Review of Sprint Cars 2: Showdown at Eldora - PlayStation 2

Sprint Cars 2: Showdown at Eldora - PlayStation 2

Always been a huge fan of this genre of game and most reviewers do not give the dirt track the respect it deserves. Unfortunately, Sprintcar2 Showdown at Eldora deserves every bad review it gets. I will not get into too many specifics as to why this game should never have been released but here's what SAE offers.

-The same tracks as Sprintcar Road to Knoxville

-The same models and paint schemes for the Modifieds, Midgets and Sprintcars as RTK

-Three new classes Prostock, Latemodel and Wingless Sprintcar (all with paint schemes that look like they took as long to name as they did to complete.

-A Tractor pull mini game (Don't laugh, it's the best thing you will get for your $19.96!)

Sounds like Big Ant just added to an OK game and no harm right? Wrong! What was smooth, fast racing in RTK is now so jittery with a frame rate flucuating like my waistline during the holidays that it completely unplayable even with everything (including all sound turned off.) Also, don't bother starting a career, I had a driver win every race in a series and still finish 6th and under a different name.

If you are even considering purchasing this game please consider games such as Saturday Night Speedway, World of Outlaw 2002, NASCAR Dirt to Daytona and yes even Sprintcar Road to Knoxville.

This game is far from perfect, however it provides the best available video game dirt track action for race fans. Until someone makes a game with dirt late models, sprint cars, and modifieds for PS3/360, this is the game to get.

I was a big fan of the World of Outlaws PS2 game that came out in 2002 and Road to Knoxville when that came out in 2006. This version really has a lot more to do. They've added late models, pro stock and wingless sprints. The new challenge mode is fun and the tractor pull, while pretty simple, is cool because you can post your pulls to their website. I'd like to see this game on the Xbox 360 someday!!!

You can't really screw up a cable. As long as you plug it in properly, it'll work. The only problem I did have with them was when I used it during a Rock Band party. I used the extension cord for the microphone and the game did not register my singing notes. However, when I detached the extension cord and just used the regular length cord, it'd worked fine. So for regular controllers/guitars, it's fantastic. For a microphone, will give you problems.

My wife had gotten me a set of these cables so I could use my Soul Calibur Arcade Stick and wired guitar hero controllers without having to worry about my kids tripping over them.

Worked great the first time or two that I used them. Then after not using them at all for awhile I connected my fighting stick and just got a red flashing indicator light. No matter what I did I could not get the device to be recognized while using these cables!

Might have somethig to do with microsoft updates or whatever, but either way this turned out to be money wasted.

Simple and work well. I have used these with several different joysticks for fighting games in my theatre as the xbox is set up across the room. No problems, they work as designed

Honest reviews on Xbox 360 Extension Cable Twin Pak

Unless you have a Theater screen these cables just wont do. They make your cables near 15 feet long! They should have simply made 360 controllers with the USB plug BUILT IN. But no they want you to spend the extra money.

I have been playing shooters for a long long time. After DOOM, no one had the guts to move away from head shots. Almost 3 decades has come and gone and shooters have remained the same. Woow these guys did get away with it, and they have come out with amazing results. This is the power of creativity.

We have played shooters with zombies in them, horror sci-fi games, different permutations and combinations. All have few different monsters as enemies. Either you shoot them in the head or it is some kind of quick press events to kill the bosses. Here you have to understand what every enemy is, remember how to kill when you see them again. As you walk through the levels, you see clues written in blood on what to do with each enemy.

The game continuously throws new surprises. You have to explore every level to find items to upgrade your weapons. When you first step into ZeroG... the fights gets crazy. Enemies will come from every direction, the map is a big globe. The level design is fantastic. Every single detail from hospital rooms, kitchens what ever that will be required in a big space ship is there. It is not like the super tidy carpeted Trek space ship. It is supposed to be some thing like a dirty mining rig, and you surely get the feel of it.

There is lot of creativity that has gone in.. which I didn't expect from a big publisher like EA. You don't find any M16, AK46, turret gun here. All the weapons are mining equipment. Our future mining equipments are lot more interesting than what we have today. As the main character is a engineer lot of things he does very cohesive with the gameplay. When you actually fix a lever and move things around it feels lot more natural.

I do have to say one thing about this game. It is truly meant for mature audience. Please don't buy this game for very young children. There are few sections where you have to kick and stomp baby zombies. It gets too violent and scary. But as a horror/survival/thriller you need creepy enemies. Also they do give you a reason to keep searching and not quit half way around. The theme may be slightly similar to DMC4 girl friend search... but executed very well.

