This expansion is worth it just for the Terrafin character alone. He's a really cool creature in the game. He dives underground, upgrades from fists to brass knuckles, and spawns tiny attack sharks. The extra world is accessed by simply putting the pirate ship on the portal platform. A pirate ship will appear at the dock on the beach and you can take it to the new content at any time. The set comes with a cool special power up accessory called ghost swords. At anytime in the game you can put the ghost swords on the portal and your character will get two giant swords fighting at their side for a limited time. I found these work great for boss battles. Buying the set gives you a cool earth elemental character, a new place to go, and a couple of new powers that add something to the overall game. I think its a good deal, even better if you plan ahead and make Terrafin your ground guy.

Pirate seas is one of two (at the time of this review) available expansion packs for the game Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Starter Pack. While the starter packs must be purchased on a platform-specific basis, the real beauty of the additional game pieces are that they are cross-compatible among all the gaming platforms (Wii, X-Box 360, Playstation, Nintendo 3DS). Since this is the case, you don't need to hunt down a system-specific add-on for the game. This also means that this game is selling out fast! I live in Illinois and most of the stores in the greater Chicago area are nearly completely out-of-stock on these products. On-line outlets are experiencing similar sell-outs. Luckily, the stores I went to in Ohio and Indiana still had product available for purchase! For some reason, this expansion pack has sold better than the other expansion pack, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack Darklight Crypt. There may be some good reason for this, which I'll get to in a moment.I purchased this set for my 9-year old son for Christmas, this year, and he has really enjoyed it. The set comes with four items:
1. Terrafin This is a new Skylander character of the Earth Element that you can use in the game. He looks really cool, both in-game and in-hand, but as far as being a real "power" character? Not so much. Overall, he's pretty "meh" when it comes to his abilities and game-play. I give him a 5/10, performance-wise.
2. The Pirate ship Anyone who's advanced very far into the main game, itself, will already have some experience fighting pirates and sailing in a pirate ship. The pirate levels are early in the game and are some of the most fun! Placing the new pirate ship piece on the portal will open up a new level full of more pirate goodness. Longer and harder than the original pirate levels, this level sets itself apart from others, primarily through implementing many new Original Memory-style card games. My son had a bit of a fit with these. This was not so much because the card games were overly hard, but probably more due to the fact that he was having trouble navigating the spread of cards fast enough to complete all the matches within the set time limit. (Also, he's much more interested in action and fighting than solving puzzles!) I thought the memory games were fun, and didn't mind completing these for him. Overall, the new level was a lot of fun and I give it a 9/10.
3. The Ghost Swords Put these on the portal and you get a pair of phantom swords that dance around you and do a small bit of fighting for you. They don't do a whole lot of damage, and they don't last long, so they really weren't that impressive. Yes, you can keep taking them off and putting them back on to have them keep re-appearing, but for the small benefit they give you, it's really not worth the effort. The swords are the weakest component of the pack and I give them a 3/10.
4. The Treasure chest Put the treasure chest on the portal and it will immediately be placed into the game world a short distance from you. You have to go and find it, as it is buried, but a glowing bullseye on the bottom of the screen lets you know if you are getting closer or farther away, so it doesn't take more than about 40 seconds to find it. Once you open it up, you are rewarded with a few hundred gold credits. Take it off and put it back on again, go on another short treasure hunt, and soon you'll be a few MORE hundred gold credits richer. The benefit of this, obviously, is that you can purchase the character upgrades very rapidly and power up your character just as fast as you want to. While it doesn't level-up the characters (You'll still need experience points earned in battles to do that!), the added benefits of the offensive and defensive upgrades will make the game much easier for players especially those in the younger crowd. Additionally, the upgraded power attacks all come with prettier and more intense visual effects, and who doesn't like those? The treasure chest is the real gem (yes, pun intended) of the pack, as it makes the game much easier and will supply players with all the easily-accumulated gold they want. I give the chest a 10/10!
Overall, this particular expansion is a good buy. It adds plenty of value to the game, while at the same time it makes it easier for players to complete the larger, main game.
Here's a quick tip for you: When using the treasure chest on the "home base" portion of the game, the chest will always appear in one of four or five pre-determined locations. Once you learn exactly where these locations are at, your gold stores will add up very quickly. One of the locations where the chest appears is very close to the fairy-like creature you buy the upgrades from. Wait until you have uncovered the chest in that location before you make your upgrade purchase, as the chest will immediately appear back in that same spot (just a few steps away) after you have purchased the upgrade. This will save you a small amount of time collecting treasure, but it's worth it.
Best Deals for Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Pack - Pirate Seas
I won't say much about the Skylanders game, because if you're already looking at figure sets, you probably already know what the game is all about. I will say that as an adult, I love the game. My wife and I have played through several levels and are hooked. It's a really fun, somewhat easy, relaxing game to play together. This figure set is great. I love sharks, and the shark character is what sold me on it. The pirate ship basically sets you up with a new world to complete objectives in and explore.
I really like this set, and think it's a good addition to a Skylanders collection. The shark figure really does it for me, though.
If you like the game, then this set should be added to your collection sooner rather than later!!
