I've seen some people mercilessly blast this game, especially pros--people who work for IGN.com or gamespot, etc. Well, I'm here to say that this game isn't all that bad, if you take it at face value and don't expect the moon.

However, I will say that the graphics are nothing special, the camera angles will frustruate you (especially around tight places and corners), and the characters are as flat as can be--in fact, the game might as well have just one playable main character, because the five of them seem like they can be five aspects of the same person. And the music--oh the music! Although every area of the city has different background music, they are all nothing more than 25-second loops that get tiresome very quickly, especially the downtown street music. I eventually found myself turning down the music volume to zero.

The system of recruiting the city's some 100+ thugs onto your side--sometimes through negotiation and other times through beating their brains in and forcing them to become your lackeys--seemed a little gimmicky: there really is no reason to have so many recruitable characters because you'll soon start to notice that there are only five or six different types of fighters (kickboxer, martial artist, grappler, weapon master, etc). Also, some characters have unique skills like lock-picking, pickpocketing, and stealing cars which adds an additional layer to the game but ultimately is not deep enough to hold your interest.

Also there is a glitch in the game which causes the vibration feature of your controller to be activated constantly. In the game you can carry a maximum of 200 items and/or weapons at once, and when I reached this number and got to a certain point in Chapter 6, my controller started vibrating and would not stop. I discovered the source of this glitch almost by accident. Needless to say I sold some items I didn't need, and the glitch went away. The problem is that there is no way for you to keep track of how many items and/or weapons you have simply by looking at your menus; you MUST go to a store and choose the "sell possessions" option to be able to see how much stuff you currently have. This can get quite annoying, so you should always sell stuff you don't absolutely need.

On the plus side: I found the voice acting to be quite adequate (what little of it there was), and by adequate I mean it was good enough to keep me from wanting to cut off my ears. The fighting engine is surprisingly robust, and it is indeed the meat of the game. When you get into a horizontal view 1-on-1 fight, it almost feels like you're playing Street Fighter 2 again. Each character has an ample list of moves that are relatively easy to execute, and you can learn more as the game progresses. Being able to dress your character in different outfits was a nice touch (although it's very disturbing to give one of the guys a mini skirt). You'll actually find that there is a surprising number of clothes, tattoos, and plastic surgery options that you can unlock by interrogating the right people.

And the game's smooth, streamlined interface you use to buy/sell/change clothes is what GTA San Andreas should have had. Remember the time-consuming interface in GTA where CJ goes into the closet, puts on the shirt you want, and comes back out and poses? Am I the only one who hated that system? In this game, you can change clothes in a tenth of the time. That's one thing this game actually does BETTER than GTA.

Capcom obviously did not give the developing team a very large budget, which is regrettable because this game had a chance to shine in a market that is slowly becoming cluttered with all the GTA clones (True Crime, Total Overdose, The Warriors, etc). Only if the developers had more to work with, because--don't laugh--they were on to something here.

this is a very, very vulgar game for minors that are standing by watching, but its great for adult gamers!

The loading on this game is frustrating to the point that I am so gettting rid of this game after 30 minutes of loading screens. It loads even if you walk a little outside of the city boundaries which are not that far and then you got to wait for cut scenes. Even to figh someone in the street you got to wait for it to load. How could Capcom approve of this crappy game its beyond me. Is not even good if someone gave it to me for free. Stick with Urban Reign, better graphics, storyline, less loading times and overall fun.

This is like millions of other fighting games (Def Jam Fight for NY, etc) on the market, with a few slight variations in the story line.

Pick from 1 of 5 characters.

Long story short: You're framed by the very own mob family you work for... There's a traitor amongst you. Recruit other gangs. Get to the bottom of the story, find the traitor, make a name for yourself and seek revenge.

Don't particular care for the pan and scan style of the camera direction, as you're attempting to move about the different parts of the city.

The lack of user friendly system, when you're attempting to changes the look of your character leaves something to be desired for.

The fighting system and style is classic Capcom.

The graphics are up to par.

And that's about it...

I pre-ordered this game on the strength of its demo, and I have not played the first game. So I'm approaching it from scratch. As a fan of strategy games, I like the idea a lot, and it's a fairly elegant combination of base management and tactical turn-based combat. Here's some pros and cons from my point of view:

Pro's:

Customization: Of course lots of games have character creators these days to let you customize, but it's nice to scale that up to allow customization to every one of your soldiers. You can name your soldiers after your friends, celebrities, historical figures... whatever you want. Then you can do your best to make them look the part, probably not something everyone does, but I find I'm more attached to soldiers I've customized and thus more careful with them. (Though I still don't get why character creators have about 30 facial hair options without a single handle-bar mustache option, what gives?)

Balance: Squad balance becomes very important as the game goes on. I generally end up with a sniper, a medic, a heavy and three assault troops. But playing with other configurations can be fun. My all sniper missions generally met with less success than my all drone missions, but there was fun to be had.

Panic!!: This is the main strategic factor that helps you determine where to put your satellites, and which missions to do when there's a choice. I like this a lot, and really it's the only thing that gives the game replay value. The way panic situation plays out will determine which countries fund you as the game goes on, this determines how large a welfare check you get at the start of the month (You are given money once per month, based on which countries are actively funding you), how many scientists and engineers you have, etc. I also like that the choices aren't always easy. Say you've got very high panic level in South Africa, then they give you a mission where you get to choose to help France, China or Nigeria. France and China may be higher panic than Nigeria, and none of these choices are going to help South Africa directly, but if you don't pick Nigeria then panic goes up in EVERY African country... which may push South Africa over the edge.

Cons:

Bugs: I hate docking for bugs because there's every possibility that these will be fixed by the time you're considering buying the game, but for now there are some bugs. I'm not talking about RNG-rage where you sit there and say "oh that is BS!" as one of your soldiers dies (though that definitely does happen). As other reviewers have noted, cover is sometimes bugged at this time. A perfect example is a situation where you have a soldier in cover, and across from you there is an enemy in cover, with no-man's-land between. The helpful icon on the screen shows a solid red alien face icon, which means you can shoot at an alien but they are in cover (reducing your chance to hit and crit). So, to make your attack more effective, you charge the alien, get behind his cover and wait to see that alien icon turn yellow (indicating you can shoot an alien who is not behind cover from your angle of attack) Well sometimes that just doesn't happen, there's nothing covering the alien, but he still gets the defensive bonus, your attack maybe hits him but he lives, next turn he shoots your now exposed soldier, crits and you're writing a letter home to explain to Mrs. Dash that aunt Jemima was killed in combat (Sometimes i named soldiers while hungry)... it's frustrating. There are other bugs that don't let you click on mission devices to use them. I've only had one crash, not a huge deal as it autosaves each turn.

Repetition: In terms of mission type, we've only got 5: 1)Kill all aliens, 2)Extract VIP, 3)Defuse bomb, 4)Rescue Civilians, 5)Clear UFO/Base (Which is really a glorified 'kill all aliens' but 5 sounds a lot better than 4. Nothing really wrong with that, and arguably there's just not a way to make more creative mission type. First playthrough, I ended up doing about 60 missions, that got pretty tedious.

Inventory System: I know, anytime someone starts griping about inventory it just seems whiny, but there are legitimate issues here, especially late game. By the end of the game you will probably have a lot of soldiers you use. By this point you will have ranked up a lot of soldiers and you may rotate some in/out of the squad based on the mission and their individual specialties. But high end equipment gets expensive, so you'll want to share armor and such. You may find yourself in a situation where you have to play a game called find-the-titan-armor. This is where you have to clear a soldier from your squad, add another soldier in his or her place, and see if they're wearing your very expensive late game armor (so you can have them take it off and put it instead on whoever you wanted to bring along). It shouldn't work like this, it should just be that all of your equipment across all of your soldiers is selectable when equipping a squad. Captain Crunch isn't coming on the mission, so I don't need him wandering around the base with my plasma rifle that could be used by Colonel Sanders on this mission.

Panic!!!: I'm not talking about the country panic level described above, I'm talking about panic within the tactical-turn-based part of the game. Sometimes, when fighting horrible alien things that shake your faith in everything you've been raised to believe, you get a little scared... this is understandable. But I just think this mechanic is poorly executed, basically, when things go wrong in the game, sometimes your soldiers will panic. When panicked, they will perform a random action and be useless for a turn. That random action may be a harmless 'hunker down', it may be a friendly-fire incident that crits and kills your sniper named Wesley Snipes, or it may even be a random lucky shot that kills the alien that made your soldier panic in the first place. I just think the idea of a super-elite-multi-national-fighting-squad is inconsistent with someone panicking at the first appearance of zerglings... I mean, really? I know it's terrifying... but we all played starcraft, time to man up

Thus we have my review. I do enjoy the game, and I've put 70ish hours into it already, but the flaws are enough to make it a frustrating experience sometimes.

The X-Com series dates back to the early 90's -I still remember the hours I spent on X-COM: UFO Defense... In fact, the game is considered by many to be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) strategy games ever developed. With the randomly generated maps -concept of fog of war and line of sight -getting shot at from nowhere -permanent death -and that fantastically good music that so fit the mood of the game, it's no wonder many still play it, almost 20 years after it was released.

There's been many efforts to remake/redo the game, with how far computers have come since then, but no big game companies decided to take it on, until now, and I do believe I'm in good company when I say that Firaxis really have a winner on their hands...

