Toy Soldiers Review

Toy Soldiers
Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars

I got this for $2.49 and that price point will affect my review.

Toy soldiers is a tower defense game-except the player has the ability to man the towers. The variety of towers in the game isn't much. There are only 5 tower types, but you get the option to upgrade them 3 times as the game progresses. The player also has the option of commandeering extra units like planes, tanks and a sniper tower that can effect the outcome. There are enough enemy types to keep you busy and strategizing on what towers should be built.Boss fights are a bonus. The scenarios can get repetitive but overall a very good game for $2.49. 8/10.

Bought this on sale for 2.50$ and worth the cost. While this is a STEAM game it also has GFWL in it. However as of last patch the option to play without it has been added, however the game will not launch if your STEAM account is in offline mode, so you still must have internet at all times which is why I rated this game only 4 instead of 5.

It's a lot of fun for a tower defense game but it rightfully gets its 9.99 price for it's lack of content. It's a fun game to come back to when your bored.

I was big into Computer Games in the Past. They had great Story Telling Adventures. I bought this Game and Have not Played it hardly at All. I will enjoy it because it part of my Library. I would say it is a good game.

I played through the levels. the replay is just more enemy troops coming at you... I found it very hard to move the tanks around...then again they are wind up versions on WWI tanks...

The Hobbit Review

The Hobbit

I just finished The Hobbit for Xbox last night and I have to say it was VERY well done. I can't believe it got lousy reviews from the magazines! I guess they were trying to compare it to LOTRwhich I didn't care for (the games)other than the first onewhich this is BY FAR better. It's very much like Zelda Windwakerwith the exception of one particularly difficult level mid way through where it becomes this huge brawl and you die repeatedly! But after getting past that messthe game opens up and becomes a huge puzzle solving thing where the puzzles are hugely fun! Go figure? The character animations are average, but the level designs are supurb! The music is spectacular, and the artistic direction is excellent! A lot of work went into crafting this great game! I highly recommend it!

As an avid Hobbit fan, I was compelled to purchase this game. Having read the book is not critical, however, your enjoyment will be greatly enhanced knowing about hobbits, Bilbo and the others from middle earth. The amazing thing is this game is almost as much fun to watch another play as it is to play your self. Some of the tasks are fun and others are very difficult. Normally I do not like the violent games, but the battles are against goblins, wizards, spiders, and a dragon. Again, some easy and some are very hard.

Hours and hours of fun. I highly recommend this game. (For what it's worth, I am in my late 50's).

I and my 6yr old son have enjoyed this game so much! The narration almost stayed true to the original story. It is quite challenging at certain levels. But soon even kids can defeat wight lord!I think it is one of the best games we played so far. Shrek 2 was fun as well as Spyro a hero's tail and finding Nemo. Most of the games available in this platform are rated Teen or Mature which is not suitable for small kids either because of the difficulty or graphic content. Very few games are really worth spending your money and Hobbit is worth every penny. If anyone likes my list and have any suggestions for new game please let me know so that I can play them.

Honest reviews on The Hobbit

I absolutely loved this game. It took me a couple of weeks of playing but I finally beat it. It was challenging without being impossible. There were a few tough spots but after trying to get past them a few times and developing a strategy it was do-able. I reccommend this game it was a lot of fun.

Lego Rock Band - Nintendo Wii Reviews

Lego Rock Band - Nintendo Wii
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

We love Rock Band in our house but, by our own admission, we aren't great musicians. Well okay, one of my kids is, but it's a drag when there's only one and you can't simply 'play along' as the game advances because the songs get that much more difficult.

But with this version you can play along not only without a penalty for choosing 'easy', you can even choose a super easy/no fail mode so you simply can't mess up and still have fun playing. If you don't do anything you won't get the stars you need but if you do a minimal amount (i.e. hit ANY drum pad when the note needs to be played or 'strum' the guitar/bass at the right time no need to press a button or simply speak in time to the microphone) you'll be fine.

Lots of the same fun things as in Rock Band make your own people, buy cool outfits & things for them. In addition this version has challenges which you can play and fun lego scenes occur as you 'rock' the house (typically you earn these as you successfully play songs in venues). The first one (and on a trailer so I'm not giving much away) is playing loud enough (getting enough stars) to knock down a building. And yes, we have successfully completed these challenges with two out of the three on the no fail mode.

This version is clearly geared for a slightly younger set both in terms of the no-fail option and in terms of avoiding excessive profanity/explicit content in songs. Makes us no never mind we're enjoying it immensely!

edited to add:

The review who said this does not have online support is right. For those familiar with Rockband, this version is like a hybrid track pack. You get new people, scenarios and venues to work your way through, but the songs are the songs which are included and you cannot buy new songs to play (I can't see that this'd change with this version going to the online store to buy new tracks is not even shown as an option).

This is the first "band" type game we've owned. My son has played Guitar Hero at a friends and wanted that one but I was hesitant because of the play list. Doing a little research at our local video gaming store, I found out both the Rockband and Guitar Hero folks were releasing more family friendly play lists. We took a look at both but when we found Lego Rock Band and also Rock Band Country the choice was easy. After the first night's jam session we're all hooked. It's so much fun for the entire family and my husband and I are introducing our 9 year old to some great music. Our son has been a Queen fan for years but now he's into Bryan Adams, Tom Petty and Bon Jovi. Like all the other Lego games, this one doesn't disappoint at all. The in-between videos are funny, the whole lego character build gives you tons of combinations and all the venues are "very cool" according to WolfJack lead guitarist of the band Howl (current on tour in our basement).

I highly recommend this one for kids but all the adults in the house are enjoying it just as much. My husband's band "Blind Shrimp" just bought a new bus and I may never see him again! Guess I'll just have to become a groupie.

A simple two part review:

First, Lego Rock Band is cool. My kids (7,6,4) love it, and we've had a great time playing it today. Minifigs look great, songs are interesting, and the Super Easy modes (and especially the no drum pedal) option are really nice for the smaller kids.

Second, no additional content for the Wii! Contrary to what the product description says above, you can not use DLC from Rock Band 2 on Lego Rock Band if you have a Wii. If you have a Wii you will only ever play Lego Rock Band with those 45 songs. That's it. This was incredibly disappointing, because there are a ton of previous and downloadable RB songs that all my kids know, but that they need the extra-Easy modes to be able to play.

I absolutely would not have bought the game had I understood that, and I would have known if the product description hadn't been wrong, so I'm very frustrated. That being said, it's not that Lego Rock Band for the Wii is a bad game experience, it's just a big step backward for Rock Band on the Wii.

Honest reviews on Lego Rock Band - Nintendo Wii

***This game CANNOT be played with just a Wiimote it requires additional equipment.***

You will need at least a microphone or wii guitar to play and you can add a drum set & second guitar if you like. We purchased our microphone at a used game store for thirteen dollars and are using guitars from the Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock, G.H. World Tour, and an older G.H. Les Paul. We are also using the drum set from G.H. World Tour.

My husband loves to play guitar hero but the game is designed for teenagers to adults (sexy, somewhat scary characters and heavy rock music). Since we have two young children in our home, ages 7 & 1, I wanted a more family friendly option that the whole family could play together. We found it with the Lego Rock Band!