One gripe I have with this game as with DMC4 is backtracking. The game is quite long by today's standard. The space ship feels much better because you are visiting some of the same areas while backtracking. It is not horrible, but it is there. I wish they hadn't done that.

To give developers credit, they have done enough to avoid the regular backtracking nightmares like lost routes. You can always use your analog stick to show the dotted green walk line.

Previously I thought this one will be like Silent hill, this one is more closer to Resident Evil. Falls more in the creepy, scary game than survival horror game.

Technically, I don't have to say much. Any one who has seen videos of the game already know this game looks stunning. Fantastic way to start the holiday season. Brand new IP, silky smooth game play, really well done game. Go treat yourself.

After reading reviews that Dead Space was the second coming of the original Resident Evil, I decided I'd give it a try. Review sites were claiming it to be "the scariest game evar!" Hell, when I picked the game up from a local store I was boldly told, "within two minutes of gaining control of your character, you will jump out of your skin!" Eagerly, I rushed home, ready for my next jolt of adrenaline. So, it was with a pair of rubber underwear (I kid...or do I?) and some excitement that I set out to see what dark terrors Dead Space would contain.

Turns out there's not much here we haven't seen before. No, I didn't jump two minutes into the game...and in fact the first chapter felt pretty tame. Monsters pop out of vents or can be seen in the distance, usually followed by a loud "DUN!" from the soundtrack. Maybe I've grown so hardened from my years of playing horror games that the thrills in Dead Space don't amount to much. I'm also wondering who these reviewers are. If Dead Space is so terrifying to them, I'd hate to see what'd happen if they got their hands on F.E.A.R. or Condemned, for example, two games that have made me jump out of my skin.

Things improve as the story continues, though, with some disturbing images (usually involving a crazed survivor) and some stick with me, even now. The game does improve on its terror level, the further in you get and there are some shocking moments, both in terms of graphic depictions but also in a "holy crap, I'm being dragged by a tentacle" way. But, as a personal opinion, I've never really been fond of the silent protagonist. And here we have not only Isaac, the mute, but Isaac the faceless since he's always holed up behind some mask. Sure there is a personal story here for him, what with his girlfriend stuck on the ship somewhere, but it never really clicked for me simply because Isaac felt like a doll and not a real person.

This isn't to say Dead Space is a bad game, just the opposite! I had an absolute blast playing it because what it does, it does exceedingly well. The weapons are never your cliched space marine-type fare, which brings a fresh feel to the game. They can be "leveled up" via work benches, and you can really design both your suit and your weapons to fit your play style. Dead Space also controls amazingly well and you'll never feel like the game is hampering you by horrible movement. The graphics are pretty damn awesome, especially in terms of the grotesque monster designs (which remind me of The Thing) and the animations. The concept of "strategic dismembering" is also a fun little twist of the genre, as you'll find yourself blowing the hell out of their limbs, just to keep them from coming at you.

I also appreciate how each level feels completely different from the last and EA has truly made the Ishimura come alive. When I first heard that the game took place on a ship, I was worried. Usually that means the same old corridors and bad level design, but here it means a fully realized space ship. Breaking up the action are sections taking place in zero-G areas, which are great, and some puzzles that require you to utlize the environment.

All in all, and even though I don't share the opinion that it's the scariest game ever, Dead Space is a terrific game. The plot is very intriguing and pulls you along, but it's everything else that really adds up to making it what it is. In the end, Dead Space feels more like Aliens than Alien, and that ain't shabby.

Definitely recommend a purchase.

Best Deals for Dead Space (PlayStation 3)

Let's face it: October's a rather crowded month. Literally every single week has one top-tier title that's massively anticipated and will instantly become day one purchases for many. Call it the Summer Blockbuster Season in games, really and thankfully a game like Dead Space has generated quite a bit of excitement and won't become one of those forgotten Ico/Beyond Good and Evil-type gems that barely anyone played yet people who have sing its praises whenever they can. While it's not exactly original and there's incredibly small gripes about the gameplay, Dead Space has all the makings of a great experience and I'd recommend it to anyone...provided you're over 18.

Story: You play as Isaac Clarke (a little nod to Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, writer of 2001)who is an engineer that gets called in to investigate the distress beacon activated by the USG Ishimura, a "planet cracker" ship that literally rips holes in planets and mines the chunks for minerals and ore. But upon arrival, Isaac and a couple of his shipmates crash onto the ship and have to investigate what happened. But instead of finding its crew, it seems to be infested with new residents: that of grotesque, mutated creatures.

