Reviews of Halo, Books 1-3 (The Flood; First Strike; The Fall of Reach)

I've gone on record in the past of having disliked the first book in this series. I take it back. After having played the original Halo through to the end more than 10 times now, I now find these books irresistable.

Halo Book One The Fall of Reach

The first book of this trilogy details the formation of the Spartan II/Mjolinar program, including the origination of the characters Master Chief, Captain Keyes and Cortana. "Fall of Reach" fleshes out the backstory. How did the Covenent happen upon humanity in the first place? What were our first encounters with the Covenent like? What does "glassing a planet" entail? And what is it that the Covenent is after?

The last question isn't answered completely, but this first volume does provide some tantalizing details that might give you a clue. You do, however, find out exactly what the Pillar of Autumn was up to prior to ending up in orbit around Halo.

Eric Nylund does a great job of injecting some humanity into the Spartans (yes, there's more than one) and some drama and strategy into fight scenes with the Covenent. If you find yourself liking this book, you may want to pick up Nylund's "Signal to Noise" or "A Signal Shattered". No matter how good Nylund's military sci-fi is, his hard sci-fi is better.

Halo Book Two The Flood

Normally, I'd say "skip this" if you've already played the game. And if you have played through the game, then the plot points in this novel won't lend you any surprises. It is, however, a testament to William Dietz's prowess as an author that even Halo veterans such as myself can pick up this book and still be interested in the subject matter. As with "Fall of Reach", "The Flood" fleshes out the Halo universe even further. Not only do you follow Master Chief as he combats the Covenent, the Flood and Guilty Spark 243 on the Jovian-orbiting ringworld of Halo, but you get up close and personal with some of the ODSTs (Helljumpers, who will play a large part in Halo 2), marines and non-coms who are aiding Master Chief in the fight. You even get to see the fight from the Covenant point of view.

William Dietz was a fine choice for creating this novelization. Already an excellent military sci-fi author, he does great work here in turning a potentially lackluster novelization into something interesting and special.

Halo Book Three First Strike

I don't really want to ruin this one for Halo fans. The most important thing about this book is this it acts as a bridge between the events of first Halo game and Halo 2. "First Strike", again by Eric Nylund, picks up right where first game ended with Master Chief and Cortana stuck in a non-FTL bomber in the dead space surrounding the remains of Halo. I won't give away anymore except to say that Halo 2 is set-up perfectly here.

The most impressive thing about the Halo books is this the amount of backstory created for the Halo universe is stunning. If you've read anything about the new Halo 2 release and have read these novels, you'll understand what I mean. Plot points and military types from the first novel are being incorporated into or mentioned in Halo 2, ie the aforementioned ODSTs. I have no idea WHERE this backstory came from either from the imaginations of Dietz and Nylund or the impressive minds working at Bungie. It doesn't matter. Reading these books and playing these games, you become intimate with a well thought-out alternate universe. And its a great one to spend time in.

November 9th can't come soon enough!

Hopefully William Dietz is on the business end of that Halo 2 novelization, and this set will include four books in the future.

As a member of the US military, it is hard to find fictional military stories that combine sci-fi and a good solid storyline. These are the kind of books that I have been searching for. Worth the time to read and the money to buy.

Honest reviews on Halo, Books 1-3 (The Flood; First Strike; The Fall of Reach)

At first, I was hesitant to pick these titles up for the simple fact that, while I am a "gamer," I'm not real big on sci-fi reading. I also feared that these books might add up to little more than fodder to lure more money out of the pockets of die-hard "Halo" fans by pandering to the already fanatical following the game has produced.

And I was wrong.

Halo's story successfully crosses the media lines in three amazing books that actually enriched my appreciation of the games.

I used to like the fact that the Master Chief was that quintessential tough guy: mysterious and unbeatable, eternally resourceful and cool-headed, cold and battle-hardened. And, if you've played the games, then you know the gimmick: you never see his face.

Well, these books unmask our beloved Spartan 117, literally and figuratively. Initially, I was a little jaded that these authors took it upon themselves to encroach upon the intergalactic man-of-mystery, but it wasn't long before I warmed up to learning his history and fighting his battles from a third-person perspective that's actually more "first-person" than even the game can offer. I learned to appreciate the depth of the human inside the helmet.

I also enjoyed learning about the other Spartans and the tight fraternal bonds they forge with each other: bred and trained for battle, loyalty and duty, though essentially ostracized, feared and misunderstood by their "normal" human counterparts; there are several points when it's said that the other marines see the Spartans as being as alien as the alien race their fighting against.

Most interesting, however, are the stories you get that the games never touch upon. There's many story-lines and characters introduced here that the games don't even mention, for obvious reasonsprimarily because the games came out first. The first book takes place before (and sets up) the first game; the second book is pretty much the first game verbatim, from beginning to end, and the third is the detailing of events between the end of the first game and beginning of the second, Halo 2. In a lot of ways, it seems as if this console-to-page transition is similar to the efforts made a couple years back with the Matrix titles. In order to get the whole Matrix story, aside from the three films, one had to play a Matrix video game, watch a direct to DVD title and read Matrix books, all of which acted as vital arcs in the circle of events throughout the saga. Halo's last book, "First Strike" introduces a lot of loose ends that are left to dangle even throughout the second game. And we thought Halo 2's cliff-hanger ending couldn't get any worse! Now, I'm positively chompin' at the bit with anticipation of Halo 3.