This game allows for up to four players: singer (microphone), guitar, bass guitar, and drums so it is great for families or groups of friends. We've had 3 people playing so far and it was great fun for all. My favorite thing about this game is that you can change the difficulty level for play before each song. This was important for us because originally we had 1 guitar and we were sharing it and taking turns playing. Dad could set his for "expert" on his turn and I could change it to "easy" on mine without having to back out to the title menu. Now we have multiple guitars, a drum set, & the microphone so we can all play at once but we trade parts between songs a lot and like the ease of changing the difficulty to make it challenging for each individual(our toddler sings along and provides the dancing and often helps out the drummer by banging away).

My 7 year old tried to play Guitar Hero with his dad several times but the songs kept shutting off because he would make too many mistakes and drag the crowd meter down too low. On the Lego Rock Band he can play either guitar part or sing and make it through the game feeling successful and having fun on the beginner or easy mode. He also has played the drum on the beginner setting and has been very successful in his mind, but the rest of us have great difficulty making it through a song when he plays the drum since he doesn't maintain the beat for us and he plays all sorts of drumming that doesn't belong:)

"Beginner" setting is great for younger kids since it allows any level of musical ability (or lack) progress through the game. On this setting the singer needs to make noise throughout the song (attempt to sing, say the words, sing la la la etc). This setting for the guitar parts means you strum when the notes come by but aren't held responsible for the fret. For the drum you just have to hit any pad when the note comes by...my son just bangs wildly on all the drums and attains about 80% or better on a song for drumming but as mentioned above it is hard on the other players since all his wild drumming is played as the drum beat for the song and leaves others nothing to follow but the visuals.

There is a just-play mode & a story mode. Both are fun to play and in either mode each player has the option of difficulty level. The story mode allows you to build up fans & money by playing gigs (getting stars for songs). You can spend your money on new guitars & stuff for your band. The practice mode just lets you pick & play from the song list. You can also make your own set list & play multiple songs in the order you choose.

I recommend this game for families to play together or for children who are interested in the rock band or guitar hero games but may not need the exposure to the costuming in the "teen" games or who are more interested in POP music than rock or metal. (My niece & nephew are both teenagers and while they prefer the "Teen" band games at their own home, they are not above jumping into our Lego Rock Band when they are visiting). The set list has a sampling of different songs that allow something for everyone and the characters while not sexy or scary are amusing and fun to customize and add a sense of humor to the game.

Lego Rock Band ROCKS! It has a "Super Easy" mode, so even my 5-year-old could enjoy playing (granted, we're a musical family and he plays lots of rhythms already). My 10-year-old loves it, and so do I. We also have the "regular" Rock Band 2 (and the Beatles tracks), but this is actually my favorite right now. It's fun all playing together, and my daughter enjoys "Story Mode" when playing by herself. I had been hesitant to buy it, and I'm so glad I did. I think we'll be getting lots of use out of this disc.

I like the game. Its not up to Halo standards, but its a fun FPS. Unfortunately, I found bugs (not the kind you kill in the game). It freezes sometimes, doesn't always load right and occassional video dropout.

Having said that...I doubt seriously anyone will read this review who isn't already sold on the game. Have fun.

I have been playing the Unreal series since I was about 6 years old and I remember buying this game with my dad and we had played it for hours. Now I have gotten it on the Xbox and I love it...PLUS IT HAS CO-OP! Co-Op for me is like the greatest thing other than the online multiplayer. If you played the first Unreal on the PC and liked it (you better have...lol) then you will love this one. Sure it isn't exactly from the first one's universe but there are many things that will remind you of it. One of the greatest battles was the Boss that was like a huge spider with tiny spiders everywhere. That one took forever (but in a good way)! Very fun and I hope to see you online!

Great game for the casual gamer. Good graphics, lots of great weapons and not too hard. Some games of this type can be very frustrating for people that are not hard core gamers. This game is great because it's a blast to kick but!

Honest reviews on Unreal 2- The Awakening

Every review I read had something to do with Halo. Just forget about that. Unreal has been out before halo evan began so how can it be ripping off of Halo. They do have similaritys, but Unreal II is more like the orginal Unreal that came out in the 90's. So my question is how can it be ripping off Halo, maybe Halo is ripping off Unreal. And further more a rip off of a good game is still a good game.

Now onto the review. This takes place in space, (sounds kinda like Halo I have to admit) and you have to go investigate some distress call from earth. When you get there everyone has been killed except for one surviver, he managed to get a valuable peice of somethin somethin and the aliens are going on a rampage. The game gos on but I don't want to spoil it for you just incase you want to get it.

The graphics are decent, some nice lighting, cool weapons designed for alien killing goodness. The load times are suprisingly long, but there is stuff on screen to read that keeps you interesested. The moltiplayer is probably the best part of the game. Overall its a fun game and it only cost about ten bucks, so if you want a change of the average first person shooter give it a shot.

I've read a lot of negative reviews on this site for this product, and feel I need to address a few things in fairness. This game was designed for (at the time) high-end PCs. This is very clearly a port, and as such the graphics did indeed take a hit. That being said, this doesn't affect gameplay whatsoever. The dialogue in the cut-scenes was originally meant to be optional depending on who you spoke to in the removed "free-roaming" mode, and what you said to them. It makes the conversations feel very awkward and long. The variety in environments is nice, and the difficulty felt appropriate to the situations. None of the missions were boring, and some showed a real spark of creativity. If you played "Mace Griffin" or any of the "007" titles, you have a good idea what to expect. I would recommend this title for around $10.00. It would get a better score if the fact that it is a port wasn't so glaringly obvious. For 360 owners, this title is NOT backwards compatable.

I purchased this headset as soon as it was available from Amazon. I have been using this headset daily since and it works and looks great. I have been using this headset for my Xbox 360 (party chats while gaming), my PS3 (also used for chatting while gaming) and I also have it synced to my Iphone 4 (used for listening to my music & calls). The style of it is nice and shiny (prone to fingerprints through) and feels comfortable (comes with different size ear pieces). I was constantly asking people about the sound quality on their end to make sure i came through clear and loud, which i did. On my end everyone sounded the same. The buttons on this headset feel nice and respond well and the ability to switch from bluetooth to xbox is done with a simple flick of a button. I was using it for my phone quite often until i have to admit I felt like a weirdo wearing it all the time in public (i never really been a fan of headsets for cell phones) and it does say xbox 360 on the side of it, wish it didn't but not a big deal and I really purchased this for my xbox and PS3. I also do own the original wireless headset and feel like both are great headsets. In my opinion if you are looking for a wireless headset this is the way to go. A couple more dollars than the original one but you can use it for everything. I rated this headset a 4 instead of a 5 because I have had some problems with it acting weired if I had wanted to run upstairs to grab something from the kitchen (I game in my basement) it would cut out or people wouldn't hear me, might be because i went out of range then back in? But after turning it off and on real quick that would solve the problem. Hope this review helps!