First the box -this is the special edition version, so you get the artwork book and a nice insignia thing. I appreciated the artwork book, especially when they showed some of the original designs and the updated ones -it's really amazing to see how far things have come from the early 90s, in terms of the capabilities of computers. Poster was nice too but that's all just fluff to me. If you're downloading it, be prepared to wait: there's 2 DVDs in the box, so that's around 13-14 GBs of data. Well worth it.

There's already tons of reviews and videos out there about the gameplay, so I'll stick with some lesser known ones, for some pros and cons:

PROS:

I really like the addition of new mission types -the original only had terror, crashed UFOs, landed UFOs, and alien bases. The new ones adds VIP retrieval, bomb disarming, and I believe one other one (turns out its target extraction there's a difference between it and VIP -usually, in target extraction, whoever you save actually joins your team). This helps to shake things up, as the old one tended to get repetitive, especially once you researched heavy plasma. Shoot down UFO, send in soldiers, blast away those pathetic alien scum with some heavy plasma, clean up: wash, rinse, repeat. Now, things can still get tense -even late in the game.

The soundtrack really stands out to me. Music really has an ability to heighten moments and situations, if done correctly. The original did an amazing job of capturing the creepiness and emotion that danger really could be behind every corner -and they did it again. Major props to whoever did the sound/music on this one.

Multiplayer: this one your mileage may vary with. Me personally it's nice to sometimes play as the aliens. It's also pretty interesting to see how others react in a given situation (some choose to barge, some choose to flank, some choose a decoy, some choose stealth) -everyone reacts differently. It's also nice to know I'm not the only one who accidentally dashes instead of just moving to get a better shot.

Medikit: thank you for allowing me to heal the soldier who carries the medkit. If anyone remembers the original, it was a PAIN to have to heal your guys. Had to be facing them -couldn't heal yourself (had to drop it (throw it) have someone else pick it up, then use it. Make sure you don't run out of time units. Ridiculous) It gets a whole lot simpler now. Thank you 2K.

CONS:

They took out base defense. This really annoyed me. In the original, depending on the difficulty and how well you were doing, the aliens would send ships to take out your base(s). It was a cool way to see your base from the battle mode, and it was an interesting way of keeping you on your toes. They took it out in this one, which disappoints me somewhat. Hopefully they might bring it back...

Soldiers can't kneel (goin prone would've nice to add). This sucks. Cover is a big part of the game don't use cover, and you're pretty much goin to die. In the original however, you could also kneel (while not in cover), which not only made it harder for you to hit, but increased your own soldier's accuracy. They got rid of that ability in this game, which really bugs me. Why can't I kneel while not in cover? Why can't I go prone -that would've been nice to add... Maybe it's just me though.

Stunning: this wouldn't be so bad, if it wasn't critical to the game. But it is. In the original, eventually you would research Stun Bomb/Stun Launcher, which made stunning the required aliens a whole lot easier. They took that away. The ONLY weapon to stun with is a close ranged one. You can research to increase its range but it only goes from like 2 to 4. Plus its a hefty cost. This makes stunning a heck of a lot harder. Plus a bunch of the aliens you have to stun have to be injured before they can even GET stunned. What the heck?? Basically -it becomes impossible. Be prepared to lose a bunch of guys just because of stunning.

Those are really the two biggest gripes I have -pretty amazing, considering the game they remade. Guaranteed game of the year right here -this game will certainly be responsible for me not getting sleep, and that not just becau... you hear that??

Someone there???...

UPDATE (10/12/2012) -finished the game, and it really is quite good. I can definitely see indicators of a sequel coming out... I edited my list above, most good, a few bad. But it really is quite an excellent game. And challenging dang Impossible mode...

Best Deals for XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Hello Commander, and welcome to XCOM: Enemy Unknown

This is a game I have been following very closely for months after I learned of its development. I have very fond memories of the original game which I had until now still pulled out and played every couple of years for old times sake.

So how is this newest iteration? In short, it's pretty good and a lot of fun. Easily the best turn-based game of the year.

Now, I'm going to write this review in comparison to the original game that any 'old time' gamer has likely played as it was massively popular during its prime. The biggest mistake people who have not followed the development of the game make is assuming this is just an HD remake of the original. It isn't. It's a re-imaging, which means they took the concept and made their own game around it. Same world, most of the same aliens, a lot of the same weapons, but implemented in a new way.

All of the old mission types are still in this game, with the exception of one which is base defense. In its place there are a few new mission types: Bomb Disposal, VIP Escort, and Abduction. The ending is also different, there is no Cydonia, but I won't spoil it for you.

Bomb Disposal you have 3 turns to reach the bomb and disarm it before it blows, but there are power nodes scattered on the map that each one you reach will give you an extra turn.

VIP Escort you either have to find the VIP, then bring them back to the Skyranger or you start at the VIP and must fight your way back. As the VIP moves across the field, new aliens will jump in and must be killed immediately or there is a good chance the VIP will die.

Abduction missions are a simple deathmatch (kill all aliens) but ... they come at you three at once and you can only choose one to complete. This game is all about forcing you to make hard decisions. Each mission offers a different reward (§200, 4 Engineers, 4 Scientists, or a veteran soldier). Another factor is world wide panic, completing an abduction mission will reduce panic in that country, while the other two will increase in panic (along with the continents they are on). More on panic later, and also decisions.

Combat:

The 'Battlescape' is where combat takes place, you field a squad of 4-6 troops for each mission. Fans of the old game may cringe that this is half, or less than half, but they make up for it in that each troop has a class. Assault (up close and personal), Heavy (rockets and machine gun), Support (medic/buffer), and Sniper (Long Range). Every class has a skill tree so you can customize how they specialize. The trees are not all that deep, only two choices at most ranks, with Squaddie and Major only offering one choice (their signature abilities).

So does that mean your guys are super soldiers instead of easily one shot killed fodder? Nope... While they can do far more than the original game soldiers, they will still die fairly easily to mistakes. Combat in this game is heavily cover based, while the original game had no cover. No cover? None at all, it had concealment and there is a difference.

Geoscape:

This is now referred to by the developers and the community as the ant farm, and is a cross section view of your base as the main screen, while in the original game the main screen was the globe. Here you manage your base, manage your soldiers, manage aircraft, manage research, and manage manufacturing.

While you only have one base, you do have 4 other interceptor bases that you need to station fighters in to protect your satellites. Satellites are your radar, they are needed to detect UFOs. So, in the old game you build new bases to expand radar coverage and get interceptors in range. In the new game you build satellites to expand coverage and assign interceptors to continents to protect them as the aliens can, and will, attempt to destroy your satellites. Satellites are VERY expensive and take a long time to build, protect them with your life. The loss of a satellite will instantly max out panic for that country, and increase panic for the entire continent. It is VERY bad news.

Intercepting UFOs is a little different, instead of choosing how close you want to get you instead can use one time use items to boost your aim, dodge, or time to intercept. You will not get these immediately but must research and build them. You can only send a single interceptor at a time, unlike the original game which let you send multiple ships for larger UFOs. Honestly, this part of the game feels under developed, they could have done a lot more with this.

Money is extremely tight in this game, and there is no way to 'game' the system like in the old game and build up a manufacturing powerhouse that can fund itself even if the funding nations pull out. You will need every funding country you can get! This forces you to make a choice of what to build because you will never have enough money for it all until late game. And you are so limited you pretty much only get a single choice per game month in the early stages. Choose well!

The ant farm is also where you manage panic levels. Each country has a panic meter, and if it is full at the end of a game month that country will leave the council. Loose 8 countries and it is game over, this is the only way to lose the game. There are many ways panic can rise or fall. I'll talk a little more on this in the next section on difficulty. In short though, panic will rise faster than it falls and satellites are necessary to have any sort of control.

Difficulty:

The game comes with 4 modes: Easy, Normal, Classic, and Impossible. In addition you can enable an optional setting called "Ironman" which will not allow you to make custom save files, you only get a single auto-save. In Ironman Mode there is no undo button when you make a mistake, you must live with your choices good or bad. You can still quit the game and load up your save, you just can't hit the reload button if you get your squad killed.

Easy and Normal are both frankly fairly easy. You'll be punished for mistakes in Normal, but the game scales itself back big time with a dumber AI and limiting the number of aliens you will fight at any give time. If you stumble upon too many, it will have a group fall back into the fog of war.

Classic however is a real kick in the pants. It was played up as for experts of the original game ... but even so you will get dominated most likely. The difference between Normal and Classic is massive. Not only do enemies have a little more health (you would be surprised how much a single hit point can change things), but the AI is fully unlocked, there is no limit to the number of aliens that will attack you, and they have better aim and critical chance. You may very well learn to fear the simple Thin Man alien that has insane aim and crit chance. Your troops are more likely to panic as well. The loss of a veteran squad of troops can very well mean the loss of the entire game as your rookies will be hard pressed to survive without anyone to support them. Honestly, this game is far harder than the original game.

The other challenge with Classic/Impossible is managing panic. On these upper difficulty settings panic rises faster from failed missions and abduction missions. You will likely lose some, probably a lot of them, and the best you can hope for is not losing more than 7 before you finish the game. That said, on Classic it is possible to save them all, but this partially depends on luck for where Abduction missions occur. It is speculated that on Impossible it literally is not possible to keep panic low enough to play forever, the only way to win is to finish the games objectives before too many countries bail on you. The 'strategy layer' (Geoscape/ant farm) may very well prove to be far more difficult for you than the tactical game.

