I am a recent console gamer to PC gamer convert and was looking for a way to make the wireless Xbox controllers work on PC.

This little gadget does just that. MS only sells the receiver with an additional controller at $60 retail; ew bad deal. There are quite a few knock off receivers on Amazon, so be sure you are buying a legit one. The official one is BLACK with "Microsoft" on top with the sync button in the middle with 3 curved lines next to it like next to the controller sync button as well as "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows" written on the bottom.

For $18.95, it's cheaper than buying a wired controller and lets you use up to 4 controllers at once for multiplayer. I use this to play Skyrim and Borderlands 2 via Steam's Big Picture mode, among other titles with controller support.

***Make sure you install the driver from the included disc BEFORE connecting the adapter!*** Microsoft also has the driver to download from their site. The included driver on the disc works just fine.

Note: the seller I ordered from was STEALTH GAMER. Beware if it comes from a different seller. Don't be afraid to send sellers an email to confirm if the product is a legit MS product. The knock offs will not work properly.

Allowed me to use my wireless Xbox 360 controller with my Windows 8 laptop seamlessly. No button mapping was required, and everything functions completely including the rumble feature. I couldn't be more impressed!

Bought the authentic Microsoft version thinking it would work even though the reviews were inconsistent. Read some reviews where it did not work in the system's USB port but did work in a separate add on card. It did not work on my system USB so I bought the add on card and it still would not recognize the controller. I have windows 7 64 bit as my operating system. Software loads fine just never recognizes the controller.

I can't vouch for the authenticity of this product as being an official Microsoft Product. Not because it isn't, simply put I don't know. What I do know, though, is that when I plugged this in, it worked perfectly right out of the box without the need for a driver. I hooked up and was playing video games with my wireless xbox 360 controller in minutes. Is it worth the couple extra dollars for this product versus the fakes on ebay? Yes I think it is.

Bricked system right out of the box. Sony support line hold time more than two hours with no answer.

Called amazon the next morning and they Immediately were very apologetic. I was given one of two option, if I didn't want to wait on another system and wanted to go out on my own the find one, they would give me a full refund immediately. Or, if I wanted to keep my purchase with Amazon, they would send me one before the end of next week that Sony was guaranteeing not be a bad batch. Amazon is sending me the next system before I even return the bricked one. Today is Saturday. They said my system could arrive here as soon as Tuesday or as late as Friday. Either way local stores are sold out, and Sony was telling people 2-3 weeks for repairs. Amazon provided great customer service, as well as a quicker solution than expected!

I have been able to take a look at my best friends system and play with it for a while. It runs great it's extremely fast and blows the PlayStation 3 away in all aspects. So if you get a good system. It's excellent!

I was concerned after reading comments about people getting PS4s that wouldn't display video or just had a blue blinking light, but it turns out that I had no reason to be. My PS4 works perfectly, as it should. PSN has gone down occasionally since it launched on the 15th, but that's to be expected for a new console launch when everyone is trying to play at once. Though it hasn't gone down since the 16th for me, so I don't think it's much of an issue as of this post.

Build quality of the PS4 is top notch, it looks solid and there's no loose parts. Even the HDMI port clicks in when you plug it in. It took me a good few minutes to find where the eject button was on the PS4--it's really small and the dark background makes it difficult to see--but I did end up finding it after watching a youtube video showed that it was to the left of the power button (assuming you set your PS4 up vertically, if you have it horizontally, then it's located beneath the power button). I actually had to strain my eyes to see it--it's really small.

Coming from an XBOX 360, the Dual Shock 4 controller is very comfortable to use--I actually like it better than the XBOX360 controller, which is larger. I really like the touchpad and how it's used in Killzone: Shadowfall to control the OWL.

I'd like to see the touchpad integrated into the OS more. I think it would be quicker to navigate the OS using the trackpad rather than the joystick. The controller has a built-in speaker that games use, which surprised me, since I didn't know or remember until it started working while I was playing Killzone, I thought that the effect was neat. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack to plug in headphones. Mic support is hit or miss, I tried my iPhone earpods and I have no idea if they worked or not because no one else was talking on BF4.

WIFI on the PS4 works fine, but it's not dual band. It only supports the 2.4Ghz spectrum. Still, it has wireless N, so you're unlikely to reach the max download speed of it unless you have a Gigabit fiber connection or a similar connection that allows you to download more than 150Mbit/second. Still, I would have preferred dual-band since the 2.4Ghz spectrum is always congested if you live in a half-way populated area. That being said, I haven't had any issues with the wireless on my PS4. It's been rock solid.

The Playstation App is ok. Just ok. It's nice to to check friend invites and such, but it's very limited on iOS. The second screen functionality disconnects if your screen is locked after a certain period of time and you then have to connect again. The keyboard doesn't always work in the OS. It also doesn't work at all inside third-party apps like Netflix and Amazon VOD. This is something that Sony should fix over time.

As far as BF4 goes, the game is what you expect from BF4. Big maps, pretty graphics, and the first few days are full of crashes. The bugs will be ironed out as it was in BF3, you just have to put up with it for a week or two. I'm dissapointed that I haven't been able to play any of the conquest maps, since those are the only game types that allow the full 64 players, but that'll be fixed, hopefully, very soon.

I didn't have any issues with amazon's packaging--it came with plenty of plastic air-bags to prevent the PS4 box from moving around too much.

In short, if you want a PS4 and you like the exclusives, then go ahead and buy one. I enjoy mines and would recommend it to anyone else.

Always been a PlayStation fan. Bought extra controller, camera, 3 games, you name it. Got my PS4 today, and all I got was the blinking blue light, and no video output. System wont go in safe mode, and tried calling Sony.....1 hour 47 minutes on hold and just gave up.

Please, just please....wait and don't buy this rushed console. Let Sony workout the bugs.

Since I wanted Titanfall and Forza 5, I ordered Xbox One, so hopefully I'll have something to play this month, and HOPEFULLY no issues happen on the Microsoft side. I basically wanted to enjoy exclusives from both consoles.

I returned my PS4 today to Amazon, and will re-order when they update the model.

Not trolling as you can see my purchase is verified. Im a gamer, I don't take sides to bash on the other. If Xbox launches a bad system full of bugs next week, you can bet I'll review it bad as well.

We are spending a lot of money on these consoles and I expect quality from it. Lets come together like brothers and enjoy the games and console of our choices.

If they make bad units, speak with your wallets and return them.

Edit: I did check the HDMI ports, which are perfect. I tried the suggestion of removing the HDD and booting without it....nothing.

I tried doing the boot sequence "press power for 7+ seconds until second beep"....nothing.

I tried it all. What happy 5 star reviewers don't seem to grasp is that some consoles don't work AT ALL. No matter what steps you try troubleshooting this, it simply wont work. It needs to be repaired.....PERIOD.

Btw, anyone that down votes "verified purchase" 1 star comments, its either a troll, or an ignorant person that doesn't want to hear the truth about your beloved console. Just because its not happening to you, doesn't mean we "verified purchase 1 star reviewers" are lying. I wanted to enjoy my PS4 as much as the next guy.

Honest reviews on PlayStation 4 Battlefield 4 Launch Day Bundle

Hey guys, after hearing all of the bad hype I got really worried, and after USPS tracking system showed my PS4 as not having any movement for 7 days I was even more worried, so I called everybody and fussed out USPS just to find my PS4 was here the next day. Its been working for hours and I'm going to let it run all night just to make sure its fully capable. So after all of the complaints I made I got my PS4 on time; actually 10 days before the estimated delivery date. Its working great, and its a seamless transition from PS3 to PS4. Expect some growing pains because I'm still throwing grenades on accident, but all my expectations were fulfilled and I'm writing this for any other people who haven't got their PS4s yet. The PS4 failure rate is not 50 percent every article I have read says its the lowest ever. I had no problems with the HDMI port, nor the GPU so far. I will update in a week or sooner if the system should fail. But being totally honest; you don't have to worry. After the reviews I read I fully expected not to receive the system and if I did receive it that it wouldn't work. I pre ordered in July and its here and working great. I'm US Army stationed in Germany and received it via USPS. It was VERY well packaged, I pulled out about 5 feet of bubble wrap. Worry not.

