammy bar. But to make this more functional as a guitar they added a knob directly below the base of the neck that you spin back and forth to add whammy. It's a small knob, making it difficult to find at first without looking down. Once you find it, the knob doesn't feel good at all when you spin it. It has a cheap 'grinding' feel to it. Overall, the whammy knob just isn't fun to use.

Another knob... the five position selector. Takes the place of the toggle switch on the Rock Band guitars. Basically, the same comments from the whammy knob apply here again.

ANOTHER knob... the Start/Back button. This one just seems strange. Instead of the good ol' push buttons for Start and Back, they used a knob. Turn it left for the Back button and right for the Start button. I don't know if mine wasn't working properly, but on the song selection screen, my back button did not work. You should press Back to change the sorting option for the track list, but mine did nothing. I could not change the sort and had to scroll through all the songs to find what I wanted.

I get the reasons behind using all the knobs to give the bass a more realistic look. But in the end I would still prefer ease of use and function with larger, better quality knobs.

And finally... The Ugly!

NOT WIRELESS!!! WHY?? It took years for consoles to finally use wireless technology that actually works great and we still have good ideas like this bass that don't use it!

Price! Why am I paying the same price for a wired guitar as a good quality wireless? Normally, a wired guitar controller runs about $10 cheaper than a wireless version (the original Rock Band guitars, for example). But this bass is the same price as the awesome Rock Band 2 guitar right now. That's probably because of the split strum bar, they charge a little more.

After all this, I am not keeping mine. I can overlook the minor shortcomings with the knobs because the size is nice and the fret buttons and strum bar are good quality. But I am done dragging cords around behind me when I play.

Best Deals for Xbox 360 Rock Band Fender Precision Bass Replica

The split strum bar is fantastic and takes playing bass in Rock Band to a whole new level. It allows you to pluck notes and makes you feel like a true bass player. The fret buttons are also very responsive and comfortable to play. I found the overdrive to be very responsive to launch with a quick tilt or lean. Overall I would highly recommend this bass guitar to anyone who is a fan of Rock Band.

Honest reviews on Xbox 360 Rock Band Fender Precision Bass Replica

Takes a bit of time to get familiar with the split strum bar, but once you do, watch out! Bass is so much more fun with this controller. Strumming is accurate, overdrive works really well, and the overall design is well thought out.

My only gripe is that it is not wireless, but it looks like there may be a wireless version coming down the pike since there is a battery door molded into the back of the Bass (which is non-functional at this time)

If you are on the fence, jump off the fence and get one of these.... you 'll really enjoy it once you get used to it.

This peripheral is in all ways superior to the fender strat that comes with RockBand. It's heavier and far more sturdily built, which has always been a big problem with guitar controllers. It's also bigger, which is great if you don't have tiny arms. The two strum bars are probably my favourite part, which allows you to strum more authentically and doubles your speed. Some people might find the changes to the whammy bar and start/select buttons a little tough to get used to, since now all functions of the guitar have been turned into knobs, but it is a reasonable change.

Oh, and the tuning pegs actually turn!

i reallly like the civil war so i like this game. pros: it has some good game modes and great graphics. you control your army on a map then lead them into battle. its pretty fun. cons: 1. your armys dont all have generals! i dont understand that. you cant lead your army into battle without a general in this game. that makes perfect sense but all armys had a general back then. 2. the biggest problem! YOU TAKE TURNS IN BATTLE!! they attack then you attack they attack you attack etc. this throws alot of strategy out the window. it completely takes away from the action that should be there. overall this game is alot of fun but they could really change the whole taking turns in battle thing.

First of all, let me start by saying that this is my favorite game in the Kingdom Hearts saga. It was definitely worth the wait. Being a hard core KH fan myself, I made sure to by the game the day it came out and I wasn't disappointed. I played everyday after school, unable to put the game down for longer than I had to.

Length: I completed the game in 30 hours on Standard Mode, which is a pretty average completion time for a Square title game. And as Square does with most of their games, they made sure to leave plenty of extras after the game is over to tackle if you want more. I'm currently working on unlocking the Hidden Reports.