For you X-COM vets out there, swallow your pride if Classic kicks your butt, and give Normal a go until you learn the new games mechanics. I know I had to.

Graphics and Sound:

The game uses the Unreal engine, so graphics are on par with that. I think they're pretty decent, but they will not blow you away. The music and sound effects are both good, you still get that creepy feeling as you hear aliens moving around in the dark wondering if they'll wander onto your guys while they're all out of ammo or if you have another turn to reload before you find them.

PC requirements for the game are fairly low so most should be able to play it if they have anything about the integrated HD graphics that comes with the intel i series (i3, i5, i7).

Controls:

This may be the only sore spot for PC players, the interface isn't the best and clearly was designed around console controllers. You can change key bindings, but until you learn the interface it can be a little frustrating. The use of a gamepad is fully supported (and probably easier to play with).

Multiplayer:

I can't speak on this as I have not played it. What I know though is there is only a Deathmatch mode, no co-op or objective based multiplayer. A game is set up with a set 'point' pool and a time limit for turns. You then 'buy' units with your points. If you would rather, you can set points to be unlimited and make the best squad possible (of course your opponent will do the same). You can use both humans and aliens in a mixed squad, or go all human or all alien. For humans you can customize their gear and select a perk package. The perks are not individually selectable.

Play Time:

The play time for this game is fairly short for a strategy game. Around 15-20 hours of so for an Easy/Normal playthrough if you keep trucking along and don't reload your game every time something bad happens. For Classic, add 5-10 hours. You may say this is short in relation to the old game, but keep in mind that people have beat the old game in under 10 minutes. The times I give are for a fairly complete game, it's possible to finish it faster, and it is also possible to keep playing for as long as you like (provided you can keep panic under control).

Conclusion:

The game is pretty solid. The game does have its fair share of bugs. There has been one patch so far, but it only fixed a few issues known before the game came out. I have in my 52 hours of playtime encountered one game stopping bug. I was able to recover from it, but not without some cost to my game. The bug involved my interceptors and I was forced to dismiss all of mine from one of my bases which resulted in a UFO getting missed and a satellite destroyed, ouch! You may or may not want to hold off doing Ironman (mine was) until some patches if you want to play it safe.

Be careful of a lot of false rumors out there, for example IGN was unhappy that aliens were all static and didn't patrol around. Well, I can account personally on how false that statement is. They can and do patrol! Depends a lot on the mission type you are one. Some groups are static (don't move) while others are dynamic (they patrol). The council missions are all static (VIP and Bomb), while Terror missions are all dynamic. The others are a mix of the two.

The game is highly rated, and it deserves it in my opinion. This is a game I will continue to play many times as I try to at least beat Classic Ironman, if not Impossible.

Steam is required no matter what PC version you get (digital or physical) so be aware of that. It employs a one time online activation, after which you can put steam into offline mode and continue to play. You may install it as many times as you want, on as many computers as you want. Of course, you can only play on one at a time.

Good Luck Commander!

Honest reviews on XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Like many reviewers here, I was a huge fan of the original 1994 XCOM game. It was truly lightyears ahead of its time and just the perfect culmination of sci-fi storytelling and thousands of finely-tuned gameplay design decisions that just made the game so much fun and immersive. It took months off my life and contributed to some poor grades in high school and college. 2K had very high expectations to live up to and for the most part, the reboot is successful. I'm glad for that because it could've gone horribly wrong and become a giant letdown (ahem.. Duke Nukem). It brings the graphics and gameplay into the 21st century (Unreal Engine) while retaining the spirit and vision of the original. Overall, it is worthy of the tremendous legacy that is XCOM while standing on its own two feet as its own unique experience. By no means perfect (because of some awful bugs and the removal of several key gameplay aspects), but still very much fun and I've already lost 3-4 hours of sleep a night to it since I bought the game.

Because this game was designed primarily for consoles, many many of the interface elements have been severely stripped away or over-simplified. I'll talk mostly about the annoyances because the gameplay and fun stuff you can read about elsewhere. The download is 1.5GB, so be prepared to wait several hours for it (3.5 for me over cable modem). Installation afterwards is very quick however. I ran it on a HP Pavilion dv7-7010us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black). Cranked up to high on all graphics settings, the game was still smooth as silk.

What I didn't like is the first level tutorial which I didn't know was skippable until reading forums. In it, 3 of your 4 squaddies die. When you start a new game, consider checking off the tutorial box.

Next is the annoying chatter from the NPCs, especially Dr. Vahlen who can't decide if her accent is German, French, or British. The voice actor for her is terrible. This isn't a big deal as it has no effect on gameplay. I just wished they'd gotten a real German person to do the acting.

Movement is confusing in the new XCOM. Both games limit how many squares you can move during your turn. The old one had time units explicitly spelled out as a bar as well as numbers in the HUD, and you can reserve some time units for shooting with a button toggle. The new one just has a segmented arrow indicator. You also can't group select to move all squaddies. Gotta move them one at a time. Sometimes the camera is extremely problematic and defaults to the wrong z-plane (elevation), especially when inside of UFO's. The hull of the UFO will sometimes be cut away (but then dead aliens will still show up floating on the roof). Sometimes not.

I HATE the no inventory system in the new version. You can only have 2 or 3 items which you must assign to backpacks before the mission, forcing you to choose between a medkit, grenades, stun gun, and a scope. In the old one, you had multiple slots and you could fully load out your squaddie with as much as he/she could carry. The penalty, of course, being that this slows down movement (reduces the number of time units available). The old game had ammo clips, adding another layer of strategy to the game, forcing you to budget ammo (take single shot, or multi-shot?) or scavenge. The new game has unlimited ammo, but the reduced inventory is not fun. You can only carry 1 or 2 grenades (if you level up and take the upgrade). That also means you can't pick up items from dead squadmates or aliens like you could in the old game. The ability to pick up spare grenades and alien weaponry at will was a key element of fun in the old game. You could even pick up dead aliens, stuff them in your sack and walk around to build up strength. The new one you can't.

No free-targeting. You MUST have an alien in your line of vision in order to shoot. You can't just shoot whatever you want. This is a severe lack. The old game let you shoot doors, walls and barriers to destroy cover and expose aliens. This one doesn't. While cars catch fire and blow up when aliens shoot at you and miss, you can't return the favor if they're hiding behind cars. You can't shoot cars.

Terrible market mechanics. Periodically, a nation will send equipment requests which reward you with money, scientists, or engineers if you fulfill. The old game let you manufacture and sell equipment to generate a source of income. Enemies very infrequently leave behind intact weapons. When killed, their gun and grenades shatter. WHAT??? But it doesn't matter since, you can't sell weapons.. only alien corpses and UFO parts. But you need these parts to research and build things, and they fetch only 1 or 2 credits each, so there's really no point. So, the items you don't need, like antiquated tech, you can't sell. Go figure. So, there is almost no way to make money in this game, if you are short on funds. You have to wait until the monthly stipend.

Very limited customizability of squaddie appearances. You can change the face, skin color, hair and head shape, but they all pretty much look the same. This is really boring and I had hoped to be able to make some really unique looking squad members. No height, body shape, uniform color. I also don't like the overt nation flags plastered all over the squaddie UI menus or on the backs of their suits. Yes, flags are sewn onto the back of each squaddie's collar!

No concept of friendly-fire. Shots just go through squadmates if they're in the way. In the old one, you could accidentally kill a team member with a stray shot, or if they are in your line of fire. Sometime shots go through walls due to clipping problems.

No ability to hire scientists or engineers. You get them as monthly rewards from nations, missions, or by building the required workshop or laboratory. You can hire soldiers but not scientists or engineers. What?? Not that it really matters. You can only have one base. The original, you could have maybe 6 or 8.. basically a base and interceptors at every major world region.

These are just some of the things that frustrate me and I don't know why Firaxis decided to change these mechanics that worked so well in the original. Don't break what ain't broke.

Worst of all, however, is a bug that renders the game unplayable. Sometimes the HUD completely disappears when you're back at base, making it impossible to do anything except quit the game and reload. SAVE OFTEN! On several occasions, after returning from a mission, I found that all my squad members had turned into men. Somehow, their appearances all got changed to the same character model (same face, hair, etc). Reloading solved it. Two of my squaddies are permanently wounded and unusable until Firaxis fixes this bug.

Graphics are as good as I expected, with some weirdly Halo-looking weapons and monster designs (Brutes... erm... I mean mega-mutons.) Maps all look the same, regardless of what country. Firaxis claims to have several hundred hand-crafted maps, but I'm on my second play through and I see the same maps again and again. The VIP extractions are the same map every restart.

I do like that saving and loading is very quick. Overall, there's not a whole lot of load time and most of it's hidden with transitional animation or a narrated briefing. Bewilderingly, Firaxis decided to make F10 quick save and F11 fullscreen/windowed toggle. You will hit this F11 many many times by accident, I assure you. It may sound harsh or overly longwinded to list out all the flaws, but really this is a fun game, and would've been vastly more superior had they not made these changes. I doubt that Firaxis will change any of the gameplay mechanics with a software update, but a guy can hope.

I've finished the single player campaign. I abandoned my first game because I progressed too far towards the endgame goal too fast, following the mission objectives. It feels really short and very rushed. The tech tree is super short. I ran out of things to research very quickly. The old one, tech research was a BIG BIG DEAL and it took forever researching multiple branches in order to unlock all the dependencies of creating a new weapon, vehicle, or item. I liked this challenge. In the remake it's a breeze. They made it even easier with research credits that you earn by capturing live aliens. They half your time. So most of my things took 2-4 days to research.