The system is awesome, BF4 is amazing thus far despite the server issues. The bitter part is that Sony didn't include the ps plus card that were supposed to be included in this bundle and paid for. I feel inclined to give it a 3star but I won't be spiteful but they better sort my s*** out.

If you live in a small space, this is perfect for getting your Kinect up high and a little farther away. My TV is not wall mounted and is about a foot an a half in front of the wall. With this Kinect wall mount, I gain that additional foot an half and by putting it 6 feet up, I gain about another foot. Now I'm able to play 2 player games in my small living room.

You will need to drill 4 small holes in your wall so be prepared to do that. It's very simple to install and as long as you have a drill you are set.

The mount is excellent for small spaces. By mounting the kinect above your TV, this adds about another foot to your living rooms space. If you play kinect in a small space and often have trouble with the kinect recognizing you, then this is a must. I had issues with the kinect telling me I was too close when the kinect was below my TV; however, with this mount those issues have seem to have gone away. The mount allow for the Kinect to tilt down or up and move freely in any way.

Even if you don't have a small room, I would recommend this just to have your Kinect out of the way. It reduces the clutter around your TV and allows you to easily hide the Kinect wires behind your TV if mounted correctly. Set up if simple with a few screws that are hidden by the mount.

Kinect Sensor with Kinect Adventures!

Item is made from metal and plastic.

1st: Attach metal bracket to wall with provided drywall anchors and screws (4 of each). (suggest using a level)

2nd: Slide plastic frame over metal bracket. (friction fit, does not lock in place)

3rd: Clip Kinect Sensor onto plastic mounting clip. (locks in place)

4th: Slide plastic mounting clip onto plastic frame. (locks into place)

Item is solid and sturdy if attached to the wall as per instructions.

Actual bracket size is 2-1/8" high x 3-1/8" wide x 4-13/16" deep (not including Kinect Sensor).

Another interesting note, the sensor clip has a threaded mount on the bottom of it like a camera/camcorder does. This would allow one to use just the mount in other applications.

Kinect Sensor can be easily attached and/or removed if you wanted to take it to another room of the house.

Honest reviews on Xbox 360 Kinect Wall Mount

I noticed one of the bad reviews and to be honest i don't think he re-calibrated the sensor after moving it which is why i think he had issues with this product.

When you move your sensor you are supposed to re-calibrate it, if you notice most games you buy come with a calibration card with smiley face on it.

My original location was 2ft off the floor below my TV. After I mounted it above my 50" TV. It's now at a height about 5ft 6-7.

When i first turned on my game i notice my arms where going above the box where it shows my infra red image.

I went into the Kinect options from the XBox Dashboard and did re-calibrate.

It gave me the option to move the motor up and down to fit my entire body in. After re-calibration my entire body fits in even when my arms are fully stretched.

My games work exactly how they did before no changes.

The mount is well made/solid and comes with screws and plugs for mounting.

The bad review is mostly for the ridiculous $50-60 price! I did not pay this price because amazon had it listed for $14.99 before and that's what I paid. I couldn't get it from amazon since I missed the preorder, however you can purchase this at some gamestops for the same $14.99 price. Like the other reviewer, my space barely had enough room for the 2 ppl region for kinect adventures. However, by using this wall mount, I was able to place the kinect around an extra foot further back and now I have plenty of space for the kinect to register two ppl. I'm not a handygirl, but it was simple enough to measure placing the mount right in the middle of my tv and drilling some holes. I love it!

I won't go into how the game performs online, in single player, etc. Others have done a fine job of that already. What I know many people want to know is if the Gold Edition is worth buying over the standard edition or not. Well, I'll try to help you decide that for yourself, but in short (and in my opinion No).

Simply put, all you get are some videos of the multiplayer maps with some tips on how to approach each map. I had hoped for more from these videos, honestly, and I don't really think they offer much insight at all. They seem rushed more than detailed. More than likely, these will be available online somewhere if they aren't already.

You also get immediate access to five additional guns that buyers of the standard edition will need to wait until they've reached rank 25. That's cool, I guess, but not really that great of an incentive.

You also get a small fold out poster...

If you're a collector of special editions, then great go for it. If you really don't care that much or are swaying between the two, get the regular one this one really isn't worth the extra cash. In my case, the store I purchased the game from actually had the standard edition on sale while the GE was regular price. So I ended up paying eighteen dollars extra for these five guns, poster, and videos. In my mind, that was a poor choice. For the usual ten dollars more, I'd have been less disappointed, but still not totally satisfied.

Explanation of my star ratings: I have this edition of the game 3 stars simply because I feel the additional content wasn't worth the additional price. I gave the game itself 4 stars overall because, while I'm enjoying it a lot, it doesn't keep me as immersed as Call of Duty 4 did.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

To me, there are a lot of factors considered when figuring out the difference between a good game and a great game. Especially when the average price of a game hovers around $60-$70, I want the most play out of my games. Sure, I like graphics and dialog as much as the next guy, but there are intangibles that take a game from everything else out there up to the next level. For me, Bad Company did everything it takes to make a game an instant classic.

First off are the graphics. This game is visually stunning. There's no hokey fake imagery masquerading as a serious backdrop. Everything is lifelike 3D with realistic effects like sun shining through windows and trees swaying in the wind. It's like you're there and living the situation. The game makers took obvious care in this and it really shows.

Secondly, the gameplay itself. There's no fancy controls. Change weapon, reload, fire, special weapons, all easily accessible and not confusing at all. Within five minutes I had the control scheme down and was enjoying myself immensely. Guns fire with recoil like you'd expect in reality and bullets behave the same. You can control remote artillery also, man the gun turrets in a tank, and call in remote air-strikes. The sheer variety of weaponry in this game is amazing in itself, but then you add in the effects of the guns you're using and you have where the game takes itself from fun to classic.

The intangibles are what defines a game to me. The very first time you shoot a rocket at the wall of a house just to watch it disappear you'll be hooked. There's nothing like seeing that chunk of concrete and drywall go flying to bring out the kid in a person. Also, running into a building full-speed in an armored vehicle brings out emotion in me that just cannot be described. It's sheer joy and amazement. This is the most fun I've had playing a game in a very long time. But the fun doesn't end there.

For the purists, you can use the building destroying system to your advantage. There's a technical aspect to the destruction you can use to your advantage also. Blow a chunk out of a building to create a sniping spot to pick off the enemy. Knock out a wall to expose an enemy on a gun turret. Don't feel like running around to a door? Make one. Although you can't destroy everything (building support beams stay in place to avoid a flat battleground), you can destroy damn near everything. And it's all fun to watch explode.

And yet even though catering to anyone who likes the first person war shooter, the game never takes itself as seriously as a game like Call of Duty 4. I'm thankful for this, because it adds a certain comic element that runs with the theme of the game (Enjoy the explosions, don't take yourself too seriously and just have fun!). In this, some game purists might be driven away. For instance, you can never really lose in this game. If you die, your character is respawned close to your dying point. All the bad guys are still dead, but you regain full health and ammo. In one way it puts you back into the action all the sooner, in another it really cheapens the value of a life. The very worst that can happen in this game is failing a "protect the tank(s)" mission and you have to wait through a short load to try again.

That's really the only reason why I gave this a final of four stars instead of five. The "cheapening" of gameplay might drive away someone looking for a serious shooter. Me? I'm happy just to watch a building disintegrate due to all the awesome artillery at my fingertips. Also, the re-playability is huge, mostly because nothing is ever the same twice. There are hundreds of ways to approach each mission and the enemy never reacts the same way twice. I bought the Gold edition and haven't regretted it once.

This could be the COD4 run for your money game. I enjoy this a little better that COD4 due to the fact you have vehicles. The gameplay is smooth and graphics are top notch!! Dont get me wrong COD4 is a great game and it gets a 9.75 out of ten from me. Bad company gets a 10. GREAT JOB EA!!! You will not be dissapointed if you get his game!

Honest reviews on Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition -Xbox 360

I am not a big fan of the FPS genre. I play them from time to time, but they always seem WAY too complicated to me, and they usually are not easy to sit down and then pick back up a month later. I hate complex systems where I have to remember all these special combos in order to play the game. That is NOT this game.

You can pickup this game in a few minutes. The controls and simple and well organized (unlike the controls in Army of TWO or RB6).