I'd say these titles work on a number of levels. Most importantly, I believe that the success of these games and books somehow asserts and validates gaming as a rapidly growing and infections new form of entertainment capable of holding its own next to blockbusting movies and New York Times best-selling novels; video games aren't just "for the kids" anymore. The story-telling and intrigue found in a game can be just as compelling, if not more so, than most of the rubbish Hollywood churns out anymorenot to mention that you get to participate and enjoy a sense of achievement as the stories unfold.

I don't know if anymore books are in the making; perhaps they're waiting for Halo 3, but there's still a lot of story to tell, so I certainly hope I get the chance to read on.

Having experienced HALO: Combat Evolved and studying up a bit on the backstory I decided to risk a few bucks on these novels based on what previous reviewers have said. What did I think? Well, as a very picky and details oriented fan of military fiction and sci-fi I was pleasantly surprised and very entertained by these novels. The space combat scenes in The Fall of Reach and First Strike are simply fantastic. The action is believeable and creative. The technology imployed, whether Human, Covenant or other never seems too far-fetched. The Flood is a bit of a change of pace, as I had expected from reading other reviews, but it was no less entertaining or fun and intriguing. Also, the human stories are fascinating. While only a few characters are really developed in-depth they are dynamic in ways that the games could never get across. I personally found myself captivated by Jacob Keyes, Cortana, and especially everyone's favorite cyborg: John, Spartan 117.

All in all this is a great series of novels and they add a wondrous wealth of knowledge and depth to the HALO universe. It's what I wish more military sci-fi stories could be. If you're not yet a fan of HALO, but you like military sci-fi then this is a great place to test the waters of the HALO universe. If you're already a fan and haven't read these books you're cheating yourself. These authors and the people at Bungie studios have created a tale full of adventure, mystery and a good share of hidden treasures.

Revelation (John) 1:17

And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, "Fear not; I am the first and the last; I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

This is the KIT not just a card. A previous review indicated that bestbuy.com was selling this for $49.99. That is not correct. They are selling the CARD for $49.99. This kit comes with the card plus several other components, thus making it $20 more. You may find this kit cheaper elsewhere, but not significantly. It does what it intends to do.

Worked fine but it would have been nice if the offer for $20 dollars of an xbox 360 game was current .... the offer expired 6 7 months before I even bought the product.

Best Deals for Xbox 360 Live 12 Month Gold Kit

The XBOX 360 Live 12 month kit is the best deal for anyone who needs to sign up or renew their Live account, even if you do have the headset. The card itself is $50, and the points, bonus game, and $20 dollars off a new game (limited time offer) easily helps to make your money back. Even if they didn't include the rebate, it would still be less than buying these parts separate. In fact, it's almost like you're getting a headset for free!

So, like I said, if you need live, buy.

Also, this is the bundle which someone earlier stated was cheaper at Best Buy. I checked, and he was mistaking the card for the kit.

I ordered a shiny new case for the game about 3 months ago, and it was about 12 bucks. Not bad for a mint condition disc! However, the only bad thing about it was the case's center that snaps the disc in place broke. Not to worry though, the CD is snug into a new casing, while the old "display" case is intact, but with a completely broken center snapping piece, cause I broke the rest of it. >P

Overall, I've been waiting for this game for a REALLY long time, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a taste of retro gaming, instead of the usual next-gen stuff, but that's just my opinion anyway. The full installer, which is recommended if you want most of the awesome gameplay, even music, is only about 560MB's of space, but you'd still need 600MB give or take, it's really not that much compared to the heightened memory nowadays.

Prompt shipment was a plus as well, but I forgot the seller's username. Oh well.

Anyway, this is DarkMike signing out. See ya.

Unfortunately the game I recieved was defective. I tried loading it on 1 Windows XP computer 32 bit and 2 different Windows 7 machines 64 bit. They wouldn't fully set-up. So I returned it as defective. It looks like a great game, as I have every other Bomberman game ever released for the various gaming systems. If you can get a good one try it.

Best Deals for Atomic Bomberman - PC

Bomberman's basic gameplay is massively addicting. Not only do you get to blow up walls (Or other structures representing walls), but you can also gather up various kinds of power-ups that make things even more fun (Glove lets you pick up bombs, Fire makes the bomb's explosion, the Skull does a surprise effect that'll either help you or make you suffer in play, etc).

So there's quite a bit of reasoning as to why Bomberman is striking PCs. I'm pretty sure everyone had a Windows computer in his/her household, so why not make Bomberman that accessible to everyone? Interplay saw this, and as they managed to obtain Hudson's approval, they gave us this.

Atomic Bomberman is a pretty spruced up offering in the franchise. The graphics are incredible and eye-popping, the music is catchy and techno-y (However, sadly, there's no music during play), and the atmosphere in general is just pretty awesome. With this new look, you'd think that there would be changes in the gameplay right? Fortunately, there isn't. After all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. What I think is really impressive is that the game supports online play with up to a whopping TEN people! I'm not exactly sure how to set it all up, considering I own a Windows 7 laptop, but I bet the result is more than worth it!

Also, it turns out that the game is pretty customizable. You could make your own Bomberman levels, graphics, and even change the messages! This is difficult for the younger audience to do, since it's all supposed to be done via Text documents and possibly other stuff, but it's still a pretty cool feature for those that can figure it all out.