In sum, still a fun game, but owing to the console pedigree, many of the things that made XCOM fun are dumbed down. Console games typically target 40 hours of gameplay, so I think that is to blame for most of the negative impact of these design decisions. There's no real reason to play the game again, as there are no unlockables of any kind.

[PC Version]

TL;DR

For X-COM fans this is a respectable re-release of the original (as opposed to a sequel) and worth the money. I rate it somewhere between 3.5 to 4.0 stars this is definitely not 5.0 star material (even as a fan). I would rate the original 80's game as 4.3 to 4.8 (for relative comparison to this). Most of the penalty comes from the lack of base defense, one-base-only setup, and annoying storyline.

Unfamiliar with X-Com? This rendition is a friendly and addictive *turn-based* strategy. It's worth trying (demo available on Steam) before you lay down the cash.

------

For the X-COM veterans:

+Most of the game is a modernized re-release of X-Com UFO defence (sp). This is not a sequel so relax ;)

+The X-COM "feel" is still there many core mechanics are present (definitely not all)

+Typical X-COM "Awww @#$^ you gotta be kidding me" situations. You know, the ill-timed alien grenade that lands right after the LZ. The ethereal "chain mind @$^%" stuff is gone. I know, I miss it too (Psionics is still in the game)

+New mechanics that genuinely add to gameplay (grappling suits, suppression fire, cloaking, soldier specialties, country-specific bonuses, etc.)

+Mostly bug-free no significant issues with the initial release (do a bios update with AMD FX CPU if you crash)

+Added difficulty/challenge strategic dilemma quests. Saving one country often leads to the loss of another. Perfect, clean games are a little harder to pull off early on.

-"Consolfied". Dumbed down for console play, increased pricing. This includes overly simplified controls, dated graphics/sound. Not a problem if you're playing on a console, naturally.

-Omitted/missing core game mechanics. Removed crouch/kneel, base defense, multiple bases. The worst aspects are the removal of multiple bases & base defense. The time unit system is still present per se, its just been simplified.

-Some minor bugs with Nvidia PC graphics. Clipping, flashing, and other anomalies (Nvidia). If you played the 80's game this is no real issue. Probably fixable with a patch (running latest Nvidia driver as of 10/10/12).

-Collision and line of sight issues. Firing through walls (not as a piercing wall shot. Difficult sometimes to mouse target a different elevation for movement (texture flashes, target location ends up being for the lower elevation, etc)

-Annoying dialogue and upfront storyline. The "UFOpaedia" feel isn't there. The original encyclopaedia-type story line was more enjoyable with its subtlety.

-----

I was a big fan of the original and even liked Apocalypse (the rest ranged from okay to just plain bad). 5 stars is a disservice to other buyers as much as 1-2 stars. Where it falls between 2.5 to 4.4 stars depends on you of course. Fans of turn-based strategy and the original X-COM will probably lean towards 4. Enjoy!

I dug out SW:BF1 the week before SW:BF2 released and played it for a day or so just to remind myself of the general gameplay. Others have already listed pros, cons, and recommendations; let me add to their lists rather than duplicate them:

PROS:

-You get to (a) dogfight in space and (b) play as a Jedi or other 'hero' character (e.g., Boba Fett), all within the context of a given mission.

-The "Rise of the Empire" campaign is well thought out, if a bit dark (e.g., you get to assassinate the Queen of Naboo; I'm just grateful you don't have to kill the 'younglings' in the Jedi Temple).

-The overall gameplay is great, with larger and more complex environments.

CONS (all relatively minor):

--The Options/Controls panel is a pain to use (as when setting up a joystick). Someone needs to improve the UI design and general behavior on this; it strikes me as being somewhat 'quick and dirty.'

--The shift to story/objective mode moves SW:BF2 towards the classic problems of a 'railroad' game, namely, you have to figure out how the designers intended you to complete the objectives and in what order. For example, in the Kashyyyk: First Line of Defense mission, I tried to destroy the CIS cruiser heavy turrets before I destroyed the enemy frigates, but SW:BF2 wouldn't let me.

--Each mission has a number of sub-objectives, and there is no way to save a game within a mission. In other words, if you get to the very last mission task and die, you have to start the entire mission all over again.

--There are a few glitches here and there. For example, in that same mission, SW:BF2 seemed to have a hard time figuring out when the other clone troopers should follow me over to the CIS cruiser.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

-First, get a joystick. It's a lot easier to do the space combat with one, though you'll have to take some time to set up the controls (under Options).

-Second, if you don't have a lot of spare time, get the strategy guide. It doesn't have all the answers, but it does give you a heads up as to the overall flow of the mission.

-Third, experiment. I've been able to solve specific objectives more than one way.

As of this writing [Nov 9], I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the Rise of the Empire campaign (I've completed 11 of 18 missions). I'll update my review once I've finished it and have had time to play in Galactic Conquest mode as well. ..bruce..

Following up the smash success of Star Wars Battlefront was no easy task. When you are the best selling Star Wars themed game in history, the bar is set very high as fan expectations for part 2 were lofty. Thankfully the designers at Pandemic Studios were more than up to the task. The game is Star Wars Battlefront II and like the original as well as Battlefield, 2 Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam, players take on the role of soldiers who must battle on various maps for control of strategic points in order to obtain total victory. Unlike the previously mentioned games, Battlefront thankfully does not have many of the issues of the previous Battlefield games such as excessively long load times, difficult controls, and numerous bugs and instabilities directly out of the box.

In solo play mode; players can take on campaigns from the classic as well as the prequel series as they battle a myriad of A.I. opponents while the work with an A.I. teammates. There is a great campaign mode where players play as a member of the Elite 501st Squadron of Clone troopers as you battle in the deciding conflicts of the Clone Wars. The multiplay campaigns offers new maps from Prequel locales ranging from the opening space battle above Coruscant to Jabba's palace. Fans will rejoice in the detail level of the game from the Rancor in the palace down to the frozen Han Solo on the wall in the previously mentioned palace. There is also a map of the Tantive IV which allows players to play in Princess Leia's ship from the first Star Wars film and recreate the opening of the film in a grand scale.

As before, players not only attempt to eliminate enemy players, but they attempt to defend and seize key command points situated throughout the map. What is a nice plus is that by earning Hero Point for good play, players can play as Han Solo, Obi Wan Kenobi, Dath Maul, Darth Vader, and many more. When playing as a hero, players move faster, can withstand more damage, and can dish out quite a bit as well. Unlike tradition shooters, Battlefront 2 can be played in either first or third person perspective and immerses you into the action in a unique perspective. Unlike the previous game, Space battles have been added to the mix and it is a very welcome addition. In the original game, I could fly X-wing and T.I.E. fighters in support of ground based battle. In Battlefront 2, I was able to play as part of a squadron in battles against other fighters and capitol ships. The twist is that each capitol ship has hard point targets such as weapons or communication arrays which have to be destroyed as part of the mission. Players can also land their fighters in the hangers of enemy capitol ships and battle on foot to destroy strategic segment of the enemy ship from within. If flying is not your strong point, you can man a gun turret on the fighter or capitol ship, or skip flying altogether and be a ground defender. It is such variety that really makes this game enjoyable as the options as well as the variety of ships to fly makes this a real treat. As in the original, players select a side such as Rebel, Republic, Imperial, or Separatist, and then from a class within. For example, there are various types of Clone troopers each with their own unique weapons and abilities. When you die in a mission, players are able to select from a different class to find one that is best suited to the changing missions and player preferences. It is also interesting to note that local and NPC characters such as Jawas, Gamoreans, and others inhabit the map.

Multiplay fans will be delighted with the abundant number of servers that are available to play and I noted that the players were not only very friendly, but were willing to help new players learn the ropes such as how to get around the maps and watching your back. Logging in, I was able to find numerous games all with varying styles and maps. The connection times were very good and lag was not much of an issue in the games I played to prepare this article.

The vast variety of weapons, units, and character classes ensures that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will have great replay value. Multiplay mode allows players not only to pick their unit but also to take up arms for either side be it Rebel or Imperial, Separatist or Republic depending on the map being played. The menu and controls of the game are very easy to navigate and use and I have been unable to find any real issues with the game other than a need for a better save system for the solo play missions.

Graphically the game is very impressive as the rich landscapes from the films are well rendered and the detail level is amazing. What really made the game for me was the sound effects that were taken directly from the films as staring down an opposing tank is one thing but to hear the trademark whine of the laser fire is a Star Wars fan come true even if it is the last thing your players hears before hitting the ground with a loud thud. A true classic and one that will provide endless hours of casual and diehard fans alike, Battlefront 2 is a winner and one of the nicest surprises of the year.

Best Deals for Star Wars Battlefront II

Short, sweet, simple: Battlefront II is a BLAST!

Battlefront I is and always will be a classic for it's day, but at times the gamer would fly vehicles around on ground-based maps, with one eye on the ground, and their other eye, heart and mind on what lies beyond the atmosphere. In Battlefront I, you may have noticed the lack of a good plot or story, as the basic scheme concerned battle after battle for fun and points. How could Pandemic and LucasArts make Battlefront II any better, but to go above and beyond the call of duty to make the sequel worthy of attention?