Graphics/Sound: I have to say I'm impressed. While the majority of the game's story is spent reading (which is to be expected from a DS game), the high graphic cutscenes are absolutely stunning, easily matching those of a PS2 game. No small achievement for a DS game. The lower quality cutscenes are a bit pixely, but aren't all DS games? As far as sound goes, this will make for another unforgettable soundtrack by Square. Also the voice acting is wonderful. My only disappointment was that it was limited to the high quality cutscenes and simple `hahas', `hmms' and other similar sounds before text.

Gameplay: A tiny step down from KH II, it was still fun and the KH style carried surprisingly well over to the DS. I'll admit I was a bit worried that, being on another hand-held system, it might end up being a bit too much like KH CoM, which, while fun, I didn't care for the Card System. But my concern quickly faded as I got past the initial tutorial in the game.

The idea of the panel system looked a bit confusing at first, but I quickly caught on. Similar to KH II, it allows you to make shortcuts during battle to different spells and items. I've heard some complaint over the fact that you only get limited slots, but personally, I think it adds a nice challenge to the game, and it's not like the slot setup you choose is permanent; you get the opportunity to rearrange your slots before every mission.

Which brings me to the Missions. This is perfectly believable for the story the game follows. While some missions are a bit repetitive, you usually have the option to skip over them and take on the missions that are different. I'd say about 60% of missions are optional. Also, I'm sure veteran KH fans will enjoy embarking on missions with their favorite Organization XIII members. The only missions I really didn't care for were recon missions, which consisted of working your way through each world and clicking on different locations to gather info on the area.

Mission Mode: This allows you to replay previous missions that you've played in the game using any character you'd like. You start off having only the members of Organization XIII to choose as your player, but you can unlock more as you get farther into the game's story.

Story: This is the reason Days is my favorite KH game. Yes, even though the game comes with a booklet that explains what happened in previous games, and the majority of the game requires no previous KH knowledge, I think new KH players might be a bit lost. But then, it is a sequel. I'm sure anyone who jumped into the middle of the Harry Potter series would be confused as well. I, however, having played all the other KH games, followed the story easily.

There are plenty of moments where I found myself laughing out loud, but there were more moments where I found myself fighting back tears. Days is, in my opinion, the most heart wrenching addition in the KH series. Also, being a fan of Organization XIII, I had endless delight at seeing my favorite characters going about their daily routines. The story takes place shortly before, during, and after the events of Chain of Memories.

So, to quickly summarize, I'm sure previous KH fans will enjoy this newest installment to the KH story, and new KH players though they may get a bit lost at times will enjoy the game as well. I highly recommend this delightful game.

Here is a game that could have been so much better than it is. Even so, it makes an entertaining, if lesser chapter into the Kingdom Hearts Series.

First the good. The game controls great. Clever use of shortcuts makes magic casting a breeze and the action for better or worse in primarily controlled by mashing on the A button, occasionally using B and Y to jump and block/roll respectively. The fighting is good for what it is, but mostly it is a bit simplistic.

Sadly the whole game is a bit simplistic. It is clear the developers wanted to focus on graphics and story. What they wound up with is a game that looks almost as good as its PS2 counterparts. The story on the other hand is a bit muddled and what starts out as a cute bromance turns into a constant irritation. My god, I don't care about them eating icecream for the 85th day in a row.

Also missing from the game is any bit of exploration. The worlds are depressingly simple and small, generally consisting of a few large rooms or spaces with few more caves/rooms opening up later in your missions. That brings me to the other big problem with the game which is the mission structure. Simply put, it is not nearly as fun as just a regular Kingdom Hearts game. 85% of the missions boil down to either kill a bunch of Heartless or kill one specific Heartless. It begins to drag with a flustering amount of sameness. Every once in a while you will come across an exploration mission which generally involves running around until a question mark pops up over Roxas's hear and you press A. There are also a few missions that you have to follow a character, which are about as dumb as they sound.

The characters from Disney and other Square series are pushed to the backburner here as well, it is mostly about Organization XIII and run parallel to the events of Chain of Memories.

The final problem with the game, as alluded to by other reviewers is the panel system, which seems to be an odd combination of a card game, the materia system from Final Fantasy VII and Diablo's loot system. You can place different panels into your inventory to do basically anything including learn moves and magic. The most irritating panel could be the level up panel. This is certainly the first game where you have to equip a level up. You get to make irritating decisions such as "Do I level up or take 'cure' into the battle" Do I want more casts of fire or to have the ability to block. It seems some things, such as new tactics and level ups should be automatic. I guess it adds in a new strategy to the game, but mostly I find it irritating.