Graphics: This game is different than say Heavenly Sword or Uncharted which had lush and colorful visuals. Dead Space is more about poor lighting, flickering light sources and shadows across the floor. That being said, the graphics are unbelievably impressive and the immersion into the environments is stellar thanks to how the ship is presented. Also notable is the gore which is decidedly ramped up and whether it's you being on the losing end or you besting your enemies, you're guaranteed to run into some gruesomeness.

Sound/Music: Anyone who knows anything about horror is that it's just as much about how it's presented than what and all that is thanks to sound. The sound here is unbelievably impressive with clanks, roars and screeches, the unexpected loud encounter and even faint whispering, the aural design here will definately be effective if you have a killer surround sound system. The voice acting is also quite good and while they're not exactly flashy roles, there's no breaking the atmosphere with awful line delivery or melodramatic bellowing.

Gameplay: Strangely, the PS3 version of Bioshock is being released a week after this game which is a creepy, atmospheric FPS. This is a creepy, atmospheric 3rd-person shooter similar to Resident Evil 4. But what helps the game is the completely intuitive and immediate feel in the controls. While the controlling is simple and seen before, it's the weapons and others where it becomes key since I found switching weapons in previous games slightly clunky. Basically pressing L1 makes you aim and your action depends on what button you pressed. Pressing Square activates your Stasis, a kind of slow-motion weapon for those fast enemies, or just managing the battlefield. X is Reload while Circle activates your Kinesis which works similarily to the Force Grab in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (and not as awfully done either). R1 controls your firing while R2 is the weapon's secondary mode so your first weapon, Plasma Cutter cuts horizontally in default, pressing R2 changes it to vertically which is perfect for arm dismembering while the default is great for legs. You also have several other weaponry to use, all based on mining equipment so you have one gun which has saw blades, a flamethrower or a rapid-fire pulse rifle.

By the way, don't think you can rely on headshots galore in this game since that can make it worse. Instead, you have to essentially take your enemies apart to wipe them out. Blowing their legs off reduces them to a crawl while going for their arms robs them of anything to attack you with (and with Kinesis on the arms, they make for great impalement tools). That also gets a great use as well is the bigger variety in how you kill your enemies. For example, in addition to the arm-blade tactic, you can grab a flammable tank with Kinesis and launch them, creating a bomb or squishing them in doorways or getting them into gravity panels on the floor and launching them towards the ceiling with a nice, satisfying "squish" sound. While we're not talking about Bioshock-levels of variety, it's a great change of pace from just shoot-shoot-grenade-shoot in other games.

The other thing to mention is that in order to completely immerse you in the environment, EA didn't do a traditional HUD with your health bar, ammo and mini-map in the corners of the screen. Instead, everything is on your body with a vertebrae-like meter running up your spine that drops when you take damage to a half-circle for your Stasis meter, a pop-up for Air and a visible hologram for your ammo. It's a wonder that nobody seems to do this more. Word of caution: entering your inventory does not pause the game (that's what Start is for). So this effectively can leave you wide open for enemy attacks so best to wait till the coast is relatively clear. But having video logs and transmissions coming in front of Isaac and not a separate cutscene is great.

Oh, and speaking of air: on occasion you'll hit Zero-G environments where there's no air and you're able to jump to other parts of the room which lets you even stand on the walls, complete with shifted perspective. While it's disorientating and hard to tell what's exactly jumpable until you tried to jump, it quite works within the game and the near lack of sound really helps sell it. Plus let's face it: it's hard not to yell "woohoo!" like you're on a roller coaster every time you jump.

There's a couple parts in the game where I hit a proverbial wall and died a few times (it's reminiscent of "Star Wars" and even has a trophy named after one of Han Solo's lines), this isn't a difficult game so much as it's intense. Only brief times I can recall where I was more overwhelmed by enemies and didn't have a good strategy as opposed to Uncharted where enemies seem to have bullet-stopping skin or Call of Duty 4 where enemies seem to have better aim at 200 yards away than you do. While you can separate the game's experience into sizable chunks thanks to the clear chapter progression, the difficulty is so inviting that you just want to keep playing and not feel like Ninja Gaiden-levels of frustration and "finally for the 10th time!" shouts.

Is this worth a purchase? Well for me it is and I had such a blast with this game but for others, some might not get the big deal or they're too busy playing the other big games of the month to bother but I say definately do not pass this one up.

