I, like most, have been a huge Madden fan throughout the history of the game but I learned a very valuable lesson early on; NEVER BUY BACK TO BACK YEARS!! NEVER!! I did. And I'm sorry for it.

Madden 10 was pretty good, I thought NCAA 10 was better and after playing the demo for 11 I was hooked. I wanted the updated rosters, I wanted gameflow and I was really getting use to the new running scheme. What I figured out after I bought the game was how much the hype failed. Gameflow is ask Madden without pushing buttons. You can always go in and make custom game plans, which I think is a really cool idea, but this takes forever. You're just as good off using the playbook during game play, at least then you have every play you want without forming habits. No complaints with the running game, I think it's pretty solid. If I had a complaint it would be that it is far to easy. I'm no Madden God but this running game makes me feel like one. Passing is hit and miss. I LOVE receivers staying in bounds for the catch or dragging their feet, but that is IF they catch the ball. So many times I've thrown a ball (from a highly rated QB) to an open, slant route running receiver (also highly rated) just to watch the ball bounce in front of him. How about a one handed catch? How about a dive? Where is my coach "give me more effort!!!" button?? The D pad option is just horid. Whoever in game development had that brain storm of an idea should be beaten. On offense it's barely "ok" and I only say that because you can control the clock. On defense it's almost impossible. Just trying to change out of a play is cutting it close, let alone pushing a d pad to cover a certain receiver, ball snaps before I'm ready every time.

Defense goes a little something like this. Open Madden 10, select all, copy, paste to Madden 11....ad D pad frustration. If a developer is reading this....you're an idiot. We don't pay this much money for cut and paste options, and as soon as EA sports stops buying out NFL rights I will never buy another Madden game again. I love defense and I hate that EA hasn't made defense a priority in years. Superstar is another cut and paste job. That portion of the game could be so much better and I've waited for so long to see it evolve. EA sports, I hate you. Franchise is also cut and paste, also another game option that could be amazing through and through.

Online. First off, I never play online. I can understand why some do, I'm honestly not good enough to play against the big boys. But this doesn't stop EA sports from driving me crazy. Nope, this year you must pay for the privilege of playing online, after already paying for the privilege from x-box. Nicely done EA, I loath you. So even though I do not play online, if I want future roster updates I sure will have to pay for it. But that's not all....want dumb coins to buy fake football cards? Better buy those too. Want to have an edge on your franchise? Better buy those options as well. Games are expensive enough. I love game addons like the next game junkie but c'mon man! No other game on the market does this. Fable 3 isn't going to put out a new game every year, make you pay for all the cool stuff while at the same time pushing out a crap product. There would be anarchy on the streets!!!! Madden does it year after year.

The graphics are great, as always, and the Superbowl finally got a face lift. All in all I think it would be a good game if I had gone a few years without purchasing a new Madden. If that sounds like you, or you're waiting for something to push you over the homicidal edge, I bet you'll love the game. If you see a used Madden 11 game on Amazon for $12....that's me.

I admit, I'm a sucker for Madden games. Every year I go out and buy it so I can have updated rosters and a few new features. This year the game took a significant backwards step. The game plays well. Cool animations and the commentary is much improved. The graphics are still decent but seriously, how hard is it to make the crowd look realistic? The crowd looks like someone put a bunch of cardboard cutouts in the stand. It truly looks awful and it's a shame in the year 2010 the developers refuse to fix this issue. The gameplay is your typical madden. Your QB throws a crazy number of interceptions, the computer DB know what routes your WR are running thus you can NEVER throw a curl route without getting intercepted. On defense, your guys will blow a countless number of coverages as they let WR run all by themselves. The improved blocking is a nice addition, but how come my special teams players can't block. I watched 1 of my blockers watch a guy run past him then chase after him. How can you implement improved run blocking yet it can't translate to special teams? I'll get to the kicking aspect of special teams in a minute. The franchise mode is exactly the same. It's a disgrace to not even pay attention to the franchise mode or be a pro mode. There is nothing to do between games during a season. The franchise mode has been untouched for years and I just wonder if the developers have no clue what they can do to add to it. I garuntee if you ask Madden players for input, you will get more than enough suggestions.

Madden 2011 is Madden 2010 with a few new animations and completely dumbed down. Their gimmick this year is you can play a game in half the time with Gameflow which the computer will call plays for you. Was anyone really asking for that? If you want to play a game faster, lower the number of minutes in a quarter. 2nd of all, hardcore football fans and madden fans like to call their own plays. It's part of the strategy and you take pride in calling plays that work really well. The special teams has been dumbed down. Seriously, can you actually miss a kick this year?

Overall, Madden 2011 was made to help attract new gamers and spat in the face of hardcore madden fans. When will the loyal madden fans get a game that adds new features for them? Instead, it seems EA wanted to attract new people to make more money rather than please loyal fans. It's a shame.

In today's tough economic times, Madden 11 is the latest release from a major corporation in the consumer goods sector to cross the line of absurdity. You would think that with a growing adult aged audience, increasing negative publicity via social networking, at the very least the love of football would motivate them to put together a product to be proud of. I do not have much to add to the reviews here. The game is simply not fun anymore. Still have my copy of 2005, would love for Microsoft to release the emulator so I could play it on my 360. Things I hate about this game:

Gameflowplay calling sucks at least ask madden I had three to choose from or could back out and choose my own play

Streamlined Menus/ Pre play controls (d pad) Just absurd, how is making selecting things and navigation more difficult "streamlining" You never have total control of a menu and pre-play takes too long is awkward 2005 was better at this

Fight for the Fumble How did this get green lighted for another year?

In 2005 I could save my game at any point of a game. Why the !! can't I do it 6 years later on a next gen console.

Gameplay Is boring, choppy

Franchise Mode Used to be what made this game addicting, Teams moving, expansion draft, sick draft picks, holdouts, players demanding trades, progression with otas. Every year this gets leaner and I find less of a reason to keep playing. Good Riddance I can find better things to do with my time and money. I would rather mow my lawn and mulch around my house.

Honest reviews on Madden NFL 11 - Xbox 360

I decided to give Madden a shot this year, and it was a huge mistake. In short, EA knows they have a cash cow and do everything very sloppy. There is no reason that NCAA Football come out a month earlier and always offers a more polished in game and out of game experience. This game has a shocking 2.5 star on Amazon, and more people need to get the word out to NOT BUY THIS GAME AND FORCE EA TO FIX THE FRANCHISE!!

First the short positives. The graphics are gorgeous, EA keeps perfecting and perfecting the look of real football and has this game looking fantastic. Also, the updated engine (a modified version of the FIFA engine) has the physics of the game looking much more believable and simulation-worthy. Last but not least is the 'locomotion' running game. The two stick running game is very intuitive and offers fantastic control whilst carrying the football. Unfortunately, my praise ends there.

Overall, Madden is a poor offering, and here's why. First of all, they haven't done anything with the franchise or superstar modes, both have been the same since virtually the PS2 era. The price is horrific for a yearly release title, and then to beat more money out of used game sales, they charge ten bucks if the online pass has to be used just to play online (or get roster updates). And while the physics are great, they still managed to pile on the legacy issues and unrealistic gameplay by 'warping' receivers making impossible catches, players dropping easy catches, and seemingly telegraphed picks/completions/runs, etc. My Madden 09 has the same problems and nothing has been done to correct them. The sloppy presentation is broken and illogical. Everything is very broken up on the commentary, there are slight robotic pauses in nearly everything Gus Johnson says. (i.e. they weren't willing to say 'first down', 'second down', and 'third down', but 'first', 'second', 'third', and 'down' and piece them together.) Also dumb comments like Kevin Kolb being one of the NFL's primere passers when he's barely played had me laughing. All-in-all the presentation and commentary is horrible, unless you like to listen to overly emphatic pitches for Old Spice (Be a man...MAN!). And also EA botched Ultimate Team badly. The mode that is great in FIFA and NHL is miserably handled in Madden, which just further shows the developers of Madden's laziness and carelessness. (i.e. they have a cash cow, so why bother?)

But my biggest beef with Madden is now that each game is just a pile of advertisements. Having sponsors of the game or ads on the field are fine, but every play of the game seems to have a sponsor. You're littered with ads from the stats, to the reviews, to the commentator. You really cannot get away from it. And now once you hit the two minute warning, it will take forever to get to the end. You've got to hear all about Verizon, Old Spice, Doritoes, Gatorade, and others. Every. Single. Game. It really hampers the fact you're playing a game and it's more like a chore to sift through advertisements.

All-in-all this year's Madden is bad. Really bad. The additions, sans the running game and engine, are handled poorly. The legacy issues are still there, so you should just play '08 or '09 where they still are there, but the advertisements are not completely running rampant.