That all being said, if you can look past the irritants, there is a lot of fun to be had here, especially for those who are already fans (for those that haven't played KH before, good luck following the story). This one is for the fans only.

If you're a big KH fan, who wants to know the back-story of Roxas' time in the Organization and who the 14th member is, then you might want to check this out. If you're a newbie KH player, you might survive understanding this without playing any of the other KH games. Several people's testaments say they haven't had much of a problem. It is recommended though, if you want to completely understand everything, you play the PS2 games first. But, it's not bad for stand-alone players either. I got my younger cousins hooked right away with it. (And for those who haven't touched this game but reviewed it anyways, like the one below me, I can only say that you intentionally want to lower the ratings...)

Pros:

+ Vibrant colorful transition from its PS2 predecessors. It's like you're staring at a PS2 game inside a DS. Not bad for pushing the system to its limits.

+ The difficulty level is just right, because the Panel system affects it greatly. You can be 10 hours into the game and still be level 6.

+ Platforming is back compared to KH2. You'll be doing a lot more pushing columns and jumping around.

+ Beautiful FMVs (even though, they're just a few)

+ Dodge roll is back!

+ Some new orchestrations by Yoko Shimomura. Don't expect majority of the game to have new ones because you're going back to the same worlds from the PS2 games.

+ New parts of the PS2 worlds created. Meaning, even though we go to the same worlds as before, a lot of them have new environments made for them. So, we're not always completely in the same familiar area i.e. Agrabah's marketplace area and outside Cave of Wonders.

+ This is a long DS game. At least 25 hours and up, depending on what you do. (Not including multi-player so just consider that extra.)

+ The new Panel system, which you can customize how many things you want. It also limits what you have in your inventory. You gain a new panel piece for every mission you beat. It gives you the strategy on how you want to do your battling. Picture the Chain of Memories cards but not in a card deck. Also, you'll be using potion a lot more at the beginning of the game so it'll go quickly. You have to constantly add to the Panel deck and alter it several times.

+ New Secret Reports are added for this game. I've yet to come across them so I can't wait to read them.

+ Roxas' diary entries are interesting to read.

+ The game's script is witty and good. Good enough that it makes me dislike Larxene 10 times more now.

o The tutorial is long but it's not as long as KH2's.

o In the Panel system, they give you level-up panels, which allow you to obviously, as the name says, level up. You have to keep collecting them to increase your level but sometimes, you won't have any place to put them.

o The story will start off very slow but it gets better as you go along. Everyone recommends the 250th day and up to 300th for the story to really pick up. For me, I don't really care. It's already good as it is. I'm less than 80 days in at this point. Unfortunately, I'm playing this game already spoiled so I know what happens. Plus, the secret behind the 14th member...

o You'll only be using the stylus to control the camera to look left, right, and up. Which, I don't have too many qualms about.

o You have customizable options on your camera control and other things.

o Yes, you might find some parts of the worlds/scenes repetitive, but the ice cream eating has a somber meaning behind it.

o There is a meaning behind the title! If you still don't understand what it means, go look it up! :P

Cons

The camera can get a bit shaky at some times when you're up against something.

The D-pad will hurt your thumb at the beginning so please, take a break in-between playing it!

When locking onto an enemy, I wish they allowed you to switch from one enemy to another like in the PS2 games.

That's all I really have to say about it for now. Be prepared for a slow moving story but a well-worth reward ending. :D

Honest reviews on Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days - Nintendo DS

This is going to be a bare bones review, because I'm only on Day 23.