Honest reviews on Dead Space (PlayStation 3)

Look, if you love Dead Space, have dedicated your life to the game and think its the best thing since antibiotics, then I apologize for the coming blasphemy. I liked so many aspects about this game but overall it just didnt resonate with me. Here's why:

I love the horror/survival horror/action genre, so I came into it with positive expectations. This had Ridley Scott's "Aliens" movie written all over it. I was psyched.

Graphically, the game is pretty amazing, possibly one of the best looking games out there in the space-genre. The atomosphere of Dead Space is remarkable, I've give you that. They really captured the scale and isolation of space, and will positively creep you out with the strobe-lit rooms with random blood spatter. There is much detail here, but I appreciate all the effort in that.

Audio-wise, I think this may be one of the most effective uses of surround I've seen so far in a game. Its so damn eerie at times, I muted the volume. Random screams, metal grinding and breaking free, whispers (or are they?), things crawling through duct work, out of sight...this game does "ambient" better than some games do their main audio. Its almost as scary when things ARENT jumping out at you as when they are, and Dead Space uses that Hollywood scare tactic a lot. A whole lot.

I like many aspects, zero-gravity, the work stations, even the weapons were ok, but why 3 stars for fun? Because I played several sections into the game and realized not only how massive the amount of time it was going to take to solve it, but also how I was going to be repeating so many tasks so many times, and then backtracking through all the areas I previously passed through, like some kind of masochistic scavenger hunt. I can take this for a while, but not for an entire game the size of Dead Space. Even the cool new areas and details werent enough pay-off to make me want to spend the kind of hours I was going to need on this one.

Its an interesting lesson for game developers: beauty, atomosphere, storyline may not be enough to make a game "5-Star" fun if it requires a lot of repetitive work. Many, looking at the ratings, feel differently, but I was surprised enough by this to want to write a "second-opinion" review for those who havent yet played it. You may love it, buy the animated DVD and the comics and pledged your life to it, but you may not, so before you buy, you may want to try (rent).

There are a lot of reviews here, so I'll just hit a few highs, plus a low or two. This refers to the PS3 version.

I've played a lot of shooter and survival games, but Dead Space adds some great twists that make it fresh and exciting.

First, fighting tactics. As others have said, you don't go for the usual head or torso shots, you go for the limbs. This is great fun.

Second, the graphics. Absolutely gorgeous and faultlessly detailed. No render errors, no load snags, no frame rate problems. None. And no constant reuse of pipes, walls, etc. except where it's appropriate for them to look the same as another spot.

Third, environment and sound. You're kept on your toes by the creepy atmosphere and the sound is fantastic. Distant clangs, soft nearby noises and other sounds constantly keep you wondering if there's a baddie behind the next corner.

Fourth, realism. There are many zero G areas where you have to leap from surface to surface (your boots are magnetic). These are challenging but not annoying and add a nice twist. There are also areas where there is no atmosphere and you have to watch your air supply closely.

Fifth, perspective. For the first time, your health and your suit's special power meters are on the back of your suit itself, not in a corner of the screen. The over-the-shoulder perspective is nicely judged you're not so close to yourself that you can't around, but far enough back to get a good, wide view. Your body does block a part of the left half of the screen, but I've never found this a problem.

The not so good? Mainly two things that are far from a killjoy but could have been better.

One, the on-screen displays when you view your "rig" inventory, the map, and text logs you collect have absolutely puny text. They're almost impossible to read on a 34-inch conventional TV using the 3-prong high-quality video (not hi-def).

Two, you upgrade your weapons and suit powers at "benches" using "nodes" you collect along the way. Both the nodes and benches are few and far between, so you don't get to upgrade as much as you'd like.

That's it. Dead Space is simply the best game I've played on the PS3, and possibly the best ever. It's richly detailed in every possible respect, brings fresh ideas to the 3rd-person shooter experience, and has no functional flaws and no real controller-throwing frustrations.

Absolutely highly recommended!

I suspected this item was going to be a rip-off, but it was even worse than that. I ordered these for my old white Playseats Evo, and they came in a brown unmarked box. Both metal pieces are really small; about 5" in length on one and the other is about 7". There were no instructions what-so-ever, but after fumbling for about 5min, you'll figure out how it goes. BUT, the worst part is that to secure the two plates, it needs 4 1/4" washers that didn't come with these over-priced metal plates. While I live in suburbia southwest United States, I can see if someone live in a big city, it would be a hassle to find these washers.

Be sure to take at least one of the plates with you to the store when buying the washers, because I wanted galvanized ones and they wouldn't fit, you need the plain (ugly) ones because the metal needs to flex a bit to fit these plates. You'll need a wrench to secure them as hand tightening doesn't do a good job. Also, aside using velcro and some ugly zip ties, there's no easy way to secure the Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless wheel foot pedals to the Playseats EVO foot piece.