If there's anything I am kinda concerned about, it's the voice acting. It's not BAD, but it feels weird at times. In fact, despite the game rated K-A for Kids-to-Adults (The early E for Everyone rating), Interplay snuck in some voice clips that are rather aimed at teens and beyond ("You blow!" "Eat my dust and lick my >BLEEP

This cable is used ONLY for a hookup between 2 xboxes. This means that if you want to play Halo 4 vs 4 with 2 tvs, a regular ethernet cable will not work. Only the Xbox System Link cable will work between two xboxes directly connected. However, if you hook up four xboxes, you have to use regular RJ-45 ethernet cable with a hub. That is why this cable is necessary.

If you don't like Microsoft or you think you can find a better deal on a different brand, look for "Cross-over" ethernet cables! "Patch" ethernet cables are the more common type, but they do not work for the Xbox.

This cable is absolutely necessary for anyone who bought the "xbox halo edition". Normal crossover cables do not work on this verson of the xbox and unfortunately microsoft found a way to screw you over, but hey, I guess they're being smart..

Honest reviews on Xbox & Xbox 360 System Link Cable

After spending half a day trying to link two XBox consoles to play Halo4, I checked various posts about the problem being with Halo 4 and not the cable. Sure enough, popped in two Halo Reach discs and no problem at all!

I have many more link-ready games to try, but even if it works only for Halo Reach, then it was worth the price. BTW, a router does not work. I purchased a Switcher and perhaps this will let me link up for Halo 4.

Hope this helps!

I have no idea what these other reviewers are talking about. The description on this particular cable doesn't give a length, it only shows a picture. The cable is sufficiently long enough. I received an original XBox system link cable, but it works just as well. The price at the time of this review is only 3.24, which is a wonderful price compared to others I've seen.

The product may not be as pictured, but it works just fine. Plenty long enough, and does exactly as the description says.

If you have played Transformers games for the DS, other than War For Cybertron, than you will have noticed certain traits that create a pattern, that pattern is not a very flattering one. They have a tendency to have horrible graphics, a flimsy to non-existent plot, horrific voice acting, and bad gameplay, that usually consists of time trials near impossible to complete, running in circles shooting or hitting the enemy. The games are either so easy its boring or so hard its almost impossible. Usually the impossible comes from vehicle missions. That's other Transformers games. War for Cybertron is the exact opposite. The graphics are decent for a DS game. The gameplay is fun. The voice actors are very good. The plot is great. All I can say is get this game. You can almost never "win" the game. There are many many characters to unlock, play as, level up, play different missions, and try different pairs. There are many missions to get 100% on. And dozens of data disks to unlock. It took me a month to win this game, while switching it out of my DS for it counterpart. Its great. Get it. You will not be disappointed.

I play XBox, like, a LOT. And, when I finally got my wireless headphones working and was all set to buy my first Hard Drive enclosure for my newest controller, I thought, "Hey! Why not look for a combo controller and enclosure in one!"

Imagine my surprise when I hooked this puppy up and could enclose my new USB 3.0 External Hard Drive right inside! And, talk about fast! I'm like all rapid firing and stuff, using both joysticks in tandum, and things are all missing me as I dodge and dive in my games. And the whole time I'm downloading the latest Windows 8.1 update right to my controller!!

Crazy fun. Just wish it supported more than 3 Terabytes, cause all the PlayStation controllers support 6 in their Controller Enclosures.

PRO: Wicked fast. And, storage too?

CON: Having issues recovering anything I think I've downloaded. It's like it's not there, even though I forced a USB drive into the side. Broke the plastic a bit to get it in there, but.... Oh, and I figured out that the normal USB 3.0 cord you usually get with devices doesn't fit... I mean, not anywhere. So I ended up just heating up the end of a spare I had and pushing it into the plastic at the top until it fit snugly. Looks like it worked. Just wish I could find my downloads.

Basically, I like it. It does what it is supposed to do.

Admittedly, I already had an extender in my bedroom, so if this one didn't work I wasn't pressed. It took a couple of times going back and forth between the extender and the media center, but it eventually worked. A couple of things though...1.) you cannot take the "game" or DVD out of the Xbox for the Extender to work. It is not like installing software to a computer. Also, you must have Media Center open on your PC, otherwise the Xbox will not connect. Thirdly, you will have to tell MacAfee to let the xbox connect with your computer. In the beginning, it will look at it as a hacker trying to gain access to your PC.

I do not have a wired connection, I have a wireless one. Therefore, there is some delay between your prompts and subsequent action on the television. But you really shouldn't expect any more than that anyway.

In essence, I have access to my digital music on all three floors of my home. I have an HP extender in my bedroom; the media center in my Great Room, and the xbox extender in my basement. The xbox was an inexpensive solution to the whole thing at about $89 for the wireless adapter (if you do gaming wirelessly...you already have this) and $32 for this thing. I am satisfied.

Just keep working until you get it to work.

Best Deals for Microsoft Xbox Media Center Extender

Great product, lets you get a lot out your XBox. My only beef with this is that you have to encode stuff into .wmv in order for the xbox extender to be able to read it. It doesnt read Divx and there's no way to update the codec on the XBox. Fortunately Microsft has a re-encoder that works well and is free.

Honest reviews on Microsoft Xbox Media Center Extender

I purchased the Media Center Extender for XBOX to be able to play all of the 800 Gigs of recorded TV and other content that I have stored on my Media Center PC. None of my DIVX files will play. Numerous calls to Microsoft confirm that the Extender is not compatible with alot of codecs. Be careful before you buy.

This product is supposed to allow you to use your XBOX video game system to watch programs recorded on your Windows Media Center Edition 2005 PC.

The package consists of a remote control, a DVD to install the extender software on your Windows MCE 2005 computer, an Xbox DVD (to put in your Xbox), and a remote control.