After reading all the reviews on this item from various sites, I decided to buy it because there were mixed reviews. The xbox 360 Wireless headset with bluetooth is good or bad depending on your qualifications of being good. The good and bad reviews that I have read have completely different sides to the same thing. For example, the sound is great and the sound is horrible. This is what I dislike about reviews, because they are opinionated

Before I used the product, I read the manual paper they gave. I also charged it before use because that is what it told me to do. Reading is fundamental.

I am not a professional reviewer so this is my opinion on what people should think about and expect to see when they purchase this product.

The Headset Overall

I think this is a good product and know that there are things that people will be very picky about. One thing is the sound. The sound is different than you are used to, of course. It's because it is a different type of headset. The sound is something you have to experience and see for yourself. It may take getting used to, but will work out if you believe in it. If all fails, return it.

People say there is a buzzing or slight static noise coming from the earpiece. There is, however, it is so slight, you could only hear it when you are in a quiet place. I walked into my garage and tested this, and there is that little, tiny static noise that people will hate this mic for. I, for one, do not notice the sound unless I really concentrate on it. That, you must also try for yourself. I don't think it's very troublesome because as I play my games, people are talking and communicating and when on bluetooth, the other persons phone will pick up their background noise therefore you hear it and that static will be replaced with the persons voice or background noise. Every once and a while, there is also a little small beep or something that makes it sound like it idled or disconnected and reconnected which is weird or is just the cutting out of other talkers.

The mic has a weird feel to it. The earpiece is on your ear, and is a piece of plastic, but isn't a problem to me. The earpiece on the other hand, has a unique feel. I am using the smallest rubber piece because the others were quite big for my ear. The feel on your ear is different. There are little things that bother me when using it. One is the plastic piece that you connect to the headset. There was a little piece of plastic that was around the loop that poked my ear, so I filled it down slightly. Now when the earpiece is in your ear, it's not all the way in your ear. It is slightly in your ear. It feels like it is hanging a little bit, but when I shake my head it does not come off at all. Once again, you need to experience it for yourself to see if you like it or not. It may take a little getting used to.

The mute button is a pain too. When you press it, it pushes the earpiece and it kind of hurts. Really annoying.

[Update 4/6/12: The mute button can be pressed directly, which made it poke my ear, and indirectly, which doesn't hurt at all. Instead of pressing the center of the button, you can press lower or higher to mute or use the "action" button on bluethooth. Took me a while, but it makes a difference.]

XBOX 360 CHAT

Xbox 360 Chat is different in party chat and game chat. Different games have different chat in which the sound is slightly different, but this is for party chat.

Now for the mic. Since the mic is right next to your cheek, there are limits to what it picks up. For example, I tested what this headset picks up by joining my friends XBL party. I told him to repeat everything I said. In this experiment I found that it has a strange way of picking things up. When I whisper, the headset picks it up. Screaming will not be screaming, but rather talking loud and sounding like you are farther away from your headset because it's next to your cheek. When I speak in a really-moderately soft voice with no bass in my voice, it does not pick it up. That is what I dislike most about the headset, but only if I'm trying to talk soft due to people sleeping, which I don't anyways.

For the people on the other end, they hear you as softer than you were when you were using a wired basic microsoft wired headset. You are heard like you are further away from your mic when people hear you, but it doesn't seem to bother people. When you talk though, there is feedback from the background. What I was told was that there was the sound of air after I spoke, but stopped withing milliseconds when I stopped talking. That may be a setback because if you're playing loud music or you have a sound system, it may bother people.

BLUETOOTH

Bluetooth is a great idea for this headset and might have some flaws in it as well

When speaking through the headset to another caller, you sound different, just like you were when on xbox. You sound further away, but they can still hear you fine. I haven't experienced much with the Bluetooth yet, but it is relatively the same as when you're on Xbox Live.

The sound quality is pretty good for me. I tested it on my voice mail, which I recommend everyone to do. The automated part is quite loud, but the voice message that a person left is on the slight soft side. In a call, the sound is good, if adjustment are needed, use the volume. I found that the volume is better at a medium to high volume for the best sound, but for the low volume, it may sound fuzzy.

I played music on the xbox 360 headset with bluetooth from my phone. It sounds the same as you were if you were using headphones or earphones to me. Just adjust the volume as necessary.

Overall

This mic cannot be judged on any one person or even in several reviews. I read reviews that are good and bad and I couldn't find a moderate review explaining why it is good or bad, so I decided to write one for myself to try and explain my experience. If you are reading this review, this is what I have experienced and if you decided to purchase this product, you may have a different experience when using it.

If you have any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.

UPDATE 12/12/12: So it has been about a year now and the headset seems to be working just fine. I have noticed that if I walk far away enough from my Xbox, the mic would disconnect and sometimes the people in my party would hear a loud screeching noise. When that happens, they tell me and i turn my headset off and then on again.

I have switched to the new SLIM Xbox. When I did so, I noticed a static noise. This is the same static noise that I heard before when I walked into my garage or whatnot. The static noise is more noticeable now. It might be because I transferred from one system to another but I don't know. The static is more noticeable when you initially turn it on and no one is talking to you, but you forget about it during your gaming experience.

Battery life on this headset is still superb. I use it daily so it dies every day. I play on average about 9 hours a day on and off. After around 8 hours, the mic will make a single notification notifying you it is running low on battery power, having roughly 20-30 minute left. After a certain amount of time, it begins to beep constantly. Maybe every 10 seconds, which is very annoying. That beep or noise is telling you that you need to charge it. I turn it off and charge it immediately because the sound is quite irritating. It takes about an hour or two to fully recharge again.

The headset might be dying on me though. In some instances, I walk too far from my Xbox and does the disconnect thing and the headset won't reconnect. I try to sync it to my Xbox and it still doesn't work. I plug it in the charger and wait for it to fully charge again and turn it on. Then it starts to work, sometimes. To avoid this, just put your headset down if you are going to walk to a place that is too far from your Xbox or has walls that the signal cannot get across.

All in all, since the price dropped $30 since I bought this headset, I would definitely buy it again. I would have two, so if one runs out of batteries, I have a spare.

If you are looking to try it out, go for it. The worst that can happen is you going back and returning it.

Best Deals for Xbox 360 Wireless Headset with Bluetooth

Love the fact that you can chat with your buddies on Xbox and switch over to receive calls from your phone. Battery life is excellent. Before I used it for the first time, I charged it for 2 hours and after that, I have been using it for two weeks now without charging. Of course it helps if you turn it off when you're not using it. It's also very easy to setup and sync with your devices just like any bluetooth. I have had many bluetooths before and have never used them as much as I use this one. Invest in one!