This adapter works well with the xbox 360 racing wheel. But for two piece of metal, $15 would be reasonable. $30 is a rip-off. Oh well.

Best Deals for Playseat X-Box 360 Wireless Wheel Mounting Kit

Pros:

makes the Xbox 360 driving wheel much more stable. The standard Playseat and Playseat Evolution really has no means for securing the Xbox's wheel except with velcro.

Cons:

a bit pricey for two metal plates that they could have just thrown in with the Playseat.

pictures in the instruction manual are tiny. a bigger picture would make it a lot more intuitive to attach.

Honest reviews on Playseat X-Box 360 Wireless Wheel Mounting Kit

So I read the reviews, both good and bad... I knew I would be getting two over priced pieces of metal that may or may not have the instructions or the right hardware to properly secure my xbox 360 steering wheel to my playseat. This is what I got: Two over priced pieces of metal with both instructions AND the hardware to do the job perfectly. No need to dill any holes, make any trips to the hardware store or any other modifications. The velcro I had been using did a decent job but I was still getting a good bit of fore and aft movement. These adapter plates lock the wheel down tight. No more movement!! I knew going in that it was over priced so the fact that it does exactly what it's supposed to do and was a direct bolt on fit with all hardware included is why I give this a 5 star review. On a side note, I think this adapter plate should be included with the playseat to begin with. I also recommend you get this through amazon.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Playseat X-Box 360 Wireless Wheel Mounting Kit

This is ridiculous! Look at the picture of the "mounting kit." See the two metal bits that are shown there? Well that's all you get for your $30. Allow me to elaborate:

The plates themselves fit perfectly into the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel. The metal flanges slide securely into the slots in the wheel where the Microsoft table clamp (the clamp that comes with the Wheel itself) latches onto the wheel. The bottoms of the plates have bolts sticking out that line up perfectly with the holes in the Playseat's steering wheel mount. So all you have to do is slide the two mounting kit plates onto your Xbox wheel and put the bolts through the holes.

But wait... where are the nuts to actually attach the wheel to the seat? Turns out, there ARE NONE. For $30 all you get is some carefully bent gray metal. If you actually want to USE your Xbox wheel with this kit, you need to go to a hardware store with these stupid plates and figure out what nuts you need to buy that will thread onto the bolts to allow you to secure the wheel to the seat.

To be fair, once you get the bolts and tighten it down, even the most frantic drift racing won't even budge the wheel from the plate. But honestly, if I had it to do over, I would have just used the velcro strips that come with the seat itself (they give you a ton of big, beefy velcro strips and a fistful of zip-ties) and just velcroed the s*** out of the wheel and stuck the stupid thing on there. Then I could have put my $30 in a blender or something.

UPDATE: If you decide to buy this thing, go to your local hardware store and pick up 4 nuts (I used wing nuts... easier to just finger-tighten them on) that are Metric Size M6-1.00

I was looking for something fairly inexpensive (under $50) to power my SteelSeries Siberia V2's; and work with my PS3 AND PC. I just couldn't spend $100+ on the Astro Mixamp as much as I would have liked to. So between the Fiio's, the Earforce Dss, and this; I went with the Xjacker....

Not disappointed at all.

I wanted something powerful to push my 32ohm Siberia's. The Xjackerwhoa! They say turn the amp all the way down before using the thing about took my head off. Seriously, you could damage your headset or your hearing. If you want your headset/headphones loud for cheap, you found it. Lots of headroom you don't have to turn the volume knob much at all.

Sound quality is great amplified the signal on my PS3 and PC without degrading the sound. It came with all of the right cables to hook up to the PS3 audio and chat. All I had to do to make it compatible with my pc was supply my own 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm headphone cable. Not bad at all.

...But, when hooked it to the pc usb there was background static and noise interference. This is why I am giving the review, to help anyone out that has this background noise. This is pretty common with usb sound cards or amps hooked up to a pc even the expensive ones.

I tried powering the Xjacker with a wall plug/usb similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/HTC-CNR6300-Travel-Charger-Adapter/dp/B0047EP8IY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1339233321&sr=8-8

The static was completely gone. Awesome.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have optical audio or simulated 5.1 7.1 surround sound like the much more expensive mixamps. But it's only $20 and sounds great in stereo. Obviously not audiophile equipment, but it's a good headphone amp for a gamer on a budget.

realy poor quality. The sound is really bad. worst thing that I bought in my life. worst money spend ever!!!