The graphics are spectacular, especially for Nintendo. Nintendo has never been known for their graphics (always pixelated and basic) but the improbable is possible when you mix Squeenix and Nintendo. They've managed to combine the best of both worlds, artistry and technique. Tetsuya Nomura's brainchild has been unleashed on the DS in such magnificent fashion. You know this game is something only HE could have created. Everything from the music down to the sound you hear when you're trying to select something that you're unable to at that time mimics Kingdom hearts 1 and 2. How they managed this feat, I don't know. When you look at Chain of memories for the Gameboy Advance, it was NOTHING compared to this. It was just a failed attempt at an original game. 358/2 Is NOTHING like Chain of memories for the GBA (i hated CoM and the card system). This is a game unto itself. A game that delves into the history of the organization, and more specifically Roxas. This takes place before, during, and after Chain of memories.

if you've never played KH before, then go ahead and play the first one. After that, it's up to you which you choose to play next. I would leave KH2 for last that way you'll have a better understanding. It's like a book with many volumes. They should be read in order, no?

So far my only 2 negs. about the game would be;

1)NOT ENOUGH VOICE ACTING. HAI QUINTON FLYNN I PAID MONEY TO HEAR YOU AS AXEL, kthnx.

Seriously. I'm all for reading, especially since there's some in KH 1 and 2 (less in 2) but I want to HEAR the cutscenes not read them. That is reminiscent of Chain of memories. I suppose they had to though, to keep the file size smaller.

2) I'm not too fond of the panels. Setting it up and all, it's a learning experience and with a learning experience comes a learning curve. I'm sure ill get used to it, but so far, eh.

Well that's it. I'll edit this as i go through the game.

I've long been a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, but after being disappointed with Chain of Memories (a friend brought it over for me to try out and I knew after an hour that I wouldn't be buying that one) I wasn't holding out high hopes for this iteration of the series. Well, after finishing it, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not as good as the PS2 originals, but it's certainly a fine game and worth playing.

Graphics (score 10/10): The graphics are pretty darn good for the DS. Everything looks almost between PS1 and PS2 quality, which is quite impressive for a handheld system. I'm thoroughly pleased here and have no complaints--there's even some better rendered cutscenes interspersed with the already-good normal game graphics.

Music (score 8/10): Well, how much you like the music will be entirely dependent on how much you like KH2's music, because it's the same. The intro song is the same, and the other songs sound the same. If they're not exactly the same, then it's some sort of very slight variation. That being said, the music is still good, and I love the intro song. Still, it was kind of lazy of them not to make any new music. Lazy bums!

Characters (score 10/10): The main characters (Roxas, Axel, and Xion) are pretty well developed. The organization members don't get as much screen time, but at least you learn more about them than you did in KH2. Plus, you get to see them just sitting around on couches talking to each other about their daily schedules and how they all need a vacation. It's surreal and funny at the same time. There's even a moogle Nobody that sells you stuff in a little cloak and hood! Cuteness!!! Most of the character development focuses on the friendship of Roxas, Axel, and Xion. Squeenix has decided that ice cream must be the path to true friendship because they basically eat ice cream every single time they hang out together. Some people seem to really hate these repeated ice cream scenes but they didn't bother me. The ice cream really serves as a tangible visual symbol of their deep friendship and is a recurring plot element throughout. I thought it was pretty clever but I do agree that they ran that into the ground just a little. Anyway, this game really lays the groundwork for Axel's motivations in KH2 and I imagine replaying that game will be even more poignant now that I've played this.

Story (score 10/10): Have you ever played an RPG and thought about how interesting it would be to be able to play from the villain's perspective? And I'm not talking about the crappy trend of having a "moral" system available for the protagonist so you can do random good or evil acts. I mean actually getting into the mind of a fully developed antagonist character who has real thoughts and motivations. For example, imagine being able to play through Final Fantasy VII as Sephiroth and being able to finally get behind those pretty green eyes and fully understand why he became so unhinged. Well, the great thing about this game is that now you can finally play from the villains' perspective! You play as Roxas during his time in Organization XIII. And you will meet just about every organization member at least once. Honestly, they were not fleshed out well in KH2 and this game was desperately needed to flesh out their personalities and motivations. And honestly, you'll become oddly attached to them, even the dickish ones. I suppose once you get to know these characters it makes you more empathetic with them. Aside from that the story mainly follows Roxas and his friendship with Axel and Xion which ends rather tragically. Still, it's an excellent story and any game designer who can make a cliché like the theme of "friendship" seem appropriately dramatic and heart-breaking (and appropriate for children too!) deserves an award. Also, as a note for anyone who's wondering, do not play this first if you've never played the PS2 Kingdom Hearts games. You will not know what is going on and nothing will make sense. I mean sure, you can still play this and beat it if you know nothing about Kingdom Hearts, but I don't recommend it. It would be like watching a movie in a language you don't speak without any subtitles on. You might get the gist of what's going on but you're not going to fully understand it.

