Halo Special Edition Xbox Game System Review

Halo Special Edition Xbox Game System

Yep, that's right, it's an awesome limited edition bundle.

This bundle came packaged with 1 see-through green XBox, 1 Controller, which has HALO as the label vs other controllers, which have the letter "X," as well as the necessary hookups. This bundle also included a copy of Halo. The box was of course different as well, since this was a limited edition run. It had Halo related material (Master Chief, etc.) splashed around here and there. This is a nice machine for what it is. I've personally been using mine for years and both the XBox and controller still work like new (I've kinda kept the controller in somewhat "unused" condition, since I didn't want to mess it up). If you're a collector, like Halo, or enjoy video games in general, this is a nice bundle, especially since it's quite different from most XBox systems.

Xbox was ahead of it's time back in 2001 when it was released, & was a nice graphical improvement over the PS2. My original Xbox was damaged by lightning so when I found this at the great price, & green, I had to snatch it up. The product arrived, in great condition, & now I can continue playing many of my Xbox games which are not back compatible with the Xbox 360. I am a console collector & the Xbox is among my favorite consoles, ever. Love it..

Honest reviews on Halo Special Edition Xbox Game System

When i was a little younger i got this for christmas back in 2001 and loved it. I had over 100hrs of halo 2 on it. I loved modding the console also. I had sold it once the 360 came out which was a huge mistake! So i decided to buy a "collectors condition" model and its great! The console has everything it came with sealed! I plan to keep this for a long time and see the value go up. GReat for any Halo fan!

When I got this particular system, it was all dirty and dusty inside out. I needed to dissemble this system to clean it. after I cleaned it, it function good for a little while. Then it started to scratch up my video game discs, so I got rid of it.

Had a lot of fun playing this game back in the day, remember getting really mad at how much I sucked at it though. So years later I still find myself wanting to get the collector's edition and try again and its so much better.

I'm new to the whole XBox scene so my current definition of difficult may change with playing experience, but I'll say this is a hard game to play. While you may be able to run through some parts without doing anything, when you play it out, it's intense. The graphics are incredible, the action intense and the story is okay. My major disappointment is the lack of coorperative play in the campaign. My daughter bought this for my birthday and when we went to play in co-op, like Halo 3, found it non-exisitent. This was a real downer.

I would like to see more XBox 360 games designed with co-op play against good AI and not just for the XBox Live arena.

Having waited for this game as long as a year and a half I can honestly say it is by itself a decent game. I put decent instead of great simply because after waiting for something for so long you (IE:myself) start to think that WOW this game is gonna be the best thing since sliced bread. Basically what I am saying is Lost Planet is a good game. I just expected and assumed it was gonna be SOOO much more. So in the end I let myself get too overhyped. The online is sweet though!! (WARNING for newbies! Link up with people you play with first because the online community is pretty tough on noobs) The main game is very scenic if snowny wastelands can be counted as scenic. LOST PLANET gets a soild 7.5 in my book. Thanks for reading!!

Honest reviews on Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Collector's Edition)

Lost Planet has great graphics, and has a good story. The story is that Earth died, so all the survivors abandoned Earth to go to this other planet which has extremely colder climates than Earth. The people have survived there for a little while, and discovered all sorts of creatures. The biggest, is Green Eye. You play the game as Wayne, a stubborn, young survivor who is working with his dad. In the beginning, you meet Green Eye, who doesn't give a very nice welcome. You run to the right, take the stairs and keep following the other people until you find a suit. Jump in the suit, and attempt to kill the giant lobster. Of course, you don't kill him, but your dad (Wayne's dad) gives up his life for you, by taking a hit from Green Eye. Horrified, you become a popsicle in your suit. Later, a group of people find you and let join their group. Oh, and don't worry! You'll meet up with Green Eye again, and this time, you have to kill him. This game is really fun, the creatures are extraordinary, but it is extremely hard. However, the last boss to the game is super easy, I beat the boss on the first try. It's probaly a really good idea to get the official gamer's guide. It'll help A LOT!!

This game is awsome to look at but as far as game play look somewhere else. you can run through the stages to the boss and not fight anything inbetween. it gets old realy REAlY fast. Again Graphicaly this game is one of the best there is on xbox 360 (It realy is). but the game itself sucks. so if you are looking for eye candy boy this is the game for you. if you are looking for a good game (like me) pass on it.

These instructions are for Windows 7 64-bit specifically

Do not even take the disc they give you with the receiver out of the bag... it's worthless.

Google "xbox 360 controller pc driver" and the first hit should be a link to the official Microsoft page for the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.

Under the Support tab you can download the official software, which does work with this HDE 360 Receiver and gives you the on screen display and shows your battery level remaining, etc, just like on the 360 console.

Once the official software has been installed...

Plug in wireless receiver to your PC

Open Device Manager

Right-click "Unknown device" > "Update Driver Software"

"Browse my computer for driver software"

"Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

Highlight "Show All Devices" > Click Next

WAIT... it may take a second to load if your PC is slow

Under Manufacturer select "Microsoft"

Under Model select "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]"

Click Next

When you get prompted for the Update Driver Warning click "Yes"

When you right-click and open Properties on the receiver in Device Manager, open the Driver tab and you should see the following:

Driver Provider: Microsoft

Driver Date 8/13/2009

Driver Version: 2.1.0.1349

THAT was the key for my installation on Windows 7 64-bit, the default driver it was finding before was dated 2006 and did NOT work even though it did recognize the receiver.

Once your receiver is working, click the sync button on both the receiver and your wireless 360 controller and you should see a pop up from your System Tray about "USB Input Device" was detected... your controller is now synced.

If you open the Game Controllers menu under Control Panel you should now see the 360 receiver listed, and you can click Properties and verify visually that all buttons, thumb-sticks, etc are working properly and you can even perform calibration of the analog inputs should they need it but I wouldn't bother unless you notice an issue.

For $12'ish shipped this is an excellent value IF it keeps working long term I will be very happy. Microsoft did not stop making the official receiver, they just decided to stop selling it individually. You have to buy the bundle with a new controller, which was foolish of them in my honest opinion and why you see all these knock-off's online.

I had previously been using my PS3 controller on my PC via a software called "DS3 Tool" by "MotionJoy" which you can look up online as well... even works with BlueTooth supposedly. A good alternative if you already have a PS3 controller because no dongle is required and the "DS3 Tool" software is completely free.

I hope this review was helpful for anyone hesitant to give this a try or having issues with the receiver driver installation.

EDIT 01/06/13 I've been using it for a few months now with zero issues, thing works like a charm. Also thanks everyone for responding that these instructions were helpful, and I took note of some suggestions and modified the above instructions to reflect that the official M$ driver / software should be installed before you do anything.

I've been using this dongle to rock the new Steam Big Picture mode and it works perfectly... :)

Does not work in Windows 8, which seems to be a common complaint. After 2 hours of searching forums and continually deleting and reinstalling drivers, I'm officially done trying.

EDIT: Got it working under Win 8, 64-Bit, but it's still somewhat of a pain. Here are the steps:

1) Install Microsoft's 360 controller software. If you Google "microsoft 360 drivers" it will be the second hit from the top.

2) With receiver plugged in, go to Device Manager > Other Devices.

3) You should see an Unknown Device. Uninstall its drivers.

4) Unplug receiver, then plug it back in.

5) You should see the same Unknown Device reappear under Other Devices.

6) Update Drivers for Other Device.

7) Select "Browse my computer for device software" then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

8) Choose Microsoft as the manufacturer, then look towards the bottom of the list for "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows" and install the software.

9) At this point (hopefully) you should be able to sync the devices together.

Note that if you disconnect the receiver you will need to redo the steps above. So yeah, I can confirm that it does work under Windows 8.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows - White Reviews

The Xbox 360 controller is just wonderful, the best console controller I've ever held in fact.

Be aware of the fact that this is the EXACT same product as the wired 360 console controller, so if that one is cheaper, buy it! The only difference is the package (this one is uglier...) and you don't get the software CD...but you can download the latest software package at MS website.

Microsoft making this controller cross compatible is actually a pretty big deal as there may finally be a level of standardization for PC controllers, if most people begin using this controller is makes it far easier on game developers to know what interface gamers are using. In fact, many games are coming with a 360 control scheme pre-installed, just as Need For Speed Most Wanted.

Seems to work with games that will support other gamepads. I have Vista 64 and Microsoft has drivers for it on their website.

THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH SOUND PLUG IT IN AND I LOST SOUND IN MY SPEAKERS (my mobo is a Gigabyte DS3)

No support anywhere on the microsoft website or internet on this, and I saw a frazzled previous reviewer... so here's the fix:

The controller has an integrated headset feature (you can buy seperately), but your pc may (like mine did) see the controller as a Controller AND a "headset." It automatically enabled the "headset" (thus disabling my speakers).

Go to Control Panel > Sound

You'll see it as a microsoft headset device enabled - disable this "headset". Then your speakers should come back on. This does not interfere with the joystick at all.

Enjoy!

This is the best possible controller for the PC that I have found thus far. I have tried many controllers that are similar to the PS2 design, but they all lacked decent button recoiling, easy to push buttons, and slimness. All other controllers I have tried are too bulky and after ~30 mins. my hand begins to get tired. I have played one game with it so far (Winning Eleven 9) and it works perfectly. No lag, comfortable feel, and the buttons are easy to use especially for a fast sports game like soccer. Obviously, if you've used the wired regular XBOX 360 controller you know this is the same thing with different packaging (and an install CD). I highly recommend it!