Simple. You flesh out, increase, rebuild, glorify, enhance, expand, re-imagine, recondition, and make land & space reachable.

The second installment for the Star Wars: Battlefront series is absolutely beautiful. If you purchase one Star Wars game along with your DVD copy of Episode III, this is a must have!

Live the chaotic and blaster infested army battles you dream of conquering, leap into the air in a dazzling somersault only to finish off your landing with a Force push to the enemy and lightsaber slash to the chest, jump into the cockpit of a Tie-Bomber and scream from the belly of an Imperial Destroyer...land in a Rebel Frigate and take the battle to the belly of the beast, maneuver your A-wing in a twisting corkscrew-reverse maneuver to break enemy lock and return fire down your enemies throat, and live moments as characters from the Star Wars Galaxy like Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Jango Fett, Yoda...and the list goes on. Battlefront 2 is AWESOME!

The good:

1) Galactic space battles & dogfights

2) New worlds to explore

3) New characters & the ability to play classic characters

4) Incredible supply of vehicles to operate

5) Beautiful graphics and design, almost movie quality

6) Play in 1st or 3rd person

7) Online play for up to 64 players

8) This list could go on and on...

The bad:

1) Not much!

2) Lack of a "cockpit" view for spaceships

3) Prone position is no longer available for crawling

4) Difficult to find partners or buddies in battle

*The PC version is amazing. Expect further patches and upgrades to make this the ULTIMATE experience.

THIS COULD & SHOULD BE THE GAME OF THE YEAR FOR 2005!

Honest reviews on Star Wars Battlefront II

A fun game with hours of playtime, 2 different single player games, and several different online games, this game does have its pros and cons...

Pros: Slightly better graphics than Battlefront 1. Better cut scenes and a better stroy line.

You get to control Jedi's.

Space battles, you can fly almost every space cruiser you've seen on the movies.

Cons: One level, Yavin 4 is timed and is near impossible to pass. There are no cheats for the PC version as there are for other consoles, so a trainer program may be needed to help out.

Jedi control... After playing Star Wars Jedi Academy, I'm really disappointed. Many of the Jedi's are 'handicapped' and move slow. You're extremely limited in Jedi Powers, and you just don't get the moves that Jedi Academy gives.

Overall: The game is worth your money... several options, and several games. If you're into Jedi action, look into Jedi Academy.

this was truly a great game! it was one of the best games I have ever played, and was THE BEST shooter I have ever played. It's gameplay was easy and it is one of those games you can just pick up and learn to play in a few minutes, though it takes a couple of rounds to become familiar with the game, and space battles can be just a bit tricky.

PROS)

This game is compatible on probably any computer with windows. I have a 3 year old dell dimension 4600 that is even a bit slow on empire earth, and this game ran fine. In fact, it ran more than fine, loading a battle took about 8 seconds, which is VERY fast for my computer. So, you don't have to have a gaming computer for this game to work well

I like shooters, but first person (you can set it to third or first) shooters usually have missions where you're on your own, or with a few dumb marines, defeating waves of enemies (most of the time they're aliens)... BUT this game's missions were basically conquest modes (where you must take over enemy spawn points) where you had to destroy specific things and capture certain things (you also have like 32 people on your team)

The jedi were fun, with tons of different abilities, the other heroes who weren't jedi were good too

The space battles were very fun, with different classes of ships and frigates and central systems to bomb

There were tons of maps, each unique. For example, kashyyyk (that's right three y's) is much bigger than tantive IV. Each map also had unique features, such as the death star's bridge consoles you had to repair, and kashyyyk's wooden barricade. Teaser: The general favorites are hoth, geonosis, and mos eisley.

There were tons of vechicles, probably over 20, a few of them unique to a certain map. For instance, the ATTE is only found on geonosis and the ATAT and snowspeeders are only found on hoth. (I might add that the ATAT is extremely fun, who wouldn't enjoy driving an 100 foot tall behemoth that shoots huge lasers and bombs that send rebels flying)

I really like the feature of being able to repair things with your fusion cutter. When you are an engineer, you can repair any of your vechicles, health and ammo droids, and other various repairable features on the map, such as turrets and consoles that retract bridges or pull up gates(for example)Hint: you can also use your fusion cutter to slice into vechicles

CONS) please note that these are very small "bugs" and barely effect the GREATNESS of this game

The AI set on easy are too easy (they'll stop shooting at you and look at their surroundings when you're 3 feet away armed with a rocket launcher), and when you are on hard the AI in the area seem to aim precisely for you. I think there should've been a medium setting where the AI are smart, but act like normal soldiers and hit the easiest targets. This may seem like a big con, but until you beat the campaign you probably need the easy, and when you're experienced and are looking for a challenge, the hard setting is great

The story mode isn't very much of a story (while it is very fun) you can do almost the same exact things in instant action. There's no taking 5 smart clones and taking over a command point, its just a conquest battle, but you have certain objectives, like "take out those turrets soldier!" The campaign is still fun thoug, and you should play it to get to know the game and most of the maps

The graphics are very good, but not what I'd call amazing, which is fine with me, but for the more "hard core" gamer, they might not be enough. BUT!!! their is a HUGE PRO in this, this game will work easily on computers that arent very advanced or new, and it loads fast!

OVERALL:

This is a great game, and I am only a bit bored with it, after having played it probably 5/7 days a week for thes past 5 months. Playing online almost never gets old, but I suggest you beat the campaign and play on most of the instant action levels before you make those seem bad by playing with real people.

YOU SHOULD GET THIS GAME IF:

-you are a first person shooter (or just shooter) game fan, you will almost definitely like this

-you are a star wars fan you'll probably like it, and you'll like doing missions and fighting battles from the movies

-you are a videogame fan, and have played a few shooters and liked them, you'll probably like this

-you are a shooter fan, but are looking for a game with a good story and unique missions, you probably shouldn't get this game because the campaign isn't great

-you are a shooter fan (halo fans welcome) and like star wars (this is me) TWO WORDS-GET IT

Item exactly as described, and then some. Was very pleased with the quality from the minute I opened the box.

The mod function does A LOT. it has ten modes and you can add on a bunch of different sub modes. The ten modes of rapid fire are more than enough because you can program them all. Plus with the extra sub modes this modded controller is capable of so much. in all id estimate there are thousands of combinations of mods and modes.

Jump shot , drop shot, quick scope, everything works great. I play gears too and the perfect active reload helps a ton. in all I saw a huge performance boost after using this controller.

The trigger stops are really good too. they definitely help and are easy to get used to. also the metal thumb sticks grip real nice. everything about it is awesome. bullet buttons I haven't gotten used to yet since the tops are flat but they are responsive. im thinking of putting on regular buttons.

The controller arrived on time and worked flawlessly out of the box. More surprising was the company aftercare, since they on their own initiative contacted me to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase and offered to address concerns in the event I had one. Actually first time, that someone contacted me to make sure I was happy with product. Would highly recommend this product and I can't wait for one to come out for Xbox One. I highly recommend.

I will start with the obvious, the game looks beautiful. The graphical

quality does not change between cutscenes and gameplay. Kojima and his team pulled out all the stops on the beauty of this game, as they have always striven to do.

SPOILER ALERT

Then there is the story. A lot of people harp on the Metal Gear Series because the story is full of twists. One person even said that the plot was twists and only twists. That person missed the point completely. Especially by the end of this game, it becomes apparent what Kojima had been pushing for. The message about humanity is clear... the MGS series has always been anti-war, anti-genetic determinism, anti-environmental determinism, every mistake that humanity has ever made with regards to war and control of the populous has been addressed in some way. Consider the history through which Kojima derives his inspiration. His home country of Japan experienced an apocalypse during WWII while causing an apocalypse in mainland Asia at the same time.

In all situations of war no matter who begins the fight or where it starts or ends, the young will repeat the mistakes of the old, and the old will let the knowledge gained from their mistakes slip away with death. Even the most heinous actions, deception, murder, are a means to an end, and the end is all that really matters.

SPOILERS OVER

Gameplay was spectacular. The MGS franchise is one of very few that has made significant gameplay improvements with every subsequent release. Control of Snake feels much more fluid, yet at the same time you can feel his age in the way he performs. Though he is more agile and powerful than the average human could ever be, he isn't quite the same old Snake. He is THE Old Snake.

Old Snake gets a lot of neat toys in this game, too. Most notably is his chameleon suit. If he lays flat, his suit will automatically adopt the pattern of the materials that are on the floor. By pressing the "triangle" button while up against a wall, he will adopt those coverings as well.

The second great toy is Drebin's shop. Drebin is a weapons launderer who gives Old Snake full access to replacement ammo and other supplies. ID Locked weapons can be converted to old-world weapons that do not require nanomachine permissions. There are A LOT of weapons in this game. First time through you probably won't get to experience all of them, and that is okay. Just check them out on your next run. The game is only about 10-15 hours long depending on how you choose to play. Also, through Drebin's shop Old Snake can modify his weapon. The first weapon, the M4 Custom is a good all-purpose weapon. It packs a decent punch and holds 30 rounds. It can be modded with a shotgun attachment, grenade launcher, or foregrip for stability. Laser sights and scopes can also be added to the M4 and other select weapons. So play around and have fun.

Toy #3 is the Metal Gear Mark II, Hal's minature Metal Gear Rex that is mostly harmless...mostly. When you need a buddy to turn the corner and remain unseen for you, Mark II can cast an invisibility cloak and make sure the coast is clear. If things get sticky, it has a shock wire function to incapacitate unsuspecting foes. The same tool can be used to knock on surfaces to distract your enemies and guide them away from Old Snake's true position. It is a neat little gadget that you may or may not find to be useful.