But in all honesty, EA has no reason to fix this game. It will still be the best selling sports game in the US, so they'll remain complacent and not fix things that have needed to be fixed and continue adding in more ads year after year. The only way to get them to fix this heralded franchise is to hit them in the wallet and DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

These new changes to bring casual gamers in really hurt the game. None of the features added were requested at all but let me summarize the added features.

1. Gameflow(Ask Madden 2.0)-You press A and it picks a play for you good i guess if you can't do it yourself or dont care what play you do but is this really the main new feature added???

2. Improve Blocking and Catching Awesome ive been waiting for the good blocking and catching for a while.

3. Defense All i can say the hell happened? The defensive AI is worse than last year maybe even 09, playing online on all-pro the score has been over 40 points each game. I like scoring but this is ridiculous.

4. Online Ok so if you quit while playing a ranked before 1st half ends you get no penalty and your opponent gets no win, yea EA what the hell where you thinking on this one.

5. Franchise Mode, Superstar, Madden Moments The same as last year

Im sorry if you disagree but how can you rate this higher??Since I am a Madden fan I hope they fix the issues with a patch because this will have a short life span if they don't.

Update Online quitting is somewhat fixed helps improve ranked game play.

Having never played a Star Ocean game before, I was a little iffy about picking this one up. I didn't know if it would be another Final Fantasy clone or really stand out amongst the masses of JRPG games that have been hitting the 360 lately. After checking out some pretty decent reviews, I decided to take the leap and pick up the game on a whim.

From the start of the game, I got the feeling that the combat would be a lot like Tales of Vesperia. This is a good thing, as I loved every minute of Tales and for a game to bring up memories of a favorite is definitely a plus. The combat is similar, but not exactly the same. Where Tales used a lot of one button (maybe 2 button) presses to take down most enemies, Star Ocean at least involves a little more strategy. You can whip yourself around bad guys when they least expect it (blindside move) and attack from their rear, issue orders, etc. There's a lot going on in combat, but it's not hard to manage. There are a lot of tools at your disposal, how (or if) you use them, are completely up to you. The combat through the first couple hours of the game remained fresh and exciting, and I actually looked forward to getting new skills and abilities. Where other games kind of throw them at you, I got the feeling SO eases you into them and gives them out a lot less often.

The story in this game is different that most RPGs I have played (remember, I never played the other Star Ocean games). The world suffered after World War 3 and sent explorers into the heavens to find a new home for Earthlings. You play Edge Maverick, one of the chosen explorers on the maiden voyage. That's about all you need to know to get started in the game. Like all games though, something has to go horribly wrong and it does, thus throwing you right into the action (if after a pretty long cutscene). There is a support character, named Reimi, who is your childhood bestfriend. The relationship between the two is definitely going to make for some interesting story elements. While they aren't "in love", they do have a very deep bond between the two of them. As time goes on, it looks like a love interest could form between the two given the right circumstances. And by circumstances, I mean user inputted actions. I didn't realize this was something the series does, but you control the feelings of people towards you (to a degree). For instance, in the first level, you stumble upon a flower patch. Reimi looks at the flowers and says they are beautiful. You are given 3 options to respond... "They are beautiful", "You are beautiful", "You are both beautiful". Obviously, being a chick, she want's to hear number 2 and if you choose that, you are going to increase the affinity between you and Reimi. If you chose the flowers are beautiful, Reimi may be insulted and the affinity between the two of you will decrease. With increased affinity comes increased cut scenes and pivotal moments between the characters (this doesn't just happen with Reimi, you can form bonds with all characters). When an affinity reaches a high enough level, guys and girls can share a room together...leaving the rest up to the imagination.

Graphics are a big thing for me. I love the direction current genre games are taking graphics. Tales of Vesperia was a great looking game, but I'm not too big into the anime scene. Last Remnant was a decent looking game, that had trouble performing/loading. Star Ocean on the other hand, looks great. It's nothing to write home about (a la Gears, MGS, or Killzone 2) but it's a very good looking game! Although the characters do show some anime sides to them (namely the eyes), it's easy to look past because they have normal sized features. But, anime might be your thing so that comment is just opinion. The worlds are varied and the colors are really pretty in some areas. You may not have many stop and smell the roses moments, but you will enjoy the ambiance.

Overall, I'm loving Star Ocean: The Last Hope. It's the perfect RPG to hold us fans over until FF13 comes out this year (or next). If you love collecting things, there's a ton of things for you to do. From enemy data, to battle trophies, room items, ship data, spells, it's all there. It's a collector's dream. Finishing this game is said to take around 40-60 hours, but if you want to complete it in it's entirety (all endings, all collectibles, etc.), chalk on another 30-40.

If you are a fan of games such as Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant, and other JRPGs, you're going to love this game. If you are more of a western RPG fan (Mass Effect, Fallout 3) like myself, give this one a try. It's got the sci-fi thing going for it and the combat is very fresh. Battles are in real time and fun. Who knows, maybe it will reawaken your love for JRPGs.

It's been a long time since I wrote a review, but after 300 hours of gameplay, I thought I would make a few points. Star Ocean is a game that, with slightly better writing and development could have been one of the best games of the decade. But it consistenly falls short.

Let's take a bit of a look.

The game is graphically beautiful. Full appreciation is due to the artists and animators. Not just for wandering around the vast multiworld universe that is the setting for the game, but fight animation is also lovingly detailed. Everything is great except for facial expressions. The characters are usually deadpan, and Reimi has a distant stare that is positively chilling.

The story is intricate. Edge and Reimi start out on Earth's attempt to find a colonizable world in order to save the human race from the ruin of a war torn planet. They meet a number of different alien races enlist characters (you wind up playing 4 out of a set of eight characters). Eventually they meet more villanous aliens, uncover a plot to end the universe and have to defeat an evil mastermind. Initially the game is linear, but gradually non-linear elements (such as quests) are introduced and you will do a lot of planet hopping. To some degree there's too much story. The worst example is the infinitely long closing sequence, which is unavoidabe and unstoppable.

Interplayer relationships are interesting as the characters are all quite different. Acting, however, is spotty. The worst example here is the crisis Edge goes through when his actions result in the destruction of a planet. Not his fault, but he spends endless hours whining and beating on himself (massively overacted) before he gets back on track

Gameplay itself is the real problem. The characters are irritatingly difficult to steer, and the precise position needed to accomplish something can be quite elusive. This can get on your nerves. For all the complicated battle options most battles are repetitious and frankly, the bosses are too easy. Or so they are until suddenly they get way to0 hard.

Battle trophy hunting is an important part of character building since you need enough trophies to remove the experience cap and get more than a small handful of things to say while killing mushrooms. Some of these are a matter of pure luck(kill an opponent with exactly the right anount of damage)or really aren't much of a challenge (run away 20 times). None of the other collectables are that hard to get, but they are easy to miss if you don't know that some place is about to be destroyed forever. Which means you will have to play the game at least twice to get the accomplishments. And while I don't mind playing the hack and slash endgame for hours on end, the last thing I want to do is live through Edge's tantrums again.

I have a number of other grumbles, but no doubt you have already figured out that this is a very playable game that simply doesn't live up to its potential. It is a pleasant pass time though so I would recommend it anyway as a good value for the money.

"Terrible graphics!!!"

That's what stands out when I read all of these reviews. I find nobody that thinks these are great graphics. Hmm. I'll get back to this.

Anyway, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the fourth of the series. Its roots are in space and time travel, and often takes place on faraway planets, though its protagonist is generally from Earth. The first Star Ocean (Blue Sphere) never came stateside; instead, we got Star Ocean: The Second Story. During a time when the first PlayStation was hurting for role-playing games, this was a breath of fresh air. It introduced concepts that were new to gamers but taken for granted since: synthesis, cooking, and customization. In truth, The Second Story was really a 100+ hour game if you wanted to accomplish all there was to do.

What The Second Story also brought to the table was challenge. Other games were hard, but TSS is known even to this day as having one of the worst final bosses in RPG gaming history, a man known only as Indalecio. His original form was bad enough, but when you went to a certain private action, he became "Unlimited Indalecio", a true GOD that gamers were not worthy of. Being level 99 didn't do you any good either. That's not even counting the bonus dungeon's boss, Iseria Queen, who is even worse. Bottom line the game was blatantly difficult near the end.

Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time was released on PlayStation 2, and it wasn't well received by gamers, mostly because for the most part it deviated from what made Star Ocean so good. But what gamers don't see is that the third game actually added a piece of gaming goodness to the overall series. It introduced a new character in Welch Vineyard, adored by fans, almost to cultish dimensions. It also had a lot of small "throwback" things like science centers named after famous inventors in the previous and subsequent games, and bonus dungeon battles with notable characters from the past. It wasn't a bad game really...and didn't get the fair shake it deserved.