Honest reviews on TekNmotion XJacKer Soniq Rush 2.0 Gaming Amplifier - PS3

In terms of amplifying, it does what it has to do. really amplifies the volume.

But I'm fan of real surround experience. So instead of spending on this. collect some money and go for Tritton 720+ or Astro A40s.

If you just want loud sound whor, then buy this.

If you want sharp crisp, detailed HD sound, then definitely don't buy this. Don't buy Turtle Beach DSS surround decoder series also. It's waste of time / money.

Go for premium Headphones. Tritton or Astro. do some research on the below list and find your suitable one.

Tritton 720+ 9/10 Virtual Surround 7.1.... Im using this and surround is amazing.

Tritton Pro+ True surround 5.1.....

Astro A40 Best out there, but very costly.

It works as advertised, you can use a headset with the cables provided, and the amplifier definitely provides a boost. Unfortunately, teammates complained that I was too quiet, and they could barely hear me, when using the provided usb microphone adapter. I tried several headsets, with the same results. I have attempted to contact their customer support, and after 2 days, I still have not received a response as to how I may resolve this. I did find someone online, that said customer support helped them fix the same issue, but they didn't provide the solution :/

Hopefully I will receive a response from customer support, and I can share the answer here (and adjust my rating)

This is game is awesome! You can add it to your game night and invite your friends and family to play. This game can be played with the kids and the adults. You also get a real arm workout to! My arms were sore for a few days after playing. Watch out for the bombs it knocks 10 points off your score every time you hit one. You can also play dual player side by side and one by one and try and beat the high score of the last player. Each game is about 1 min long so you don't have to worry about waiting forever to get your turn to play. This is one game I love to play!!!!!!

We have played this game on demo, found it at an arcade place, and now bought the full download. My husband, me and 6 year old kids all love it! So much fun and worth buying and playing! Good workout and makes you act silly at the same time. Loads of fun :)

Could have purchased this game 3x compared to what I paid for this copy. I paid $30 for it here, but saw it on Xbox 360 for $10. Check Xbox prices before purchase. Great game though.

Honest reviews on Fruit Ninja Kinect Full Game Download

I bought top 20 xbox360 games for my kids 6 year and 4 year (daughters) at EID. This is the top best game so far in all these 20 games. Me and my wife although 30 year old, but still love to play this game. if you have xbox, this should be your first game.

This is the biased comment I can said about this product. If you have daughters 4 ~ 10 year old, you must also buy Fantastic Pets as well..

I had to return this product right before x-mas. I thought it was an actual game but turns out you have to download it onto your game console. I was told even if I scratched off the back of the card to get the numbers needed to download it and still couldn't get it to work I wouldn't be able to return it. So I did nothing and returned it! I was one less gift for the holidays!

These finally, finally arrived were they worth the wait?

Let's start off with what's different from the X41, XP500 and earlier models things that can be downright confusing. I'm NOT talking specs, which you can read on your own; I'm talking operability.

(For sake of reference, I've owned the EarForce Deltas (which are remodeled XP500s), the X41s and the earlier analog-version X4s.)

* The Unusual (and Not So Good) *

Unlike earlier Transmitters which were always "On" so long as they were attached to an active USB port and powered on, the X42 Transmitter and its LEDs will turn OFF when you turn off the headset OR if there is no active audio signal for around 5 minutes. (For this latter, the headset will also turn off this information is hidden at the back of the User Manual in the "Technical Specifications" section something we never read, right?)

There are two ways to turn the Transmitter back on: (1) power on the headset or (2) unplug/replug the Transmitter's USB connection. (Obviously, turn on the headset.) It takes a few seconds to power all the way back up, which is, again, an issue we never had with the previous, always-on Transmitters.

Frankly, this is a little confusing if you're expecting the X42s (and probably the XP400s) to function the same as previous wireless Turtle Beach models.

Build quality. I hate to say it, but these feel definitively cheaper than ALL of the models I've mentioned so far, especially the XP500 branch. The smaller and very portable X42 Transmitter feels flimsy and delicate. The headset feels like a light, hollow-plastic housing. And out-of-the-box, they're not as comfortable or well-fitting as previous headsets. This may change after a break-in period, so I'll update accordingly.

Paired Out-of-Box? My headset and Transmitter were not properly paired upon first use. Took a minute to figure out how to pair them, but it's something I shouldn't have had to do. The manual itself says they should be pre-paired to work together. Oops!

