Initially I gave this game a lower overall rating due to the fact that there seemed to be very little different from DW Empires. However there are differences. Blaring differences namely, you are able to see how the polices you pick decide what happens and doesn't happen on the battlefield. You get to mirco manage your rise to the Shogunate and rule over Japan. You can pick all the classic characters such as Nobunaga Oda, Kotaro Fuma and of course Hattori Hanzo, you also get to create your own character. The innovation of the Formation option Goose, Ring, Arrow, Serpent, Wheel, to give your general and armies an advantage (or disadvantage) on the battlefield. Overall this game is a must have for Koei fans.

ive played DW empires 5 also but this one seems to be more fun cause unlike DW's empires u actually can see what your policies do instead of just using them and wandering y they're even there. Also u can create your own character with also makes this game even more awesome

This game is pretty cool. I bought it with the assumption that it was SW2, just with strategy added on, but it is not, and that's okay. The board game isn't on this version, and the battles are on a smaller scale. However, if you know the basis of the Empires games, then you know the battles are not the main element. The other thing that is different in this version of SW2 is that there is an officer creator, which is awesome. Recommended for strategists. Not recommended for people who sit around ALL day and play video games, because it could get boring if played too often.

Honest reviews on Samurai Warriors 2: Empires - Xbox 360

I've played just about every Dynasty Warriors game that is on the major consoles. Each time they decide to create an Empires version, I wonder whether or not they will rely heavily on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series or whether they'll just throw in a few strategy elements that can be selected and experienced in between battles or not.

Well, even considering DW6 Empires, I think that Samurai Warriors 2 Empires does it best of all of them.

The biggest reason for this is the difficulty level of the game matches yours and exceeds yours to a point and allows for some pretty intense battles. You are required to get cards and choose actions that will benefit your troops and each of your generals in battles. You must strategically places your best generals in the right spot so that if you are attacked or you are attacking that you have half a chance during the battle. Selecting support troop types can help against stronger forces and the morale of your forces and the enemies REALLY makes a difference.

There are even formations that can help your attack or defense and other attributes. of course, the enemy can apply formations as well which can seriously turn the tide of the battle in their favor if used against the correct formation as well.

Supply chains affect which bases you are allowed to attack as well so as to avoid you running to the enemy's main base at the start of every battle. Lose a base along that chain that cuts off your route to the main base and you must run back to take it.

To assist this, you can tell certain generals to hold their position, to attack a particular base, to defend a particular base, or to follow and assist you. REAL IN GAME STRATEGY. Few games to date incorporate HALF of this strategy in action games which is why this one is leagues beyond most.

Love this game. Wish DW7Empires ( or even just the original games) would incorporate these elements.

Bought this recently for under $15 and i have to say at that price and for what you get it is an exceptional value. I only have one other Koei warriors game for my 360 and that's Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires. I prefer Samurai Warriors 2 slightly more cause there is more of a strategy element to it, or basically a bit more things to do outside of the hack 'n slash action part(which i'm not a fan of). I hope Koei throws us old-schoolers a bone and makes an all out strategy-heavy sim along the lines of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games found on PS2 and Super Nintendo back in the day, but Samurai Warriors 2 comes close.

Koei strategy fans and Dynasty/samurai/orochi/bladestorm/kessen fans know what to expect. For others looking in cause the game is dirt cheap...

You might like it if:

* you are somewhat interested in Japanese characters/culture/history(Nobunaga, Toyotomi, Tokugawa, Kenshin, Takeda, etc). I love the Shogun: Total War pc game(sequel on the way!) so it was great to see these characters come to life here. Same with seeing the Three Kingdoms characters come to life in the Dynasty Warriors games(Taishi Ci, Zhao Yun, Xiahou Dun, Lu Bu, etc).

* you don't mind turn-based strategy while looking at a static map screen of Japan

* you REALLY enjoy hack 'n slash action games(i don't, but i put up with it)

* you can forgive the not so great-graphics(in its defense it does have nice cinema scenes, smooth action, and good over-the-top art style)

* you enjoy the extras like the archives section with galleries, cards, the custom characters, historical notes, etc that can really draw you into the game

Until a full-fledged Three Kingdoms game comes out along the lines of #2 on the Super Nintendo, Samurai Warriors 2 comes close to capturing that spirit. For me anyways. Recommended.