The graphics are amazing. Yes, there are glitches and places that you can't destroy everything. But the ability to blow a wall out of a building to get at the enemy behind it awesome and very satisfying.

The single player game is a movie cut scene driven system. It is well written for an FPS and keeps the player moving into the game very well. You unlock new weapons in the game by finding them on dead enemies for the most part.

The online gameplay is amazing. You start with a few weapons and unlock more through gameplay. Your character has some RP elements to it by being able to spend your unlock points on things you like to do. You can unlock sniper rifles if that is all you like to do for example rather than getting a new assault weapon.

Playing online has been a lot of fun for me. I don't normally like FPS online play (too many kids with foul mouths yelling all the time). But this has been a lot of fun to play and level your character. You gain ranks and medals through online play.

VEHICLES!

You can also drive and shoot a lot of vehicles. In particular I love the ability to jump on a tank someone else is driving and be their gunner. If they jump out you can then take over and drive as well. Helicopters are included as well (hard to fly, but cool).

FUN FUN FUN Squad concept too

I have not had this much fun playing an FPS since the original Unreal series. The maps are huge and leave a lot of room to run around. You fight a series battles on each multiplayer map. You can also choose to spawn with your squad, or to go back to the base. This is a lot of fun when you have a good squad as you can look out for each other while playing. There is a system between matches where you can rate your play with each squad mate and then you are paired up with people you like when they are online. Makes it even more fun when you get to know people online and then play together with them.

Gold edition might not have been worth it, but for me I thought it was nice to get the extra weapons.

Great game, lots of fun things to do, and Gold Rush is a great game type. The only problem I had was the pre-order from Amazon. I pre-ordered the Gold Edition and never got a code for the sniper rifle. I just assumed that I'd get one, but apparently Amazon thinks that the gun is included on the Gold Edition disc when it clearly is NOT. It's a different set of weapons! And good luck explaining that to anyone. I've sent 2 emails and talked to a guy on the phone and it's like I'm getting them to give me a million dollars or something. Just give me the code and we can both move on with our lives! Anyway, the game is top notch, I just won't be doing another pre-order via Amazon.

Skinit is great on flat surfaces (IE X box, lap tops, even a cell phone) Curved surfaces is a no. The fitting of a curved surface is not accurate. I bought this applied to controller and no matter how hard I or my coworker tried, there were bubbles and wrinkles. I threw it away the day it was received.

Buy The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker...It was in development for 3 long years and it basically maxes out Gamecube's hardware capabilities (cel-shading is an extremely difficult effect for processors/graphic engines to handle).

AWARDS + REVIEWS

Zelda: The Wind Waker came out in Japan in December and is considered one of the greatest games of all time there. Famitsu magazine in Japan (the most reliable gaming magazine in the world..and every game is reviewed by 4 different critics) gave Zelda: The Wind Waker a perfect 40/40. Only three other games have ever gotten a score that high (Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, and Soul Calibur). Famitsu says "Any pangs of anxiety you may have with the cartoon-shading look will instantly vanish once you play the game." Two of the reviewers actually said the game was so good that they cried in delight. In fact, Zelda has recieved only one non-perfect review in Japan and that was by Dengeki magazine (it got a 9.5/10) ..and Dengeki scores games so harshly that Zelda: The Wind Waker became the first game in over 3 months to get above an 8/10. In the US, PlanetGamecube imported the Japanese version and gave it a 10/10. Zelda: The Wind Waker also won Best Console Game of E3 (Gamespot and the Official Awards).

THE "NEW" ZELDA

The main difference between this Zelda and past Zelda's is that Miyamoto is no longer designing/directing it, and thus, the new director is giving it a much more epic feel. Everyone who has played the Japanese version has said that it definatly has the deepest story out of any of the Zelda's ever made in fact, it is the first Zelda to have a true emphasis on plotline. Not only this, but this is also the first Zelda to have multiple continents and islands that you can sail to with a ship. The world is so huge that on a quick ship it can take as much as 15 minutes to sail from one location to the other (in Final Fantasy for comparison sailing from one end of the world to the other only takes about 2 minutes).

LENGTH

PlanetGamecube themselves gave the game a 10/10 and said the only problem the game had was that the world was TOO huge. This game will take you 40 hours to complete (if you are very fast and direct) but is filled with well over 100 hours of sidequests and other things to do. In fact, this game is probably packed with more sidequests than any game ever made.

CEL SHADING

Anyone who shys away from this game because of the graphics are definatly missing out. Those graphics are actually more difficult for a console to render and more difficult for developers to make than the great polygonal graphics we are all used to. Not only this, but I, having witnessed the game myself at a Nintendo Cube Club, have noticed that up close this game is beautiful. Do not be fooled by screenshots, they do not do the game justice. The animation in this game is amazing and at the Cube Club (a club containing over 20 gamecube games), Zelda definatly stood out as the one with the most impressive and flawless art design and graphics.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay itself is very similar to Zelda: Ocarina of Time although with many enhancements and improvisations. Plenty of fighting, exploring, and puzzle solving. This time, however, the gimmick is wind rather than time (in Ocarina of times case). Wind is constantly blowing at a specific velocity and direction at any moment in the game. It effects everything from how your boat sails and in what direction to which way Link's cap swings in the air. Many puzzles will also use the wind and there are items to manipulate it.

MUSIC

And then there is the music..the music of the new Zelda definatly makes one of the greatest gaming soundtracks in history. Classical Zelda tunes remade in orchestral glory and plenty of new songs as well. The music is completly orchestrated and if you have a surround sound setup..drools.

IMMERSIVE WORLD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Perhaps the number 1 thing that people who have played the new Zelda comment on is that it is perhaps the most immersive game ever made. Link has about 20 facial expressions which all convey what he is feeling at any given time. All characters in towns have artificial intelligence (they dont just stand there or run around in circles like in most Zelda/RPG's)..rather..they have minds of their owns. If you (Link) walk around town with a sword..some little kids will follow you. If you go into a house and break pots the owner will get angry and chase after you. If you do something silly in front of people, they will laugh at you. And if you draw attention, people will look at you. Even the enemies have AI that makes the world immersive. Take out a bomb in front of a Moblin and they will run away it makes you feel like the world is real. Seagulls follow your boat as it travels betweens islands. Zelda: The Wind Waker is the definative reason to own a Gamecube.

(NOTE: I imported and currently own the Japanese version of the game and have played through it).

Words fail me to describe just how wonderful this game is.

As a continuation of Nintendo's most polished series, you know without even the slightest bit of doubt that they've done the visuals and audio right; the graphics really have to be seen in action to be appreciated. It's like controlling your own little cartoon world. The facial expressions and the way the characters can interact with the environment is superb. The soundtrack is phenomenal as well, with plenty of new music and a return of some classic tunes (including the one we all know from the original Zelda).

Graphics and sound are important, but they alone don't make a game fun; what really sets this game apart from anything else I've ever played is the gameplay. From the intro to the last battle, every moment of Wind Waker shines of quality. The overworld is bigger than you can imagine, and each creatively designed dungeon gets progressively better and more challenging than the last. The camera is very similar to that found in Super Mario Sunshineyou have full control, and it goes where you tell it to go.

Though the game doesn't come out in the US for another 3 months, I guarantee you that it'll be worth the wait. This game is perfectI can't think of a single thing that I would change.

And the fact that I can't read a word of Japanese absolutely blows my mind.

Best Deals for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

In some ways, a classic video game series is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, developers are carrying on a tradition, a legacy. They've earned thousands (dare I say millions?) of devoted fans, and their names will almost assuredly be carved deep into the halls of video game history. Their work will go out into a remarkable number of homes, almost immediately after release. But, by that same token, each individual follow-up title is met with ridiculous scrutiny and astronomical expectations. No longer are these developers and programmers merely entertaining the public, they're toying with electronic mythology. It's all black and white, they're either delivering "the best title since.." or they're raping their own legacy. Rarely will a highly anticipated sequel be met by a lukewarm response from fans of the series, they'll either love it or they'll hate it. And, for the most part, a major change to the status quo is viewed as a bad thing.