Battle System (score 9/10): When I heard that this game wasn't featuring card battles, I jumped for joy. Damn card battles. As an added bonus, this game features absolutely no use of the touchscreen. Thank goodness. Nothing's worse than when a developer decides that they need to shoehorn in touchscreen controls for a game where they don't help, and may even hinder, gameplay just because it's on the DS. And they've managed to adapt the PS2 game's control scheme fairly well here. You can glide, jump, dodge roll, lock on, smack things with your keyblade, cast spells, you name it! It's all here! However, because there were fewer buttons available for them to work with, you'll have to put your magic in the shortcut menu to effectively use it. As with all Kingdom Hearts games, the camera can go a bit wonky on you. It generally works fine enough, although it works best when you lock on to your target. A.I. controlled party members make a comeback here too. You'll either be alone or sometimes a party member (other Organization XIII members) will accompany you in battle. Each Organization XIII member has a different weapon and mode of attack. A.I. can be set to have your allies focus on the enemy Roxas is attacking or on other enemies, or they can focus on healing and support. I personally set them to attacking Roxas' target. Generally, they do pretty well (better than KH1 and KH2, although that isn't saying much), but they sometimes just stand there like idiots and do nothing. Even in attack mode they will occasionally heal you but I really wouldn't count on them for that since their support seems really spotty. Overall, I'm very impressed with how well the developers managed to take the battle system from the PS2 games in the series and adapt it for use on the DS.

Gameplay (score 7/10): This is a bit of a catch-all category for me. This is where some of my complaints about this game come in. Yup, the same two complaints everyone has about this game: the mission system and the panel system. First off, this game is mission based. This means that there is one room in the Organization Headquarters where you can buy things and talk to Saix for missions. Basically, you just select the mission you want to go on and then it takes you there. You do it, then return to that one room and choose another mission. That's the pattern. This can get really repetitive over time. However the designers really tried to spice it up with different mission types (recon missions vs. combat-oriented missions) and to reward you with cutscenes after most every mission. Not to mention, every time you start to get bored the game throws something new at you, be it a unique mission, a new world, more plot, etc. Still, I think it would have been more fun if the game was more exploration based like the other entries in the series. Maybe the DS was too limited for them to make it that way? Oh well... The other complaint has to do with the Panel system. Basically you get little squares (kinda shaped like tetris pieces) which represent various items, abilities, weapons, and magic. You get a grid of spaces and you must fit equip these things by fitting them into the grid like a jigsaw puzzle. I didn't mind equipping the weapons and abilities, but equipping the other things was not really a good idea. For instance, you have to equip a panel for every single magic spell that you use. Yes, you get x4 panels later, but it still feels like you can't cast nearly as much magic as you could in KH1 and KH2. It's really limiting. It's the same way with items. You might only have space for 6 potions. What really sucks though is that you have to equip levels. Seriously, you have to equip levels. Every last one. This will take up the majority of your space by far. I could've handled having to equip everything else, but levels should've been something automatic that you keep regardless. That's really my biggest complaint. My only piece of advice is to play on Beginner mode and don't level up excessively. Then maybe you'll be able to fit decent amounts of potions on you're panels. Oh, as final notes of interest, there's new game plus content of sorts and multiplayer. The new game plus lets you view cutscenes if there's a cleared file on your cartridge and it puts you back at your final save before the end boss so you can replay any mission you want. As such it's not a true "new game plus" since you can't replay from the beginning, but it's something at least. Multiplayer allows a friend to take control of one of the organization members during mission replays. That's pretty much it.

Overall (score 8/10): NOTE this score is not an average; it's my subjective overall score. All things considered, this is a solid entry in the Kingdom Hearts series and should not be missed by fans of the games. I only wish they had named it something different. "Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days" is one of the most awkward titles I've ever had the displeasure of trying to carry on a conversation with a fellow gamer about. You're not going to see that lend itself to a catchy acronym anytime soon. I say we change the title to "Kingdom Hearts: The Ice Cream Chronicles". C'mon, who's with me?!