The only problem with it is that the audio on the right channel is noticeable lower in volume (and slightly distorted) than the left channel. Since my Xbox has no problem with any other software, I assume this is a software issue.

Xbox 360 will be out in December of 2005 and will have the same feature built in. Thus, save your money and wait for something that works right.

Note: I also have the Linksys Media Center Extender and it works just fine.

Discount Assassin's Creed III with Steelbook

Assassin's Creed III with Steelbook
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
Assassin's Creed III is set during the revolutionary era with much of the campaign being focused upon events surrounding the war with England. That being said, this opened up a lot of new possibilities for the Assassin's Creed franchise. Many new additions made it into the game, though the game itself feels as though it stays true to its roots. All in all, I'll break down the various elements of the game (briefly) and score them individually, ending with an overall score of the game.

Storyline: 10/10

Being as how I have been a fan of the Assassin's Creed games since the first one, I have liked all the previous storylines; and this is no exception. The story is great, many twists and turns that you may or may not be expecting, either way, there is rarely a dull moment. Furthermore, this story can be picked up by newcomers to the series (though I would recommend playing the other games before this one to get a COMPLETE sense of the story) and returning fans alike.

Gameplay: 9.5/10

The gameplay is somewhat different from the others in regards to the way you "free-run" as well as to countering attacks and disarming and the like. However, it is simple to pick up and play, but fun enough to keep you interested. Some new gameplay elements were added such as being able to captain the ocean vessel the "Aquila" and complete privateer missions as side-quests. Overall, amazing gameplay with one notable downside. That downside being horseback riding. The horseback riding mechanics in this game are horrendous. I find it odd that in this game, sometimes a horse will get stuck on a miniscule object such as a very small rock, but then can jump over quite a large one. Furthermore, the horse does not handle as well as I'd have liked. I constantly find myself stuck between two trees or rocks because the horse doesn't want to turn properly. On another note, the horse sometimes get stuck in areas where it appears to have plenty of room to maneuver. I am not sure as to why that is, but it is nonetheless, irritating.

Replayability: 8/10

This game is great from start to finish, though there is no real reason to play it all over again. The only reason I even gave it an 8/10 is because of the vast amount of time you can spend completing the various side-quests and main quests. Sometimes there does need to be a great sense of replayability in a game if there is enough content to keep you playing for a large amount of time in a single playthrough.

Multiplayer: 9/10

The multiplayer in this game is innovative (in comparison to other multiplayer titles currently available). It is not meant to be on the same level as other popular titles such as Gears of War, Battlefield, or Call of Duty. That being said, the multiplayer is nowhere near as immersive as the aforementioned games, though as I said, I don't think it was intended to be because the primary focus in Assassin's Creed has typically been the single player elements of the game. There are various online gametypes ranging from team versus, free for all, or even teaming up with a few other players to take out designated NPCs. Overall, the multiplayer likely will not keep you excited for long, though it is a nice change of pace.

Graphics: 10/10

The graphics of the game are simply stunning. The character models are great as are the environments in which you play. Occasionally you will run in to minor graphical issues or "glitches" if you will, though they typically fix themselves promptly.

Overall: 10/10

I feel that this is a fair rating primarily due to the great story line and vast amount of options you have before and after the campaign is complete (depending on how you play). "Everything looks good, feels good, plays good, and is good." "Except for the horses, they aren't so great!"

It is an absolutely stunning setting that you are immediately dropped into. They really captured the look & feel of what it must of been like in the Colonies at the time. From the comments the citizenry make towards you, the attitudes of the soldiers instantly capture your imagination. The scenery is meticulously detailed. Ubisoft really went all out by looking at maps of the locations from the time period and built the world around them and brought them to life.

The enemy AI is very good, but not excellent...There will be times you wonder why they didn't see you, while others you will wonder how they saw you...overall however, it is very good and above standard compared to other games that are currently out. The combat system is very fluid & not sluggish and the controls in general are very easy to learn & use.

I was very skeptical about the steelbook case for Assassin's Creed III. Alex Ross, the artist, did a magnificent job capturing the setting of the game the patriotic nature just exudes from it instantly, while maintaining the mystery of the assassin. It is very sturdy & a lot better quality than I had thought it would have been. It does have a shortcoming, and that is that it only holds one disc and the game itself comes with 2 discs. It would have been fantastic had Ubisoft (the games developer) had taken this into consideration and released it was a case that could carry double discs. Aesthetically however, it is absolutely beautiful.

My initial thought was to give it 5 stars, but really the fact that the game comes with 2 discs, but the steelbook can only hold one holds back a star. Definitely worth having if you are a collector.

EDIT: A comment below asked whether or not it came with the game. There were 2 steelbook cases that were put out. One of them was by an independent company and the other was released with the game as a preorder bonus. The one that was put out by the independent company did not come with the game, and the one that was put out by the developer (UBISOFT) came with the game, but it was separate with the game coming in it's own original release case. I just wanted to take the time to point this out to anyone that comes across the review and it may help them.

So, I just installed KotOR 1&2 from the collection that released this week.

First off this collection comes on two discs (one for each game), and the total install size is 4gb and 5gb, respectively. This game does require a disc-check of some type, or in other words you must have the disc in tray before it will let you run it. That being said, you can play either game with either disc in the tray. This is sad news for netbook owners and folks that don't have cd drives in their laptops.

Now for the part that everyone is waiting for:

This game does run on W7 64 bit. I didn't have any crashes or errors, though it did take a bit to install KotOR2 (about 15 mins versus 5 for KotOR1). Graphical options are exactly the same for both games, so there's no need to list them separately.