So it should come as no surprise that many long time fans of the series were immediately turned off when early screens of Link on the GameCube, digitally rendered in all his glory, were replaced by a childlike, cartoony new appearance. When Miyamoto and the rest of the team trashed those old renders and went in an entirely new direction, fans felt alienated. Betrayed. I should know, I counted myself among them.

Within the first three minutes, my worries were washed aside. Graphically, this is as much of a leap forward from "The Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask" as those revolutionary titles were from "A Link to the Past." It's still filled with the same great gameplay experience you grew to love on the NES, SNES and N64, yet it's pleasantly a beast unto itself. Truly, this was the right step for the masters behind the Zelda series to have taken.

The gameplay is a near-flawless translation of the system broken in by the N64 titles, at the same time benefiting from the modifications made to the GameCube's controller. Where the N64 controller offered four directional "C" buttons (which were used to activate items in your inventory), the GameCube offers a second analog stick, labeled the "C stick", which is used to control the camera angle. Items are now activated through the use of the X, Y and Z buttons, a layout which requires some minor adjustment due to the "Z" button's location, away from the other two. Assaults are performed with the "B" button, and various actions are all done with "A". Players may lock onto enemies with "L", and the "R" buttons gets Link down on his belly and enables him to parry attacks with his shield.

Though the system remains magnificent, there remain two fairly glaring problems with this layout. For one, the player still cannot control if and when Link jumps or climbs. This particular flaw becomes critical when navigating small ledges or attempting to scale relatively short walls, as the little man on the screen will occasionally choose to plummet to his doom without a moment's notice. I've nearly lost my mind, standing in front of a three foot wall that my character simply refused to climb. The second problem I had was with the camera control. In "The Wind Waker," pulling back the camera also lifts it skyward. So, if I want a wider view of my surroundings, I also lose a lot of my range of vision and must maneuver Link from above. Needless to say, this is not ideal.

My largest gripe with this new Zelda lies in its sound. As a next-gen system running custom DVDs, the GameCube has more than enough room to allow for high quality, dolby-style audio tracks. This system should be pumping out better sounding tracks than your average CD, as evidenced by the tight ambient soundtrack of Metroid Prime. Instead, Zelda falls back on the same old MIDI-sounding synth score we endured on the N64. Many of the songs are exactly the same as heard on "Ocarina", with only a few slight tweaks and modifications, which is an undeniable no-no for a title of this magnitude. Imagine if the Ocarina of Time had shipped with the same screeches and dings heard on the NES original.

As far as graphics are concerned... I've seen cel shading done well in the past, but absolutely nothing can hold a torch to what's been accomplished with "The Wind Waker." Everything has been accounted for, from the big picture to the tiny details. Afterthoughts such as the water bursting off the front of your boat and tiny clouds of dust kicking up beneath your feet on a beach are attended to with uncanny attention to detail. When your character climbs from the water, he'll drip dry for the next few minutes. A monstrous enemy resembling a warthog marches through several dungeons on his hind legs. His lower lip juts out, flapping in the wind, and individual bits of saliva sail through the air with his every move. It's incredible. There are more frames of animation in that enemy's lip than in all of the original Zelda. Taking this game in is more than just an experience. It's a revelation.

As one package, this is an unbelievable game. If it weren't for the mild, yet necessary tweaks required of the controls and the sore lack of acceptable music and audio, I might be tempted to call this perfect. As is, the remainder of the game is good enough to account for the inexcusable audio and then some. The storyline is utterly enveloping, while the gameplay is everything you'd expect. The Wind Waker is a tremendous step for the GameCube, reaffirming Nintendo's place in the industry and capturing the imaginations of anyone willing to give it a chance. Don't let your preconceived notions about the shift in visual style fool you, this belongs in your collection right alongside the other titles in the legendary series.

Honest reviews on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

(Import Review-Spoiler Free)

I've been a long time fan of the series; ever since the beginning, when they release the original Zelda on the NES. The Legend of Zelda is one of the most enjoyable game series of all time, and is easily my favorite by Nintendo. A Link to the Past has always been my favorite, with Ocarina of Time coming in second. Wind Waker is better than both of these in my opinion, although not by much because the other two were such amazing games.

Gameplay: 10/10

It takes the exellent gameplay of the N64 games, and makes it almost flawless; the control is tighter and more responsive than ever. Attack is assigned to B, while A does the lock-on jumping sword attack, rolling, and many other uses. Y, X, and Z work exactly the same as the C-Buttons on the N64 controller did, which assigns items to those buttons.

The camera is really good in this game as well; it uses the Manual Camera found in Super Mario Sunshine, which works exellent for those who want full control of the camera(like me), and it has the traditional camera where it follows Link around by itself; it works really well too.

The Dungeons are great! We've seen some awesome work done by Nintendo in the past, but the ones in this game are just flat-out amazing. The puzzles, the level design, it's all just very nicely done. It uses the same formula from past games; find Keys, open Treasure Chests, obtain a new Weapon, and defeat the boss. Speaking of bosses, they are just as creative, and cool as they were in past games. As for the weapons, there's a couple of new ones, and some of the previous are used in new ways. For example the Boomerange has a lock-on device;(lock on upto 5 targets)it locks onto all of them, and hits them in the exact order you locked onto them in. It's much improved. I won't go into this area too much, but the weapons are a lot of fun to use, and never fail to impress. As for the new main item; the Wand. You use this to change the direction of the wind and many other cool things. It works exactly like the Ocarina, it's just that you use a Wand instead. The last thing I will touch on is one of the biggest changes in the game; instead of the normal land, this world is mostly water. You get around by sailing on a boat. The sailing gets a little tedious at some points, but that only lasts for a while because you get a device that makes traveling much quicker pretty early on in the game. The seas are full of nasty enemies, and some awesome weather which changes from thunder-storms, to hot and sunny skies while you sail around. Overall, I prefer land, but the water is definitly a nice change of pace and will not disappoint anyone.

Graphics: 10/10

This game might not impress people who prefer the realistic look, but if you like a good artistic style(like me), then you will be wowed big time through out the game. The weather effects, the boss', the dungeons, the character designs, it's all amazing. It's definitly good to see something different from the normal look.

Sound: 10/10

What do you expect from Nintendo? Every Zelda game they make has top-notch music and it's no different this time around. From happy music, to serious tunes; it's all here, and it never fails to impress.

Overall: 10/10 or 5 stars

This is not only the best game released on the Gamecube, but it is the best Zelda game of all time. It may not have the new feel that Ocarina of Time did, but it improves on the Zelda64 formula big time and will be a non-stop thrill ride for all who buy this game.

Is it the best Zelda franchise ever?

Yes, if you take the challenge size, the variety of actions Link can perform, and of course, the biggest quality made possible by Nintendo Game Cube console.

No, if you look for an original feeling. That original feeling in Zelda series happen in Ocarina of Time, and will be hard to occur again.

I've heard that it uses a cartoon graphic style. Isn't it terrible?

No. In fact, Link expressions are much better now. He is wiser, his look help you solving some puzzles, and i am sure Myamoto's option in graphics matches perfectly with game playability. I think some players will like it at first sight, while others will get used and will like it after some minutes playing.

Is it hard?

Yes, if you think about new tricks avaiable now. New puzzles, new challenges at the sea (sailing a boat, seeking sunked treasure chests, looking for sea chart)

No, if you are used to Zelda Games. The way of solving the puzzles is almost the same as in Ocarina and Majora's. Look carefully to each dungeon, light some fire, use the hook, grab/push some blocks, aim for enemie's eye and you will going far.

How much time I need to finish the game?

If you are a great gamer, 2 weekends are enough to end it, giving attention only to main quest. Solving all side quests may take you 2 or 3 more weekends. (There are a lot of side quests)

Will I get bored quickly with this game?

Every Zelda franchise combine unique RPG challenge with amazing moments of adventure and battle, so, you just get bored with it if your don't like this style. The big variety of scenarios and things to do will put you with a big glass of water and some cookies at the sofa.

Which items can I use?

The same as in last games: sword, bottles, grappling hook, boomerang.

Plus: sail, telescope, wind waker and deku leaf (which make you fly if you drop from high places)

What about the story? What is the core concept of this game?