Honest reviews on Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows - White

I really love this controller. The spacing of the buttons and sticks feels just right for my hands. That being said, I would warn you that it is a battle in itself to get it to work with anything. Of all my games with native gamepad support, only Halo could get the controller to work right away. The recurring problem that I expierenced was that games would recognize the trigger axis and think that it is the right thumbstick. If you want the vibrate function to work, you will need either Xpadder or the XBCD driver; both are free, but frustrating to set up. I had a very difficult time getting XBCD to work on my Vista machine, but it works easily on XP. Microsoft should have thought ahead and released a profiler with their controller.

If I had known about all trouble it is to set up this controller, I still would get it because the gameplay experience is greatly expanded. Feeling the controller rumble while stomping a Sniffer in Silent Hill 4: The Room or feeling the character's heart beat faster and faster in Indigo Prophecy draws me into the game much more than with the keyboard and mouse.

This controller is great, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a gamepad. You might have to go online for help, but it's worth it. If you are going to get a 360 controller, I recommend buying the regular one, not the one for Windows. It costs a few dollars less, and they are the exact same thing, the CD notwithstanding, and you can download the exact same drivers from Microsoft.com. Also, if you choose to use the XBCD drivers, you will not even use the drivers that come on the CD.

All right let me give a short review about this controller, and I hope it will help other buddies a little bit.

First, not every game supports controller, not only this one, but also others. If the game you are playing supports controllers. You just need to go to control option to set as you wish. BUT most of the PC games do not support controllers. In this case, you will need Xpadder, please google it.

You can set the keys on your controller based on those on your keyboard, one to one, accordingly. You can also set it shaking if you want.

I already beat Call of Duty World at War using this controller, and now I am playing The Witcher. Both of these two games do not support controllers, but it is not a big deal. By using Xpadder, its not gonna be a problem to worry about.

Another thing about Xpadder:

Like RPG, you have a lot of shortcuts on your keyboard so you can drink your potions more quickly or sth. The problem is your controller does not have enough keys to hold all of this keys on your keyboard. By using Xpadder, you can set some "Function Keys" , that's what I call it.

While setting your controller, you can save two or more keys to be used as function keys. I chose LB and RB, and then just set these two keys. Click this key in Xpadder, and then click Advanced, and then click Set Selector, and then choose Select Set 2 while held, and then go to Set 2 and set other functions. So you lose two keys to use (LB and RB), but while holding LB or RB, your controller would go to another Set so actually you would have access to more functions. Take me, now when I am holding LB, XYAB would become my shortcuts to access to potions, and RB they would become the shortcuts to change my weapon. I was just grand when I found this way and couldn't wait to share it.

In some ways this was similar to Fallout 3. But there are major differences too and this game is no where near as good though I still wanted to finish it.

The main combat mechanic of the game is OK once you start using it. The combat interface uses a radial dial interface. Sometimes this style interface is great, other times not. This time it is pretty good owing mostly to the fact that when using the talent selector, time slows way down which gives you plenty of opportunity to decide on your next move. It also makes for some cool video as you can watch everyone's moves in slow-mo if you want to relax and take the action in. Indeed, this slow motion effect can make it too easy. I found that it was possible to hit the Q key (combat radial) such that I could make several moves in quick succession. At first this was to toss grenades one after the other. Later it was to activate various buffs at the beginning of battle. With the grenades there was no need to wait for the first grenade to explode before you toss the second. A fast way to take down bosses. I could easily get six off at a clip if necessary though it was not often necessary. With the buffs my combat damage went way up. For ranged attacks, you use the combat radial to slow time, then use the middle mouse button to "lock on" to a target and then scroll through targets with line of sight, then pick your action. But ranged weapons are not enough. Most enemies will close on you so you will eventually be in melee combat but you can always roll out of this to get some distance.

There are two significant disappointments for me though neither of them detracted a lot from game play. First is that the skill tree which is composed of three sets of skills, does not open up the "magic" skill tree till act 2. In the end though this was not a problem as it is not necessary to have all skills maxed to be quite powerful and some skills seemed of less value than others. On the other hand this was a good way to get you to invest in the other skills before magic as some of these other skills are quite valuable. You will have to decide how deep you want to go into different parts of the skill trees as you won't be able to do all skills and you will have to invest a minimum of skills in order to unlock the next tier of skills in a tree (there are four tiers of skills in each tree and each skill can be buffed twice more after initial activation). You can choose to cherry-pick skills and their buffs from each skill tree or simply ignore one of the skill trees and bulk up on the other two. Which brings us to the second let down. There is no real manual or guide. Thus there is little way to know what each of these skills does till you use it. But in the end I seemed to manage it well enough. There is no complicated scoring taking place and the explanations of the skills is reasonable when you look over them.

I found four bugs, but none of them caused lost play time thanks to the auto-save feature. Bugs included sound error which self corrected, falling off the game universe into empty space which required a reload and careful positioning of my character second time around, quest locators were not always evident on the map, and there was some inconsistency in the interface (the appearance of doors often told what the door did but not always and this was annoying). I found no bugged quests as are indicated by others reviewing the game so I am guessing a patch fixed these. Save and Load and Startup and Exit times are very quick. Right mouse click is also very handy for skipping scene change animations and for advancing dialog in you decide to reload a prior save in order to try out different options. I experienced no crashes to desktop and no installation issues either so the game is pretty solid overall software wise. Nice to see a vendor taking the time to QA their work themselves rather than letting the customer community do it. Kudos.

The crafting system is limited but quite easy to figure out. There are few weapons (about 10) and armor (about 8). But if you get the abilities that let you upgrade, the upgrades make significant differences. You can craft better armor and weapons than your enemies will have. If you are looking for a diablo style crafting system this is not it. But the simplicity pays off if you want a more casual game in this area rather than having to try and figure out all the rock/paper/scissors dynamics common in other games.

Travel in the game does not require the sometimes huge crossing of expanse that other games make you go through, and game areas were limited in their layout such that as in many game designs, you don't have too many ways to go. The early maps are a bit more open than the later maps for whatever reason. This is done by the typical door way offerings and ultimately one path to the current quest goal. Eventually I started using the overlay map options (tab/M key) and after that I figured out I had to move between locations to see quests come up on the map. This made travel and questing much easier.

Video I thought was good overall and yet it does not require a 400$ video card in order to get it. The game does use PHYSX if your card supports it. I highly recommend PHYSX if you got it though I also admit there are no great moments like there were in Fallout 3. Was nothing like seeing a Raider's head roll its way down a hill into a lake. But with this game's slow motion you can see things like the nails from your nail gun making their way to their target so that was pretty good.

Missing from the game is a lot of game lore. You don't read stuff to learn what happened and you don't get a lot of history on anything. I am guessing maybe some of this is on purpose in order to make a sequel worth playing (so you can find all this stuff out (why are people on Mars anyway?, who are the mutants?, etc.)).

Overall this is a somewhat dumbed-down but quite solid 30+ hours of gaming. If you want it, look for a sale.

Hail Flavius!

First off this is NOT a cyberpunk genre game. Steam punk would be a better term.

Pros:

Interesting story

Cons:

Very Linear

High learning curve

The game is an RPG vice a shooter. Also, the combat system takes a bit of getting used to. You can free shoot but there is no reticule so it takes some practice to do it. Melee combat seems to be the main combat form and again nothing revolutionary there. If you time you blocks properly you will automatically riposte. Much of what you can do it based on what you have unlocked. Many of the unlocks are confusing. For example, I had the one that gives 100% stealth when not moving in stealth mode. This should mean that as long as I'm not moving I cannot be seen even if an enemy walks right up to me. That is not true. If you're out of cover they will see you. It just seems to reduce the distance they see you at. The only reason I'm giving this three stars is because of the story. I'd recommend getting it if you can pick it up for $10 or less.

Best Deals for Mars: War Logs

When I first started playing I was worried that the game would be short lived, but it isn't at all. It has a decent skill tree for you to explore 3 different combat styles and pretty neat perk system. Advertising for you it made it seem like there was deeper character development, but it's characters are pretty interchangeable. Combat is crazy hard which I love, bu this is mostly due to the fact that it is usually 5 vs.1 (you being the one) and even if you do get a team mate they aren't going to much expect die or hurt you.

Overall I liked the challenge this game had to offer.

Honest reviews on Mars: War Logs

I tried this game on a whim because the cover caught my eye and I am so glad I did! A great story, satisfying battles, beautiful graphics, it has it all. It's not as intense as other games in its genre but for entrainment value, I was very pleased.

I bought this on impulse from steam and regret my rash action. The game starts

slowly and tapers off so I don't believe I will finish this game as it is just too tedious.

The pros:

Hmm

The Cons:

mediocre visuals

endless and needless, cut scenes

voice acting that makes you cringe

horrible interface that cannot be remapped

a clunky combat system

a ranged weapon you cannot aim, it automatically aims at the nearest enemy

There were a few good reviews on steam but I believe they were from the

developers.

Let's get one thing straight: This is easily the most realistic dolphin simulator on the Dreamcast today.