Next up, the enemies. In this game, it is impossible to hate the enemies you fight (except for Vamp) because they are amazing, flat-out. Whether they are GECKOS (bipedal beast machines), FROGS (all-female supersoldiers), or Private Military Company militia-men (remnants of their humanity will keep you grounded), or the Beauty and the Beast Corps (best enemies in of all time in videogames?), enemies are not just targets. Kojima and his crew made the enemies in this game characters to be admired. They neither have names nor faces, but they will f*** your day up very quickly if you do not respect their power. From the top down, they are all capable killers.

The humanity of this game lies within Snake's allies. Meryl, Eva, Hal, the Colonel, Mae Ling, Raiden, Rosemary, Naomi, and especially Sunny represent the other side of life. Old Snake is a manufactured product of war, the only life he has ever known. No machine can imitate or destroy the compassion that these individuals shared. This is passion. I won't go on, can't explain much else without major spoilers.

Gameplay, people, visuals, this game is stunning. Metal Gear Sold 4 exemplifies why videogames deserve to be celebrated as art. It has the story worthy of novel publishing, breath-taking visuals, engrossing music, and an all-around realism that we celebrate in paintings such as the Mona Lisa. If only more videogame producers put this much time and effort into a game. Production for perfection... long hours, perspiration, and inspiration to produce the culmination of one's efforts... that is art... this is art.

If you are a casual gamer, this is not for you. If you have never played the other MGS games, this is probably not for you. Play through MGS1-3 in order to get the story and gameplay straight, and then play MGS4.

For everyone who has been trying to compare this game to COD and HALO...come on. MGS4 is not a pure shooter. They put it nice and bold on the cover, "Tactical Espionage Action". That means be sneaky and use force only as needed. Play a "shooter" and judge other shooters with it. MGS4 is NOT, I repeat, is NOT a shooter.

Could this go down as one of the best games of all time? Absolutely. Game of the Year? For sure. It is in a league of its own. Nothing else plays like it. Few other games are as engrossed in the mystique of political/sci-fi conspiracy. Too few have such dedicated stories. In most games, the producer's passion is not as apparent. MGS4 had a 105 degree fever with Kojima's ardor for gaming perfection. The game feels like he and his team cared.

Hideo Kojima has done it again. MGS4 is the most detailed, convincing, and well-researched game I have ever played. It offers a compelling and imaginative glimpse into the future of high-tech warfare, a nuanced, intelligent storyline, vastly improved gameplay, and incredible graphics.

The metal gear franchise has always pushed the boundaries of what a game could be, and challenged the preconceptions of the audience. MGS4 starts out with, of all things, a short live action film about marine fauna. The in-game store discounts weapons (in real time) on wednesdays and sundays. These are just a few examples, but there are many more. The story has both the philosophical and political musings as well as the bizarre humor and one of a kind characters that fans expect.

The gameplay is more open and the action is more intense than in prior games. The environments seem much bigger and are bustling with npcs engaged in building to building warfare. Snake can join either side in the conflict or ignore them and sneak by. He has a ton of new weapons and gadgets as well.

The graphics are among the most impressive I have seen in a game. The characters are solid physical presences with subtle, lifelike facial expressions. The mechs move with an animal grace and hunt with a keen intelligence that belies their artificial construction.

Overall, the game is an experience that should not be missed by anyone with a PS3. If you don't already own a PS3, this game alone would justify its purchase. It is by far the most creative, original, and technically polished game to appear on the system to date.

Before I start... I do my fair share of gaming, but I'am by no means a very obsessive gamer. So I never really knew about Metal Gear Solid until I bought this game. I'm a huge fan of first person shooter games like COD, Resistance, etc. So I saw the ads and thought it was another military type shooting game so I went out and spent the $59.99 and got the game. I put the game into the PS3 and after about an 8 minute wait (becasue the game is so amazing that it needs time to load some stuff on to the PS, but you still need the disk to play the game!) the game started and I was completely blown away. I have played some really good games in my time and on many systems, but this has, by far, been THE best game that I have palyed on ANY system before. The quick down low on this game... the graphics... I give a 10/10. The detailing of the all the characters, the details on the machinery and the surroundings, it was awesome. The thing that made is so spectacular was the fact that the developers did put so much attention to the details that they did a very good job of simulating real life as best as possible. Another big pet peeve of mine is the acting of the characters in the game. I feel like it plays a big part in the gaming experience and people don't give it much credit. So for the acting another 10/10: the character voices fit the characters, and the voice acting was done superbly. The animation was also done extremely well, my only fuss about the animation is that you can't really read how the character is feeling by looking at thier face: the pretty much always put on the same face... but no game has ever done that really well either so I looked over that fact. Finally for game play I give 9/10. I give it such a "low" rating because quite frankly this game is a bit tough to get accustomed to (all though once you do... you're pretty much ready to kick some MAJOR BUTT). I guess a more crazy gamer would have managed to get all the controls down quickly... but for me it took me a while to figure out how to use all the controls. At first the menu that shows all your items, weapons, and an array of other things was very difficult to figure out. Once you got past that you had to actaully figure out how to use the items, weapons, etc. It took me the longest time to figure out how to use Med-packs... but that could also be due to my inabilities :-p. So basically thats why the gameplay is 9/10... overall its just a confusing interface to get used to, but once you do it gets very fun. Also the interactions in the game is awesome. Like the bad guys can figure out when you are there just by bascially seeing you (obviously), hearing you (also obvious), and smelling you (Yea... thats a new one on me too). So its really fun trying to sneak around all the levels w/o getting spotted... but fear not my first person shooter fans... there are thrills here for you too... if the baddies spot you, you're gonna' be pulling out some very nifty guns to shoot them: my fav. is the p90. Just before I end here, if you don't know about the Metal Gear Series (like myself) you won't really know what's going on in the game. In that sense it really sucks because you're just shooting and sneaking around w/o really knowing what's happening. The developers just assumed that you played previous versions so they just build on the stories of the last one's so you miss out a lot of the stories and things like that. But, I went on Wiki and basically read the story like a book so I was all set! And lastly (I promise this time) the game does feel like its more of a movie with some player interaction becasue the cut scenes are ridiculously long... so if you are'nt a cut scene type of person... you might not like this game. As for me.... I loved it!!!So basically this game is wicked fun and if you haven't bought it yet... you HAVE TO!!!!!

Honest reviews on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

This is the first truly next-gen game to grace either console (PS3/360, the Wii is different). The sheer detail and feature sets are amazing. It's a singleplayer game with the benefit of multiplayer, unlike many games which are the reverse. This is crucial, as many modern games trend toward the opposite. The graphics are, to put it less than eloquently, "HAWT." Controls are fluid and very deep (the sheer volume of actions/interactions is staggering). This is a STORY-DRIVEN game, someting that this generation of games is often lacking imo. I haven't seen this much emphasis on this all-too crucial aspect since Lost Odyssey. The soundtrack is at times haunting and always appropriate, really accentuating the experience. The campaign is lengthy and rich. Warning, if you're not a fan of excessive cutscenes, you may be put off by MGS4 (although you CAN skip them). I for one love the game for this reason. There are so many little details that cater to the player's enjoyment, such as the ability to play music in-game on your virtual ipod, the songs and extras scattered here and there, and the inside humor. Even if you're unfamiliar with the series (I have experience only with the first Metal Gear Solid game) it's definitely worth a purchase. This is a system-seller plain and simple. Every gamer who calls themself as such should own it. The first truly next-gen does not disappoint. Snakes last dance must be experienced.

Pros:

+Very satisfying story

+Incredible voice work

+Incredible cinematics

+Eagle eye attention to detail

+A lot of gameplay elements

+Memorable Music Soundtrack

Cons:

-Long cutscenes. To the point where you feel more like you're watching than playing. This goes a long way as you'll play for five seconds to be treated to cutscenes several minutes long

-Some load times are really annoying

-The Camera can sometimes be a pain

After three and a half long years of waiting, Metal Gear Solid 4 finally drops down on the Playstation 3. With a lot of questions to answer and some mighty big shoes to fill, Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily one of the most anticipated video games ever made. For the Metal Gear fan, the game is absolutely fantastic. Continuing an already mesmerizing story, Metal Gear Solid 4 proves to be one of this generations greatest games.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the conclusion to Snake's story. The game is told through some gorgeous cutscenes. There's a lot of detail to the characters faces, their actions and it has some fantastic voice acting to boot. You'll want to grab some popcorn, though, because there are definitely a lot of cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4, and some of them are really long. This is easily the biggest problem with Metal Gear Solid 4 and it's one that has often plagued the series. While the cutscenes are very dramatic and well written, and while they even shed some humor, some of them are just too long, some of them seeming almost useless. If a cutscene is getting a little long, though, it would be a grave mistake to skip it as you might miss some important parts of the story. And if there's any Metal Gear Solid game one should be playing for its story, it's this one. The other big problem with the cutscenes is how they come at you, even early on. There are moments where you'll play for a matter of seconds only to be sit through a cutscene that's several minutes long. At the very least, you can pause the game during the cutscenes. However, it's hard to get over the fact that some of them really drag on. When you get to play the game, though, Metal Gear Solid 4 is amazing.