Long time after last adventure (100 years, the creators say), Link is living at Outset Island, with Aryll, his little sister, and his grandma. After a long-living period of peace, a wind of evil is being spreaded again in the world. A big bird is flying over the islands and capturing girls with long ears. Link's sister, Aryll (check by yourself her ears) is surrounded by that bird, and stay prisioned at Forsaken Fortress, where Ganon (Big Boss in every Zelda) takes place now. When Aryll is caught, some pirates, who were at Outset Island, give a hide and a big help to Link start the adventure. Later he will find a sailing boat, that will help him a lot.

So, I must buy it?

Yes. I would define Wind Waker as the Ocarina of Time at the sea.

With the same fun and challenge of speaking to different people, get lost in dungeons, be frightned at first sight with big bosses, etc. etc. etc.

Plus, you can control the wind with your Wind Waker (it has the same mechanic as the ocarina, playing tunes), you sail a boat, and other great factor: the characters who interact with you are smarter. The dialogue has some sorts of jokes with a bit of irony.

I am truly a Zelda fan, and I think this is still the best way to spend money if you have a Nintendo Game Cube.

I had this game for a couple years now and is still a favorite. Everytime my 8 year old neice comes over, she always wants to play it. You can have from 1-6 people playing at one time and choice from the classic game or the enhanched game (both are fun). Bottom lineit's a great game!

This is a great game with great graphics that is a lot of fun. It is perfect for those times when you just want to play a game that you do not have to concentrate too much. Great game for unwinding after a hard day's work. Kids will like it too.

I liked this game because I like the way the people look, it's really funny. You can play it by yourself with a computer player or with your friends. My favorite part of the game is when you get married and have a baby and the expression of the baby is the same as the mom or the dad!! They all look alike! I've had the game for awhile and still enjoy playing it--if my mom will let me play it everyday, I would!

My husband brought this game home because he was trying to find a Playstation game I would like. (I don't like the shoot-em-up games that he does.) It was cute! The movies are a little cheesy, but they did make us laugh. We played over and over again, just trying to land on new spaces so we could see the movies. The games gives you two ways to play -the traditional way, where you collect Life tiles throughout the game; and an enhanced way, where you play little mini-games for money when you land on certain tiles. Both ways are fun, although the traditional way makes the end a little more interesting -you're not sure who is going to win. A good family game, easy for even the technically-illiterate to understand.

I'm only a few hours in to the game, but my experience is already so sharply different from what I've read online that I'm going to add my two cents a little early. I will address the two big controversies that are fueling a lot of misinformation: the Xbox 360 version's graphics and the linearity of the gameplay, both of which have been grossly exaggerated.

Playstation 3 owners are very disappointed that Square-Enix has given so much support to Microsoft lately, and FFXIII going multiplatform was to many an abomination to God. I get it. Really, I do. This happened about fifteen years ago when Squaresoft shifted support from Nintendo to Sony after giving us Final Fantasy I, II(US), III(US), Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana, all of which I played and loved as they were released. Nintendo was THE Square system back then, just as many feel Playstation is today. But times change. Instead of being grateful that FFXIII is MULTIplatform instead of a Microsoft exclusive, many Sony fans and professional critics have started a smear campaign against the 360 version that has gotten way out of hand.

The Final Fantasy XIII graphics for the Xbox 360 are inferior to the Playstation version. The CGI video is compressed and the in game graphics are of a lower resolution. The framerate and loading times on the Xbox 360 version are better than on the Playstation. HOWEVER, if you are running the game on a reasonable sized television, the graphical difference is NEGLIGIBLE. The game looks absolutely fantastic to me on my modest 36" LCD screen. On all the online HD video comparisons I have seen, I see NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL between the two versions, with the exception of a little more tearing on the character's hair from time to time (I only noticed this after rewinding about six times, squinting, and holding my mouth just..so). So the bottom line with the graphics is: unless you are playing on a very large screen TV and have an obsessive attention to graphical detail, the XBOX 360 and Playstation versions are graphically identical.

Now for something just a little more important: the gameplay. There is a lot of hate for the linearity of the gameplay, so much so that it's already cliche and the game just came out this week. Phrases like "Corridor RPG," "Like a tunnel," and "Mash forward and A, then repeat," are floating around. This is true for the first HOUR, as it was for FF VI and VII as I recall. After that the maps start branching out a bit more, and much later the game world opens up for exploration (as is commonplace in previous final fantasy games). Final Fantasy and Japanese role playing games in general have always been very linear in nature. FFXIII has been streamlined a bit to emphasize the narrative and action, favoring momentum over the illusion of choice. But the extent of this has been greatly exaggerated. After the first hour, the maps are no more linear than any other FF game since VII. They are more or less straight forward with a few little detours and dead ends with extra enemies and chests. It is true that there are no towns (on the first disc anyway), but there is a shop at every save point. It is NOT true that you can not level up or customize your characters. About two hours in you are introduced to the leveling system, to which you invest experience points for skills that build up XIII's version of the job system. The battle system is a lot of fun, and is essentially the old school Active Time Battle system that started with FFIV, but streamlined for a much faster pace. It is true that you only actively control one team member at a time, but it works.

Much has been said about FFXIII as a technological marvel. The graphics and art design are gorgeous. Fully rendered cut scenes take the place of virtually all in-game dialog (no text bubbles!). The game has a level of shine and polish rarely seen in video games, regardless of whether you buy it for the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. But for all this advancement, the game still feels very traditional. Playing it doesn't feel much different from Final Fantasies of old, going back to Super Nintendo days really. I've been a Final Fantasy fan since the first installment back in 1987. I've watched the series grow, triumph, and falter. So far I'm very pleased with Final Fantasy XIII, and am excited to see what happens next.

[SPOILER FREE]

A veteran of Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and Tactics, for the first time, I have finally given up on a Final Fantasy game. Here are the contributing factors:

LINEARITY:

This word has been used so much in reviews that I feel it needs to be re-defined. Are the maps linear? In a general sense, yes, but there are dead ends, forks and roundabouts en route to your destination. You aren't walking down a hamster tube the whole time as some would have you believe.

However! One often FEELS as if they were walking down a hamster tube because this game lacks things that most great RPGs have in common:

Decision-making!

A good RPG should NOT be a novel. A good RPG should be more like a CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN-ADVENTURE-type book. In an RPG, there is no little to no fun in following a story that is completely predetermined.

Variety!

In the ~30 hours I've played this game, not once have I seen any side quests, mini-games or other distractions.

STORY:

To be honest, I found the general story behind FF13 much more interesting than the story of FF12. Despite that, it still falls short of the superb storylines found in games like FF 4, 6, 7, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger and the Lunar series.

MUSIC:

Being honest again, I did think the title music was very good, as was the choir-driven boss music when you fight Barthandelus . . . ~20 hours later! All the music in between was either too soft to hear, some funky jazz stuff that needed to stay in Kansas City, or some weird drum and bass jungle beats.

Nobuo Uematsu is not god. There are other composers who have also cranked out great video game soundtracks: Yasunori Mitsuda, Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata, to name a few.

But what all those great composers possess, is the ability to match the music to that particular moment on the screen.

Simply put, in FF13, most of the music doesn't fit the moment. The battle music is especially pathetic. Real good battle music should really get you in a MOOD to beat some guys around, not lull you to sleep.

CHARACTERS:

There are some good characters in this game. My favorite would be Sazh with the chocobo chick in his head. He's not as funny as Dave Chappelle, but he tries.

On the other end, the most annoying by far is . . . you guessed it! . . . VANILLE! She has just witnessed the Final Fantasy equivalent of 9/11, and here she is grinning and smiling and running around like a ditzy schoolgirl. On top of that, she moans and groans more than most adult entertainment.

But most inexcusable is the exclusion of the most important character:

YOU! THE PLAYER!

Final Fantasy 6 realized that the player was just as much a character in the game as the others were. If you recall, during the ~20 minute ending to Final Fantasy 6, the last character introduced was ". . . YOU!"

You were a character in that game because YOU got to DECIDE whether the raft went left or right, how to split up your teams, which town the airship landed near, which characters you rediscovered, whether Shadow got saved, and so forth.

So although Final Fantasy 13 has some good characters, in the end one ultimately feels detached because the player is not PARTICIPATING along with them.

WORLD MAP:

The lack of a world map was a terrible idea.