The graphics are, in a word, outstanding. When I got my first look at the undersea world (at the game's option screen, no less), my mouth was agape. Sunlight rippled on the colorful ocean rocks, jellyfish bobbed slowly in the gentle tide and bubbles lazily floated to the surface. It truly was beautiful. It's clear that the good folks at Sega did their research when it came to creating this undersea domain.

The animal models themselves are also well-done. Ecco looks and swims just like a real dolphin. Add countless sharks, fish, jellyfish, turtles and other undersea life and you have an entire ocean at your fingertips.

Enough rambling about the graphics, there's a game to play.

To begin with, I don't really care for the story. Sometime in the future, humans and dolphins work together to explore space. Some interstellar deity known as the Foe doesn't take kindly to that, and invades the Earth. Mankind, with its limitless intellegence and resources is forced to stand by while the dolphins take matters into their own hands. Er, flippers.

Naturally, you control Ecco in the 3-D undersea world. All of his moves from his 16-bit days are here. You can swim, swim really fast and sing songs. There are a few powerups, most of which let you swim even faster.

The controls are actually difficult to master. Getting Ecco to swim is easy, getting him to swim the right way (AWAY from the sharks) is harder. You'll die quite a bit.

Plus, the missions (several in each level) are rather vague. Generally, you'll enter a new area; a nearby crystal will give you a very general hint, and you're left to fend for yourself. You'll rescue other undersea life, battle currents, jellyfish and millions and millions of sharks. Have fun!

Seriously, a little more guidance would have been welcome. This is a huge game, and the levels are very large. Just figuring out where to go is the game's biggest challenge. Plus, once you get there, mind-numbing puzzles will plague you every step of the way.

Don't buy this game just because of its graphics. It's a very deep and involving game, and there's hours of fun available for people who have the time. The rest of us, however will just want to watch Ecco swim and jump in the calm waters of the opening level.

Playing the demo of Ecco the Doplhin: Defender of the Future at E3 in May is what convinced me to purchase a Dreamcast. It is the best game I have seen or played for the system, edging out Jet Grind Radio, a great game in its own right. The graphics are superb, play control is intuitive, and the environment is immersive yet beautiful. Playing this game, you feel like you are a dolphin swimming in crystal waters, avoiding sharks, and (though the demo was't complete so I don't know for sure) saving the world. Sega and developer Appaloosa both deserve praise for this game, one where the avatar is not a gun-toting bi-ped, but instead a sleek aquatic mammal. I love sports games, fighting games, RPGs, and action adventure titles, but for most new games in these genres, you get the feeling you've played it before. Not with Ecco. Bordering on revolutionary, Ecco delivers a gaming experience freshly different and totally enjoyable. Sega should also be proud of this game as it showcases how fluid and graphically stunning games on the Dreamcast can be. Ecco is a must buy for any Dreamcast owner. If you aren't one already, become one, and get this game when it comes out.

Best Deals for Ecco The Dolphin: Defender of the Future

The Ecco The Dolphin games for Sega's previous systems have always been a relaxed and relieving alternative to the droves of violent action/fighting games. Ecco The Dolphin: Defender Of The Future for Dreamcast carries over the theme and atmosphere of the past Ecco games, and injects the formula with smooth and realistic 3D evironments. This has to be one of the best looking console system games ever. Once you get over the hypnotizing graphics and sound however, you will find there are some problems with this game. The control is precise and responsive, but some levels are way too difficult, and offer little information to help the player complete the next objective. Unless you are a seasoned gamer, you will be overwhelmed to the point of boredom with the longs hours you must spend in order to finish Ecco. This is not one I would recommend for the kids...a lot of patience and skill are needed to play this game. If you are looking for a game with tons of depth that will pass the time however, you've certainly found it. Even if it makes you pull your hair out from frustration, Ecco: Defender Of The Future is a great title to have to showcase the graphical abilities of the Dreamcast, if nothing else.

Honest reviews on Ecco The Dolphin: Defender of the Future

ECCO : DOTF. Received my copy a few weeks ago. Have been playing it alot, here is what I think of this game ;D Boot up, nice classic "SEGA" image appears (no music). Followed by the Appoloosia Interactive Loga (no music). You cannot skip past these scenes. Finnally you are presented with a luscious title screen, With Ecco presented in the middle, truley awesome title screen. But there is still no music! I looked down at my VMU and saw it has said "LOADING" on it, with these bubbles. Looked back at the screen and music began to play, "PRESS START BUTTON" flashes on the screen. You can see why it took a few seconds to load, it was because the following menus are AWESOME! Hit with 3D underwater scene with menu text in the middle, nice sounds... "poP pOP PoP" and "Gulp", real water sounds. They are very nice menus.... The game is very high quality. So much time has been put into it. At the start of a new game, after you have enetered in your VM Save game name (2 Blocks VM Data), you begin. BLAH BLAH BLAH. The levels are hard to start with, controls seem to be apart of that problem, I have only just really got the hang of it. When I first tried to move Ecco, I went all over the place! Remember, he can turn upside down, all around, knocks you off sometimes, like the small caves... There is always a task to complete in the levels. The levels are really good. The VM uses 6 blocks, for ECCO settings and an additional 2 blocks for each Save file.

Graphics are very high quality. Really pumping graphics in this game. The sound is also very good. Music is relaxing and changes often to suit the scene. There are two 2D levels in the game, they are like bonus levels, They look so cool! Although they are the classic 2D side on view, they have added a 3D 128bit touch to them, and they are so much fun ;D What really makes this a classic game, is the emotional story line. I am very impressed, although I havnt completed the game (which is massive) , I find the story is one of the best things you need in a game, Ecco has it. Its very touching. I hope you have found this review helpful. Dont turn down this game, its true quality.

When Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future was first released for the Dreamcast, it's mouth watering 3-D graphics and incredibly realistic environments were unlike anything else seen on the system to date, and even today with the Dreamcast sleeping with the fishes, Ecco is still one of the top best looking games for the ill-fated system. Just as it's 16-bit incarnations provided for the Genesis years before, this 128-bit update offers the aforemented incredible graphics and very challenging gameplay. As I said before, the graphics are incredibly lifelike and Ecco and all his on-screen fellows move very fluidly and it will be hard not to take your eyes off the screen. Unfortuneately, the same steep learning curve has been inherited here as well. It is very easy to get completely lost and stuck in the game and not know where to go or what to do next. All in all, this isn't a game for novice gamers, but for those who have played Ecco games of the past and look for challenging and lengthy gameplay will have plenty to look forward to here.

When I first got this game I was a tad dissapointed. It Had NO Story. NONE! It had a smaller rooster then KoF2002(46 After every1 is unlocked in Endless mode)& many of the characters I was good with were tweaked to the point that I was thrown completely off my game(I'm looking @ you Mature & Geese).

The graphics were kinda off also, High res semi-3-D Backdrops & lower rez sprites(which look even worse when compared to KoF 2003 or even KoF evolution for Dreamcast). However the graphics can be adjusted to your liking, with the ability to soften the characters & 6 dif(very subtle)levels of sprite detail as well as 2 dif options for background detail, you can make it look presentable.

The audio is spotty @ best. While the voices come out crisp & clear, the music sounds like it was composed on an 8th graders keyboard. It's repeatitive & annoying in most stages & forgetable in the others.

Now for the good part, while @ first I was vastly irritated with the character balancing after I played for a while I got used to it. For once in an SNK game EVERY1 is prettymuch an equil(exceptions may go to Ralph & Jun Hoon)! Even the bosses, the usually overpowered, cheep, make you want to pull your hair out bosses are balanced to mid teir players! Omega Rugal is the most balanced I have ever seen him & Young Geese is the easiest SNK boss I've ever fought!Trust me when I say thats a GOOD thing. This is a tournament quality game in terms of playability. Also due to the balancing novice players who have never played a KoF game will be able to pull of combos & special attacks without trouble(The supercombos are extremely hard to do @ some points, but thay really aren't needed anyway)

Next for any1 who has ever played Capcom vs.SNK 2:EO or Street Fighter Alpha 3, they will love the variety of gameplay options simular to the groove system in place with the above games.

There are 3 systems to choose from:

Super Cancel: which allows variety in escape manuvers & wicked combos by means of special/Super canceling(Balanced mode simular to KoF 2002 Engine)

Guard Cancel: (My Personal Fav:)) Allows for Just Defence (which is simular to the parrying manuvers in StreetFighter III Series)the ability to break your opponents block,& a few escapes (Defencive mode)

MAX2: Here you have one super combo bar that fills constantly between supers, allows guard cancel & lets you unleash a Super Powerful super combo when your health gets low(Extremely agressive mode, Good for beginers).

These modes add ALOT of replay-ability to a game that lacks a story of any kind. Also new is a heat mode that drains your health in exchange for double attack power but it seems poinltss b/c it takes more health from you then you opponent.

Also there are a few game play modes to keep you occupied, Endless mode, which is a survival mode that lets you unlock portraits & characters(Kasungi, Seth, Omega-Rugal), Single battle/Vs., Team Battle/Vs., & a color Edit mode where I killed ALOT of time.