Metal Gear Solid has always been about stealth. The same is true of Guns of the Patriots. The difference being that you're also in the middle of a war and there are two sides fighting against one another, the PMCs and Militia. You're able to help the militia and doing so can have its rewards, such as characters being willing to give you items or being able to go through certain areas more easily. Although, you can also turn the Militia against you.

There have been some improvements to sneaking around, though. The camouflage system has returned but it's much better. Rather than having to go into the menu constantly, Snake's camo will change automatically to blend in with the environment and help him evade enemies. You can also hold up enemies just like before, only this time you can perform body searches while holding them up rather than having to shake them down. You can also restrain them to the ground to knock them out. If you really need to get by an enemy and you're running out of options, you can always play dead. This also works when you get spotted and knocked down by an enemy.

There's also the implementation of the Solid Eye. This is more vital to sneaking around than anything. It works very similar to the radar in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, showing you how much noise you or your enemy is making. Also new to here is the threat ring. The threat ring surrounds Snake at all times and will begin to act up depending on how close an enemy is to him. All of these seem like they'll take forever to get used to, but you'll quickly adapt. Just like previous games in the series, if you're spotted, you'll have to escape from the enemy and hide.

There are also moments where you can take control of a Metal Gear Mk II, a very small version of Metal Gear that is controlled by Snake. This little guy allows Snake to scout out the area ahead. You can also use the Metal Gear Mk II to stun certain enemies.

Lastly, Snake has a psyche gauge. This is very similar to the stamina gauge in Metal Gear Solid 3. The gauge depletes depending on how stressed or exhausted Snake is. You can refill this by eating certain snacks like Rations or Noodles, but you can also refill it by resting for a while. But there are plenty of factors that affect Psyche. For example, if Snake has been in the sun too long, you'll have to move him into the shade. If he's been in cold water, you'll have to get him out of it. As his psyche gauge gets lower it becomes harder for him to perform certain actions, such as being able to aim properly. In other words, from time to time Snake will need to rest. Though there are also certain points in the game where his psyche gauge is restocked automatically.

You won't always be in stealth mode forever, though. There will be times when you have to fight, and the shooting mechanic works much better in Metal Gear Solid 4. When you're thrust into combat, the game plays very similar to a third person shooter. Allowing for more precise aiming and no longer forcing you to go into first person view to land a well placed shot. There's also a weapon shop where you can purchase, upgrade or customize weapons to your liking, another element that works to your liking and gives Metal Gear a lot of customization.

All this variation in gameplay means that Metal Gear Solid 4 has several different ways to approach it. Combine it's various gameplay elements with a selection of difficulty levels to up the challenge, and Metal Gear Solid 4, like the three before it, becomes a game you'll want to replay again and again. Sometimes it's just fun to mess around with your enemies or just to see how else you can go about a certain area.

Visually, Metal Gear Solid 4 is incredible to look at. There's a ton of detail in the environment, and the atmosphere is also a good one. You're very much immersed in the world of Metal Gear Solid 4. There are a couple of load times that can be annoying, especially the installation. The camera, while it's great, can sometimes be a pain. It's easy to control, but sometimes you'll find yourself fighting with it.

Music wise, there's a memorable score to Metal Gear Solid 4. There's a lot of voice work as well. Much of it is great, although at times you will get the feeling that some of the voice actors and over-acting. On the whole, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a beautiful looking, (and sounding) game.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is an amazing experience. If you can handle lengthy cutscenes you'll be satisfied with the final results. If you can handle a couple of annoying load times, you'll be satisfied. The amount of gameplay here is incredible, and the fact that there are so many ways to go about each area is also a lot of fun. For Metal Gear fans, Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily the reason to own a Playstation 3.

I called up my local Target and sure enough they had 3 in stock. They also didn't have a clue what I was talking about, but be patient and be persistent. What was weird is we were shopping at that same target the night before and I didn't notice this offer. I think what threw me was that they stacked these on the bottom shelf; I assume because they are large and hard to hang on traditional hooks so that's how I missed it. I think companies that buy out these items at release date just to resell on Amazon.com at double the price are pretty uncool in my book. I completely understand the concept of collector's pricing, but that shouldn't happen till long after the initial stock in stores has been depleted. Maybe that's entrepreneurialism to some people, but I just think it's a evil way to make a buck.

Got this at Target for $59.99. So the ones you see on here for $100.00, you can get the same thing at Target stores, Last I checked today was unavailable online. Stores should have plenty. I LOVE it! it has ALL 20 discs with the Album, So NO running around to stores trying to find all of them & spending money On mostly doubles. I probably spent $60.00 just on packs. Great Idea they had!

It's a $60 Target Exclusive. A lot cheaper than buying the blind packaging and hoping to get them all. Of course, if your Target is currently out of stock, there are always people online who are nice enough to buy them in bulk from Target and sell them for double the retail price. Or you could go to the Target website. Your choice.

I own every single Sims game, and had owned all of the Sim City series as well. With that said, let's move on to the review of EA's latest product, The Sims 3: World Adventures. I had high anticipation because I am used to the massive amounts of new things we got with the Sims 1 & Sims 2 expansions, which were offered at much lower costs. However, do not let this deter you. While you may not get a ton of new items, you do get adventure as promised. The pros:

1. You do get to travel, and there are goals when you do so. I didn't care for the way the Sims 2: Bon Voyage, didn't really give you a goal. It was go to a new place, relax, stay for a huge amount of time and leave. World Adventures gives you goals, while allowing you to visit various places if you would like. And in time you can buy a vacation home and spend more time there. You have to build up your "visa" to have stays longer than 3 days in each location, and you do this by completing adventures. I had a great time wandering around the maze like tombs, and avoiding torching myself.

2. There are indeed a few more items, and they have country themes. In the past few games we have really only had Asian oriented items; I love decorating the house with flaming chandeliers like the ones seen in the tombs.

3. I have not found all of the new social interactions, but so far there have been about three.

4. Basements! Yes you heard right, you can actually have basements to your house now; not only that but you can build "tombs" under your home.

5. A few new traits and music tastes.

6. Your sim, when they learn a new song, may come home singingwhich I find very cute.

Cons:

1. As with any EA game that just came out, there are glitches. The first time I started up, my sim was no where to be found. The plumbob was deformed and I couldn't preform any actions. I uninstalled it, the problem still remained. So I uninstalled the base game; that fixed that problem. Then I couldn't get skills or buy skill books. This was apparently a conflict between the new patch (that is required it seems.) and game mods and some custom content. I removed by mods and custom content; now the game runs like a charm.

2. The loading time is much longer than with The Sims 3 base game. I have plenty of memory, a new graphics card and plenty of RAM. I am above the required specs with everything, but only slightly. If you are working with the bare minimums or just a little above, it may run a little slower.

3. I have noticed (it may be my computer) that some of the graphics are not as clear, such as a blurry pixelation of my sims eye sockets.

4. Still no memories.

5. Some of the new features have been hard for me to find, such as the collection for photographs (which is a nice new bonus).

6. Toddlers & pregnant women cannot travel. I assume this is because it would be unsafe for them to be caught on fire, but it still stinks leaving them home.

7. Some people have been having a lot more problems, such as the game not loading, codes not working and games not saving. I have personally not had any of these problems.

I will update this as I continue to play; but so far the adventures have made getting the game worth it. I really enjoy having the goals and feeling like I'm achieving something for my sim.

Like many others with The Sims Series... I have been a fan of The Sims since they first came out with "The Sims" and "The Sims 2" And I would expect that with such a money making franchise as The Sims, that EA would NOT do what they have been doing... But they did...

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!! It will destroy anything you have done in The Sims 3 so far and is buggy beyond belief!

If you want to know how I truly feel... Then think about a time you got that feeling in the pit of your stomach, that made you feel sick because you had just been blatantly ripped off or betrayed... That's how I feel!

It is not a VACATION expansion... It is an ADVENTURES "add on" taking a fun non-linear game and making it into a console game where you actually have to go from point a to point b.

It is just downright inhuman what EA does with employees, and how it impacts the finished product.

They constantly lay off hard workers because they are afraid that if anyone works on a game for too long that they may try to leave and start their own company... So EA moves development teams in 6 week to 6 month shifts... Rotating them from project to project... This means that every time they "rotate" the new team has to somehow pick up where the old team left off, relearning and trying to figure out what was going on before the "rotation"... And this creates MAJOR ISSUES. EA also rushes things to release dates even against the development teams wishes to hold off release so they can make a more polished product... EA does not care! They are all about the almighty bottom dollar! So what you get is a half finished, problem causing game, that otherwise would have been wonderful.

Now, onto the MICRO-TRANSACTIONS!!! Not only do you pay for this overpriced, half finished game.... But you will also have to pay to "unlock" items and features that were otherwise already in the game, but hidden, because selling millions of The Sims 3 wasn't enough for EA, they now want to charge you $20 a pop of REAL WORLD MONEY to get 1000 "SIM POINTS" so you can have the matched sets and items and features that should have been in the game in the first place. You can see forum postings and reviews about the REAL COST of The Sims 3 here on amazon.com

This is the FIRST expansion... If you can even call it that, as I see it more as a step backwards. All The Sims games have had expansions that do, in fact, make the base game better and better... Like adding PETS, and a NIGHTLIFE, and actual SEASONS with rain and snow and so on and so forth... The base games also had a great deal of content to begin with, from tons of matched furniture to pools with slides and diving boards, hot tubs, and musical items that you could make your own Sim garage band with... Then enter the Sims 3 with NONE OF THAT STUFF!!!