At the very least, a world map gives one the ILLUSION OF FREEDOM. You may be forced to walk down a mountain path on a world map, but you may also see villages on the other side of those mountains, seemingly inaccessible and mysterious. It may make you want to play the game more so that you can discover more of the world. In addition, it gets rid of the feeling of tunnel-vision claustrophobia that one gets in this game.

I had a hard time visualizing the world of FF13. Another thing that a world map does, is give the game some cohesion. Instead of just walking into towns, you now know where those towns and dungeons are in relation to each other. If you think about it, just about every major fantasy novel has a map.

I wonder why . . .

COMBAT:

In a nutshell, the combat is basically a dumbed-down version of the combat found in FF12. Instead of programming the actions of all your characters, you merely pick what task they should be doing and they automatically go out and do it.

If only your characters weren't so bloody stupid!

There are bonuses for characters attacking the same target. But guess what? If you have Lightning help out Snow, in the hopes of taking out that monster faster, what does Snow do? He switches over to the monster you just left! You can have 3 characters in your party fighting 3 individual battles.

So much for teamwork . . .

If the leader in the party dies, it is game over. The Medic often seems oblivious to this fact, healing characters that are not a priority, especially when you're at 245 HP and almost dead.

Early on in the game, there were some nice touches to spice things up a bit: You could find enemies that were fighting amongst themselves or change the weather to fight different types of enemies. A nice try at variety, but the developers didn't follow through with it or include it as often as they could have.

SUMMONS:

Not only is it mandatory to fight Eidolons, but once you get them, the reward is very small. Instead of the powerful creatures that laid waste to everything in sight, the Eidolons are now about as dangerous and effective as a Navy Seal with a Super Soaker. The Eidolons are good for healing and that's about it.

TOWNS:

There ARE towns in FF13, like Palumpolum . . . but they're just set-pieces, places where you fight your battles, not buy your gear.

STORES:

I thought the idea of "computerized stores" at the Save Points made sense for the futuristic world of FF13. After all, you are reading this review on Amazon, which is basically the same thing and here it is 2010.

But I was disappointed in how the upgrade system worked. While it is easy to pick out the best weapons and accessories, there is no indication of what materials actually DO and how they will help you meet your upgrading needs. You basically have to do it by trial and error, which is further complicated by the fact that gil is nearly impossible to come by.

POLISH:

The game is definitely polished and has some nice touches. I like the text on the load screens bringing you up to date. I liked the short animation of the character's faces on the Status screen. I liked the "Datalog" encyclopedia. A few other things. But if you take a piece of gravel from your backyard and polish it, is it worth anything? No. Although it looks nice on the outside, deep down it's still a worthless piece of gravel. FF13 may be polished, but polish means nothing when the original material is severely flawed.

GRAPHICS:

There is a reason why I mention graphics last, and that is because in an RPG, graphics are not all that important. Part of the joy of fantasy is using your IMAGINATION. Unfortunately, as graphics have gotten more life-like, less is left to the imagination. Sometimes for the better, but often for the worse.

That being said, the graphics in FF13 are definitely impressive, even on the Xbox 360. Honestly, I don't feel like I'm missing much graphics-wise by not playing it on a PS3.

CONCLUSION:

Is Final Fantasy 13 a terrible game? No. Like I said, it has its good points and it is polished up pretty well, but deep down, there are severe flaws that ultimately made this game unenjoyable for me. It's not much of an ROLE-playing game when the most important character--the player--has little to no input or ROLE at all.

Final Fantasy XIII Doesn't Live Up To Its Legacy

Warning: This will be lengthy, detailed review (Spoiler Free).

Who Am I:

Avid RPG fan that grew up with the Final Fantasy (FF) series, dating back to FF2 (US). I've completed the game in just under 45+ hrs. I have no interest in doing the side quests read below for more info on that.

The Final Fantasy series has been near and dear to my heart for a long time. Very few RPGs can match the universe that this series has built in each establishment. So with each new Final Fantasy installment, criticism will be at an all-time high because the game has the highest of expectations and standards in regards to a RPG. Each FF game should drive the RPG market and show the shortcomings of the other RPGs. Unfortunately, FF13 has taken a huge step back in regards to the series and its attempt to evolve the RPG universe.

Let's get started with the review.

Linearity:

I know this word has been stamped, engraved into FF13 reviews. But most reviews have it correct when they speak of FF13's linearity. The one thing I will expand on is how this affects the entire game overall and not just the gameplay aspect. First, let me go over the level design.

The entire game is mission based. So once you complete a mission, you are done with that area with no return later. You can go back to very few areas during the last mission. Every mission is the same which makes FF13 feel very repetitive. Like others have said, you pretty much go down a tunnel, fight some creatures, fight boss, cut-scene, rinse and repeat. This is where FF13's RPG feel pretty much goes down the drain. There is absolutely no exploration, no world map, no towns, and no mini-games.

Yes the world 'opens' up after Chapter 11. But don't be fooled by reviews which state it is 'open.' It's just a big area with creatures in which you are allowed to do side quests. Side quests are summed up as Get quest, kill monster, get reward, complete mission. While I have no problem with that particular formula, the problem I have is that you can't even do most of the missions because your party is limited on how strong it can get. When you finish the game, you are finally allowed to gain extra levels in order to do the side quests. But what is the point besides achievements/trophies? I use the example of FF3/FF7/FF10 where you are allowed to max out your level, get the best items, then when you feel like it, go beat the game. I read a review where they said it felt like an after-thought, I couldn't agree more.

Due to the linearity of the game, the story and characters suffer tremendously which hurts the game overall and not just the gameplay aspect.

Story, Characters:

This is the bread and butter of the FF series. With each installment, we (fans) expect an epic story with incredible characters that we get emotionally attached to. This is probably where I felt most 'robbed' when playing FF13. The story is the cookie-cutter save the world with little to no twists. While I understand many of the FF series have the same story, FF13 did a poor job of execution of telling it. It's simply too drawn out and gets boring at times. A lot of this has to do with the linearity of the missions. With it being level based and no exploration, you never have a chance to become immersed into the world and get emotionally drawn into what the characters are fighting for.

The six characters all have their unique personalities but you never really get a chance to develop any attachment to them. While the game does attempt to give you background stories for each character, it simply just falls short. This is the first Final Fantasy I have played where there really is no main character. Lightning, whom is on the cover, is probably one of least developed characters in the game. At several points in the game, you would think Vanille is the main character with the amount of story focus on her. I don't know how FF2, FF3, and FF7 did it but they had the formula right when it came down to character development.

Battle System:

The battle system has been revamped from previous installations. The turn-based combat is gone and now battles flow in real-time. This can make battles fun at times because you need quick reaction but also frustrating because you can't take a moment to decide what attack(s) to execute. There is an 'auto-battle' button that essentially plays the battle for you by selecting the best moves to use in any given situation. Also, you now also only control one lead character in battle, and your teammates are controlled by AI scripts. If the lead character dies, then it's game over for the whole party. I found this very annoying because your AI healer (whose commands cannot be customized) will heal another party member with lower health and you'll get hit the by the boss and die. Thankfully you can retry after each battle with no death penalty but it makes it very frustrating when this happens near end of a boss battle which you spend 10-15 minutes on.

Characters have 'roles' during the battles. It is essentially the job-system. For those who are unfamiliar, jobs are essentially broken down to: Medic, Attacker, Spell-Caster, Tank, Debuffer, Buffer. You can shift roles during the battle by executing pre-made 'paradigms.' You will find yourself on many battles switching back and forth from attacker-attacker-attacker to healer-healer-attacker. While the battle system is quick and intense, it is also tedious.

Summons (called Eidolons) for the most part are useless in the game. While they played a crucial part in other FF installments, they essentially are pointless in FF13 battles. There are only six summons (one for each character) and only the lead character can use their summon (typically once) during each battle. If you are expecting summons to do tremendous damage, well you will be disappointed. The only reason to summon is if your health is low and you know the boss is about to kill you, you can summon and your whole party will be at full health (and resurrected) after the summon has executed its attack. The best part of a summon is its animation and the fact you can skip the animation after seeing it once.

Graphics/Music:

This will be short. The game is very beautiful and crisp. The cut-scenes are top-notch. The problem is that you start to notice where all the attention went into and what other areas suffered because of this.