Honest reviews on Xbox 360 Wireless Headset with Bluetooth

I am reading the other reviews and people are complaining about things that I have yet to encounter. Let me focus on what people are saying. As for it being uncomfortable, I actually find it to be very comfortable. I didnt bother switching the ear bud size because the one it came with fit perfect. The little loop that goes around your ear doesn't bother me at all. Ive been playing borderlands 2 for.... should I dare say... 5+ hours :o haha but it didnt bother me at all. Just like all other ear buds, if you do wear it for a long time your ear will get uncomfortable although mine hasn't... so keep that in mind. People are complaining about there not being a separate cable or attachment to switch to Bluetooth, people its on the freaking earpiece itself and literally takes less then a second to switch it to Bluetooth.... -____I find that the volume is perfect, its crystal clear and I hear no buzzing noise whatsoever. Turning it up or down is easy and you can hear if its going up or down. The mute button is on the actual front side and you must push it in (towards your ear) It doesnt hurt at all, you dont need to push it hard, just a simple click. One thing that I absolutely love about the mute feature on this is that when you have your mic muted, it actually beeps every 3 minutes reminding you that its muted. With other mics I get so into the game I forget to un-mute and end up talking to myself for a while until i figure it out haha. Turning it on it a synch and switching from player 1-4 is super super easy, one press of the button and there you go, no switching controllers or signing out of accounts and re-signing back in. There is one things that I have come to notice that is a little off with the device and thats the fact that it will sometimes randomly get choppy. Its happened twice so far and its as easy as holding the power button and turning it back on (takes like 3 seconds for this process) Over all im incredibly pleased with this Xbox 360 wireless mic/Bluetooth!

This is really not a game. There is no career mode with tour buses and goals that typical games have. I think this is a good thing. The achievement that you earn is the ability to play guitar or bass. That's all I'm looking for. If you bought the first edition of Rocksmith and did not like it very much (I didn't like it), don't let that prevent you from getting this. This is like another planet.

Everyone is talking about Session Mode and I'm sure that will be a big selling point for people that already know how to play. For me, a beginning bassist, it's nice to have the band backing, but randomly hitting notes when you have no real idea of what you are doing is cool but I'm sure once I get the hang of playing, this part of the game will be much more enjoyable.

If you want to learn to play, get this. I am doing bass only but I am sure the guitar play works the same way. I am using the Lessons and here is how they are laid out:

You first choose your instrument and click Lessons if you are a noob like me. The first couple show you how to hold the instrument and things like that. Then you start getting videos of different techniques and each of those lessons comes with a practice track. Here is where Rocksmith shines! Using the Riff Repeater feature, you can adjust the difficulty level from 0-100 using a slider: the lower the difficulty, the fewer notes that will scroll on by. If you start at say, 30, you can play that difficulty until you nail all of the notes and then move up to 40 and so on until you reach 100 which is all of the notes.

But that is not all. In addition to choosing the difficulty level, you can also use a slider to increase/decrease the speed. So if you want all notes but really slow, you can have that. If you want fast but fewer notes to play, then you can have that and everything in between. You can also loop the tracks so you play it a couple of times instead of just one, or you can have an infinite loop and the track will rewind and begin again until you stop it. You can pause and ramp up the difficulty and go right back into the track. If you overstep your ability, just pause, open Riff Repeater and readjust as you need to.

This is really an educational package for the Xbox rather than a game but it's amazing. I received it on launch day from Amazon and have been strictly using the Practice tracks in the Lessons and working on the Walking Bass lines in there at slow speed with fewer notes. I've inched up the meters a few times but need to master the level that I'm at now before moving on. Playing the track in an infinite loop has me playing it over and over and over and over again and I can feel my fingers beginning to stretch out and get more comfortable moving around the fingerboard.

The idea that you can plug in that guitar that's collecting dust rather than having to purchase special instruments to play with this game makes it such a worthwhile buy. It will be frustrating in the beginning if you've never played before (I know the feeling very well) but you really do find yourself saying "I'll never get this" and then all of a sudden you nail it and get such a rush. Then you add a few more notes, up the speed a little and get that too and you can't pull yourself away from playing because you realize that you can do it.

I have had DVD tutorials for bass and while good, they don't provide the instant feedback that Rocksmith does. The presentation in this game is lightyears ahead of the original. Loading times are fast and the options were created to accommodate learners of all kinds and proficient players as well.

I just can't say enough about this "game." It's just amazing, fun, and really teaches you to play. While there is no substitute for a real teacher and learning theory and the like, if you are just a hobbyist looking to learn to play some songs and jam out on a real guitar, this is definitely for you.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My 10 year old son and 39 year old self are having a blast with this game. Neither of us has ever played a "real" guitar before. We have played guitar hero, but there is just one strum bar and five buttons for frets on those guitars. For Rocksmith we have a 6 string guitar with 22 frets. That was (and still is) extremely intimidating to us.

Rocksmith came with

USB plug from guitar to my 360

6 ft HDMI cable

An audio adapter for the 360

An audio cable

Lucky for me my 360 is plugged into a receiver via HDMI so the only cable I needed to use was the USB plug from guitar to XBox.

First thing I had to do was tune my guitar. Rocksmith walked me through it and checked the tones for me (good thing for a tone deaf guy). The cool thing (for me at least) was that the software knew the problem before I did. If I hit the wrong string, it knew and told me to check which string I hit.

So I went through about 5 tutorials and tried to 100% them. The tutorials are excellent. It starts easy...if you can't get it, then it slows it down to get you used to moving across the frets and strings in time. For a noob like me, this was great. The game amazed me when it told me exactly what I was doing wrong in the tutorials (ie: wrong string, wrong fret...it knew). After you get through the first test, it does the same riff with more notes and complexities. It allowed me to practice and have a sense of success before it upped the level.

You can choose to play lead guitar, rhythm, or bass. You can use your electric guitar for bass, but I have not tried yet. I have only tried lead guitar so far but plan on trying the others.

There are 20 or so more lessons to do, but I was interested in trying a song (knowing I would fail). Low and behold, they actually up the level of play on each song as you improve. So the first time through the easier songs was not impossible even for me to achieve some success. I felt like "I can actually do this with some practice".

The part I recently tried was the guitarcade which is awesome. Retro style arcade games that work on your guitar technique. The first game is similar to jet pack joyride, but based solely on how loud you strum the strings and control the volume. The next game is like the old Root Beer Tapper game but you have to hit the right string to "shoot" down the right area. I had trouble with volume and finding strings and these were fantastic ways to practice. It includes high scores, mini achievements, and online rankings. I also tried the slide arcade and a duck shooting game that helps practice slides, frets and strings. There are many more arcade games that I have not tried because I don't know the concept (ie: bending) yet. Some games are more fun than others, but the fun and rewarding way to practice is top notch.

The main thing this does not do is teach you to play guitar by reading sheet music. That was not important to me, but worth noting.

We try and limit video game play for our kids, but this game is so educational that we bend the rules and let our kids play Rocksmith at times when they normally are not allowed to play games.

I highly recommend this game for anyone who wants to learn to play a real guitar for fun. It provides learning, fun, and a sense of accomplishment. It will provide our family many hours of fun time together.

Best Deals for Rocksmith 2014 Edition - Xbox 360 (Cable Included)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program To be clear, you MUST own, or have one on its way, either an electric guitar or an electric bass. One or the other is required to learn using Rocksmith. Those old plastic instruments we all came to love and adore, then ignore, do NOT work with Rocksmith.

Also, be sure you get what you need. If you have a previous version of the program, and already bought the guitar/bass to USB cable, you don't need to buy the cable included edition again. The old cable works just fine.

Why does Rocksmit seem to work where DVDs and books fail? It teaches you actual SONGS, real songs, not wimpy, silly lullabies or children's songs. You want to learn Slayer? You can. This is the goal of pretty much every guitar player (not to play Slayer necessarily, but play a son in general!) you want to play like your rock heroes. The books and DVDs are good with teaching basics, getting you started, but they tend to just whet your appetite, not get you on the fret like Rocksmith does.