All in all if a little bit more time was put into adding some win quotes & music this would be my fav KoF yet. It has the most balanced gameplay & options seem since Fan Fav KoF 98. If your one for gameplay over graphics this is the game for you, if not then sorry you missed out.

king of fighters is a game where if you have played one you have played them all. the games are basic fighters. this game has several returning characters. only a few of them are interesting. KOF has long been accused of being a street fighter clone and to a large extent that was true. the later games like those on xbox though the games have changed quite a bit giving you three on three tournaments, class groupings, etc. i like it and recomend it to die-hard fighting fans and to those who are curious.

In my opinion this is the best in the whole saga in 2D after so many intents to change the game way, the graph of the scenarios and of the characters it is sensational and the powers and limits also. I recommend them to him...

Honest reviews on King of Fighters Neowave - Xbox

Being an old school gamer, I have a soft spot in my heart for the 2d brawlers. The current 3d fighters on the market look incredible, but I've always found them lacking. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the half-circle/quarter-circle moves.

As you would expect from any KoF game, there's a huge roster here, with many of the SNK favorites to chose from. It seems to me that some of the fighters got a bit of a boost over previous incarnations, and some may have been toned down. Terry's power geyser doesn't look as impressive as it did in other games, and it may just be me, but it seems he has a harder time with some of the cast than he would have in other games. Andy, and Joe on the other hand seem to have gotten a nice boost.

Visually the game doesn't look all that great, when compared to other 2d fighters...namely those from Capcom. The backgrounds do look good. They have a 3d look. But the actual fighters are heavily pixilated. Still despite the appearance, the game is loads of fun, and offers up quite a few different modes to play in.

Thanks to a patch from Microsoft, this game plays on the xbox 360. If you have a 360 or for some reason are still playing on the original xbox, and you're a 2d fighting fan, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

This game will supply me with my 2d fighting fix, until Street Fighter 4 is released later this year.

Basically, this is a KOF 2002 clone with a bunch of tweeks to it. What I mean by "tweeks" is that a good deal of the existing characters that were in 2002 had their stats modified a little bit as well as a few combo changes. Not to mention that the new groove system for Neowave also disturbs some of the balance in the character rooster. I won't go in depth about character tiers in this game. Go visit some fighting game boards if you want that. But basically, this is just a diffrent flavor of KOF 2002. No more and no less.

Now for a few facts and tidbits about this particular version of the game. The US XBOX version of the game is missing Angel and May Lee. They are only in the Japanese PS2 version. Furthermore, the Japanese PS2 version does support online play from what I see on the box. Not to mention that the standard PS2 controller is much better suited for fighting games then the standard XBOX controller and it's fairly obvious which version is supierior.

The only problem with the PS2 import is that you either need a flip-top, slider card, or MOD Chip to play it and that the cheapest .

However, after saying this, if you already have a modded PS2 and are looking to pick up this game, get it imported. It's not really because of the two extra hidden characters as it is about the PS2 being more fighter-game friendly. It's the standard for them. And while $35 is quite a jump compared to the price of $15, well...that's just my personal preference. And I know for a fact that I'm not the only one that has problems with XBOX ports to 2D fighters. And, at least, you are not paying $70-$80 for the PS2 import for King of Fighters XI, $65-$75 for the PS2 import of Samurai Shodown 0, and $60-$70 for the PS2 import of NeoGeo Battle Collosium.

I have been a big fan of the FIFA series dating back to FIFA 10. I buy the game every year and have played thousands of matches over the last several years. Every year the game is fundamentally the same with a few minor differences. Sometimes the changes are for the better and sometimes they're for the worse. This year is pretty typical in that regard. There are some great new features and some shockingly bad ones. Here's quick breakdown of some of the game modes and some of the changes:

Shot physics have been altered. Now the ball will dip and knuckle more than in previous FIFA games. This seems like it will improve the variety of goals you can score, yet many of the same flaws remain. The finesse shot (curling shot) is still very overpowered. Meanwhile, goalies are still way too good at making quick reflex saves on powerful shots at short range. What that all adds up to is that the finesse shot is still your go-to bread and butter shot in all 1-on-1 situations, so the variety that the developers aimed for wasn't totally achieved.

Player movement has been altered. More specifically, players have a greater sense of momentum. It is harder to start and stop instantly. Sharp cuts and 180 degree shifts in direction will be more gradual. Some reviewers have praised this as being more realistic than the last few FIFA games, where sometimes it felt like you were steering a race car instead of an athlete. I agree that this change is more realistic, but is it more FUN? I don't think so. The slower movement gives the whole experience a less responsive feeling, which can be very frustrating. Many times you will spot an opening for your player and try to weave into that space, but the slow change of direction will result in him being tackled before he can react. The overall result here is that defense feels overpowered whereas attacking play has been nerfed. One of my favorite things in the game was to pull of crisp skill moves and slaloming runs with speedy players, but now I'm finding the game a bit muddy and slow. It might be more realistic, but it is a lot less fun than FIFA 10-13.

AI has been upgraded. Computer players will have smarter movement on offense and defense. The good news here is that your computer teammates will be smarter about making runs so you pick them out with a pass. However, the CPU is still far too mechanical and tidy on higher difficulties. They will psychically sense your incoming tackle and change directions at the last moment to avoid you. The whole experience of playing against the computer can be very frustrating due to the lack of random variance and error. Even world class players make bad touches and mistakes in real life, but the CPU in FIFA plays like a machine. I much prefer to play against human players because there is more variety. It's also worth pointing out that many of the same AI flaws that have existed in the game for YEARS are still glaring. For example, defenders are absolutely horrible at making aerial challenges for the ball. So many times when a cross is whipped in, they will just stand flat-footed and let the attacker spike it right over them. In general, players lack awareness of the ball and aren't aggressive enough when it is near them. Many times the ball will squirt loose into space and your players will take steps away from it instead of trying to pounce like they would in real life. These minor AI flaws can really hinder the enjoyment of the game.

Ultimate Team is back and better than ever. If you don't know what Ultimate Team is, it's a game mode that allows you to collect and trade players in order to build your "ultimate team." However, even though the game mode bills itself as Ultimate Team, there is a chemistry system in place that effectively prevents you from linking players in your lineup unless they play in the same league or have the same nationality. This really limits your creativity and prevents you from building your actual ultimate team. For example, you can't link Ibrahimovic with Cristiano Ronaldo and get full chemistry because they don't share a common league or nationality. Putting that aside, there are a number of nice new features in Ultimate Team this year. There are more leagues in the game than last year, including the Colombian league. The interface and player search feature have greatly been improved. Single online matches have returned after shockingly being left out last season, but now they can't end in a draw like they could in FIFA 12. If you are drawing after 90 minutes, you have to play extra time and go to penalties. Annoying because single matches are supposed to be more casual and not so win-at-all-costs like the tournaments and seasons.

My two favorite new features in Ultimate Team are the new chemistry styles and the removal of formation cards from the game. In previous FUT games, you had to convert your players to the correct formation every time you wanted to experiment with a new formation. Now all players get full chemistry from all formations, so there is much more room to experiment without having to invest a lot of coins in formation cards. The new chemistry styles add a layer of customization to the game by allowing you to apply chemistry styles cards to your players that boost specific traits. For example, you could use a chemistry style to increase a defender's heading and defending. Or you could use a different chemistry style to increase an attacking midfielders passing and dribbling.

Also, it's worth pointing out that while Ultimate Team is technically free, the game is designed to push you towards the pack store, where EA makes a lot of money off people spending points on packs in hopes of finding valuable players. I strongly discourage you from spending real money on Ultimate Team, as the players you get in packs are rarely worth much and your odds of getting someone like Ronaldo or Messi are INCREDIBLY low. It is basically a lottery ticket and not a good value at all. You are always better off saving coins and buying player direct.

Career mode, skill games, and virtual clubs are back from last year. Clubs allow you to create a virtual pro for use in club games with your friends or with strangers, and to gradually build up his stats by fulfilling various achievements. For example, scoring 25 goals might improve his shooting stats. You can keep this player throughout your entire time using FIFA 14 and it is fun to gradually build him up. The only major drawback is that EA inexplicably ruined the drop-in match game mode by capping the former 11v11 player limit at 5v5 and removing the "ANY" option, which means that if you go into a drop-in match (a virtual pro match where you and strangers play a game using your virtual pro), over half of the players on the field will be controlled by the computer. It used to be that you could go full 11v11 or have one player designated as the "ANY" in smaller games to control all of the computer players. Drop-in games will be incredibly tedious and boring without the any feature, so I will not be playing them this year.

The EA Sports Football Club that they introduced with FIFA 12 has once again carried over to the new game. With this feature, you'll gradually accumulate currency within the game just by playing FIFA 14. You can then use these points to unlock nice bonuses such as free Ultimate Team coins, extra kits, new celebrations, and extra boots for your players. This is a nice feature that provides another incentive system within the game.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: FIFA 14 brings a lot of new bells and whistles compared to the last few releases in the series, but the gameplay has taken a step backward. Although it might be more realistic than ever, the game is also slower and more methodical than ever. This is especially apparent in Ultimate Team, where lightning-paced high scoring games of years past have morphed into a more sluggish and frustrating experience. There was one stretch of games last night where my opponents and I combined for one goal in six full halves of play. This is the first time in the last five years that I have felt bored with FIFA so early in the release, so I have to consider this version a step back overall despite the aforementioned improvements. Realism is nice, but not if it comes at the expense of fun. So far, this FIFA just isn't that fun to play.