Music also has been a very high spot of the FF series. FF13's music director, Masashi Hamauzu, simply did not do a good job with this installment. Nobuo Uematsu has been the original composer for most of the FF series but this was the first one he wasn't involved in and you can tell the difference. While the music wasn't terrible, it wasn't anything memorable. Also, the most unusual part is that no where in the game is the traditional FF crystal theme music.

Final Thoughts:

Final Fantasy 13 was more of a chore to get through for me. While I did enjoy some moments of the game, mainly near the end, it was very lackluster overall. During no time in the game did I feel like this was a Final Fantasy (except the chocobos). I felt as if the Director was trying to make his own niche and sway from the formula. Well in my opinion it was a failed experiment. RPGs need exploration and deep story telling to be successful. This is why you always see games such as FF3(6) and FF7 on top of the list. There is a reason why those games, to this day, are considered masterpieces. You don't sway from masterpieces, you build off of them. Anyway, I know I left out some things such as equipment and upgrading but honestly I just wanted to focus on the main categories when reviewing a game of this magnitude.

Feel free to leave comments.

Honest reviews on Final Fantasy XIII: Platinum Hits - Xbox 360

NOTE: there are SPOILERS in this review, so bail now if that's not your cup of tea.

Let me start out by saying that I am a Final Fantasy fan, and I have looked forward to this game for quite some time. I went out and bought it, played it, finished it, and was stunned by how disappointed I was.

The best thing I have to talk about are the graphics they are phenomenal, even on the 360. I've seen this played on the PS3, and unless you are exceptionally nitpicky, the graphics are essentially the same. The soundtrack is also OK. Unfortunately, now I have to move on to my gripes, and there are many.

First and foremost, have they mentioned the linearity before? Of course they have, but as it is the most fatal flaw of this game, it bears repeating AGAIN! You are forced down each path just as fast as you can button mash your way through the numerous enemies, your road set before you to the point that you could almost rubber band your controller, press A like crazy, and survive. Unlike most RPG's, XIII doesn't give even the illusion of explorability. There are several factors contributing to the linearity. First, There are no extensive side paths to add mystery, and side quests are nonexistent until late in the game. Even when side quests are finally available, they consist of simply going to kill different monsters, much like the marks of FFXII. Second, there are no towns or cities. Well, OK, there are a couple cities, but not ones in which you get to relax and stop fighting so that you enjoy a mini-game (there are none) or something. Third, You buy things from the save points, eliminating virtually all NPC interaction until much later in the game and any hope of juicy tidbits from the rest of the world. Without towns, this game becomes a rather boring series of battles, one after another, and the only breaks come from the numerous cutscenes. Fourth, there is no world map or ability to travel to previously visited locations. I had no choice about where to go and what to do, and this is something that I should never have to say about ANY game.

I'll talk about the battles next. While battles are occasionally visually entertaining and adopt a fast-paced feel, I still found my eyes drooping with a sleepy boredom on more than one occasion. I have several problems with the combat system in this game. First and foremost, I was only able to control my party leader. Also, until very late in the game, I was rarely even allowed to use more than two characters while fighting. This meant that, 9 times out of 10, my actions during a battle were limited to two simple actions: hitting A to tell my leader to attack, or asking my buddies to shift their "paradigm" to heal or buff the team. There was no strategy involved, and I used items so rarely they may as well not have existed at all. Second, I didn't see a noticeable difference in combat when I improved my character through the chrysarium, which is basically a flashier but dumbed down version of FFX's sphere grid. Battles were uniformly moderately difficult throughout the game, never super easy, never super difficult, and eventually mind-numbingly boring. My third problem arose with the lack of any real rewards. For me, a five star rating and a refill on Tech Points don't count. Although I occasionally obtained items that could be used to "improve" weapons or accessories (there was no armor), I never received money (virtually useless in this game anyway) or useful items for my trouble. Fourth, I couldn't go back to 99% of the areas of this game, so farming and level grinding were impossible. Despite the absence of materialistic satisfaction, of greater loss to me was experience. Don't get me wrong, my characters gained experience from each fight. However, as my level was capped at virtually every stage, most of the time, I really had nothing to do with experience gained and no motivation to go pick any fights. The joy of creating an unstoppable demi-god was squarely squashed. Fifth, for the most part, all the monsters looked the same. For all the graphic beauty of this game, the monsters all looked like different colored versions of monsters conquered in previous chapters! Sixth, I can't forget the aeons/gf/or whatever they're called in this game I actually have forgotten, because I never used them. Summons provided some more brief moments of graphic awe, but I rarely used them due to the fact that they were useless. The leader is the only character enabled to use a summons during a fight anyway, and they didn't stick around long enough to do significant damage anyway.

Next, I feel the need to mention the lack of treasure. For me in the past, I received a great deal of joy in battling to the deepest depths of a dungeon in the most remote part of an obscure corner of the world to find the ultimate treasure. My fun was squashed here due to the facts that there was no really valuable treasure, and what treasure existed was blind-man easy to find. You could buy any weapon or accessory that could be found and upgrade it to it's "ultimate" status, so once again I experienced a lack of motivation to go and look for something better.

Finally, I wanted to mention character development. The cutscenes in this movie (game?) do a passable job of developing the characters, even if characters are developed into FF stereotypes. However, the development of the main character, YOU, is nonexistent. I did not feel like I was ever truly, deeply involved in the development of my characters.

I tried to like this game. I wanted to like this game. I just couldn't like this game. As a stand-alone game, the only plus that FFXIII has going for it are the graphics and, maybe, the story line. As a continuation to an epic series, well, it isn't, it doesn't, it shouldn't.

In summary, it seems like SE has sacrificed everything that makes a good game for good graphics. I have bad news for them graphics alone will not sell games! I, for one, will probably rent the next SE creation instead of buying on opening day. In fact, if the next FF doesn't improve drastically, I will discontinue my support of their products entirely, and I imagine that there are many hardcore fans as well as first-timers that feel the same way.

i can understand why people are upset, but being a long time gamer that never really played any final fantasy i just have to say its a pretty good game. the only real complaint is the game isn't an 'open' world. its just one straight line pretty much, its just really annoying to have to level up your character by going back and forth and fighting the same enemy's over and over again.

I wish I could tell you how well the adapter works.I purchased this product expecting what you see,a 4in1 adaptor for PS3/PS2,Wii, and 360. What I received was a one way adapter only for the Wii. Assuming that it was a simple mistake I informed Bargain Cell and they said they would resend the order. They did, and sent me the wrong adapter AGAIN. It then occurs to me from reading the one other review that the product they're offering isn't even the one they're showing. I can't even be sure that they have a 4-IN-1 AV COMPONENT HDTV CABLE FOR XBOX 360 PS2 PS3 Wii. Hopefully they don't screw up my refund too. With these types of business practices I wouldn't buy from these people unless I absolutely had to.

Raptr is a great application tracking your game time, giving you news about games you own and rewards you for playing games. I used it for quite a while but nowadays I am unable to. The application runs fine on Windows 8 but the problem is when it is running Metro applications like Mail stops working. They are apparently working on the issue at the moment (8/11/2012) so if you are reading this in future you may want to check if it is fixed or not.

I was planning to rate it two stars but the software itself isn't that bad. It tracks your game time, keeps you up to date with your gaming friends across multiple gaming networks, and you can get rewards that can even include free games. There's some great features in this app.

Now to the gripe part. I downloaded the app from the official site a good while ago. It worked fine for months until they decided to update the software. Not only did I not get the option to decide whether or not to manually update, but they pushed out the alpha version by default. There were new features I would have rather not had added in, add that to the fact that two of my PCs were having issues booting up after the update. It may or may not have been related but after uninstalling it from both PCs they booted up better again. I'm currently running Windows 7, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I have tried this, and not really understanding the whole meaning to this app. but hey it was free!!! So, i guess its alright!