Not too long ago came two PSP remakes: Star Ocean: The First Departure and Star Ocean: The Second Evolution, based on the first and second Star Ocean games, respectively. While the gameplay is identical, these are definitely remakes in that a number of things were changed, most notably the difficulty of the second game being toned down and the skill tree being a lot more friendly than before. For those that never played the first game, First Departure was a great opportunity to find out what the first game was about, and when you play it, you get a better sense of the overall storyline.

Enter The Last Hope. This story takes place prior to the events of the first Star Ocean (using First Departure as a reference point), so if you never played the other games, a lot of the things you'll notice won't go over with you, but if you did play the others, you'll hear music that will remind you of each game, and meet characters that you either recall from the other game or who must be related to others from the previous games. There's definitely a lot of fan service to be had here.

Your protagonist is Edge Maverick, a young crewman on the Calnus. A disaster on Earth has rendered the planet unsuitable for human life, and the SRF (the organization you belong to) has been ordered to seek out habitable planets to identify their viability as a new place to live. If that story sounds familiar, at least somewhat, it's actually quite close to the story in Star Trek III: The Wrath of Khan, and one of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes where terraformers are attempting to find planets that would be suitable for colonization. Unlike those however, a space "bubble" knocks you and your other ships off course, causing you to crash land on your first planet. While the plan appears to be quite like Earth, there is a darker side (this story is commonly seen on the original Star Trek). You can hopefully see where I'm going with this...there's also some instances of time travel that are quite interesting, yet infuriating at the same time. You'll end up hopping from planet to planet to achieve your objective.

Now that you have a sense of the basic storyline, let's get to the game itself. As mentioned before, it spans three full DVDs; that's over 13GB of data, for those too lazy to do the math. You can do the install to the hard drive, but be forewarned that there is a going speculation that doing so causes the game to freeze. I did experience a freeze, but I can't confirm for a fact that the install was the cause. I do installs to keep my drive from going out, and don't intend to stop anytime soon. Part of the problem with the spanned disks is that different planets are so large that they literally exist on specific discs. I know other games have the same issue. The problem is that if you wanted to go back to an older planet (and you will have to, for mining and such), you need to insert that disc. What I don't know yet is whether or not you can just install all three discs and avoid the disc swapping altogether. I assume you can, but haven't yet tested that theory. Seems though that you'd still need to swap discs, since the 360 requires the disc be in the drive in order to even access the stored data.

The music in the game is quite excellent, but for the fact that the tracks are quite short indeed. Older Star Ocean games also had short tracks, but keep in mind they were limited by the space on CDs during the PlayStation era. Either they kept the tracks short in order to emphasize the nostalgia, or they just didn't have the space left over to accommodate the music tracks in full. Of particular exception are the tracks from older planets like Roak (First Evolution) where the music from that game is playing, instantly inciting nostalgia. The extremely short, repeating nature of these beautiful tracks is the only issue here. As far as the voice acting, people are complaining about it, but I found it quite good, honestly. I mean compare this voice acting to Infinite Undiscovery or Tales of Vesperia...and you see there is no comparison. At least in this game, the personality of each character is brought to life extremely well, except for maybe Reimi (because she sounds like every other video game heroine). Part of the measure of good voice acting is whether you are emotionally moved by the character when they're speaking about something and yes, some people don't get moved at all by game characters but when someone like Lymle is expressing how sad she is, in a way a child definitely would in the same situation, you can't help but appreciate the voice acting that much more.

In terms of challenge, I found the game to be quite balanced compared to other RPGs of this style. Regular enemies for the most part are not difficult; you do get multiple difficulty settings to choose from, but even on the harder settings you can still reasonably work your way through the majority of regular enemies. They're aggressive, but your characters are even more aggressive. Once you master all of the nuances of battle, you will find yourself breezing through the majority of battles without a scratch. The challenge comes in when you encounter bosses though these behemoths (and they're always behemoths, aren't they) will almost always give you at least a slight challenge, whether it's juggling you in the air, blasting you with flames or freezing you to death. But that's how it should be, in my opinion: regular enemies are moderately challenging, bosses even more so, but neither so difficult as to throw your controller against a wall.

Speaking of battle, the gameplay engine in The Last Hope is a throwback to the older Star Ocean games who really pioneered the action battle along with the Tales series...but The Last Hope threw in just a little bit of uniqueness to break the mold. Here you control your main character as he hacks his way to victory, and yes, you can take control of your other characters as you see fit. But this game offers some flavor. You can do some short range jumps in the four directions; so to the left/right, toward or away from your enemy. This is great if you need to dodge, or cut down distance to your enemy to effectively defeat them. You can also transition from the jump into the Blindside attack, which allows you to quickly run behind your enemy. If done correctly, not only will you dodge the attack, but you will surprise the enemy and do critical hits on their backside. From there you can throw regular or special attacks; even chain special attacks together if you've got a skill that allows you to do so, racking up major damage. Rounding out the feature is the Rush attack, which can be best described as a limit break. When executed, you and another team member will unleash a flurry of blows to one enemy to multiply the damage dealt. I found myself not really using this, simply because it takes a long time to build up the gauge that drives it, and the damage wasn't all that great compared to regular attacking and special moves.

As you fight and pull of special attacks, you'll build up slots on the Bonus Board, which gives you various bonuses such as Exp and Fol. It also can give you free SP which can be used to build up your skills, or HP/MP to heal you after each battle. But be careful; the enemy can destroy part of your Bonus Board if they hit you hard or frequently enough, so you really can't just bull rush every single fight. You need to pay attention and stay on the move in order keep the advantage. The Bonus Board also apparently disappears when you save and cut the game off, which I understand, but don't care for.

Making a return in a toned down fashion is the item creation feature. In Star Ocean 1 and 2, you could create items anywhere you wanted just by having the skill active. That meant cooking, alchemy, blacksmithing, etc...could all be done on the road so you could get stuff ready for that next cheating boss. Star Ocean 3 (Till The End Of Time) did away with this and centralized Item Creation to Welch Vineyard, with some exceptions. The Last Hope forces you to go back to the Calnus whenever you want to do any Item Creation whatsoever. While this does increase the strategy, it becomes a bit of a chore, because not only do you have to do the creation back at the Calnus, but also the recipe creation (you can't just find the recipes out and about and you can't just randomly mix ingredients to make stuff like parts 1 and 2). Some characters are better than others at specific skills, and unlike the previous games, you won't have a situation where the entire team can do blacksmithing or alchemy; each character has a specialty that they stick with, and while each character might have tendencies toward one skill or another, they will never do it better than the one who owns the skill. It is good to see Welch back of course, but her "edginess" has been toned down from part 3. No more witnessing her 'special dreams' here, as she's really just a holographic projection from Earth headquarters.

The Last Hope boasts some rather massive landforms for each planet and expansive dungeons. It will take you a couple of hours AT LEAST to complete a specific area, assuming you're not rushing. This has to do with the size of the areas, but also some of the puzzles that are thrown at you, which honestly aren't bad as..say...Equinox (SNES game), but they're certain to get on your nerves. What's funny is that often the item you need or the door you need to go into is just very cleverly concealed, and when you do find it, you'll likely groan at just how hard you made stuff on yourself. That's what the game does well: force you to feel bad about yourself because it seems like something is really difficult, when it actually is dirt simple.

Okay, boys and girls...the graphics. I save the best for last. All I've seen on every review is how the graphics are poor. Quite honestly, I think people need to upgrade their TVs or they don't know how to configure their TVs properly, because on my DLP LED 61" Samsung (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HL61A750-61-Inch-1080p-Powered/dp/B001415FIG/ref=cm_cr-mr-title), this game is as beautiful as they come. I've heard people say Lost Odyssey looks better? Nuh uh. The individual hair strand detail of The Last Hope blows Lost Odyssey away, and at times the true 3D effect is so pronounced as to be mind blowing. The draw distance is the best yet, and looking out on some planets makes you truly feel as though you've traveled to another place; Roak is a prime example of this. I believe what people are having issue with is the bloom lighting effect; it is somewhat strong, but no more so than Gears of War, which is what this game looks like. It uses the Unreal engine, I'm told...as did Infinite Undiscovery, another beautiful game and the game is simply gorgeous, all the way around. There are some intermittent places where the blending was not done properly, most notably in some shadowed areas, but it's the exception rather than the rule. Setting contrast just below maximum, brightness at max, and sharpness midway results in just a striking game. People...upgrade your sets please.