* What's good or even great about the X42s? *

Interference? NONE. Unlike other reviewers, I am NOT having any sound/buzzing issues. As a matter of fact, the X42s have eliminated all of the cracking issues I had with the X41s and XP500s. The sound is super-clear. We run a dual-wireless household here, with 2.4GHz/5GHz active, and the X42s have performed flawlessly. I am VERY happy and impressed by this.

Sound quality? Better. The lack of interference is no doubt at the heart of this, but I can't help but notice a marked improvement.

Transmitter Size? Excellent. Think 'the size of a square hockey puck.' While it feels incredibly delicate, it is SO SMALL compared to previous Transmitters, that you can put it pretty much anywhere. Early transmitters suffered from 'where the heck do I put this thing?'-itis. No more.

* The Questionable *

The Transmitter and USB cable are now hard-connected. I'm NOT a fan of this, as I used to move the Transmitter from one room to another. It was much easier to have two USB power cords, one in each room, and just move the Transmitter between the two. Can't do that anymore. Also, if anything happens to the USB cable, you can't buy a replacement cable. If you're crafty, perhaps you could open the Transmitter and replace the cable if something happens, but there are no obvious open-points on the Transmitter.

No Stereo Output Port? Previous models had a stereo output port, which allowed you to hook up a wired headset. Personally, this will be sorely missed, as I would hook up a wired headset for visiting friends if we were playing late at night, or if the batteries in my wireless headset were running low, I'd switch to wired. But no more.

Missing: An Additional Optical Input. With so many digitally capable audio devices, it's just unfortunate that there isn't more than one optical input. If you've got two of any of the following Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Cable/DVR, Boxee Box, Apple TV, Google TV, Roku, etc. you can only hook up one of these to the Transmitter at any given time. Some of these play well via HDMI->optical sound on some televisions and audio receivers (to date, the PS3 plays fine this way, but not the 360), but it's an unfortunate and missed-opportunity for Turtle Beach to make a more functional wireless headset.

* Conclusion *

A competent headset that suffers from change: eliminating inference and improving sound quality comes at the price of strange power issues and unexpectedly poor build-quality; a smaller form factor is offset by loss of functionality.

Whether or not the X42s are right for you will depend on whether you experienced interference with earlier 2.4GHz models. If you did, these should be a huge improvement.

If you've ever owned (touched or even seen) the XP500s, you'll be severely underwhelmed by the X42s sturdiness. For everyone else, they'll feel hollow.

If you've never owned a Turtle Beach surround sound headset, you won't be thrown-off by the changes. If you have, just be aware of the changes and differences, and set your expectations accordingly.

Personally, I haven't decided to keep them or send them back. I still have time to decide. Perhaps something more impressive is on the horizon. Your move, MadCatz?

The TB x42 is my first gaming headset and I would normally use my Tv's speakers (ie non-directional)

Packaging was secure and easy to open, the item got delivered (to Australia) in 4 days with express postage through DHL.

Product compact, light (not flimsy), well balanced, easy to set up, over detailed instructions with pictures(which is a good thing I guess).

Sound quality is great, 5.1 surround took a while to get used to, and there is obvious ~360 sound directions. Bass isn't going to rumble the set of my head, Treble isn't going to pierce ear drums either. There is button on the headset to adjust, and I have found in multiplayer that I lean toward more treble than bass.

Wireless has worked seamlessly.

Mic is great, picks up all I say and my friends have said my voice is clear with no ambient noises. Chatting feels/sounds natural, and Mic monitoring controls the volume levels

UPDATE: after two month or ~100 hours of use.

Sounds is still great and the the Direction altering button on the transmitter is useful once you get used to the directional sound.

The head band for my average sized head is very comfortable, I have worn for a couple of long gaming session and have had no discomfort, but they feels a little lose if I move around, I can still walk around the house but wouldn't play Wii bowling/tennis (bad example but I am sure Knentic has a similar game)

The range is good and connection is great, I am not sure about distance but the signal will get through two brick walls (not a third).

MAKE sure you take the batteries out when it starts beeping (low battery warning)...you will only do it once and your chat friends won't be happy. I get about 12-15 hours out of my rechargeable batteries. I am lazy and rely on the 5 minute auto shut off.

I have sat on them (not very comfortable) and they did not break with no sign of damage.

I recommend this product, but i have not owned any others!

I am not a hard core gamer. I'm just your average one who upgraded from the Turtle Beach x3's from many years ago. I expected these headphones to be better than the older ones from many models ago. I must say that overall I'm pleased. In most categories they are better than the old x3's. Although, you would expect them to be.