This being said, Rocksmith isn't easy. You won't likely be playing like Randy Rhodes after an hour or two. It will take practice, REAL practice, but... this is again where Rocksmith shines. You play games that help you practice. They can be fun, to the point that you don't really realize you are actually practicing. It's brilliant.

You can adjust the difficulty to suit your needs. If you've ever played, I recommend starting in the 10-20 range, if you've never played, hit the bottom and work your way up. And the most important part: DON'T FEEL BAD STARTING LOW! You WILL get better if you stick with this crazy "game."

Where the game excels at teaching you is the "riff repeater." If you have a part in a song that you absolutely just cannot get, fire up the riff repeater. This thing just adds to the brilliance! It lets you choose the speed and difficulty of the section ramp up the difficulty as you seem to start learning the sections.

Session mode, when I am good enough at actually playing, will definitely be fun. It's OK right now, but I don't feel like I know enough to really enjoy having a band backing up my playing. And it's cool because it tries to match how you are playing with a level of randomness it's not just the same beat and riffs over and over.

And it really does start at the beginning. Really, the beginning. How to hold a pick, tune your axe and so on. I say it again it shines the brilliance of the entire package.

AND THEN there is the option to use a TON of equipment, really expensive equipment in the real world, using just the 360 to simulate the tones and so on that only certain amps and equipment can lend the guitar.

A note on configuration. When the pamphlet included tells you not to include your TV in the mix, and they tell you not to plug your system in w/ HDMI or optical, they mean it. I tried it and the lag really did kill the fun and the lessons. Please make sure you have this configured for the best option to "win" at it before playing, or you will be disappointed.

Bottom line if you've ever wanted to learn the guitar and not have to pay for a lesson every day, this is the best $60 (or $80 if you need the cable) you will ever spend. But like anything, you really only get what you put into it, so make sure to leave your mind open and give the program a chance to teach you. They say 60 days on Ubi's website, and if you stick with it I'm sure 60 days is more than enough to make you quite a few levels better than where you are. Well, unless you are a Randy Rhodes naturally.

Honest reviews on Rocksmith 2014 Edition - Xbox 360 (Cable Included)

If you are a beginner or an advanced player this game is for you. No matter what skill you are the game adapts to you and now rocksmith 2014 has new integrated features that will blow you away. I preordered this game and received it the day it was released. Right after work I turned on my console and started playing it. I have to say it was the best moment ever. I was waiting to play session mode and this new mode is so awesome because the virtual band plays along with you. If you stop they stop, and if you play loud also the instruments play louder. If you are thinking of getting this game, don't hesitate to get it, because on the long run you will become a better guitarist or base player. I will play this game with family and friends and finally. Thank you Ubisoft for making the greatest games ever. I am loving rocksmith 2014 so far and can't wait for the new one to come out.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Rocksmith 2014 Edition - Xbox 360 (Cable Included)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program To start, here's who I am and what I hoped to get out of Rocksmith. I'm a drummer. I think all drummers are frustrated guitarists and all guitarists would like to play drums. I've owned guitars, still own a couple, but never found the time, or really, was willing to dedicate the time to lessons. Rocksmith came to my rescue. Like many people, I love to play video games, and enjoy things like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, although I always found them to be games, and not realistic, since what you do to "win" on screen has little to do with how you'd play an instrument live.

Rocksmith is a great game and so much more than a game. It comes in three flavors for Xbox: Just the game, the game with the cable, and the game, cable and a guitar. I got the version with a cable included and am using my own guitar, so that is what I am reviewing. If you do need a guitar, the Rocksmith version which includes one presently comes with an Epiphone Les Paul Junior. It isn't a bad deal if you need a starter guitar. A Jr. usually sells for about $130, and this game costs $80 withouta guitar, so a combo selling for $190 is a decent deal. That said, keep in mind typically you aren't going to want to play a gig with a Junior.

So what's in the box?

* Rocksmith 2014

* ¼" audio-jack cable

You might assume, at first glance, that the game is similar in concept to other Guitar hero/Rock Band type games. But it goes way beyond that. Rather than "just hitting colors" to emulate playing an instrument, Rocksmith takes you down the path of learning to play guitar. You may see familiar style screens, a huge fretboard scrolling at you, lyrics, etc. but this is not Guitar Hero. Don't mistake what I am saying the mini-games are present and they are a lot of fun but they are not the primary focus. I did not play Rocksmith 2013, but by all accounts the 2014 version keeps the "guitar lessons" intact while adding much more fun/games. You choose what instrument you will be learning/playing, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, or bass guitar.

You must use a real guitar or bass with this game. For example, You CANNOT use the plastic guitars that come with Guitar Hero. The included cable is a standard guitar cable with an Xbox adapter on one side, so you can disconnect that if you wanted to use this as a straight ¼" guitar cable.

Those expecting all game play, different gaming modes, may be disappointed. There are some "missions" you will play out, but the goal here is really to learn to play guitar. You start off with very basic tasks, how to hold the guitar and pick, tuning the guitar. In the game play, you progress from notes to chords to songs. Of course, if you already know some things, you can skip ahead to what you want to play/try.

There are different modes which allow you to change the speed so you can master a technique. As you progress, Rocksmith adapts to your skill. Once you've mastered notes and chords, you will achieve a level where they aren't displayed, fading off the screen. As you make mistakes, they will fade back in to assist you.

I know kids today will often be self-taught by using gutar tabs. While that works, something like Rocksmith is a more realistic way to learn how to play guitar. Guitar tabs teach you only how to duplicate a song, not to freely play guitar. On the other hand, Rocksmith helps you progress through the steps of actually learning to play guitar.

I found the playing from what is happening on the screen to be a realistic approach. There are a few different modes:

Session Mode: A chance to play freestyle, but stay within the confines of what is on the screen (the right key, etc.). This is a jam session, so to speak.

Virtual Band Mode: Allows you to play and create music, selecting what instruments accompany you, and in what genre, tempo, etc. This is fun, but not something anyone will probably sit and do for hours on end.

Master Mode: more challenging, but also more fun with "Guitarcade" minigames. These are fun to play while improving you bending, sliding and picking skills. My favorite was Return to Castle Chordead, combining guitar practice with a arcade shooter game.

If you must play this like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, you can switch to Score Attack mode, which follows the tried and true formula of different skill levels, and an arrangement for each level.

Rocksmith does track your progress, so it will adjust levels to how it assesses your current skill-set.

There are a few limitations. Remember, the focus is learning how to play guitar, but the game takes you in one direction at a time. So, for example, you cannot switch "on the fly" from rhythm guitar to lead guitar. If you pick one of those, those are the parts you will see and be expected to play. You have to pause and choose the other guitar role. Once you do that, you are now in that role (say, lead) and the role you formerly were playing (rhythm, for example) is the one not displayed. I would have preferred the freedom to jump as you choose.