So what are the game's issues? In a nutshell, I wasn't happy with the fact that the Blindside doesn't always execute. You'll follow the conditions explicitly, yet nothing will happen, and then you get put in a spot where you are getting pummeled. Or you'll do the Blindside, it executes, but you get cut off by another attack that didn't even touch you. Or my personal favorite, when you try to dodge enemies on the field, and get stuck behind an invisible object (hit detection issue with some of the scenery) and get attacked from behind. All issues with the engine, and not the overall game, which I find to be quite excellent. Not perfect, just excellent.

In summary: I have no idea what these other cats are talking about putting this game down. This game clearly pushes the 360's capabilities more than most of the other games that are out for the system, and hopefully KOEI and others can sit up and observe how it's done. This is a must buy, in my opinion, and I hope to see other games like this.

Honest reviews on Star Ocean: The Last Hope - Xbox 360

I was a big fan of j-rpgs in my youth. In recent years however I have become a bit melancholy. This is not because J-rpgs have gotten worse. Put simply it is akin to loving a flavor of ice cream but getting sick of it after eating too much.

So when I say Star Ocean Last Hope is a great game and addicting to play that is a testament of quality. In truth I dreaded getting this game. I was afraid I'd get tired of it after playing it a mere 3 hours and put it on my shelf where it would hence forth collect the dusts of obscurity. Imagine my glee when this mishap did not happen!

Before I go into how great star ocean last hope is I figure I will take time to warn you of its' shortcomings first. This game is guilty of having a blond idealistic youth as its' main protagonist. Almost every stereotype you can think of that inhabits sci fi japanese anime settings makes an appearance. The voice acting at times is grating. Not because the voice actors/actresses are bad but because of the lines they are made to read.

If you disdain playfully rambuncious cute nekos , adorable little girls that wave magic wands, big breasted pointy eared milfs, stoic self sacrificing cyborg scientists, the typical childhood girl friend next door, naive feather winged angel babes that come along with the baggage of prophetic nightmares, long haired brooding scythe wielding bishi-boys, and the usual sibling rivalry established between two best friends avoid last hope at all costs. It is not trying to be radically different from other J-rpgs. If anything it is proud of being what it is. Still reading? Still think Last Hope holds merit? Good, because the worst it has to throw at you ends with this paragraph!

The most rewarding aspect of star ocean is its' combat engine. When you wade into battle with enemies after charging them head first it's go time! You will be running around the battle field, jumping, side stepping attacks, stringing together combos, and strategically taking cover so you can fire off your spells without being interrupted. The fights are very much in "real time" and to me the system is much like the Tales series. (Though fans of the Tales games claim it's battle system is still better).

For a guy such as me tired of heroes getting in a perfect line to match their enemies on the other end of the court as if everyone is about to engage in a poetry slam fest or dance off this is a huge ray of sun shine. Combat is last hope is fast, furious, and in your face. It's easy to switch off + take control of each character and whether you like long range attacks or up close attacks you'll find someone that fits your style of play.

"Beats" are styles that give each protagonist different tactics and bonuses when facing their foes. You can also reconfigure everyone's battle ai if a certain series of actions are making you come up short handed. Nothing about this is truly original but it works well and getting a varied number of "battle trophies" makes you feel a sense of accomplishment.

The story in Last Hope is engaging. It will keep you playing to see what happens next BUT also be aware it is not trying to be high-brow literature. Think about any favorite Sci Fi series you have watched. Not every episode blew your mind. Not every character stuck out as memorable. However you tolerated a few lags or annoyances knowing the series would "pick up" in season two or be handed off to a better writer. Last hope is this same roller coaster. The plummeting dips are worth tolerating to get to the exhilarating high points!

To get the most out of last hope there are a few things I'd advise.

1# When you get Bacchus immediatly go to Aeos + Lemuria to mine: Mining is essential for collecting gems and metals to make good stuff when you communicate with Welch who helps you from earth. It can be a pain to neglect this and have to back track later. It may even require switching cds. The moment I got Bacchus I re-visited Aeos and Lemuria to drill for resources.

2# Have Reimi harvest: Whenever you get a chance have Reimi harvest plants and vegetables. Whereas mining is essential to create weapons and armor "plants" are used in recipes to make awesome potions and foods that replenish magic, restore health, and cure ailments.

3# Be balanced upgrading your skills: Do not just pump your combat abilities. Occasionally put points into things such as cooking, alchemy, artistry, robotics, and smithing. These trades aid you when creating new artifacts. Sometimes what you make is better than the merchandise offered in stores.

4# Switch out characters in your idea groups: When you talk to Welch you create teams to invent. Try switching off people in each team until the ideas keep flowing.

5# Do not sleep through a whole voyage...Socialize!: Right before you go to a new planet you have "free time" on your ship. Instead of sleeping until arrival see if your friends and crew mates have interesting things to say. These events sometimes occur after you take a short nap. Depending on how you respond to people will gradually effect the story.

6# It's a Japanese RPG....embrace it, don't be hating!: Lymle says "kay" a lot and some angst ridden people hate her for that reason alone. I find this ridiculous considering she has a decent back story, lovable personality, and is a useful magic user. Look, even in real life our friends have little annoying habits or weird quirks. It's true J-Rpgs capitalize on "cute" "odd" or "sexy time" at every opportunity. While these exaggerations of certain themes can be awkward also remember such things were done in our favorite J-rpgs in the past too. (Even Chrono trigger had it's dose of perverted erotic innuendo + annoying hero habits) If you knit pick enough you'll find "the bad" in every thing. Instead, weigh everything fairly and acknowledge the good as well.

Pros and cons

+Engaging story set after World War 3 in which mankind is forced to reach out to the stars.

+Is the prequel to the first Star Ocean. Fans of the series will get a lot of service!

+Fun exciting combat

+ Environments are interesting to explore. Area puzzles are not too hard to figure out. (For the most part)

+Crafting system is easy to understand.

+Good music

+Characters become more and more likable as you learn about them.

+Socializing is encouraged between planet jumping

+Boss fights are challenging but rarely escalate to being frustrating.

Cons

-Every anime stereotype you can imagine rears its' head screaming. Nothing is subtle. This IS a J-RPG.

At first many of the protagonists seem to come from cookie cutter character molds and they sometimes speak annoying dialogue.

-It's nice to be able to "dash around" enemies the only problem is there are so many of them in certain scenarios "escape" is not always an option.

-Expect to level grind....a lot.

-If you want to make the best objects and do certain side quests back tracking and cd switching become annoying obstacles.

Pro or con?

+/Overall the graphics look beautiful but the faces of some of the characters look as if the designers struggled between "anime" and "semi realism" to such a large degree the end results appear a bit off somehow.

+/Edge Maverick is a bright eyed optimist towards the beginning of the story but a mishap that happens in an alternate dimension makes him mopey for awhile. At least he eventually gets the spring back in his step later on. Personally for me it was nice to see a main protagonist express a large range of emotions. Edge is definetely a cut deeper than Cloud or the typical "silent hero" types. I suppose I can forgive him for being "emo". If I felt responsible for screwing up a whole civilization I would likely act much the same. (And hey, he does move on)

+/Some have said "blind siding" is difficult. This is a combat manuever in which you charge up, jump towards an enemy's weak spot, and do more damage by exploiting their vulnerability. I am actually able to do it once or twice per battle but admittedly when you are charging up it leaves you open to attacks. Perhaps this aspect of combat could have been done better but considering all variables it's still a nice feature.

Rent/buy? This is up to you. If you love J-rpgs and don't mind some lighthearted Saturday morning cartoon fluff mixed with a dash of melodrama and over epic cheese you should bite into this juicy morsel asap. However if you are not big on the whole "Japanese RPG" phenomenon give it a pass and conserve your cash.

I've played Star Ocean for as long as I can remember, and RPG's are a big part of my life. I played RPG's before the first Zelda game came out and everything was just text-based and I have to say that the Star Ocean series is my favorite "get away from reality" series.

The Good:

Lasting appeal can be about 30 hours or a few hundred hours. To finish absolutely everything in the game might take you about 300-500 hours. The fighting system takes a getting used to just like any other star ocean game, but ultimately it's your choice how far you want to go. You can challenge yourself and defeat the final boss at level 40 if you dare, I've done it and it took about 3 hours to beat without counting the few times that I have died. Like other Star Ocean games, there are post-game events and tons of stuff to do. The graphics are decent as what you'd expect from a A+ title for the Xbox 360 or PS3. This game is a jRPG and like a jRPG expect the difficulty level to be rather high for novice gamers. Once you unlock the final difficulty level, you will find yourself going insane but ultimately become an unstoppable machine by the post-game dungeons. The story is decent, and gets even better if you're familiar with the ancient astronaut theory and related theories because this game is designed with similar ideas and concepts that can be appreciated for what it's worth.