Resolutions (I just took the "higher" resolutions and put them here):

1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x1200. That's it, no higher than 16x12, such a wasted opportunity on this refresh.

Now for the options:

Shadows (on/off), Grass (on/off), Low/Med/High presets, AA (Off/2/4/6/8), Anisotropy (Off/2/4/8/16), Frame buffer (On/off), Soft Shadows (on/off completely greyed out for me), and Vertical Sync (on/off).

All in all, this is barely worth the price of admission for people who already own this game. The only additional selling point is integration with W7.

That being said, I'm not upset about spending another 20 on these classics, however I am disappointed by the mindless cash grab, by Lucasarts on this collection, without updating them further, for more modern machines...I didn't previously own KotOR2 on PC, and it's $20 to buy that game alone at retail, so both for 20 is ok.

However, if you've never played these games and have an older computer/laptop/netbook (with a disc drive), then I believe that you owe it to yourself to pick this up and give it a play through. Both games are great, with awesome stories, production values, and are great fun on top of that.

Both of these games are superb titles. The first one is the superior of the two, seeing as how KOTOR II was never really finished before release and LucasArts has had a long standing policy not to care, despite re-releasing it twice. This is a relatively minor issue, however, since the fans themselves went out of their way to polish the game and release the Sith Lords Restoration Project, which makes some major improvements to the content itself. Almost ten years after the release of the original Knights of the Old Republic, I'm sure there are more than enough reviews on the story and gameplay itself to satisfy anyone looking to explore it for the first time. This review is primarily about this software bundle.

First off, the installer has some issues. It doesn't prevent game installation but it is sluggish and non-responsive, which will leave you thinking, "Is it doing anything?" It is, it just takes some time to process whatever you're telling it to do. Don't hit install multiple times or it'll try to run multiple times and it's just a headache. Overall, this isn't that big a deal. For a third release, however, I do have some complaints. I know upping the resolution on certain things can be tricky and that it needs to be done right but it can be done. This game's resolution still maxes out at 1024x768. In an age where 1080p is all the rage, they could have at least given us something. 720p hi def would have been nice. It seems like a waste. Really, I think that the only thing that they bothered to fix in this bundle is the fact that neither game worked well on Windows 7 64bit. I'm happy to say that this seems to be a thing of the past. I've made it through the prologue of the first game and it hasn't crashed as the Vista version was prone to doing, so I'd say we've taken a step in the right direction.

My biggest complaint is that the game still uses disc verification checks to make sure that you haven't stolen the title. While I am against pirating software, I really hate this method of security. I own an Alienware m11x netbook, which does not have a disc drive. I have an external drive that I can plug in for installing software but it isn't portable and sure as heck isn't good when I want to be ignoring lectures in class or am on an airplane. Short story, I can't run these titles on my laptop. In today's day of digital downloads and netbooks, LucasArt could have found some way of getting with the times and finding a better alternative.

Overall, if you're just trying to get into the games for the first time or want to revisit the old experiences from ten years ago on a newer platform, this is a great buy. There are no improvements to be found, which is disappointing, but acceptable.

For anyone hopping they would fix some of the bugs that broke the games don't bother wasting money on this pack. A lot of spoken lines are skipped, stilled, and they didn't even bother to up the game to 1080p. In fact a lot of the movies still run in a 600x400 format so the picture can get quite small at points. It's a real shame as the games story is still some of the best out there, so be ready to get a ton of fix up mods, or keep waiting until they release a patch or new version one day that will hopefully bring the games to the way they should to be played.

Honest reviews on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic I and II PC Bundle Pack

These are great games, but don't spend your money on this hoping to have a version of these games that will work on Windows 7, they don't actually work at all. The game doesn't go past the initial Lucasarts screen, instead going to a black screen before minimizing itself after which you have to do a hard shut down through the Task Manager. Though I didn't buy this through Amazon (got it at Wal-Mart, planning on returning it), I wanted to warn others away from purchasing this. You're better off finding an old X-Box (they won't run on a 360 without a lot of slow down, stuttering, and framerate issues) and getting these games on that system.

Edit Okay, I got it up and running on my system. I had to alt-tab out before it would lock up and go into the Processes through the Task Manager and set the CPU affinities so it would just run off of a single CPU. Works great now, so I am editing my review. It still locks up after the Lucasarts screen, but only every once in a while now. I've managed to get through a good portion of the first game with no troubles. It would have been nice to have it working right out of the gate, and maybe it will/does for most people.

Anyway, I will say that the graphics overall are a bit dated, but I can deal with that since they are actually better on the PC than they were on the original X-Box. The environments seem more alive on the PC version. Also I've found that the controls on the PC version are better than the X-Box version, which were a little clunky to be quite honest. Overall I am just happy to be able to play a slightly better version of the games I remember playing years ago. Also it's helping me to remember story details that I had forgotten about which is increasing my enjoyment of the SWToR MMO a little more now.

This is one of the best Star Wars games to date. A solid story set thousands of years before the original Trilogy. Bioware put together a great game with fun characters and even gave SW fans a new favorite character.

Something to keep in mind, this is still an older game and at least for KOTOR I, may require you to tweak some settings on your computer if your running Windows 7.

Also, for KOTOR II check out some of the mods like the lost content mod which adds some new game play that Obsidian had to cut out in the original release.