I've been playing FIFA religiously since 2006. Here are some of the major gameplay changes that I noticed from FIFA '13:

Smaller Field/ Slower Gameplay The game play has been slowed down quite a bit, and you find yourself operating in close-quarters a lot. The field feels a lot smaller which is more realistic. However, it seems like it is easier to sit back and play defensively which is not much fun for me.

Catching Passes/First Touch All players can catch passes and trap the ball more easily than in '13. I liked that it was harder in '13 because it took more skill on the behalf of the player. You couldn't run full speed with a Center Back and catch a pass in stride you would have to slow down and trap the ball before continuing your run. Now it seems that everyone catches passes without losing the ball as much.

Finesse Shot In '13, I found the "right-bounce", finesse shot to be almost useless. It was easier to just slide the ball along the ground past the keeper. In '14, this shot has made a comeback. This is a return to prior years, which I like. It takes more time to line this shot up, so you should be rewarded for being able to execute it.

Player Size/Strength In '14, you can really utilize a player's strength and size. In '13, it seems that speed and dribbling were all that mattered. Now you can muscle people away from the ball and use your height to catch passes from the air (hopefully Messi can no longer wrestle air balls away from Center Backs while jumping!). I like this, however, it seems that it is much easier to score now on headers and corners. There is nothing more frustrating than when you trap your opponent outside the box and he tries a desperation cross only to score a header. Goals off of corners are also really weak, and I even feel bad when I convert on them. I'll take a win any way I can get it, but it is so much more satisfying when you actually beat your opponent and score.

Overall These are my first impressions. With any new FIFA it takes time to adjust. I am biased towards the negative because I excelled at '13 right away. '14 does not really cater to my style of play. That being said, I will still play it every day until '15 comes out.

UPDATE: After playing this game for 2 months, I have become very frustrated with it. I may even switch to Madden or NHL until FIFA '15. The conversion rate on headers and corners is much too high. Over half of the goals online are scored on these plays. In FIFA '13 I could convert on 5-10% of corners. In '14 it is seriously around 40%. With Gareth Bale delivering on corners, my player gets his head on it 90% of the time. Every game on Xbox Live is Real Madrid vs. Real Madrid. Kick the ball upfield to Ronaldo or run down the sideline and cross it in. If you don't score on the cross, you'll convert on the corner. I do not enjoy this style of play at all, but it is so effective what else can I do? I could play my old style and lose every game. Finesse shots from outside the box are also much more effective. You can win your games without ever getting a direct shot from inside the box.

Game mechanic is a step forward but...

You CANNOT play with your friends against other friends at all, in any of modes. It was never mentioned anywhere that Online Team Play will not be available and many players bought the game intending to play with friends (as they do not have time for seasons, ultimate team, career etc) like they used to in previous instances of Fifa.

Not only it was not mentioned by EA but all the reviews, who gave the game 9/10 or 10/10 score did not mention Online Team Play gone. I could not find any single review that would address this issue.

Furthermore, I have been on EA live help chat thingy 3 times trying to get advisors to tell me how to play with friends since I find not being able to do so completely ridiculous. Every advisor I spoke to seem to be surprised there is no way to play friends vs friends.

My facebook post on EA Fifa 14 wall has been removed as well.

Slightly odd isn't it.

Anyway, if you want to play Fifa 14 in group of friends you will not be able to do so. You have been warned.

Honest reviews on FIFA 14 - Xbox 360

Let me get straight to the point, Fifa 14 is by far the worst FIFA game I've played in the last 5 years! Unfortunately EA sports has not made any improvements to the game, but they have also ruined it by trying to make it more realistic(!). I'm not complaining because I can't win ,I just won my season one championship last week so I know how to play. The point is that FIFA 14 is not fun anymore...

What EA has failed to understand is that video games are meant to be fun. when you attempt to make a game realistic (in your own thoughts), you should consider the fact that it must not spoil the fun. As you can read in other reviews there are many many many issues that happen way too often in a game which makes you want to break your game. Just to mention a few:

super sluggish game-play and increased momentum of players

Easy cross and header goals that happen way too much in every game (Trust me, I also score most of my goals this way)

Dribbling with the best players in the world is almost impossible because of super late reactions and movements

Lofted through balls (which was so bad in the beginning that EA released a patch to fix it in the first few weeks)

Unrealistic first touch controls (sometimes players like Messi seem to have no idea how to stop an easy pass)

Ridiculously foolish team-mates (some things are totally out of your control...)

Forwards are in offside position 90% of the time (and don't seem to care at all!)

_ Throw-ins are just a joke!Players spend most of the time running after the ball themselves as if there's no one out there

Overall, after a game (specially at higher levels) you don't feel like you won the game because you're good. Instead you feel like you only won because you were lucky. That's what kills the fun in a sports game.

After all, it's EA and they sure know how to be the winner of "Worst Company of the Year" for 2 years in a row. If you haven't purchased the game yet, don't buy it. It's just a waste of time and money...

I have been playing Fifa games since Fifa '08 and one thing they always are is FUN. The gameplay and the graphics have changed but the heart and soul remains. You go up against your friends, spank them 4-0, then pull out the victory dance and trash talking. Ultimate Team is a great addition which allows you to take this fun online by trying to build the best team with the coins you earn and going head to head with persons all around the world. Fifa 14 has a greater learning curb than previous editions. The ball physics has changed, player movement has changed, the speed of the game has changed. A lot of people play it and feel the difference and hate it but have they taken the time to try to get used to it? Some people just can't be bothered with trying to learn a new style of play and my opinion is, they probably aren't real football (soccer) fans; maybe they watch a match here and there but are not avid fans. Fifa 14 IS different, that's for sure. There are always little glitches that can be fixed which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. Does it suck? No! Is it fun? Yes! Do you wanna pull your hair out when crappy goals go in against you? Yes! Do you chuckle and do a fist pump when crappy goals go in for you? Yes! Is Fifa 14 worth the money? YES! Go buy it.

I think the key to losing weight when it relates to exercise is to find something that keeps you interested and coming back for more. This is an answer that is different for everyone. I am not seriously overweight, but I could lose 15-20 lbs (I have been around 206 lbs for the past year+ and should be 185-190 lbs). I am not a couch potato, I just haven't found the right thing to keep me interested long enough to get myself to exercise day in and day out. When I heard about the new game by EA, I was instantly interested, being an NFL fan for nearly 20 years. I thought the idea was fantastic, and was quick to go out and buy NFL Training Camp, even at the $100 price point which is still a head scratcher to me.

Now this review is very very fresh, as I have only had the game for a very short time, and it was only released less than a week ago. However, right off the bat, I can see some of the pros and cons that jump out at me immediately:

PROS

More than anything else, I love the concept. This will garner a lot of interest from males, and while its the same types of exercises found in EA Active, this is tailored to a non-female audience.

There is a wide variety of workouts available, exercises, graphs, stats, etc. This game will keep you interested, as it's not the same old stuff day after day.

The heart monitor is really, really cool. The straps that go around your leg and arm are made well, and comfortable. I was very impressed by the quality of the hardware.

CONS

I was very upset to see that in the very first workout that I did, the triceps exercise didn't work correctly. I did things exactly as the game instructed me to, and it just wouldn't work. I had to cheat and do something else to get past these exercises. I don't know how EA would fix this bug. Can they patch this online? For the price point of this game, there better be bug fixes that can be downloaded and applied or I will NOT be happy.

The package didn't seem to come with instructions on how to tie the resistance band. This isn't a huge matter, but when the game loaded, it should have first instructed me how to correctly tie these. I also feel that the band might break at some point. Probably not, but some more information for the first time user what they can and cannot do with the band should have popped up in a video to start.

All in all, I love the idea, but I am very concerned about future problems I am going to have with the game understanding what exercises I am doing. If EA can provide patches that can be applied online, my review goes up to 5 stars. If they do not, I will be dropping this down to 2-3 stars and contacting EA support. For $100 I expect things to work flawlessly, I don't think that's too much to ask.

Look for this review to be updated in the future, hopefully I can get in the habit of using this nearly every day.

**** RECOMMENDED (but holding out my final opinion until I get a better sense from EA how seriously they will be addressing issues)

-----------------

UPDATE 11/26/2010

The initial problem that I was having with the tricep exercises was due to the heart rate monitor being upside down. Shouldn't the strap know if it isn't in the right position?

So that issues is fixed, but today pushups wouldn't register correctly.

However, I am really enjoying the 60 day challenge thus far, it gives a great sweat and is fun :)

-----------------

UPDATE 11/29/2010

Still loving this WII 'game' nearly a week later and am up to Workout #3 of the 60 Day Challenge. Already lost a pound but I'll really start believing if my scale gets under 200 lbs. which I haven't seen in years.

I'm bumping this up to ***** and making this a big recommendation. I still think it's a little pricey, but it is what it is.

BTW 1 person suggested ditching the resistance band and just getting 10-15 lb. free weights. I think this is a great idea and don't see any reason why this couldn't be done.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

UPDATE 12/07/2010

Still using this 2 weeks later and it's getting harder, even with the 60 day program on "easy". One complaint that I have is that the game doesn't alert you for routines when you need to keep the wiimote in your right hand, so sometimes you are yelling at the tv when something isn't working. The programmers should have been able to note this as well if you didn't have the remote in your hand for the exercises you need to hold it. Also, there are times when you are tired at the end and don't want to have to look at the tv to figure out when to end the stretch hold, and the commentator doesn't tell you to switch sides at the midway point. Somewhat minor issues, but worth noting. These don't change my recommendation on the product though.