The song library is pretty good. There is a good mix of music, so the playlist should appear to a rock fan of most ages. I won't list the whole thing here, but to give you an idea, there are 3 songs from the `60's, 7 songs from the `70's, 6 from the `80's, 13 from the `90's, 7 from the first decade of this century, and 24 from 2010 to now. So, clearly someone who listens to today's rock artists may have more they recognize than someone who prefers classic rock of the 70's. The artist range is excellent, from Aerosmith to Kiss to Alice Cooper, The Police to Nirvana, Weezer to System Of A Down, and more current artists, with works from Arctic Monkeys and Alice In Chains. If you are a lover of classic and mainstream rock bands, you may find there is not enough of that and too much Indie music.

Overall, this is an excellent game, and if you want to have fun while becoming a little better at guitar, it is great. Novices will surely like it, if they are truly interested in learning guitar, but even an accomplished guitarist will have some fun. The advanced player probably won't gain anything skill-wise, but will have fun with some of the challenges. I've been using the game for a few weeks. It has kept me entertained enough to learn a little more about playing guitar, while making the chore of a lesson more fun.

I bought these for my son's controllers because they are always dropping them. They have small hands and these really have helped them in dropping them. The colors are bright, and in the package there was 1 green and 1 blue. Of course they both went for the bright lime green one. It covers perfectly, no issues moving the joy sticks or accessing the battery pack. They were easy to put on and take off. These make finding a misplaced controller easy to find thanks to the bright color. I would buy this product again! You just can't beat the price.

These arrived FAST. and the kids were stoked as soon as i opened the package. Having the two colors is great. One for each child, so now they know which one is theirs. The fit is great and still able to access and operate everything the way it is supposed to. The soft grippy surface allow better grip for small hands and also helps protect it from drops. I would recommend 2in1 combo Silicone Skin BLUE and GREEN game controller protection for anyone looking to add an instant dash of customization and to protect the controllers for more durability.

Let me start by saying that I've followed this series since Dynasty Warriors 3. In my opinion, that was its peak. I've bought every game, and many of the expansions. Upon hearing that battles from previous games would be included, I was hopeful that the good old DW3 maps would be a focal point. They were not. There are a couple maps from each installment from DW3 to DW6. There is really only one mode with significant replay value, and that's legend mode, which features a nice collection of battles to be unlocked and played with any character you want. You return to your castle town after each battle. The town features a strategist from which you can purchase increased attack, defense, points, speed, or power for the character you have selected. You also can purchase weapons from the weapon-smith, and choose which of about 10 places to send a merchant who brings back gold, weapons, or guardian animals. You also appoint an adjutant to watch over the castle town, but he really doesn't matter. The battles feel no different from DW7, but they are quite enjoyable. You can play with friends now, which is nice. I'm glad Koei remembered that some people still have friends. The new characters are fun to play with and I love the new weapons. I've nearly beat the game, and I can't help but feel rather unsatisfied. The game feels kind of empty. I realized this was because of the lack of cutscenes and no progressive story for each character. Before each battle, the story is read to you as the stage loads, but this hardly takes the place of the epic, mood-setting movies and unique stages of the older installments. Some of the battles are rather cheesy. For example, on one of the last battles, you follow Liu Shan around as he says stupid things and looks for childhood toys and friends. There are a few cutscenes, but they are rare and not all that exciting. One thing that really disappointed me is that you can't choose the BGM for the battles. Basically, this is a collection of new battles and a good way to level up characters. If you liked DW7, you should enjoy this, but there is little that is really "legendary" or "extreme" about DW7 Xtreme Legends.

I have been a long time fan of this series. So, when a new one came out, of course I bought it. While there are some nice new features (described in the description), and three new characters, I found Legend Mode to be where I am spending most of my time. The new weapons, as always are neat, and the OMG THIS IS INSANE mode is exactly what it promises. However, Legend Mode lets you pick a character and bring a dead town back to life. There are plenty of new scenes for this Mode, new stages (or just ones from old games and revamped ones), and a new ability....buy ups in your life/attack/defense/etc. The most annoying areas were the still disappearing characters (the enemy gets too far away and vanishes) and having to change disks between XL and 7 to play Legend Mode. This is a great addition to the series with a great deal of replay value.

its an awesome expansion to the dynasty warriors 7 game but i wish it had more modes. i highly recommend getting the original dynasty warriors 7 for the games full story because this game is kind of short in terms of game play

Honest reviews on Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends - Playstation 3

The title says it all. The amount you enjoy this game will depend on which systems you enjoyed the most. I started with Dynasty Warriors 3 so it's hard to say that I really loved this game because you can't create your own officers and I miss the body guard system. Regardless, good game and if like me you will play every game in this genre regardless of quality then I recommend it.

It's been since the 4th game since I've been into the series, mainly because I had heard it was falling away from what makes it fun, but decided to give this one a chance, and I am not disappointed. It's a the series upgrade I've been waiting for since the PS2 for the PS3.

When we first got the Kinect, we purchased the Kinectimals game. Although it was cute and my 4 year old daughter liked it, the game required reading so I always had to sit beside her while she played. This is fine, but I have 11 month old twins, so my 4 year old ended up not getting a lot of Kinect playtime.

Also the kinect didn't respond that great with Kinectimals. My daughter was often frustrated.

A few days ago we bought Fantastic Pets. It requires almost no reading (only a few parts do, but my daughter now remembers which items to select in those areas so she doesn't need me at all) and seems to be a whole lot less frustrating to her.

Go with Fantastic Pets...much better!

Pros: My kids (6 & 4) love this game. The ability to customize their pets is great. They can unlock new features for their pets the more they play it. They can pick multiple pets too. After the initial tutorial, they can jump right in and play from where they left off.

Cons: Long initial tutorial and pet set-up. Both kids can't play at the same time with both of their pets. Two people can play at the same time, but only with one pet.

We've had this game for a while now. Wanted to wait and see if my 6yo really liked this game. Got to say this is a great game even if you put down. We've got Kinictamals and Fantastic Pets. He wanted to pick Kinictamals back up but forgot most of the commands after not playing 3-4 weeks. As we all do when we try to replay a game after a break. We put fantastic pets back in 2-3 weeks of not playing and very intuitive. He was having fun in no time.

Will say that after we added better lighting to our room some boards(obsticle courses) seemed to register our moves better. As it did with all our kinict games. It's geared towards kids cause you can only unlock(buy on the map) so much a day then is closed for the day. Competitons are once a day then locked. Uggg! Not a big free play player but son is.

He's got one of each pet and loves giving them different looks, wings, eyes... etc. Creative side and different animals really adds to the replayability for kids.

Because of the boards/screens intuitive nature it keeps my son wanting to play more and not get frustrated to replay later after he's taken a break. Where Kinictamals he's done with since it's a relearn game everytime you play and already unlocked the island and last kitty. He can replay but has no desire.