Reviews of Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

This wheel is a blast! I was already addicted to Forza 2 and was moving steadily up in my career with the regular game controller. With this racing wheel (and pedals), I'm moving up even faster than before and the experience is dizzying literally. I have my setup about 3 feet from a 50" plasma and the feedback of the wheel is so realistic that I was getting odd dizzy effects when going in and out of tight corners because my body was expecting to feel real world forces from the seat against my back and sides and they of course were missing. Make no mistake, this isn't a bad thing its a testament to the realistic feedback of the wheel. You feel everything understeer, oversteer, grass, jerks when flying from grass back onto the pavement.

Prior to this wheel, I always detested driving the big American cars like the Camero or Corvette because they were so difficult to control with the normal controller they would constantly slide out and wag back and forth because there was no feel. Last night I nailed several races with both these cars because I was finally able to control the car through power slides and oversteers.

Setup was easy. Though the manual says a system upgrade was needed, I did not find this to be the case. The wheel paired up instantly and I started driving in Forza 2 immediately. The only thing I had to figure out was how to change the camera view (I like the in-car view) because they moved it from RT to X on this controller.

I found a chair with a sloped back on it, put a lumbar pillow in place and just rested the wheel on my legs. Surprisingly it stays in place well though you'll want to wear a pair of jeans. At first, the pedals kept sliding forward on my carpet causing me to crash a couple times. I finally placed them on one of my wife's yoga mats and its been fine since. The only beef I still have is that in intense situations the wheel moves around a bit. I may look for a small table to mount the wheel. Also note that the "in the lap" setup makes it impossible to drive with mostly straight arms like the pros. I end up sliding the wheel forward so that its just barely hanging on to the end of my knees so that I can straighten my arms more.

One last piece of advice: don't make the mistake I did and select the McClaren F1 (or similar super car) as your first drive and expect to see a big change. You'll still be all over the place on the road. Work your way up and learn the controller because the turning radius takes some time to learn. Once you do, you'll be amazed.

Pros:

Realistic feel, improved times, better control over rear wheel muscle cars

Trivial setup

High quality materials

Cons:

minor: Pedals slide without some kind of mat

This wheel kept me playing Forza 2 for hours! I am an 'old school' gamer and I could never get the hang of using a joystick to drive. Keep in mind that this is the 're-released' version of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel and thus it only includes a demo of Forza 2. The older models were recalled by MS, so beware of used ones.

First things first, the box that this wheel comes in is HUGE! The upside to the large box is that everything is put together and all you need to do is unpack the wheel and pedals and plug them together. You are going to want to plug the wheel into the wall and use the full feedback features. I don't think too many people are going to spend this kind of money on a racing wheel to sit on their sofa and play with the wheel on their lap 'wirelessly'. The benefit of the wireless part is that you don't need to worry about using up a USB port on the front of you Xbox 360 to plug this in. Connecting is easy, push the sync button on your console and on the wheel. Like magic they each recognize each other and you are in business. After plugging the foot pedals into the wheel via a little cable that looks like a telephone wire you are set to race. Feedback on Forza 2 was amazing! Understeer, bumps, warning strips, you feel everything.

Pros:

Top notch feel and finish, no corners cut on cheap plastic or details.

Works right out of the box. No drivers to fumble with.

Feedback (while connected to power source) is excellent.

Clamping system is easy to understand and use.

Doesn't tie up a spot on your Xbox USB ports.

Cons:

Minoryou need to find the right table/surface to mount this on. It is heavy!

Minorclamping system is excellent, however, after a long race it may move and need readjusting.

Conclusion:

Spend a few extra bucks and buy this wheel. I think the smiles that you will get from finding out how much fun racing games can be with this setup will be worth every penny!

I chose this steering wheel based on other reviews and I love driving games, but absolutely hate having to control a car with a thumb-sized joystick. My friend bought a steering wheel from another manufacturer and it absolutely was not up-to-par when playing PGR 3.

I popped the batteries in this sucker and started up NASCAR 08 and thought that this was a very solid wheel. However, I didn't read the instructions (Guys don't read instructions!) and originally thought the force feedback was pretty weak. I then put in DIRT and decided I would try the wheel plugged in to an electrical outlet. Oh man! This wheel feels as realistic as a video game wheel could feel. The force feedback is extremely realistic. For instance, on DIRT when you are in the air, the wheel frees up, however, when you hit the ground, the wheel will jerk as your virtual car hits the ground. In fact, it initially caught me off guard and almost jerked out of my hand.

With the standard controller, I found NASCAR 08 almost impossible to play. I simply could not control the car and I'm not new to this series. With this wheel, I had no problem. In fact, I find myself getting into the game so much, I have to remind myself to lighten my grip on the wheel.

I am truly amazed by the realistic feel of this steering wheel, specifically the force feedback applied during a game. I have always found myself wishing that a console could reproduce the steering experience I had with large, arcade style racing games. This particular wheel not only matches that performance, but goes above and beyond that.

I definitely recommend it for those of you who are really into simulation-style racing games.

Honest reviews on Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

I am an avid motorsport enthusiest, and a occasional video gamer. I am by no means an expert.

I have been playing Forza Motorsport games since they were released and love the realistic physics engine, however driving with a controler leaves much to be desired. I was hoping that at the very least, this wheel would help me improve lap times, as many of the reviews state.

Unfortunately, not only does the wheel take FOREVER to get used to, but I still can't even come close to my old lap times even after adjusting all the force feedback settings on the wheel; The wheel has a very wierd, gummy delayed feel, and there aren't enough adjustments to fix it. I don't have much else to compare this product to, but I have heard others speak highly of the realistic feel of other racing simulations.