-----------------

UPDATE 12/20/2010

Almost a month into the 60 day challenge and I think it's the mark of a great routine when you still exercising nearly a month later, the workouts don't feel too long, and you are still going strong. I'm not losing weight yet but I don't know if that's because I really haven't changed my diet or have gained some muscle, but my muscles are sore much of the time, sore in a good way. I have had knee trouble for years and I have to say that with all the squats they have you do (and it's a TON) it can hurt quite a bit, but I don't quit, and am still fired to keep going!! I figure I'll eventually see the pounds start to come off, and if I ever get below 200 lbs (I am only at 203 right now at 6'1" so not very overweight at all) I will probably be a believer for life!

Main main frustration is with the DB squat forward and back routines. These are very difficult to do correctly and I find myself getting very aggravated doing these drills (but I still do them).

The structure of the workouts as a whole is sooo good. Warmups get you lose, cooldowns do what they are supposed to do, some drills hurt like hell, some tire you out a ton (WR sprints come to mind), some are easier, some are just plain fun (QB stuff). All in all, it's a fantastic balance!!

-----------------

UPDATE 12/28/2010

Major server issue this weekend with EA. Not only can thousands of people not get online, the data has been corrupted due to a bug with this issue. If this is not corrected very soon, I will be dropping my review 1 or 2 stars. At this price, with a company this big, this is completely unacceptable.

I had problems with the monitors tonight where I needed to change the battery mid-workout and had no idea what was going on. Would be nice if the game could keep track of battery charge as well. Doesn't seem that difficult since the wiimotes are able to do it.

Nearing 40 days of the 60 day challenge. Lots and lots and lots of squats (muy ugg) and I am not losing any weight, but I think the weight is being replaced with muscle instead. Still going strong!!

-----------------

UPDATE 01/06/2011

Up to 40+ days of the 60 day challenge and man it's getting harder. One of the workouts I did the previous week was my first 300 calorie day and 45 minutes long. I couldn't imagine doing medium or hard for this and don't plan to when I do my 2nd 60 day challenge starting next month.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but I am a 3x open heart surgery survivor with an artificial heart valve, so I am a great candidate to show that this is a safe, healthy cardio option for many, many people out there!! I take atenolol for my heart so my heart rate is far less than everyone else in my online group which is kind of funny.

I wish that EA had built in support for dumbbells instead of assuming all users would be using the resistance band as there are workouts when I have to hold the wiimote in my right hand with the dumbbell at the same time. I don't know how they could have gotten around this without a 2nd sensor, but the dumbbell option is the way everyone should go. It's a better workout and more challenging.

Still no weight loss but there is no doubt I am gaining more muscle in my legs and arms. I've been drinking more water but haven't changed my diet much else, so the weight loss might take a little longer until I decide to get more serious about this aspect of my workouts.

UPDATE 01/11/2011

OK I finally have some real complaints about this application, and having juuust finished my workout (the first of phase 3), I am going to bullet list these issues:

My exercise routine tonight was 24 sets, and of the 24, 8 were warm-up/cool-down. That leaves 16 exercises, 8 of which were jump squats or bag hops, some 2 in a row! This is totally unrealistic. I have the setting on easy for the 60 day challenge, and I am only moderately overweight (204lbs, I should be around 180-185) with knees that give me trouble, 3 open heart surgeries and an artificial heart valve. The problem is that people who are 350 lbs are not going to be able to do jump squats and bag hops over and over and over again. There needs to be some setting to determine what kind of 60 day challenge you want --1 tailored towards DBs which is what it seems like the default is, or 1 for quarterbacks and lineman. I don't mind doing these routines, but when I have to start taking major breaks and having bad form, this defeats the purpose. This isn't medium or hard, it's E-A-S-Y and I find the heavy, heavy, HEAVY quad and squat work to be way overbalanced away from strength and just conditioning. Balance is totally off and it's starting to sour me, which is an unfortunate for a piece of software I think is really good.

There needs to be a setting for what type of coach you want to have barking in your ear. Kind of like a Bill Parcells -> Peter Carroll meter. Sometimes when I am working my tail off and the game is telling me to move it is really not encouraging. I don't mind getting pushed, but the application should be able to tell when you are having trouble and curtail the abuse a bit. Like the last point, this is starting to sour me.

There has to be a clearer explanation of what the software wants you to do with your stances for these sets. Sometimes we are supposed to mirror our virtual workout partner, sometimes we aren't. A more clear cue on the screen needs to remind you what side you should expect to start on.

Relating to that note, I am so sick of not having an option to not hold the remote on some of the sets where I use dumbbells instead. Sometimes the wiimote is barely in my fingers, as I have to clutch the dumbbell first and foremost.

I am starting to get concerned how seriously EA is taking this software. They have already slashed the price in half after I paid $100 for this in November (thanks EA), and are ignoring my forum posts and support emails about the stats corruption issue that occurred December 27-28th. Hopefully this is just growing pains, as I am still motivated to use Training Camp. I have missed 5 days in my routine due to scheduling conflicts, but I plan to really kill it these next couple of days to get back on track.

I'm glad people are enjoying my review and ongoing blog. It seems to be popular, thanks for following my progress.

UPDATE 01/12/2011

Related to what I was saying yesterday, I am sick and tired of these workouts where they have you do the same thing over and over again in unrealistic amounts relative to the challenge level you have selected. Yesterday it was bag hops and squat jumps, this time it was 3 sets of prone knee drives/mountain climbers, with 45 reps per set. My form was terrible in the 2nd set and by the 3rd I just cancelled the set as I couldn't do it. More QA with balance of the workouts especially at easy needed to be done, as this is completely unrealistic. I ended up doing 91% of the workout but had to cancel out of 2 sets to be able to survive. I also turned off coaching comments completely as I couldn't take being yelled at while I was working my tail off.

Still a few days behind but I was too sore to do a double yesterday. This 60 day challenge might end up being 65 or so by the time I am done, we shall see.

-----------------

UPDATE 01/19/2011

I came down with the flu end of last week so I haven't been able to work out in 5-6 days. 60 day challenge is going to be pushed back because of this.

One big negative is that EA Support said there was nothing they could do about the bad data on the servers so that is a huge negative in my eyes. If the #s aren't accurate, why trust them? NOT. GOOD. EA.

-----------------

UPDATE 02/16/2011

Flu lasted longer than I thought and I ran into some home repair issues (water damage) with storms up in New England so I haven't touched NFL Training Camp in weeks. I also was upset at how EA support brushed me off and ignored my concerns about bad stats and also how after spending $100 in November they slashed the price in half 2 months later. So, I will be back using the program, but I need some time to recharge and take care of other things right now.

-----------------

UPDATE 03/03/2011

Now it's $40?!? I feel robbed EA. I pay $100 end of November, and 3 months later it's at bargain basement prices? Not cool at all, and it's made me incredibly unmotivated to use this, as I feel I have been scammed.

-----------------

UPDATE 05/15/2011

Back to NFL Training Camp but trying something different. I am making pre-defined workouts highlighting only the workouts I like. I hope this will keep me coming back for more. I'm still pissed about the price drop but it is what it is. I found the workout getting too difficult and not giving me much flexibility made me not want to play as often. I realize this loses the randomness and targeting areas I might not want to, but the most important thing is for me to be WANTING to do the workouts. We will see how this new plan works out...

-----------------

UPDATE 10/29/2011

I stopped using NFL Training Camp and joined a gym back in September. I was disgusted with how quickly EA slashed the price after I paid $100 and I got sick of how flaky it was at times. It's fun to use once in a while, but the lack of support from EA really soured it all for me. Final analysis is Not Recommended to to EA's lack of commitment to the product.

Well, I am a little hard to please, but I was overall pleased with this game. I am certainly sore today and I am in good physical condition and utilize Wii for working out quite a bit (My Fitness Coach, both previous EA Sports fitness games, Gold's Gym cardio, etc.).

I didn't really want this game; I went to buy the new EA Sports Active 2 game and it only comes with one set of sensors and needed a second set to do 2 player (thanks, Nintendo, for not selling those yet...) so I figured what the heck, I'd try the NFL game and at least I'd have another set of sensors. But, honestly, it's pretty good.

I am still not thrilled with the basic exercises. Reps are a little faster than the old EA Sports games, but still drags a little. The EA Sports Active 2 game makes it fairly easy to use just weights, but this game seemed to really require I hold the remote, so I opted for the band, which I don't like. Honestly, I probably will just stay away from that part of the game and do it with the upper body section of My Fitness Coach.

What makes this game good, though, are the cardio and combination drill exercises. You can make a workout just out of drills and most are "obstacle" course style and include segments for running, squats, and making football plays (quarterback drill, you throw balls to open receivers while doing foot fire with your feet... and my rear is sore from that!). Amd. because your brain is thinking about other things, the workout seems to fly by. The lunges are super hard to figure out... had some problems with that my first go around and had to watch the video (and my hubby never could get that to work and had to skip the exercise).