Honest reviews on Raptr

I can understand the negative comments on this app, initially it is not totally clear what it does. This application is essentially a game tracking service that works across all platforms and combines your gamer stats into one neat package. It is also a messenger, with chat, friends list, email and all kinds of other mostly useless things. It also happens to have a unique reward system which uses the built in tracker to determine eligibility for various prizes such as free games (a few good ones so far), digital in-game items or beta access to an upcoming game. The reward system is fun but sometimes the rewards seem like ads or promos instead of actual rewards. I did get two free xbox live arcade games and starcraft 2 beta access so with a little patience, good rewards can be earned. In my opinion, most of the value in this program comes from the stats and the tracker. I have always found personal stats interesting; I have been meticulously scrobbling my music since 2008 just to keep a record of my listening experience. You can do something similar with Raptr, using it to compare your stats against other players, friends and community leaders. I was surprised to see how good I am at certain games and how bad at others I had put way too much time into. All in all, it is a fun app that works along side Steam, PSN, XBLA and more to provide you with more information on your gaming habits and history.

Out of all the game tracking websites out there, Raptr is by far the superior one. It has an ability to track almost anything, whether it be automated or you adding hours in yourself. I've been using Raptr for almost three years and plan on continuing to use it. Not only is the client and website great, but the staff is very helpful and always willing to listen to your suggestions and feedback whether they're negative or positive.

Some small details on all Raptr has to offer:

The Client Downloading the Raptr client allows you to let them do the game tracking for you. All you have to do is have the client running while you play a game and bam all your hours and achievements are recorded. On top of that it features as a messenger as well allowing you to communicate with other Raptr members as well as your contacts from other services such as MSN or Xbox live.

The Website The website is where you get to see all your hours and achievements added up. You get to see how you stack up to other players, see your overall hours in a game, your rank in a game, and even see which achievements you are missing or most recently got. There's also a news feature on the website which allows you to browse the latest gaming news by genre, game, console etc. You can even post your own news.

Rewards With the ability to rank up in games simply by playing them and tracking your hours, Raptr introduced a rewards system which basically rewards you for gaming. A reward will come out for something such as discount codes, beta keys, and sometimes even free games, and all you have to do is meet the requirements for said Reward. These requirements are generally to be a certain rank in a list of games related to the reward.

The news and rewards alone are things other game tracking sites don't offer. However even without these bonuses Raptr is still a great site to use, and even the forums are a great way to communicate with other gamers. There's really no reason not to try Raptr out.

DOA is a different kind of fighting game. It's not just about combos and quick reaction times, it's about fighting with strategy and learning to anticipate your opponent's moves.

The core of this game is fantastic. It consists of a seemingly simple system of attacks (punches, kicks, etc), throws, and counters. Counters beat attacks, throws beat counters, and attacks beat throws. It's a rock-paper-scissors affair. However, the gameplay has far more depth to it than that, which results more in "feeling" the game out more than practicing combos and timing over and over again like most fighters.

However, the game's frustration level, in accordance with Team Ninja's style, is at times simply overbearing. Sometimes it seems like the CPU 'cheats' because it can anticipate your moves waaay too well. And the end boss character is one of the most frustrating bosses I've ever fought.

The only thing left to cover is the online play, which is fantastic only if you never get tired of ninjas. Sure, it is true that there is no such thing as a truly balanced fighting game. But Team Ninja is so obviously dipping the favor towards the ninja characters (4 in total), that it's somewhat pointless to bother playing as any other character. You'll see what I mean after you've fought Ryu Hayabusa for the 70th time in a row...

Well I have played this a lot lately, and well what can I say this game is a must-have for your x360 collection.

This game is hard, I mean the normal setting is hard, and learning to play will be a pain if you have never played another DoA game. But that's what really makes the game fun, to be able to say that you can finish history mode or even time attack without losing once to the boss... that's just great.

Overall is a great game and I recommend you get it, there's still plenty people playing on Live and well for the price this is one of the best purchases you can make for you x360.

the DOA series has always been my favorite game series of all time. My brother in law finally got a 360 and I had the game already for when I got mine, so I decided to try it out. All I could say was "wow" Everyone is faster, more complex moveset, better countering system, and amazing graphics. They removed a lot of the landing of moves, for instance, if someone is high in the air, you can still do Ayane's back+punch down+kick and it'll land, which is AWESOME!! If you're a newbie at DOA, you're going to really despise it, as it is a difficult game. The computer is ruthless and will not take a break until you are dead, or it's dead. Before you had a couple seconds to get up, now you don't =) Also, if you're a newbie, go into the settings and don't you dare try to set the computer AI to hard, you'll want to punch your TV really really bad. I've been playing DOA for many years and I can say that Tecmo did an excellent job in the final DOA game.

ps it took me at least 6 tries on my first try to kill Alpha (the boss). she's the kind of fighter that hits you six times, grabs you, then you miraculously get a KO. don't be too quick with her, she'll punish you, be smart. but not too slow either =)

in closing, if you like fighting games, get this. it's difficult, but once you learn it, it's one of the most fun games out there, IMO

Honest reviews on Dead or Alive 4 Platinum Hits

I love a lot of different fighting games, from the 2-d/Street Fighter, Last Blade, Samurai Showdown arcade fighters, to boxing games (Fight Night, Punch Out!, Victorious Boxers), Bushido Blade, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, you name it... I've always given the DoA games a chance because of the incredible visuals and smooth combat, and have had fun with some of the earlier games in the series (despite the simplistic rock, paper, scissors fighting mechanics).

So I thought I was getting a huge bargain when I picked up DOA 4 on the Xbox 360 for the "Greatest Hits" price! Online play, new characters to unlock and master, with a cool array of new fighting styles. "Great," I thought... Until I played my first round of single player against what can only be described as the DEMONIC A.I. opponents! "No big deal," I said to myself, "I'll dial it down to Easy difficulty." Unfortunately, there's no "Easy" setting! "Normal" is the default difficulty and it doesn't get any easier than Normal! Oh great, I have to endure this punishing A.I. to unlock the characters, outfits, and achievements. How bad could it be? Well, after an hour I was sorry I bought this game. The computer fights PERFECTLY. It doesn't miss throws, it counters nearly everything you throw at it, and will generally make you feel like no matter how good you thought you were at the other DOA games, you're going to stink at this game. Playing against human players is another story, but sadly you can't unlock the majority of the extras this game has to offer by playing against human opponents. It's so frustrating trying to get through the story mode, that by the time you actually beat the boss, you might still feel like you wasted your time this game just makes you mad.

A game that's as overly frustrating as this in single player mode isn't really a bargain at any price. I'll be going back to the fun fighting games in my collection Fight Night, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Fighter, thanks. This game will be traded back for something else (or gifted to my nephew who thinks he's so good at every game DOA 4 will give him a strong lesson in humility). I'm still giving it 3 stars overall, for the good graphics and cool cutscenes (some are really strange especially the one about the geisha who's late for her recital/ geisha conference? typical for this series), but the single player A.I. makes this a 1 or a 2 in the fun department. Buy this if you enjoy challenges that many would consider an exercise in frustration.

Fighting games have a sad tradition of horrible singleplayer experiences. Dead or Alive 4 continues this tradition wholeheartedly. It packs its singleplayer experience full of gruelingly difficult and frustrating opponents that can perform the trickiest combos at the drop of a hat. This would be fine on harder difficulty levels, but I'm talking about normal mode. There is no difficulty mode easier than normal, unlike in DOA 3, so if you can't take the heat and you don't want to dedicate your life to the game, don't bother.

The boss of the game, ALPHA-152, is stupidly difficult to beat. Memorizing her moves (as you will have plenty of time to do while she beats you again and again) does help ease the difficulty of the encounter, but it cannot be denied that victory is only possible when she decides to let you win. Fighting games typically work in a rock-paper-scissors sort of way, with the aforementioned items being replaced with attacks-blocking-throws. Well, ALPHA-152's throws (scissors) can bypass most of the attacks (rocks) in the game, and have the ability to do more than half of your life in one hit. To make matters worse, their animations take a long time. You can do nothing but watch helplessly as she pummels you into the electrified floor. And I almost forgotshe can teleport at will, escaping your attacks whenever she desires only to reappear behind you and snatch away your life.

So why play singleplayer at all? Because you have to if you want all the costumes and characters.

But the game isn't all bad. The graphics are beautiful. Most of the characters' animations are equally gorgeous, though some of the newer characters look like they need a bit more polish (La Mariposa's kicks). Most of the stages are nice and are about as ridiculous as you'd expect in any fighting game (dinosaurs?).