While the force feedback is plenty strong, and at first feels very cool when running over rumble strips, you will quickly realize that it in no way provides any "feel" that will help control the car. The resistance is completely flat, which doesn't give you any feeling of speed like a normal car would, and the slow delay makes it way too easy to spin out. I have found that it is much faster to turn OFF the force feedback and to just rely on the screen.

While this is a good, reliable, sturdy product, I would NOT recomend this for use with Forza Motorsport. Instead, I would think this would add a fun demension to some of the more arcade like racing games like need for speed... etc...

This wheel takes a little getting use to but it is much easier then using the joystick controller. It is much easier to control the car in the turns and straight a ways. When first using the wheel it would feel as though sometimes the force feedback was a little delayed and therefore when you tried to compensate an over steer, control of the car was impossible. However if you just back of the accelerator and let the wheel go it will straighten up on it's own. Once you get use to the wheel you will not go back to the joystick. Also the wheel realy needs to be mounted (using the mounts system it comes with which is very easy to remove and leaves no marks)to tv tray table or other table. Although it is labled as a wireless controler ther is a power cable that must be pluged into an outlet and another cable that goes from the footpedals to the wheel. The foot pedals tend to slid a bit so you may need to secure them with something heavy in front like a weight to keep it from sliding away from your foot. I feel this wheel is a must have for any car game enthusiast.

Not always is a game based off a movie bad. There really are some good ones out there. However, there are some that truly are bad and should be avoided. X-Men: The Offical Game is that game. The game overall is pretty poor. The developers didn't seem to take it seriously. The game is meant to connect The second X-Men movie with the third one. Unfortunately, the game just reeks of bad quality. Perhaps if it had spent more time in development, the game could've been good. Instead it's rather bland.

The game begins with a training mission with each character. This is simply to get you adjusted to the gameplay mechanics. Later on you'll come to see these training missions are just a waste of time. Playing the game is already simple as can be. Afterwards, you go back to Alkali Lake as Nightcrawler and recover parts of Cerebro. Afterwards you'll be given a choice between which scenario you want.

Throughout the entire game you'll only get to play as three characters. Wolverine, Iceman or Nightcrawler. Each of them have their own abilities, and their own scenarios. Once you pick one character, you're stuck with them until their scenario is over. You won't really run into the other playable characters a lot, though. Neither are the scenarios very hard or exciting.

X-Men is pretty much a simple beat 'em up game, with little bits and pieces of story thrown in for good measure. The story isn't really impressive, though. It's hard to follow, and the game doesn't put an emphasis on it. What voice acting there is isn't so bad. At least the voices that come from the stars of the film. You'll recognize them instantly. Those who aren't voiced by celebrities don't sound all that great. The story also unfolds mostly through storyboards rather than cinematics.

But what emphasis there is on gameplay is simplistic and mediocre. All you've got to do is beat people up. You might have to open a door or something, but that's about it. It isn't that the game is a beat 'em up that frustrates me. It's that there's nothing more to it than button mashing. And there aren't a lot of combos to perform either. As I said, it's simplistic.

Outside of beating up your enemies, you may have to telport as Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler does have a healing ability, and so does Iceman, but I'm quite sure they didn't have one before. Iceman's levels are a little more interesting than the others, seeing as how his are constantly moving along. The bulk of the game, however, is simply beating up your enemies. And as I mentioned, there isn't a whole lot of variety to beating them up.

There are moments when the game can be hard. Well, frustrating actually. The game doesn't provide a lot of difficulty, but it does provide you with having to charge at your enemies head on to--you guessed it--beat them up. You'll have to run through bullets to get to most of them, and that can be a little annoying.

Boss fights aren't really exciting either. Those consist of you performing a simple little dash and hit sort of pattern most of the time. They have predictable patterns and don't really do a whole lot to get you. Again, this makes the game rather easy.

Where the game really hits a low point are the graphics. There are some glitches that might make you question the graphics. For example, you can knock an enemy into a wall and they'll get stuck there, unable to get out of it, and unable to damage you. Sometimes enemies will pop up out of no where and there's no explanation. If these sorts of things only happened once or twice, I wouldn't mind. But they don't. They happen numerous times and constantly. I wish I could say the game looks good, but for the XBOX360 it looks rather lame. It's a bit more colorful than the regular XBOX version, but it looks disturbingly identical in all respects. So if you've got the regular XBOX, it really isn't all that different.

It's also rather annoying that the character selection is only limited to three characters. There could've been more characters than just Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman. They each play a little differently, but they're the only three characters. That's rather disappointing.

This is nothing more than a Cash Cow game. It's nothing but a beat 'em up game with little variety. If it had spent more time in development, it probably would've been a better experience overall. There are better games out there. Ones with a bit more quality than this. I can't recommend this one. Not at all.

I really enjoyed the last few X-men games and was highly anticipating finally being able to play one on the 360. What a waste of money. While game play graphics are passable, transition, intro and cut scenes are terrible. Heck they aren't even animated. In fact the cut scenes look like they were developed with Flash and their quality is surpassed by South Park.

In terms of game play, you are restricted to three playable characters and mission based scenarios. Wolverine is straight button mashing hack and slash, Iceman is basic aerial navigation and shot lineup and Nightcrawler plays like the Prince of Persia's retarded cousin.

Save your money and if you really feel the need to spend some time with an awful video game, go dig up a copy of ET from the Atari 2800 land fill.