I love this game we bought it for my two year old and he loves playing with his pets. We thought that it was going to be hard especially since our two year is very hypper but he got the hang of it right away he loves the fact that his pet is next to him and he can touch him and make him do tricks. We really recommend this product to all the parents because it interacts with your kids in such a way and it teaches them to follow directions unlike when our son is watching "Go Diego Go" that it tells him to pull, push, or run and he's doing it but he has to wait till the show gives them a few minutes before actually doing it. With this game as he's doing it you can see how he holds the ball or makes his pet jump or pull. We love it. Joel

Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition - PC/Mac Review

Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition - PC/Mac
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

First, I want to tell you that these games (all of them) are absolutely WinXP compatible. I've run them all on three different XP computers including two laptops and none of them had any trouble. However you MUST set them to the proper compatibility mode before trying to run them. Get instructions from the ubisoft website or windows help for compatibility mode, it's not difficult. (be sure you set compatibility for the main program file, not just a shortcut)

Second, these aren't action games they are puzzles and very difficult ones, if you get bored easily you won't like them. Very few people will win one of them in just one session, even if you have the time and patience to sit at the computer for a very long time. With hints they can be solved rather quickly, but that takes most of the fun out of them. Also they have almost no replay value as the puzzles aren't at all challenging after the first time you solve them.

The scenes are beautiful and strange, but most of the animation is slow and choppy at best, not bad enough to be frustrating but you will definitely notice it. (quicktime version 6.5.2, the most current at time of this review, will run them without problems).

The Myst series is not your run-of-the-mill computer game. It's more like a set of graphic novels in which you have to solve puzzles in order to discover the next piece of the story. You can't change the story or the outcome in any way, you just help it move along.

If you enjoy a mental challenge, and complex storylines without graphic gore or violence and very little action, you might find these games quite enjoyable. Even if you think you don't like computer games you might find that you like these they're very different.

I certainly like them, and I intend to buy Myst IV as well.

Finally, a few tips but no spoilers.

Look at everything carefully, don't get in a hurry.

Check every direction in every scene.

Read everything.

Click on every button, lever, and light.

Look behind every door, from both directions.

Many of the puzzles involve providing power to a device before it will work, sometimes you have to complete an extremly complex series of actions before a device you encountered much earlier in the game will work.

There are a few places where you can actually lose completely if you do the wrong thing so don't forget to save, and then try everything, sometimes what seems wrong is actually right. Sounds are important too.

Breaking things isn't always bad.

Sometimes puzzles seem complete when they're not (did you miss a final button, switch or lever?)

And lastly Be patient, take a break and let it rest for a while if you're stuck.

I purchased this product thinking that I could run the entire 3 CD set on my Mac OS 10 operating system. Unfortunately I had to buy it to find out that only Myst III (Exile) works w/OS 10. The other two CDs (Myst I Masterpiece Edition & Myst II Riven), will only work w/OS 9. I don't have OS 9 on my computer and it's no longer available.

The description section for Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition is definitely lacking crucial information. It needs to say that it will work with Mac, but only if you have OS 9 AND OS 10 installed on your computer. This way no one else will waste their money.

Best Deals for Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition - PC/Mac

If you are like me -if you are someone who really does not get into computer games much because they rarely engage you beyond the first couple of hours -Myst is a very pleasant surprise. Like many people, I am disgusted by the grotesque or mind-numbing nature of most of the games you see for computers and in arcades. Myst is a game that I think is attractive to readers and gamers who like more contemplative entertainment, and (this is just a guess) it probably attracts those of us who enjoy playing games like chess or Scrabble on a computer. This game takes more patience, it requires you to really use your reasoning abilities, even to get out a pad and pencil to sketch courses of action. It is not about instant gratification (blowing away your enemy) but rather, it is about entering a sort of fantasy world and trying to figure out why things look and act the way they do, then acting on your hypotheses. Each time you do uncover one of the answers (and I don't want to give any of them away here) you are rewarded by gaining access to a whole new realm of mysteries that is more complex than the previous one. Along the way, the music and the images border on the edge of mystery, and sometimes even horror. But it is an implied horror, something you sense rather than something thrown at you, and the game never crosses the line into tastelessness. It's one of the very few games I have ever tried where, hours after I shut down the computer, I got an insight into how to go about a particular strategy, and then I wanted to get back into it and see if my idea worked. How often do video games cause that reaction in players?

Once you have "won" the game, there is nothing new to experience. However, it will take you a good while to get there. If you compare this to other entertainments, for example, going out to movies, you realize that the hours you'll spend on the game, even if it does have an "ending," are well worth the price. Even after "winning," it is interesting once in a while to go back into the game just to take a look at the images again.

Honest reviews on Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition - PC/Mac

I have windows XP--just so you know.

The first game I played in this three disk set was Exile, for I have played the originals of the first two games before. It ran perfectly, but that might be because I bought a brand new very up-to-date video card to play Uru on. (It didn't work with my old card.)

Having Riven on only one disk is great, but I haven't played the whole game through yet (since I played the original very recently). The only real problem with it was the music was a little choppy. Same with Myst. Since I have bought the soundtracks, however, this isn't too much of a loss--besides, the music was a little choppy and off in the original sometimes anyway.

The following goes for all three:

Graphics: Five Stars! They are excellent and detailed. You can see yourself in these beautiful worlds, and completely get lost in them. They are very fun to explore just for hours at a time, so traveling back and forth from place to place rarely, if ever, gets tedious. It is also a wonderful addition, in Exile, to be able to look around you almost 360 degrees--though it moves really fast and sometimes gave me a headache when I played in the dark.

The animations were excellent, and looked like real people/creatures (probably because they used real people), but sometimes in Myst/Riven it was tiresome to have to watch an animation all the way through before you could move again--especially if you had seen it before. In Exile, most of the time you can move around while animations are playing, which is great.

Gameplay: FIVE STARS! Though it is hard to get used to the scrolling in Exile, it is always simple to move around and interact with things etc. etc. All the puzzles fit into the game, the plots have no holes, the acting is great (for computer games) and it is always very absorbing (for lack of a better word). When you finish a game sometimes you open it up again to see if there can be another ending, or simply to look at the beautiful scenery again.

Music: Four and a half stars; and that only because it can be choppy and grainy in the first two games sometimes. Otherwise, it supplements the game perfectly and gets better from sequel to sequel. The introductory music of Exile gives me chills, sometimes, for it is hauntingly beautiful.

If you are not patient, or not willing to spend a lot of time solving puzzles, this game is not for you. If you really want to play, however, but find the puzzles impossible, there are strategy guides available and plenty of online help. (I myself used the internet at least twice per game, and let me tell you--it is way less satisfying than solving it yourself).

If you love shoot-em-up and other sorts of fast moving games, this game will never be for you.

But, if you have a big imagination, plenty of patience, a grasp of logic, and a love of mystery, you'll get right into these games. You can practically feel the wind on your face and smell the salt from the sea when you're standing there staring at it all--and you'll wish it'll never end.