Then enter The Sims 3 World Adventures, Still not adding anything other than a ONE TIME adventure for your chosen Sims... Yes ONE TIME! Still no vacation... Still no hot tubs... Still no diving boards... Still no pets... No seasons. I can say it was quite fun playing through the new expansion with one of my Sims... But here is one of the many problems... My old towns and Sims have been destroyed with the addition of this expansion... Where my huge town with tons of custom houses and Sims once stood are now blue property sized holes. If that wasn't bad enough... I create a new town and a new Sim household to go on ADVENTURES... I am having some fun exploring and collecting goodies, and enjoying the new themes and whatnot... Until I get bored and decide to try ADVENTURES with a different Sim... This part makes me very angry... Well more angry after losing my Sim town... I CANNOT DO ADVENTURES AGAIN! Yes that is right! Once you go through the tombs and discover everything with one Sim, any other Sims you try to do it with will not get the same bonuses and benefits as the first one! All the paths remain open and revealed, all the doors stay open, all the traps found and disabled, all the ONE TIME ITEMS do not return, including a required item called "Pengu's Axe"... On top of this is a disappearing inventory glitch where every now and then, items in your Sims "backpack" up and delete themselves!

Also, get used to seeing "Error Code 13" and "Error Code 16" when trying to save your games... When this happens, the save game is corrupted and everything you have done has just been destroyed, and you now have to go into the game save directory and HOPE that there is still a working backup copy you can restore with some less that user friendly editing.

I could go on and on about other glitches and bugs, and the fact they have Day One micro transactions on or before the release date of this expansion showing that they are intentionally leaving things out of the game just to make more cash off the people dumb enough to pony forth said cash.

So that means that only ONE SIM HOUSEHOLD and one Sim household ONLY can get the full experience of the adventures... Any others after that just walk through the already explored tombs with nothing to do and nothing that would be considered an actual "Adventure." So unless you want to constantly create whole new towns and start over again just to reset the Adventures... I say leave this game off your holiday gift list... At least until EA pulls their heads out of their donkeys and fixes the glaring issues with this game.

I am 27 years old, I build high end gaming computers, and I have only had to call tech support 7 times in my life... Once 10 years ago for Windows ME, and six times in the last six months! Each of those six times for separate EA games that either didn't work because of something in the game itself, or that relies on some sort of stable connection with ea servers, or was so flawed and buggy that it annoyed me to the point I actually broke down and called them.

As a video game fan, I would rather wait a longer time and PAY MORE for a better, fully polished and finished product, than to have some half done turd that needs a year worth of patches and editing to make even barely playable.

I cannot play The Sims 3 anymore because of this expansion and it's massive glitches and errors, and I am having serious thoughts about Buying ANYTHING from EA ever again!

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT buy this until they have the bugs worked out and it works. It might be a fun game if it would work properly but it doesn't.

I can not just save my game anymore, I have to "Save As" each time and then the game will still sometimes crash while saving. It also randomly crashes just during gameplay. I read on the official forum that this could be due to high FPS so I used my nifty Nvidia V-sync as suggested and nope, it still crashes away many, many times.

There are also reports of TONS of other bugs which I have been lucky enough to not have happen to me yet. Some people report their Sims completely vanishing or of an "evil twin" that shows up when they come back from visiting one of the 3 countries. They also have random spouses and children they never had before. The list goes on and on. Bad, stupid bugs here.

On the positive side, the destinations themselves are gorgeous. However, the adventuring you do there gets so repetitve and boring. I've only had this one day and am already thinking, "How many times do I have to explore tombs to look for stupid loot?"

Honest reviews on The Sims 3: World Adventures Expansion Pack - Mac

I loved the Sims 2 all the way thru. LOVED IT!!!! The only reason I moved to S3 was for promise of virtually no load screens(a real buzz kill back in the land & times of Sims 2) AND for the added enhancements that surely would come of the newest incarnation. I mean the programmers by this point have had lots of practice right? They know after so many S2 expansions what we'd likeNay,what we DEMAND from our Sims game, correct? But sadly that has not turned out to be the case. S3 on it's own I find is terribly boring. No pets, no businesses, no seasons, no college, no nightlife to speak of. Not much going on. Just work and school. Heckthere isn't even a drum set or piano to play. Just a dumb guitar. And when they do have a pianoyou'll probably have to "purchase" it off the ever dominant online "exchange" with your oh-so-fun "sim points". So EA actually just stripped the game down to the barest of essentials, re-packeged it and re-sold. I guess that's fine if you never played S2 and have no knowledge of how intricate and complex that game eventually became. S3 is like starting over from scratch. I know this is a strategic moneymakerstart from the bottom and charge the players to build it back up.

Which brings us then to S3EP1: Sims 3 World adventures (known in another life as Bon Voyage for Sims 2). Quite simply this game blows. Getting past the fact that for some reason EA would have us believe that a "world adventurer" only visits 3 desitnations. Sorry guysbut China, Paris, & Cairo do not make up the "WORLD". So more cities would have been in order before giving the game such a sweeping and worldy title. Next upthe price of the game. Initally retailed at $40 and like a sucker I payed that because as I said I LOVED Sims 2 and desperately hoped for Sims 3 to take it to that next great level. But $40 later my game (which is not terribly fascinating to begin with despite the wonders of jet-setting) is now laden with bugs. It worked perfectly fine, before the mandatory game update which was required prior to completing the install of the EP and its subsequent patch. Seriously EA? You release an update that you immediately have to patch???? Or release a patch that you immediately have to update?!? Either way now my game is almost unusable. The thing crashes to desktop sporadically. One of my families has now disappeared off the face of Sim 3 universe (THANKS ERROR 16!). The aging is botched so that my elderly sims are 90 one day but wake up the next looking younger than their youngest adult offspring. Trying to complete missions whilst on "vacation" is not only not relaxing but sometimes impossible as after completing hours of time on these scavenger hunts they call missionssuddenly the target you need to report back to in order to complete the action is nowhere to be foundEVER. So there went your very short 3 day vacation trying to build up your Visa level. Racing around to complete tasks that ultimately are not able to be finished. Ohand should you make progress, actually somehow get through the journey and then get whisked unceremoniously back to you homelandPerhaps your Sim shows up on the other end safe and sound but they arrive sans the spouse or the children that they ventured off with!!! What the heck? How are Sims being left behind on vacation? Or maybe, just maybe, everyone does actually show up on the other endbut then the game just immediately crashes back to desktop once more so you've lost days upon days of your Sims lives and Hours upon Hours of your ACTUAL life in terms of playing time. Sigh....

Let me mentionmy computer is new. Purchased almost exclusively for Sims 3. 750 Harddrive, 8G Ram. Quad Core. Decent graphics card. Up to date drivers. So it ain't me. This game is broken. I supsect EA knew too it. They MAKE games. That's what they do. They know how to test them so see whether they work or not before releasing it to the public. And It was strategically released in the 4th quarter to gain EA end of yr profits. I totally get it. Holding to fix it would have lost profits. But they released a shoddy product. They really should be ashamed and bending over backwards to fix it. But they aren't. Taking money like thieves in the night and leaving their gaming fans holding a very broken, very irritating expansion in the bag.

Seriously EA?!?! They actually outdone themselves this time.

I just came online after angrily quitting the Sims 3: World Adventures. When I first bought the game it was a nice change to be able to go to different parts of the Sim world. It was a welcomed change. However, that was before I discovered all the glitches and bugs this expansion pack introduced to my Sims 3 game. I deeply regret buying it.

A few things that have gone wrong since I installed it:

If a Sim has been in an area too long (ie Egypt) that sim will out of nowhere have a family located in that area. My sim girl was in Egypt a lot because the mummies and tombs were fun to me. After a while I looked at the family tree and she's somehow already married to an old man and they have a kid together? What the?! I can't break up the marriage so she can't marry anyone ever. (See Picture I Uploaded)

My sim guy "went steady" with a girl from China. When he got home, the girl disappeared so now my guy can't marry anyone because it still shows that he's in a relationship with this girl. I can't reach her by phone or go to China because she vanished.

There is a car stuck outside my sim's homes and I can't do Move Objects On to remove it.

If my Sim asks a foreign sim (from China for example) to get married, the game glitches so that they marry but the Chinese sim doesn't move in. I can keep marrying them but they never move in, it just glitches and sends them flying around the house.

Lastly, the glitch that made me upset the most is that I was in Egypt exploring tombs when all of a sudden the game glitches and nothing, I mean NOTHING, is clickable anymore. I can't use my cell to get out of there, I can't make my sim walk anywhere because not even the floors are clickable. I just said forget it and quit the game.

These glitches have ruined the game for me. It was a big mistake trying out the game with my favorite family. Now they're all messed up and I cant do anything to fix it. This expansion pack was MAJOR FAIL. I advise you NOT to get it and only do so when *everything* is fixed. Save your money until then! The game itself is pretty fun if you're looking to trying new things and introduce new challenges for you and your sim but like I said, it's better to wait until its problems are fixed.

Update 7/14/10: Might I add that since writing this review I've had to restart a new game from scratch 3 times. I'm not sure if it was because I uninstalled World Adventures, or because the Sims 3 game is so full of glitches that crash the game itself but the game won't load up on my laptop anymore. I'm left with two "games" I regret spending money on.