You do still have to use the remote quite a bit (and you'd imagine so with a football game) but at least there is no nunchuck cord to work around. And, if you set a custom workout on drills alone, you will work out pretty hard (my average heart rate last night on a set of 11 minutes of drills was 126, which I was happy about) and a 20 minute one this morning, I averaged 118. Seeing your heart rate is super nice.. you can adjust your intensity to make yourself work harder. It's hard to get up to the higher numbers unless you're running. But, I think it's a pretty solid game and would appeal to many.

UPDATE***

I did a video review of this product if you'd like to take a peek. If you have not purchased and are just researching, it should give you a good rundown of the product and how it works. I'm still quite enjoying this after owning it for a month and highly recommend to people who like to exercise and burn calories, especially during the winter when running outside is difficult.

Best Deals for EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp - Nintendo Wii (Bundle)

NFL Training Camp can best be described as "EA Sports Active with a shot of testosterone". I've reviewed a number of Wii exercise games in my day, and I'll admit, there have been times when for my reviews I've had to dance like a cheerleader or do step aerobics to songs like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Admittedly, there are times I've thought to myself, "there has got to be a better solution for guys to work out".

The best way to describe NFL Training Camp is that EA Sports combined two of their properties. With their longstanding licensing relationship with Madden NFL, EA Sports has access to official NFL team names, players, and assets like uniforms, stadiums, and logos. And recently, EA Sports released the excellent EA Sports Active 2, an impressive follow-up to their original workout title that brings with it new wireless heart-rate monitoring, leg-strap controls, and more interactive "video game" elements. In a brilliant move, they put the two together and built a training title that really does let you feel like you're in the middle of an NFL training camp.

The game comes with the same hardware as EA Sports Active 2: a resistance band, a heart rate monitor that you strap to your arm, a motion tracker that you strap to your leg, and a USB receiver you plug into your Wii. If you buy both EA Sports Active 2 and NFL Training Camp, you'll have two sets of motion trackers and leg controllers which you can use for two-player workouts on either game. You can optionally use the Wii balance board to track your weight, but otherwise it's not used in any of the gameplay.

You start the game by creating your profile and your character, which you can associate with any NFL team. You even choose a real player to train alongside with.

There are two things I really like about NFL Training Camp. One thing is knowing that many of the drills are exactly what real NFL players do in their team workouts (In fact, EA Sports brought in actual strength and conditioning coaches from the NFL to consult on the training). The "Team Workouts" include fairly intense exercises such as foot fires, squats, heel lifts, lunges, and much more.

The second thing I really like is that many of the activities are interactive, like a real video game.

For example, there's an activity called "QB Read and React" where different targets on the field will pop up, and you need to make an overhand throwing motion to toss the ball to the target--if your team's logo is on the target. If you toss to an opposing team's target, it becomes an interception. You also have only a time limit before you will be "sacked", but you can do foot fires (running in place rapidly) to extend your "sack timer". A similar game is "QB Window", where you have to use a throwing motion to hit a target as it crosses the screen. Each time you do, you gain yards--four misses in a row without gaining 10 yards will mean you have to try again. There's an "obstacle course" game which combines both of these. You can also play as a receiver, where you need to run a pattern (basically following on-screen prompts) to catch a pass.

There are a few kicking games as well. The "punting challenge" involves you, like an NFL punter, to try to punt a ball as close to the endzone without getting a touchback. You punt the ball by making a kicking motion with your foot. There's also a "field goal" challenge where you have to time your kick with an on-screen cursor going across the uprights.

There are defensive activities too, involving virtual version of real NFL training accessories like running through ladders and tires. Then, you have to push a tackle sled by holding out your hands and running in place. The activities become real interesting when in addition to running in place, you need to throw your arm out to block tacklers and jump to avoid obstacles.

Like EA Sports Active, there are pre-designed workout regimens that you can choose from, or you can design your own custom workout with your favorite activities. There's also a 60-day challenge where you can work out four days in the week (resting 3 days). You can chart your progress in terms of calories burned and challenges met, and even put it online to compare with friends, family, or anyone else on their online portal.

All in all, NFL Training Camp is a winner, and a great gift for the guy in your life who could use a little workout but is turned off by let's say, less than "manly" titles. As with EA Sports Active 2, it's a pretty good mix of more intense exercises and "fun" interactive exercises which keep the workout interesting and keep you coming back.

Honest reviews on EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp - Nintendo Wii (Bundle)

Hi everyone.

I just got "NFL Training Camp" from Amazon the other day, and I have used it a couple of times now. I wanted to write a really quick review of my initial experience with the product.

First off, I will say that the packaging seems really nice. The equipment seems solidly made and it fits really well. It's also comfortable, which was a bit of a surprise. I was half expecting it to dig into my body or slide all around. The arm strap and the leg strap stayed in place throughout all of my workouts and never felt uncomfortable at all. In fact, after a few minutes I didn't even notice that they were on. The only ding I give the equipment is the fact that it's branded "EA Active" and comes with some decals for you to put on them to cover that up with the "NFL Training Camp" logo. Not a big deal, but come on EA...for $100 you couldn't even put the stickers on for us??

Once I got the disc in the Wii, it fires up with the profile setup. I went through all of that and then registered the product with EA and created an online account. The ONLY issue I have with the opening sequence is that it mentions how to set up the sensors, but doesn't really show you how. I thought that I was doing something wrong, and then I realized that you actually set up the sensors AFTER the preliminary video. I wish it would have told me during the video that there would be a detailed setup after the video...then I wouldn't have thought I was doing it incorrectly. Needless to say, I got it working just fine as soon as I realized there is an actual setup screen for the equipment.

I launched right into the "game" after that, and I set up my workout days and days off. I then went ahead and just set myself up with some custom drills. I have been mainly using the quarterback challenges. They are an absolute blast. They mainly require you to move your feet to "hold off" a blitz. There is a timer in the corner that shows you how close the rush is getting to you, and if you move your feet faster you make that timer go down slower. You then have to whip the Wii remote forward as if you are throwing a football when your receivers get open. I have to say, I had an absolutely awesome time doing these drills. I was moving my feet and really getting into gaining the yards with the receivers. One really cool feature is that it tracks your scores and then shows you how well you're doing on what is essentially a leader board. It's a GREAT way to get people to keep coming back for more, even when they have already gotten really good at the drill. You can always try and beat your best score...and if you keep coming back for more, then hey, you're still working out which is ultimately the point of the whole product.

I must say...I am relatively out of shape. Not really obese, but not really in shape either. In any case, the three QB drills I did really had me working. I was sweating and my heart rate was way up, which is easy to judge because of the excellent heart rate monitor with the system. The best part?? I was burning calories and getting what seemed like a good little workout, but it didn't feel like WORK. It was more like having fun that just has the side effect of burning some calories.

I did a few of the other workouts, but I was already pretty tired from my QB drills, so I don't think I did them as well as I should have. I started each workout day with the QB drill, mainly because I'm not quite yet ready to commit to the 60 day challenge, so I've just been doing my own drills at my own pace. Even though I didn't do the other drills as well as I probably should have, they all still seemed to work very well and were also fun. I will probably start the 60 day challenge in the next few days and then if I have to, I will ammend this review.

All in all, I'm really happy with the product. If you are the type of person that wants to work out but finds most workout DVDs and programs boring (like me) then you should give this a try. I have tried several workouts in the past and always gave up within about two weeks...and I KNEW I was going to give up because right from the get-go they didn't seem like any fun. This, on the other hand, has given me a completely different initial impression, and I feel that I will be able to stick with it for a good long while.

The game is a great concept for all of us who love football and want to compete and get in shape however I don't believe that EA Sports has gotten all of the details worked out. There are several times when the sensors just do not read your movements. This gets very frustrating because you can't go any farther in the game until it finally reads it. This CAN take a very long time! The other annoying issue is that you cannot stop the game in the middle of a workout and save where you are at to come back to it at another time. The directions say that it saves where you leave off, this has not happened for us. We had to start over everytime. If I had bought this at a local store I would have already returned this product. Overall somewhat dissatisfied.

I think most gamers are already aware of BioWare's pedigree, and they have stated that Dragon Age is the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate." Myself, the only thing I was worried about was EA's heavy hand in BW's back pocket, fortunately, this definitely does NOT seem to be the case.

Dragon Age: Origins is a very well thought out and then realized fantasy world. You start by making a choice... male or female and then one of five different races (there are actually only three races, but elves and dwarves come in two different varieties each), one of three different classes (warrior, mage, or rogue) that will eventually branch off into one of four different specialties. Each choice has it's "Origins" in the form of a specific story line unique to each race with each class, obviously, taking a different approach to that story. I first played the human noble origin, and am now on the elves, then I'll do the dwarves... I'll take the race that I like playing the best and that will be my main character. (Seeming as there's an achievement for each Origin, it's rewarding to take this approach as well).

The graphics are incredible and the sound is just as incredible, I'm not actually sure that there is a way to play this game and *not* get immersed, no lost, in it. I also like the controller scheme, it proved to be very intuitive once I spent a few minutes with it. There's only one action button (A) the other three are skill or talent specific with (RT) acting as a shift so you can get 2 sets of three commands (all mapable on the fly). On the other side (LT) pulls up a radial menu that lets you access most of your different commands similar to how Mass Effect used radial menu's but this one is staked, after you select from the main tree you get a second radial to pick your specific action, and just like ME the radial menu pauses the game. I will do a full review when I get done with my first playthrough.