The Bad:

The controls are funky, and the 360 version has upscaling issues with 1080p. Many people have experienced problems when they have 1080p enabled where the game will just crash. Changing it to 1080i or 720p will fix this issue, but you're not getting the best out of the game. As it turns out the problem may come down to one or two spells that cause this issue during battle. Another bad point is that the 360 version doesn't look as crisp nor does it contain the Japanese voices and if you're like me and can't stand the american dubs, it might be worth going with the PS3 version (if possible) just for that reason alone.

Xbox 360 or PS3?

If you have the choice between the two, go with the PS3 version, even if it's a few dollars more expensive (which it may not be). The reason for this is because there are less discs to deal with, you don't have the 1080p issues, the game looks far more amazing on the PS3, and the Japanese voices are selectable. I own the Xbox version but have seen others play the PS3 version and read a lot about it and wish that I had gone with it instead.

As good as other Star Ocean games?

Absolutely! There are some people that are anal about this game, saying it wasn't as good and some people thought that the game focused too hard on the morals (which you'll see within a few hours playing the game) but in reality, how can you beat Star Ocean 2: Director's Cut? It was the last chapter of the series, and a prequel will not be able to have as many crazy story twists like a finale. If you haven't played any other Star Ocean game, this is the perfect starter. It may not feel like the best Star Ocean game, but it's certainly a quality title worth mentioning.

Anything else?

It's quite possible that there will be a new Star Ocean game coming out. A few months ago triace demoed their new game engine with Star Ocean characters that looked next-gen for current gen consoles by utilizing an entirely new game engine and it looks amazing! Now, there's no official word at the moment but I doubt that the Star Ocean universe is over and if it is, there's likely to be similar titles in the future. Infinite Undiscovery is also another game worth mentioning. It isn't as popular as Star Ocean and the quality isn't near as good but it's worth playing if you're into jRPG's. I haven't completed that one but look into it. It's different but in a good way. If you'll excuse me I have to go back and play Skyrim

Back in June my second Xbox 360 decided to succumb to the red ring of death; this time I, unfortunately, decided against buying the extended warranty so of course my 1-year warranty ended in April--merely two months before the Xbox died. This did not bode well for my Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare addiction. Well I found I had two options, pay a hundred bucks to Microsoft and almost certainly have it die on me again or just buy the PC version of the game and switch over from console to PC gaming. I decided to go with the second option because PC gaming allows for so many more options and is not as restrictive as to the games available. The major problem I had was that I've been using controllers to play games my entire life and just never really got used to playing with a mouse and keyboard.

I did some searching and found a number of ways to play PC games with a controller, but they were all rather complicated and required some advanced PC knowledge and/or a considerable amount of time to configure. SwitchBlade on the other hand was very easy and simple to install and use and I was playing my favorite game within minutes... CoD4 withdrawal is terrible! I was so happy with the software it made me wonder what other games I could play using it and was amazed to see support for World of Warcraft. I've always been somewhat of a nerd and had a hard time parting with EverQuest back in the day so I thought I'd give WoW a shot and downloaded the 15 day trial. I wasn't too big of a fan of WoW because it seemed like everything was handed to the players (back in my day we had to walk 10 miles to school in the snow uphill both ways) but using SwitchBlade with the game was truly a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Movement was so intuitive and the number of hotkeys available in the software is amazing--it even comes with a keyboard built in!

Anyway, I highly recommend this product to anyone who enjoys playing games with a controller.

I'm not much of a competitive gamer but I like how the skills I've developed playing games on my X Box can translate over to playing PC Games with a controller. Playing on the PC gives me more variety in the fields of play, and I can compete against guys around the world, not just my friends. They have their own server. Switchblade Pro was easy to install and start playing CoD4 right away. It's easier to kick back in my chair and play, rather than hunched over a keyboard.

The Intec Pro Mini-2 X-Box Controller is absolute garbage! To post a review one is required to offer a rating, unfortunately the rating system doesn't go low enough to properly reflect the quality of these controllers. On a scale of 1 to 5, these rate a negative 10!

I am a gamer with thousands of hours behind the controller, most notably with the Halo game series. While every brand of controller has it's quirks, generally they they will perform similarly to the Microsoft OEM controller. An exception must be made for this extremely poor quality knock-off. The joysticks have no ability for subtle movement (sensitivity), they are either moving or not, there is no in between, no matter how delicately the operator attempts to manipulate them and regardless of the level of sensitivity applied to the software settings of the controller. All of the buttons seem to have a time delay between the moment they are depressed and when they decide to activate whatever action they are intended to operate. That is ALL of the buttons, stop/start, A/B/X/Y, and the white and black buttons under the A/B/X/Y buttons. Even the triggers seem sluggish. This is assuming that any of the buttons respond at all.

If you are looking for a suitable replacement to your OEM X-Box controllers, these are not it! Do not buy these, you'll be extremely disappointed if you do.

Gears of War shouldn't be a stranger to any gamer's ears at this point. It's won an absolute truckload of awards and is far and away one of the best shooters available today. It's really a game that should not be missed.

Enter the 2-Disc edition, which with it's reduced price and bonus content is perfect for those that didn't get to jump on board the first time around. A lot of this content is available to download from Xbox LIVE, however as a new purchase its nice to receive all the maps and such already in the box. Also you'll get the exclusive "Emergence Day" gamer themes and pics that were only available at a limited time during the launch in 2006.

If you're already a Gears owner, then this is not the package for you, but as someone looking to get in on the action before the fall of Gears of War 2, this is a great package at an awesome value.

This is perhaps THE MOST polished third-person shooter I've played since Resident Evil 4. Its cover-combat system is highly influential in its genre and its influence can be felt in more recent efforts such as Mass Effect 2 and GTA IV. The game knows not to bore us with plot and introduces us to a variety of hilarious macho characters. The action is intense and non-stop. The night-time levels are superbly atmospheric. I can see why this franchise is so popular!

Campaign review: GoW is a nice change of pace from Halo 3 in that you're fighting a losing battle in GoW and the fighting is more "gritty." For whatever reason, GoW seems like more of a challenge to me than Halo 3.

Review of Bioshock - Xbox 360

Bioshock - Xbox 360
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

I have been an avid PC and console gamer for...well, as long as there have been PC and console games, and have probably played hundreds of the darn things over the last two decades, and I can comfortably say, that Bioshock, is one of the top two or three games I have ever played, and absolutely the best console game.

It's one of those rare games, that has all of what you love about a great game, with none of what annoys you. I realized, after about 10 hours of play, that absolutley nothing was ticking me off. If there was ever a game that got everything right, it's Bioshock.

Normally, you hear much about a shooter having an "absorbing story", and you're just like: "yeah, yeah, just shut up and let me shoot you". But Bioshock, actually does. The bleak, dystopian world scenario is hardly new in gaming, but Bioshock puts a great twist on things; and the art-deco 1940's sci-fi world is very refreshing and incredibly rendered. If you are as sick as I am of endless hallways filled with crates, you are in for a helluva treat. Not only does this game look amazing, but the design is so good, and so original, that it really does "absorb" you.

The biggest suprise to me, was level of literacy, and period detail. This game wasn't really designed for modern kids, and certainly wasn't designed by one. The villian, an obvious nod to conceptual novelist Ayn Rand, ends up being more complex than the average "evil rich corporate Republican" guy we're all so sick of by now, and not only is the voice acting a-list quality, but they even speak pretty authentic 1940's dialogue, with accurate period inflection. If you watch an old movie from the 40's you'll notice that not only was the slang and colloquial language different, but so was the actual style of speech. The characters in Bioshock don't sound like modern mallrats in seersucker suits, they sound like people from the 40's. The sense of period is very accurate, moreso than most Hollywood films (although a "German" lady character has a very obiously Russian accent lol).

Even the shooting, was fabulously fun. When I first started playing, I thought "oh no..shooting old revolvers isn't fun." But don't forget, even though Bioshock takes place in the 40's, it's still a sci-fi what-if adventure, and the assortment of weapons are a gas to use. And "adventure" is really accurate. Even though it's an FPS with a fair amount of bloody shooting, it really feels and plays more like an old Sierra adventure game than a Quake-style shooter. The plot matters in this game, unlike many others, and you spend more time exploring the amazing world and solving puzzles than actually shooting, so consider that a mild warning if you are a shooting "rivethead".

Bioshock is a very long game, but it was so addicting, that I played it almost non-stop for 4 days and finished it. I actually just rented it, because normally games that are centered on plot don't have a lot of replay value for me, but this one I can imagine playing over and over, so the lack of multi-player doesnt really matter to me here. I'll be buying this sucker as soon as payday hits.

In short, the hype around Bioshock is no hype. This game even killed Half-life and Halo for me, and that's saying a lot. Halo3 is going to have a helluva climb to even get near Bioshock, and i never thought I'd say that.