Best Deals for X-Men: The Official Game

I'm a huge X-men fan and I'm a fan of the movies. But I must admit this game was a bit misleading. After all I thought it was going to be based on The Last Stand due to it being "The Offical Game" but to my surprise it Isn't. Instead you play between X2 and X3 as Wolverine, Night Crawler and Ice-man. So after discovering what the game was all about, I bought it. I must admit it is rather enjoyable, but I still would have liked to play the story of the Last Stand instead. I would also like to say that I'm unhappy about the cut scenes. Since there more like moving art pieces than CG or clips of the films. All in all I dound the game enjoyable regardless, but I must warn that it has absolutely nothing to do with the film. In conclusion this game is good but next time they should just do a movie based version instead.

Honest reviews on X-Men: The Official Game

My 7-year-old grandson wanted this game to play on his new X-Box and he's happy with it, however, his four older brothers didn't like it all all. I guess it would depend on the age of the player, which is why I only give it 3 stars. It was certainly a very inexpensive game (compared to all the others I've purchased), so I can't complain about the price.

I can honestly say I am like a kid on Christmas when a 007 game is released. It's something about the 007 theme that makes you feel as if you are really a secret agent. I've been playing the 007 games since Rare came out with the infamous Goldeneye on the N64 and I haven't stopped since. With that said: let's get to the review.

The Graphics:

are simply underdone. I remember when Blood Stone came out a couple of years ago and I was in awe of the graphics even on my then non-HD Television. I put in 007: Legends and I am shaking my head on my new television. My HD Television looks weak with this game. The shading looks pitiful as do the scenery. The game reminds me of the last generation graphics on the PS2 and Xbox. Basic. Blotchy. There's pixelation on the top of the screen. (Note: this is not my television.) The only thing that might save the game's graphics is Daniel Craig's face but even then its not near as impressive. The developers did not try and push the graphics that are so common for today's games.

The Gameplay:

The gameplay is very sketchy at best. There seems to be no flow to the game. I have played on the middle difficult of Agent and it felt like I could never get to that sweet spot. The AI changes so rapidly and inconsistently that is it hard to find a middle ground. I enjoy hard games but this game was just making me frustrated with it's poor gameplay. The AI's are also very strong for their type and theres no seconds to catch your breath before a hit marker pops up on your HUD. Even on Operative, I still felt the inconsistency. The AI's are also very generic and say the same phrases over and over, "He's wounded!". At the end of one of the five phases that are the movies, my head hurt and I had to step away. Now onto the environment... it does not feel like 007. It feels like a very cookie cutter map. You can only really blow up barrels. There's no 007 stunts that make you think, "Hey, Daniel Craig would do that in the movie." You also use your camera for practically everything which is okay but it's interesting at times to try and figure out what you are doing with the different settings. The guns are a saving grace. The customization on the guns allow you to change up what you are doing at key points and add attachments that can really help cut down some AI when you can lock onto them.

The length is quite decent and you keep going through the side objectives and the like.

The Story:

The storylines are the best part of the game and I feel like the developers wanted to keep the same feel of the movies in the game. I feel like they have accomplished this and I did enjoy seeing the famous 007 scenes. However, I wish there was more of a tease of Skyfall. I know that Skyfall is supposed to come out as a separate DLC but I guess it would be easier for them to just release the game with Skyfall included in a few weeks... but hey more bucks down the road.

Multiplayer:

I wanted to like the multiplayer on Xbox Live but I just couldn't. The graphics are pretty terrible and the movement feels like you have something blocking your path when you run. (Like In COD: Black Ops when someone runs too close to you and you slow down.) The same customization really exists in multiplayer as it does in the campaign but it doesen't leave much to the imagination. I feel like this is a rehashed second gen Goldeneye again. It is also quite choppy gameplay that leaves you shaking you head.

Pros:

Length

The classic story

Gun customization in campaign.

Cons:

Terrible graphics

Choppy gameplay

Inconsistent AI

Fight Scenes that you either make it or break it and get reset back.

Multiplayer very slow and non-imaginative.

At timesvery boring.

Bottom Line-

I just do not think that this game is the best that it can be. 007 is such an epic franchise with so many beautiful moments (and women) and I think that Eurocom gave a half attempt at it to bank some money. I hate to say it but I think that the remade Goldeneye made actually be even better than this game. I can only give it 2 stars as it just doesn't make you feel the way that 007 should make you feel.

Thanks for reading.

I went into this game knowing that it wouldn't be the best game that I've every played. It doesn't disappoint. If you're looking for a quick, fun James Bond adventure, this isn't it. The graphics tear frequently, the AI is bad in all of the worst ways and unnecessary stealth elements are littered throughout. The only good part about the game is that the shooting mechanics are decent.

The story is all right, consisting of James Bond reliving a few of his missions. Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, License to Kill, Moonraker and Die Another Day make up this trip through memory lane. Each has been updated with a modern coat of paint, such as the implementation of computers and cellphones throughout.

To make matters worse, the publisher has lost the rights to the content so I believe that the Skyfall story content isn't available to download any more.

While this isn't the worst James Bond game I've ever played, it's up there. I would recommend the great James Bond game, Bloodstone, instead.

I was very excited to play this game.... I'm a long time 007 fan, and I absolutely loved the Goldeneye remake! The first missions of this game are pretty promising, and the overall feel is pretty similar to the other recent Bond games. Unfortunately, this game jumps around so much and offers so little in the way of challenge, that it falls flat on it's face for the pre-mature ending.

PROS

Good graphics

Great music and sound

Excellent Production Value

CONS

Repetitive

Easy

Short

Awful Narrative

Abrupt Ending