What I wanted to comment specificaly on was the collector's edition. Is the CE worth the extra money? To me it absolutely was. It's all packaged really nice in a metal case with a map and an extra DVD with a lot of content. On the DVD besides the gratuitous "Making of..." videos, game art, and other comentaries there is also a video strategy guide --by the lead designer at BioWare-and it's really informative. Besides giving some sage advise on different character builds and play styles he also drops some hints as to where to find some of the most powerful items in the game for each class. My favorite part of the Collector's Edition, however, is the extra in-game content. For opting with the CE you get 3 special items: a book, a staff, and a helmet (all heavily enchanted, of course), and you also get the 'Blood Dragon' armor that will also be useable in Mass Effect 2 (how cool is that?) and it tops off with the 'Stone Prisoner' quest please note that this quest is available for purchase seperately as DLC on BioWare's server, but it's not cheap. All in all I am very happy with the CE and I would recommend it over the standard version any day.

**edit 11/15/2009**

I have finished every origin plot line and opted for a female human rogue for my first playthrough. I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through it, I don't have a lot of time to play right now and when I do play I'm trying to cover all ground possible before I move on. I don't want to get too specific in case of spoilers, but I will say the only thing that I can find to complain about so far is a slight lack of depth as far as tactics that are offered and too many talents available compared to how many points you get to spend on them. I will say that BioWare has a good amount of possible tactics to apply to whichever character, BUT in order to get enough slots to make it really worthwhile you have to spend your talent points on tactics.

Personally, I am currently of the mind that there are way too many skills and talents and not enough points available to even end up with 1/3 of them by the end of leveling (it appears there is a level 20 cap *3.15*>there is no cap, level 20 is considered the first mature character level* but skills and talents could still use some an update). Then they make it not just individual talents to focus on, but in trees of four this makes for some hard decisions when you level. This is a detraction for me because I'll end up micro-analyzing which skill/talent I should get instead of playing the game! Mages have it worst. They have a considerably larger spell tree than the warrior or rogue have for skill trees. Being that this is the only thing I have found thus far to have a serious gripe about I still contend that this is by far one of the better games to come along in a while.

I have finished a thorough playthrough on the X360 and am about 1/3 through a PC playthrough. I maintain most of my original enthusiasm for this title. If I could revote I would make it a 4-star rating, but this is still a very solid addition to the rpg game realm. There is some definite shortcomings with the whole "tactics" style gameplay, which is almost surprising considering how much Bioware seems to have put into it but its there. Mainly, as far as tactics go there's really only one option and that's have your warriors charge in and take'em downand leave spellcasters in the rear of the battlefield. You **as in the character you're controlling** can attempt to flank, but that's about it. Sadly there's no attempt at a stealthier style of gameplay and combat. Even so, battles can stil be enjoyable but it definitely leaves a hole in the combat system. My main complaint about DA:O is that **everything** is scripted, just try to surprise attack any enemy -can-not be done. This is because combat is only initiated through the conversation options; unless its an attack on the map screen while traveling. You can't just attack somebody because you want to and this is almost unforgivable. Hopefully with the sequel to this they will change that. Currently I am waiting to play Awakenings and Return to Ostagar, I decided to wait to play RtO until Awakenings came out and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I have enjoyed this title mostly, except for the combat hangups which I really hope they fix.

Bethesda's current stance is that they have become a publishing house and wont be making games anymore Fallout's next game has gone to another designer (Obsidian) and there is reportedly *not* going to be an Elder Scrolls 5 (I was completely floored by this). This is going to leave a huge gap in the fantasy rpg genre which Dragon Age could definitely make a grab for the gold at, but for me they really need to re-address their whole combat system to allow you to attack or not when you want to and have better control of your party and actually have some tactical options: flanking, 2nd wave, surprise attacks, etc. Without a new TES I will definitely be paying attention to what Bioware does with this title.

***CHANGED 5STAR RATING TO 4STAR RATING***

^^^^Great news about the previous comment block^^^^ Pete Hines and Todd Howard were being misquoted (check out the forums at Bethsoft if you're interested), there will definitely be a TESV by Bethesda Game Studios they are just not even going to speculate on its arrival or any multi-player games.

I definitely want to see where Bioware takes Dragon-Age though what they did with Mass Effect was simply incredible and revolutionary (I am not aware of any other sequel that lets you port your previous character into it). I am thoroughly intrigued by Morrigan (voice acting by Claudia Black definitely sends it over the top) and what it seems like she's up to, in fact the whole plot of the DA story rests on her lovely shoulders now IMO.

Return to Ostagar was OK, but definitely *not* worth the wait it was originally slated for a "just in time for the holidays" late Nov./early Dec.'09 release date. It doesn't seem like enemies scale with player progression either. I blazed through Ostagar with a level 23 rogue and darkspawn were bouncing off me, I guess after defeating the arch-demon on hardest very little else will seem challenging.

I am about 1/2 way through Awakenings with mixed-emotions, not that anything about it has been bad -I just can't seem to 'get into it' as much as I did with Origins, although there's a new *play as the darkspawn* (can't remember what they named it) mod out now so maybe I can get back into it.

Deluxe edition stuff at the very end.

If you don't want to read my retarded ode to Bioware, please skip ahead to where it says, "Actual Review!".

Ah, Bioware. You're like an old girlfriend. The one who defined love for me (1). Then you hurt me (2). I still loved you, but I didn't understand; why did you have to do that?

You went your way and I went mine. Eventually I learned to forget. I met new people; sometimes I'd fall in love, but it was never quite the same (3).

We'd see each other every couple years, and we'd have a lot of fun for a night or two (4). But other times I thought to myself, "What are you doing with your life? We could be happy together! Why are you doing this? (5). After these ultimately disappointing hookups I'd always dig up our old photos and go through them (6). I'm not ashamed to say I cried a little.

You always told me you were searching for something. Learning who you were, and how to be.

Then, one day in early November, you called me. You said, "I know now; I know who I am. I know where I belong: with you." And then you came back home to me.

Then it all became so clear; you HAD been learning. It was the old you, but a new version! Everything past was prologue to this; the version of you I always knew was there. I just needed to have faith, and you'd see it too, and we could get back what we had, what we'd always known was us.

I love you Bioware. I realize now I've always loved you. Thank you for being in my life.

ACTUAL REVIEW!

This is the best cRPG experience I've had in ten years. It becomes very clear within the first few minutes of your Origin story that you're experiencing gaming history. Not the revolutionary, innovative, awesome new mechanic kind of gaming history. This is analogous to a new album from your favorite artist that's been doing experimental side-projects for the last few years, and now comes out with a solid, deep, meaningful effort in a well-established form.

All the old ingredients are here: rich, meaningful character relationships; deep, tactically challenging combat; well written, thought-provoking dialogue trees. In short, everything you knew Bioware was capable of, but hasn't been fully present in any of their games since BGII.

Don't get me wrong; I've liked almost all of their games since then (Jade Empire and the Sonic RPG being the exceptions). It's just that none have fully satisfied me, or they've left me with the nagging feeling that something's just not quite right (re: KOTOR and Mass Effect feel slightly underdone).

This game is an instant classic, from a master of the genre. It's the kind of game that will be added to the roster of eminently replayable games (BGII, Fallout 1+2, Morrowind, Final Fantasy [pick your favorite], etc.). It's as good as or better than all of those.

Now, those of you that have NOT played Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Icewind Dale, NWN2, beware.

As evidenced by the very few negative reviews, the ad campaign for this game is not very representative of the content. This is a true western RPG, especially if you're getting it on the PC. Combat is challenging on every difficulty mode but easy.

IT IS BY NO MEANS a hack-and-slash or action RPG!!!

I still recommend it, but be prepared to open your mind to a new experience.

For those of you trying to decide on which version to get, here are some things:

If you played and loved Baldur's Gate, and got it because you bought into the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" thing, get it for the PC, no question.

On the console, the camera is locked in behind the character in the style of Knights of the Old Republic or Mass Effect. This is fine for those who fell in love with Bioware since their console years began, but not if you want to play it for full tactical enjoyment.

Also, if you have a capable PC, the graphics are far superior to the consoles, which is often the case.

360 vs. PS3?

PS3 looks better, 360 moves smoother. 6 of 1.

Don't hesitate. Buy this game.

Learn it,

Live it,

Love it:

Bioware is Back.

P.S. For those of you getting the Deluxe Edition, the added content is completely worth it. You don't have to feel cheated; they did it right. Worth every last penny.

This was a Christmas present for my dad. He and I have been huge fans of Bioware ever since Knights Of The Old Republic came out in 2003. This is one of his favorite games. He has played and beaten it at least five times, with no signs of boredom. I've also played it a bit. In my opinion, it's pretty good. I believe he is extremely happy with this purchase!

I'm not going to lie, I ONLY got the collectors edition on this because I knew it came with an add on for Mass Effect and yes, I'm a mass effect whore. I loved that game, and to be fair, I was really happy with this one too. I won't go on a giant rant about my hatred for the second, but just for this game, I was really enjoying it. I loved the characters (most of them), I loved the story. I LOVED the random conversations based on your party. The combat was fun, and in general there was always something pulling me to complete the game. I'm not a game critic, so I won't leave you an 8 million line post n the pros and cons of this game, yelling at the developers for this or that. I'm just going to say, it was a very enjoyable game and I did play it more than once, which is really saying something for a game nowadays.