First, reviews of the actual gameplay can be found elsewhere. My major point here is to share how one could likely get this to work on Windows Vista. This works, in the least, for Myst Masterpiece and the 5-CD Riven (which I had earlier), so I would think it very likely it'd work for the DVD Riven and probably also for Myst Exile (if Myst Exile didn't work already). I got this info from a Google search

There're 3 things you need to do/know to get the game working:

1) Set the correct compatibility mode for the shortcut to each game. This is Windows 95 for Myst and, I think, for Riven as well. I also gave the program administrative privileges in case there were issues with saving files; I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

2) Copy the System32 Quicktime files that "come with" each game into the Program Files directory for the respective game. Of course, it's probably a bad idea to have multiple versions of Quicktime installed (if it's even possible), so this gets around the issue that the different games appear to use different (and, more importantly, now outdated) versions of Quicktime. Here's what I did for Myst:

uninstall the current version of Quicktime (happened to be the latest Quicktime Alternative for me, which didn't seem to work with Myst)

install the version of Quicktime that comes on the Myst DVD

go to the C:\Windows\System32 directory

find the Quicktime files just installed; I found 3 (they should have an old "modified" date, I think 2003 if I remember correctly; to figure out precisely which files are relevant, cross reference the dates of the files in the System32 folder with the dates of the files in the Program Files\Quicktime folder)

copy these Quicktime files from the System32 folder to the Myst program files folder (it's possible not all of these are necessary, but more doesn't seem to hurt)

uninstall this version of Quicktime and, if necessary, delete the System32 files if they weren't cleaned up

Myst worked for me afterwards. I used a similar procedure for the 5-CD Riven; I'm thinking it likely that the DVD Riven will be fixed that way as well. Additionally, for Riven, I read somewhere to set "fEnableAudioProxy=true" on the appropriate line within Mohawk.w32 (a text file found in the Riven program files folder). Not sure if this is necessary, but I read somewhere to try that first, before installing and copying Quicktime, so I did; it didn't work, and I just left it.

3) I had trouble saving games initially since there was no line editor to enter the desired file name in the "Save As..." dialog box, so I created dummy (empty) files with the correct extension (*.mys for Myst; *.riv for Riven) in the program files folder to overwrite with the saved game. Annoying, but easy to work around.

So all in all, it takes maybe 5 10 minutes to get all this done for each game, which isn't very much time. If you're not very "computer literate", your best bet is to get a friend to help you. The trickiest part is finding the installed Quicktime files in the System32 folder, which I did based on the modified date (I just found a group of files with the an "old" modified date that matched at least one of the files in the Program Files\Quicktime folder).

Since getting Myst and Riven to work, I haven't had any issues with the game freezing or anything. My biggest "functional" complaint, though, is that it completely taxes one of my cores at 100% ALL THE TIME. Do Myst and Riven really not know how to just sit pretty and display a still image while I decide what to do next?! This has a tendency to make my laptop super hot, which has a tendency to make my laptop super slow, so once in a while I have to take a break to let it cool down. If your computer has heating/cooling issues, beware.

Also, to reiterate some hints from another post:

Read everything.

Check every direction at every location.

Pay attention to sounds, they are often subtly important.

Look behind every door (both sides).

Good luck!

Jeff

This is one of the very few RPG's I've played more than three times. (The other notable mention is Final Fantasy VI.) If you take Pokemon, strip out 90% of the childish nonsense, give it beautiful music, dreamlike landscapes, a plot, character development, and interresting monsters that can take on a multitude of forms, you get Jade Coccoon.

Jade Coccoon has a dreamlike fairy-tale quality that I enjoy. There is character development and an actual plot. The sound track is beautiful; I wish I could find it. The character Po tells some good stories (the first about Alcana is the best), which is a nice diversion. My favorite element of the game is that there is no clear "good guy" and "bad guy", there is conflict on both sides. It also touches on some theological questions in an interresting way. The graphics are also quite good for a PlayStation game, and actually add to the mood and setting rather than just act as flashy eye-candy.

My only problem with this game is that it seems slightly rushed in development. There are elements in the story that seem as if they will be developed, and they just "go away". There is also a slight bug: If you save a game while carrying firefly coccoons and turn off the PlayStation, when you re-start, the special abilities and spells of the creatures in the firefly coccoons will be erased. (However, sometimes this works to your advantage for breeding.) Purified coccoons left with Mahbu are safe. The game has also crashed three times on my PS2 (twice when Levant is summoning the first Minion of a fight), but for 50+ hours of play, that isn't bad.

Yes you do fight with monsters and yes you are a kid. But this game has a rich storyline with many character relationships. Different from pokemon you can fight yourself. Although the graphics are bit out dated they still look awsome and the anime videos are fantastic. The music works well with the game and the voices of the characters are well placed for those who dont want to read. Overall its a great game and well worth the money.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good game, but I would recomend renting it before you buy it. The game gives it its all, and it really tries hard to be original, but it has its drawbacks.

It IS over too quick. The monsters are sometimes very creative, butt after a while, you begin to realise that the "150 base minions" are just the same, with four different elements (water, wind, earth and fire). The story line is original, but you can see the end coming a million miles away.

You will probably complete it in under twenty hours, but it would take you a long time to catch all 150 minions! If you are looking for something new, give it a try: it is an original game.

PROS:

Wired xbox360 controllers work well with windows7 right away and the driver for XP isn't hard to find.

No need to worry about relinking your controller when you go from xbox to xbox; just plug it in and you are good to go!

No need to charge or replace your batteries before you can play.

Most PC shooters made after the 360 have plug and play support for the 360 controller (in my experience). I've used mine for L4D, L4D2, and portal2 recently and I only needed to plug in the controller before launching the game for it to work.

CONS:

Cords are so 90s.

Since the two triggers aren't actually buttons a lot of older games can't map them as 'fire' buttons. This means that if you do any emulation or DOS gaming you will want to do research before buying this controller for them since you may not be able to use it in the way you hope.

Please note that if you want to use a 360 controller for PC gaming you CAN'T just use a 360 wireless controller and plug in a charge kit USB to your computer. The charge cord only provides power across USB; it doesn't communicate with the computer that way. If you want to use a 360 controller with your PC you need to buy this OR a wireless one that specifically comes with a plug for the computer.

I hope this review is helpful for any potential buyers.

The Xbox 360 controller is one of the greatest controllers ever designed, at least in terms of comfort, aesthetic appeal, sturdiness and whatnot. The only flaw is that the wireless version takes two AA batteries and they only last a few hours. Being wireless is novel for a while, but eventually the constant replacement of dead batteries got on my nerves. I have a serious aversion to 3rd party peripherals and rechargeable batteries in general, so a rechargeable powerpack was not an option for me. I solved the issue by getting a wired controller. It's even more comfortable; it's lighter, and there's no battery pack in the way of my finger tips. I love it, I'll never go back to wireless.

The XBOX 360 wired controller is the best PC game controller out there. Many games available on the PC translate very well to a controller format since it's pretty common to see ports between the various platforms these days. It works just like it would on an XBOX and Windows 7 automatically recognizes and configures the controller for you. No complaints at all. I have two that I use frequently for gaming on the PC.

Loved this controller. I bought it for my PC, and it works awesomely great. I haven't found any better controller for my PC than this one. Considering XBox and Microsoft and Windows brands are the same company, so there wasn't any problem installing the drive for this controller. Just plugged it and 30 seconds-1 minute, boom it's ready to use. I've been using it for some PC games and It's capable with a lot of games. Not all of them, but I guess this is the games' developers problem not the controller. Buttons are nice, big enough. It's been almost 4 months and it still works, which is good of course. Overall, I recommend this controller to any PC gamer out there who just want to have the console experience besides the Keyboard and mouse :)