To wrap-up, even though much of Bioshock's conceptual nods and references will probably sail over the heads of most modern teen gamers, it won't matter a darn. They'll be to busy being knocked out by the best visual world and gameplay mechanics I've ever seen.

I thought Gears of War was a good game, but I believe Bioshock outdoes Gears of War on multiple levels. First, the storyline is solid, I feel like I am participating in a self-directed movie, opposed to the typical experience of a weak storyline combining together sequences of violence. Second, Bioshock is not about who has the biggest gun, there is an element of strategy not found in previous FPS games with the exception maybe of Gears of War. Finally, the game is intuitive, easy to pickup. I am not a big fan of FPS games, typically enjoying games like Civilization IV, however, this game is one big exception.

Best Deals for Bioshock - Xbox 360

Having a bit of hype surrounding it before it's release, BioShock does not disappoint one bit. In fact, as far as first person shooters go, games rarely get any better than this. BioShock takes the FPS to new levels thanks to it's brilliantly realized atmosphere and setting, and a story that is so engaging you'll think that you were playing an RPG. Taking place in a secret underwater city called Rapture, you get put right in the middle as things go very, very wrong quite quickly, and it's up to you to save the day using a barrage of traditional weapons, and some newfound abilities as well. What makes BioShock so great besides the atmosphere and storyline are the character customization options which really allow the gamer to get into the game and tinker around to your advantage. The overall presentation, from the sound design to the wonderful voice acting to the grimy atmosphere, make BioShock one of the best games to hit the XBox 360 yet, and definitely one of the best FPS' to come out in quite some time. If there's any downsides to BioShock, it's that the game has a lack of enemy variety and that it is a little too forgiving to the gamer. Despite that though, BioShock is a masterpiece of modern gaming, and any and every 360 owner should consider this an essential pick up.

Honest reviews on Bioshock - Xbox 360

This is by far the most interesting, fun, adventurous game since last years Zelda for the Wii. There is so much to do in this game, you can hack into safes, invent items, shock someone in the water, use a crowbar to knock someone out, anything you want to do, you can. I didn't hear about this game until last week when Microsoft released a demo of it last week. I played the demo and immediately got hooked. I went out early this morning "21 Aug 07" and purchased this game. I have played it for roughly five hours and it has been so much fun. It's not super confusing and it's like a choose your own adventure game. The classical eery music is an added plus. If you own an XBOX 360 and you are looking for the "Next Big Game", or you just want a Phenomenal gaming experience, purchase this game, I guarantee you will not be disapointed. The only negative for me is that this game really makes other games look really bad. But that's a negative that I will just have to deal with. Now I am going to shut off the laptop and get back to playing.

Very simply put right now this game is easily the best shooter to come out for the 360 in a long time.

Not only does it have some very tense and fun gameplay.

The lighting and graphical displays shown within are pretty much second to none as of this moment.

I bought the game on midnight of the 20th/21st and immediately went home to play it. The experience of just how good the graphics are was 10 fold when I was playing with the lights off. I dont even have a HDTV and I was purely impressed by just how good everything looked.

The game also goes a long way to genuinely disturb and creep you out.

Its not the typical BOO factor like games like the Resident Evil series and maybe even FEAR. Not that that is a bad thing.

But this game tends to be creepy on a psychological level only truly experienced by playing first hand.

The idea of this underwater utopian city gone completely wrong may not be the most original idea but it is definitely executed well.

The sounds are easily the number one thing that makes the game so creepy at times. If you do get to play it, find a spot to just stand still for a moment and take it all in. You hear everything from steam pipes creaking to soft whispers of one of 2k's delightfully twisted characters coming from somewhere up ahead. And the sounds you hear aren't always necessarily right around the corner. Which is whats so great, the voices you hear may be coming from the other side of a wall or a room down the pathway.

The AI is also really impressive. They do things like run and jump into water when set on fire, they take off running when they get low on health. They attack in numbers at times making for some very frantic and fast paced combat. The number of weapons and plasmid modifications is truly something to behold. The ability to aim your electric shock at water and fry your opponents may not seem like a big deal, but when you can do that instead of wasting numerous rounds of ammunition believe me you will appreciate it much more. The weapon combos are great. You can shock and stun opponents, set them on fire, freeze them, tag them so that security drones will attack them instead of you. All the while still being able to do something as simple as a shotgun blast to the face.

I do wish cycling weapons was a bit quicker at times. Your right hand weapons are bound to the RB button and you have to cycle thru them in order to find the right one which can be annoying in times of a fast firefight. But you can easily overcome this.

Bottom line is, this one definitely has my vote for Game of the Year, or maybe Assassins Creed but that one is still yet to be seen.

Go out and buy this one if you can, it is definitely worth the price of admission.

Trapped in the haunted mansion of the mad toymaker, Stauf, with no memory of your past, you must seek out your past ... your purpose ... the fate of the six murdered guests, long ago ... and the seventh guest. To begin with, this is *not* an action title. With this game, you can give your flying fingers a rest. Everything's connected with puzzles, and there are no time limits (though you may wish there were when you hit your twentieth dead end in the Maze and hear Stauf say, "Feeling ... lonely ... ?" again ... ). Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles. A profusion and plethora of puzzles in prodigious plentitude. Switch puzzles, slider puzzles, card and coin puzzles ... even the old game of Jump-Away. (Played with knives on a pentagram, mind you ... )And with each puzzle solved (the game can even solve them for you) you learn a little more about what happened on that long-ago night. The puzzles range from, "Okay, this is tricky", to "HELP! ". But with all the walkthroughs out here on the 'Net, plus the hint book in the library, you'll muddle through eventually. Graphics: This game is beautiful. The knives, the cards, the house itself ... everything is in fully-rendered 3-D, with remarkable shading and texture. Mind you, this takes some computer time ... the Minimum Requirements list a Pentium 133MHz. My P100 made it, but the MIDI tended to stall sometimes. Sound: Speaking of MIDI, this game is loaded with it. Eerie, haunting refrains accompany most of your actions, while screams, moans, and eerie footsteps whisper in your ears. I've worked in a professional haunted house ... these guys are GOOD. That said, the voice acting is a hash. Most of the actors are almost laughably bad, playing a gam-ut of emotions that result in an almost campy atmosphere. Note I said "almost". Stauf has the biggest part in the game, and he knows how to work it. The actor really leans on it, but the character is a dyed-in-the-wool villain anyway ... he can take it. The children, on the other hand ... . You'll have to hear it for yourself. It's chilling. On the whole, a solid game, with few flaws.

When The 7th Guest was first released in 1993, it was pretty much just a CD-ROM showcase: "Look what I can do." Further technological advancements, though, haven't proven kind to The 7th Guest, but the game remains as good now as it ever was. It's mostly an series of puzzles and brain teasers with only the barest thread of a story (and not always a clear, sensible one, at that) to connect them. Some of the puzzles, however, are pretty good, and the game has a wonderful, creepy style that infects every puzzle with an energy that definitely sets The 7th Guest apart from most other puzzle games. If you know what you're getting yourself into, there's no reason you can't enjoy The 7th Guest today.

I really liked this game, it had just the right mixture of subtle creepiness and intrigue to keep me interested. As it's an older game the graphics might not look impressive by today's standards, but the store more than makes up for it.

The premise is that Stauf, a former criminal turned rich toymaker has invited people to his mansion and offered whomever can solve his puzzles whatever they desire. It's hinted to you that none of the guests were ever seen from again so not only do you have the mystery of the mansion itself to solve but you also have the mystery of finding out what happened to everybody to figure out as well.

The interface is clean and easy to use. You wander around in a very Myst-like first person perspective and your cursor changes whenever you wave it over something you can look closer at, a movie you can watch, or a puzzle to solve... it's nice to have this little detail instead of clicking madly on the screen trying to find the 'magic pixel' that will take you further into the game.

The music by The Fat Man is also very well done (In fact you can buy the soundtrack right here on Amazon!)and adds a lot to the game. Overall it has just the right mixture of intrigue as you watch Stauf set the guests against each other and play his little psychological games, and puzzles as you progress your way deeper and deeper into the mansion.

For the price, you get a lot. And its worth it.

"Old man Stauf built a house

And filled it with his toys

Six guests all came one night

Their screams the only noise...

No one knows what happened next

There's no one left to say

But if you should see Old Man Stauf

Get on your knees & pray..."

You have been sent an invitation to attend an event by Mr. Stauf, world-renowned toymaker.

There are many legends surrounding this enigmatic man he has quite an infamous reputation. Are they truths or lies? That is for you to decide. Either way, mystery surrounds him, just the way he likes it. Rumour has it he's a Warlock in league with The Devil...