Better because:

*They look cooler.

*Dual Band WiFi. There was no interference with my router,

*There was no buzzing, or humming, or noise of any kind. They are very quiet!

*Microphone is removable!

*Range works well for me. I can hear throughout most of my (small) house. Almost got the 30ft they claim.

*The wire to hook up to my controller for chat now will work with my "Chatpad."

*They do a much better job at letting me hear where the noises are coming from.

*Sound quality is good enough to allow you to hear the subtle things you want to hear.

*No more infrared blackout areas if I bend down, or leave the room.

*Uses optical audio cable to deliver 5.1 Surround Sound

*No more faulty/crackling/noisy microphone to controller connecter that plagued the x3's.

No different because:

*Sound quality is no better than the old x3'a. I thought it would be much better. But it is hard to tell any difference.

*They feel about the same quality. Not too bad, but certainly a lot of plastic. Not a major problem though. They don't feel flimsy or feel like they'll break.

Worse because:

*The bass on these is for sure worse than my old x3's. The bass on those was actually impressive. These headphones do a very poor job of giving you any punch. After playing more games, I'll update.

*The bass boost or treble boost give only a very subtle change.

*The instructions are STILL wrong on how to pair them. But a simple youtube video later, you're golden.

Overall, I really like them. And when I picked them up at $120... they weren't so bad of a deal. Whenever I am in an online battle, I never really like the bass up too much, so I can hear the more important sounds. I would recommend them for sure for anyone who is looking for a good inexpensive gaming headset.

UPDATE(8/15/12): Headset has stopped working properly after just one set of batteries. I contacted Turtle Beach Support, they gave me an RMA and I received the new headset a few days ago. Since they are new... they are fine. They were good about replacing them. Let's hope that was an isolated incident, and that doesn't happen again. Since I'm not sure, and they replaced them quickly, I would still recommend them.

Honest reviews on Turtle Beach Ear Force X42 Wireless Dolby Surround Sound Gaming

This review is from the perspective of one who had the X-4 headphones and bought these X-42 headphones to replace the X-4 model. I am disappointed that the X-42 isn't really better than the X-4 from two generations earlier.

On the plus side:

the headphones do block out much more external noise than the X-4 did

no power receptacle is required runs off the X-Box 360 USB port (can be considered a plus or a minus depending on how one looks at it)

more choices for customizing the surround sound experience (six possibilities)

On the negative side:

the X-42 ear cups are less comfortable than those of the X-4

the X-42 has dropped the signal for a second or two on numerous occasions from a distance of 6-8 feet the X-4 never dropped the signal for as long as I owned them (three or four years) until I got about 25-30 feet away.

the on/off button needs to be held down for two seconds to turn the headphones on or off a pain if one needs to leave for a short break and wants to conserve the batteries. And when turning them back on, it takes a few seconds beyond that two second button push to completely power up. The X-4 was an instantaneous on/off and took maybe a second to fully power up.

it was not paired upon receipt. When attempting to pair them (I have two sets), one set paired relatively easily (not intuitively though had to break out the instructions), but the other set would not pair up. The LED on the transmitter would "rapid flash" and the headset would flash twice instead of once like it should when properly paired. Went to the TB web site and there is no information on what a "double flash" on the headset means. Maybe it is defective?

not thrilled with the bass and treble boost. With the X-4, the difference in the bass (there was no treble boost on the X-4) between the normal mode and boost mode was startling. I really liked the bass boost on the X-4 much better.

All in all, I really was expecting something way beyond the X-4 in performance and I was sadly disappointed, especially after months of anticipation waiting for it to come out. It isn't a bad headset, but two generations after the X-4, the X-42 should perform much better than it does.

Jim

Update: After using these headphones for some time now, I have found the dropout rate of the connection a bit excessive the X-4 never dropped out. Also, the "surround sound" sometimes reverses and left becomes right and vice versa. I have to turn the headset off, then back on, to reset. The headphones fit much more loosely than the X-4 also. When I bend by head down, they tend to slip off. If I shift to get up, lean back, or bend over for something, I have to hang on to them to keep them from falling off. Last item a minor one but the X-4 had a stand the headphones could be placed on. The X42 does not have one.

Overall, sound, when not disconnecting or getting static, is of better quality than the X4 and it does a good job of decreasing the distracting environmental sounds, but in all other ways, the X-4 was a much better product.

There is trerrible static in the head phones so that you cannot hear anything. I've had to return them twice for the same issue. Now trying to get in touch with Turtle to find out what the problem is.