Dare you go through the Gates of his ominous mansion?

You are set free to peruse the many darkened rooms & hallways. Each contains a different puzzle to solve, a different riddle to decipher. Eventually, you will find who this "madman" really is.....are you prepared?

Overall, this game is multi stimulating. Aesthetically, it is just beautiful splenderous gloriously gloomy. The digital artwork is visually stunning, & very detailed. The artistry of it all draws you into the scenery, with third-dimensional effects so much so, you could get lost within those lambent corridors for hours.

The puzzles are a bit trying at first, especially because you even have to figure out how they particularly work but after that, it's one brainblending / gratifying riddle after another.

The music therein provides for a thickly eerie atmosphere that makes one want to jump right into the screen.

The CD Music on disc II

If you play this CD on your CD player alone, there are a series of songs available just to listen to, based upon those within the game. Some songs contain lyrics, some are instrumentals. The first is a rather mediocre attempt at replicating the Gothic, or Death Rock style.

Most of the same effects are used throughout, with sound samples of Mr. Stauf & terrified guests.

It seems the music was orchestrated to accentuate Stauf's "insanity", or genius, depending upon how you look at it.

There are a couple of Noiresque tunes, the most notable being "Dry Bones", sung with a very sultry female voice, which I picture being sung by a cross between Jessica Rabbit & Morticia Addams.

The 7th Guest is a veritable ghoulish conundrum that will have you become a regular guest of The Stauf's Manor again & again.

Kudos to the Technomancers. The 7th Guest is Spooktacular.

This is one of the most amazing games I have ever played. This game was originally released in 1992 or 1993 and for it's time, it was way ahead in terms of graphics and story telling. Hell, it still has better graphics than some of the games that come out now. For me, this is the game that made me want to buy a computer which I did less than a month later. It has very challenging puzzles and some comedy along the way as Stauf adds his comments to either the path you choose or your success/failure to do a puzzle. If you like action, this is not your game. If you like solving puzzles, unraveling mysteries, and a game that makes you use your head, this is it. One of the best games of all time and the best puzzle solving game ever. But don't take my word on it. Get this for yourself.

Review of NBA Jam - Xbox 360

NBA Jam - Xbox 360
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

So, if you are like me and my friends and spent lots of quarters on the original arcade game, this will take you back.

We played the heck out of the older versions on the Sega Genesis, N64, Sega Dreamcast and the odd Xbox 3-on-3 version.

Since Jam went away we switched to EA's NBA Street.

Street was fun, but it was almost became as complicated as a fighting game with all of the combos you needed to do.

This Xbox 360 version is a total remake of the original arcade game. Big Head mode and all.

This isn't a deep game, but there is more to it than just "Play Now", but it isn't NBA 2K11.

So the question is, is Jam worth the full retail price? I would say no unless you are dying for a multiplayer game that doesn't involve a gun or you

are an old school fan like me.

This is one of the few multiplayer games I can play with my son and his friends. Most games, like the Lego series are only two player games.

I rated it four stars because it is a great re-make of a great game.

It plays just like the old arcade machine.

I love the gameplay. I love the graphics and the play by play is fun.

There are some quirks.

The on-line gameplay is broken for now. That is inexcusable. You can't play anyone, I assuming this will be fixed ASAP. (right EA?)

The rosters are not the latest. Miami has Lebron and the Knick have Amare' but Ariza is still on the Rockets.

There is a championship mode which is fun for single player action and they have some unique challenges they call "Re-Mix", but the heart of the game

is just playing with one to three other friends.

This is classic Midway video game. If you have played NBA Jam or NFL Blitz you know the rules, who ever is in last place, they will have the advantage (ala Mario Kart).

This is done so every game is close, it is a fun challenge to try to put someone down by 20.

The computer cheats big time, but there are some tricks you can do to keep the CPU at bay.

The game has some fun rewards that you will earn when playing, for example if your player scores all the points you get a ball hog award.

I have tried most the teams.

I found the surprise player is Arenas on Washington.

So basically, if you are looking for a more arcade like basketball game that is not a sim like NBA 2K11, this might be for you.

If you want something to compete with your friends that will have you all screaming, yelling and insulting each other, this is it.

But if you want a deep single player type game, I would pass on this.

Try NBA Street. It has more to it.

Update: OK, the single player is more fun than I thought.

I am addicted to unlocking every player....

The campaign mode tasks you with beating every team, there are boss battles after

every few matches. This is one way you unlock the legends from the fist NBA Jam (Arcade Version).

For example you have to challenge Spud Webb and Dominique Wilkens or go to Golden State and take on Chris Mullins andTim Hardaway.

If you beat them, you can play them in the multi-player.

Also, it you pull off certain tasks like 10 blocks in a game and such you will unlock more legends.

These Legends are added to the rosters of the respective teams they played for.

So Worthy is now available with Kobe, Lamar and Pau.

i haven't gotten to the main boss battle which looks to be Magic and Bird on the same team.

The hardest team to beat on Hard Mode has been Orlando. Dwight blocks everything and he and Vince Carter dunk really hard.

It is hard to block them.

I have been using Arenas and Minute Bol as my tandem.

If you liked the original NBA Jam back in the rip roarin' 90's, you can stop reading here. Just go and buy the game.

If you're on the fence, here's the low down on the game.

If you're expecting something deep like what you seeing in the 2K or NBA Live series, you probably won't like this game.

If you're not a fan of arcade sports games, don't bother buying it.

But if you like simple & mindless arcade fun, this game is for your. Much like the original NBA Jam, this game is basically is 2 on 2 basketball. I won't go into detail about the rules & nuances, but you pretty much just do insane dunks, ridiculous flying elbows and pushoffs and crazy 3-pointers back and forth until someone wins the game. There are no fouls, and you can also opt to turn goaltending off. With every big score comes some crazy 1-liners from the game's (somewhat famous if you played the original) announcer.

From a gamer point of view, if you like your sports games rough, fast and fun then NBA Jam is for you. If you're looking for realism, look elsewhere, you won't find it here.

The game plays extremely well, and the graphics are fancy. Basically you can now have an NBA JAM arcade deck in your home now thanks to this game. From a fun point of view, this game rocks house. Virtually anybody can pick up and play this game, which is wonderful.

My only small gripes are that:

1) They took away the injury aspect of the game. I liked how in the old NBA Jam you take into account injuries to a player. Considering I play like a jerk and stop at nothing to shove people, I used to like seeing how badly I could KO someone like Scottie Pippen back in the old game and force the AI to replace him in the 2nd half. You can't do that here, and that sort of eliminates the incentive of changing lineups during halftime.

2) The game really isn't worth $50 bucks. I got it dirt cheap thanks to a store discount, so that's why I got it. But frankly I think you should wait for the price to come down before purchasing this game.

3) The lineups get old ... like now that Orlando made that big trade, you really wish you could move Gilbert Arenas to the Magic et al. I wish you could move ppl around.

But those are minor gripes. In the end, I think the game is really fun and retains the fast paced spirit of the original NBA JAM. Just wait for the price to go down before you buy.

I wanted to love this game but it is missing so much, that much of the fun factor has been taken out.

There is NO TAG MODE. This means that you can never control the other player on your team. Makes for clumsy controls.

No HOT SPOTS. I liked the SNES version with hot spots but this doesn't have the option.

PROS:

The announcer is solid but he uses the BOOM SHAKA LAKA to death. A couple of other entertaining quotes though.

The new break the backboard challenge. This is where you square off and the first team to execute a number of dunks to beak the other team's backboard.

OVERALL Not worth . $20 tops. Skip it.

If you are looking for a fun sports game then be sure to check out NBA Jam for the Xbox 360! I started playing NBA Jam at the arcades back in the '90s and was a huge fan. I also owned copies of NBA Jam and NBA Jam Tournament Edition for the Sega Genesis and played those a ton too back in the day.

This new version of NBA Jam for the Xbox 360 has totally met my expectations and then some!

It took me a couple of games to get good with the new control layout. It can be frustrating at first but I guess no more than a lot of other games out there. My kids (ages 7 and 10) were frustrated too when they started playing but I told them to stick with it and now they are playing great.

The online play has been fun. It's not without some glitches but it works almost all of the time and each game only takes 12 mins to play so even if there is an error it is not like you waste a bunch of time.

And speaking of 12 minutes per game, that's one of the things that makes NBA Jam so much better than a lot of games out there where you have to devote hours to each session. I like the fact that I can come home from work and play a few games, make some progress on my campaign, and then shut it down. No need to set aside hours for this game.

I agree fully that playing against human opponents is the most fun. What others have written here is certainly true. But I find that playing the CPU is a lot too and trying to unlock all the accomplishments and secret players will keep me happy for many hours to come.

Review of Contra III: The Alien Wars

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
Contra III: The Alien Wars was really one of the first games that really showed people what the Super Nintendo was capable of. Released in 1992, this classic is now available on the Nintendo Wii's virtual console for 800 Wii Points (eight dollars respectively). It's a short game, but it's fairly addictive and easy to get into.

The Red Falcon is trying to take over the world, and the only two people who can stop this even alien menace are Bill (the blue guy) and Lance (the red guy). Contra has NEVER been about story. It's always been about gameplay. No matter how you look at it, and Contra III is divine.

The gameplay has been brought to new heights since the NES versions. You've got guns, super bombs you can use and to make things even better, you're able to carry two guns and switch between them on the fly, and even use both at the same time. Graphically it was one of the first SNES games to have a stylish look, and showed us just how much you could really put on the screen at any one time. The environments are decorative, the explosions look good, and the bosses are still some of the most detailed the Super Nintendo ever had.

Contra has always been known for its difficulty, and Contra III is no exception. Old fans of Contra, of course, remember the classic Konami cheat. It doesn't work in Contra III, but to compensate there are difficulty levels and you can choose to start off with more lives. Of course hardcore fans will go through the game on Hard Mode with the default 3 lives. If you thought the first two Contra games were hard, you haven't seen anything until you've played through Contra III on hard mode.

The only real drawback to the game is that it's pretty short. It's only six stages long and the levels themselves aren't really that long. It's got a ton of replay value to its credit, however, and fans will probably be dying to go through the game without getting hit once. So it has some good replay value at least. The only other drawback to the game, for Virtual Console, users is simply that while the Virtual Console version supports the Gamecube Controller, it's almost impossible to use, unless you want to find out just what ways your fingers can bend. A Super Nintendo game was no designed to be played with a Gamecube controller. So those downloading on Nintendo Wii's virtual console, keep in mind that without a Classic Controller, gameplay will be next to impossible.

Contra III is arguably the best one in the series, with the Sega Genesis version Hard Corp competing for this position. Both are strong games, and both were probably the last good Contra games to ever be released. Any fan of Run and Gun shooters will absolutely love this game.

The Super NES is my personal favorite Nintendo system mainly for its large list of great games. When it first came out, it automatically had great games to start off with, which normally a system doesn't bring in the good batch until a few months later. This game, Contra III: The Alien Wars, is among the first batch of Super NES to be released into the market. And how did this game turn out? Nothing short than a gaming masterpiece.

THE GOOD

Contra brings back the elements of the original games, such as the "one hit equals death" aspect that many dislike, infinite ammunition and the variety of guns, and good ol' fashioned beatdown that can either be taken solo or you can bash your enemies with a friend in its two-player mode. In addition to this, you have the ability to "switch" weapons using the L and R buttons and when you hold onto both, you fire each weapon simultaneously (you can have two different or identical weapons at a time). In fact, if you wanted to keep the weapon, you can always select the other one in case. Also, the graphics are quite good for the time period, but really, if you're a true gamer you could care less.

The difficulty is a major point for me in the Contra series because the enemies keep coming at you and then at the end of each stage, you fight a humongous boss. Pure gaming bliss.

THE BAD

Find something wrong with this game usually causes fatality. If you think the lack of save points is a drawback, you're just a [....].

OVERALL

This game is among the elite entries in the Super NES's library. THIS IS A MUST HAVE. If you dislike this game and think that it's bad, you are wrong.

Best Deals for Contra III: The Alien Wars

You are a soldier in a futuristic year where aliens have appeared (from under the Earth) to take over the world while destroying it in the process. This game has said to be one of the most difficult ever, because of the exciting challenge in seven levels and the fact that if anything touches you, your dead! The gameplay is very good and offers several forms of gameplay from side scrolling platform shoot-em up action to overhead play against waves of soldiers, aliens and insects. You start off in a large US city with side scrolling, and then go onto the highways with an overhead view and work your way to the desert with a hidden alien structure deep in the Earth. There are tons of nice weapons, spread guns, homing missiles, lasers, flame throwers and more. The graphics and sound are amazing and each enemy is very detailed and overall challenging. The only downfall is that dying over and over again may get very annoying. 2 player similtaneous game.

Honest reviews on Contra III: The Alien Wars

After two highly successful and ridiculously fun games on the NES, Konami brought Contra to the Super Nintendo. And wow did they do an incredible job. Contra III is my favorite SNES game and one of the best games for the system. It took everything that Contra did and just improved on it.

The graphics look great. The explosion effects, the gunfire, the levels, and even the backgrounds all look fantastic, even for a 16-bit system. The enemies are varied and well-designed, especially the bosses. Konami has always been extremely creative when it comes to the Contra bosses and they definitely topped themselves this time around. My personal favorite has always been the boss from Stage 1, the Beast Kimkoh. The sound effects and music are top-notch as well. Each level has its own catchy soundtrack and it just makes the entire experience more enjoyable.

All the classic weapons are back: the machine gun, the fire gun, the laser gun, and of course, the spread gun. I personally think it's all over once I get the spread gun. An interesting change is that you automatically start with a machine gun instead of a single shot rifle like in Contra and Super C. New weapons include the homing gun, which shoots enemy-seeking missiles, and the crush gun, which shoots standard rockets. There's also the return of the barrier shield and the grenades that kill everything onscreen. Vehicles are a big part of the game as well, and only add more diversity to the gameplay

The gameplay is fast-paced, intense, and extremely tough. As usual, one hit = death and you are bound to get hit without some practice. The controls are wonderful; tight, responsive, and easy to pick up and use. You can shoot in nearly any direction you want to with almost no effort. A new and particularly awesome feature is that you can hold L and R and press the fire button to shoot both your guns randomly in all directions as you jump and spin in the air. This is very effective in dealing with the endless onslaught of enemies and it looks really cool!

Is there anything wrong with this game? No. People say the game is short, but when you beat it, all you want to do is beat it again. Somehow Contra III manages to never get boring. And that's the game's strongest point: the replayability. You can sit down for five minutes, go gung-ho and just blast everything in sight or strategically take your time, plan your attack and try to beat the game. Either way works perfectly and is equally fun.

So all in all, the game is perfect in every regard: it's fun, challenging, highly-polished, and original. Contra III is a must-own if you have a Super Nintendo.

Konami was one of the SNES's biggest supporters for the console back in the early '90s. They had such a presence during the NES's glory days and it only intensified later on. In 1992, they continued one of the company's best known franchises by releasing Contra III: The Alien Wars and it looked and played so well, they could have released it in the arcades and people would line up to play. They pulled out all the stops and kept the series' legendrary difficulty level intact to make sure it hit hard on the SNES.

Contra III sees the return of the heroes from the previous two entries as they once again stick their necks out to save the world from Red Falcon. Yes, the nemesis of the Contra series returns once again and this time his army of aliens and deformed creatures are bigger and meaner than ever. It's a straight shoot 'em up action game where you will explore 6 stages. You can choose your difficulty level from easy to hard as well as how many lives you want to start out with and configure your controller buttons. Each stage is littered with enemies and the infamous power ups like the Spread gun, the Laser and the Machine Gun. This time around, you can wield two different guns at the time and switch them back and forth on the fly. The more enemies you shoot, the more points you rack and eventually you earn extra lies (you'll need them too.) If the action gets too intense, grab a friend for the 2 player co op mode to double your chances of beating the game.

The PROS: This game looked amazing back then and it still holds up to the test of time. Contra III uses every bit of processing power from the SNES to deliver the best graphics the series has seen up to that point. The music rocks and gets you pumped to shoot enemies and destroy everything in sight. The sound effects and controls are spot on. You will not have a problem controlling your character or hearing how each gun sounds different from each other and shooting enemies and blowing up the boss characters sounds like sweet music to your ears. The 2 player co op mode means you can always get another person to play with you, doubling the fun you can have with this game.

The CONS: Compared to the previous two entries, this one is a somewhat, shorter game so it might disappoint some gamers. Contra III is manageable on both the easy and normal modes. But in order to see the game's ending sequence, you had to play it on hard mode and it is brutally hard. If you can't take an intense challenge, stay away from the hard mode. Grown men have tried and were left to console themselves and even to this date, I haven't legitimately beaten the game. So you have been warned.

Contra fans have already plowed through this game and very few of them have finished it on the hard difficulty level without cheating. Many will tell you that the series hit a very high point when this one came out and they are right. So for those who want to see what this game is about and are not afraid of having their game skills pushed to the limit, track down a copy of this game ASAP. You can also download this title for the Wii from their Virtual Console Service for 800 points (US $8.00) It's a game like no other from a series like no other. I highly recommend it.
