Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is yet another in a long line of fantastic games. I admit it, I was a HUGE addict of the original Gauntlet, with the Green Archer Needs Food Badly. When Gauntlet came out for the Nintendo, I bought it immediately and played it non stop for hours and hours. I came across G:DL when it was first released and without examining the box much at all, it was MINE. Let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed!
This is the first game we played with more than two people on our Playstation 2 we bought the MultiTap explicitly for this game. It's a blast! And the improvements are astounding. First off, you get up to eight main characters. I have always loved the archer, but I play the others at times too. As you move them up levels, their appearance changes, they get cool familiars, their spells get more powerful, they learn new abilities, they get to heal, and much more.
The levels are both familiar and fascinating. Just wait until you get into the Jester's world! The Escher-like levels are phenomonally fun. Someone really had a good mastery of space to develop those worlds. The other graphics are equally as interesting. The music and monsters all fit well with the worlds.
It's not just hack and slash. There are a lot of puzzles, a lot of what-do-you-use-keys-on, a lot of mazes and memory and combinations involved. There are even hidden characters, additional SECRET characters and other hidden things that it's taken a ton of replaying to get a walkthrough written. The same is completely replayable and is a perfect friends-for-the-afternoon kind of game.
I enthusiastically recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good arcade game!

WOW!!! To say the least. I bought this game on a Thursday. My buddies and I havn't put it down since, and it's a good week later. The single player is fun, especially once you're a raging minotaur. Mine is a 53rd level with only one stat NOT maxed out. A true power house. To those who don't understand what I'm talking about, if you remember the arcade version (Legends), you'd remember the stats: Strength, Magic, Armor, and Speed. It is so rewarding to watch your character level up. I'm at level 53, just WAITING to see what changes at 60. Every ten levels your character will change and grow. At 25 and 50, your magic gains special abilities, like changing junk into gold, or ruined food into good food. These little things make the game so very rewarding. The game is fun 1 player, impossible to put down with 2, and I havn't tried 3 or 4. I'm waiting to buy the multi tap JUST for this game. Well, thats kind of alot said about nothing except that the game is great. As far as the music goes, I am impressed. Some of the sound tracks sound like their straight out of Conan and Red Sonya. Very cool! The game play is the standard hack and slash Gauntlet action. You'll never escape the James Earl Jones of Midway. "Red Minotaur needs food badly.." and the other inspiring things he says. The voice adds a much desired flavor to top and awesome game. The graphics are great and I haven't seen them lag yet. To someone weary to buy a game without trying it, this game is worth the gamble. I bought it on impulse and havn't been let down yet. Hope you enjoy this beautifull addition to the Gauntlet saga.

I've played previous incarnations of Gauntlet and, I'll be the first to admit, you do see alot of Diablo and Baldurs Gate:Dark Alliance in it. Even so, you got to remember that Gauntlet has been around longer than all of them. Unlike those games, Gauntlet doesn't take itself too seriously and that is what makes it such a blast to play. Going from level to level hacking and slashing, figuring out puzzles, and trying to collect everthing you need to progress in the game is way cool. If I had any gripes, it'd have to be with the graphics. Although they were better than any previous Gauntlet released, I still don't think they harnessed the true power of the Playstation2. I think they coulda been alot better than they were. One thing is for sure, though, the graphics didn't look like N64 graphics. They were better than that but they coulda been better. Other than that, Gauntlet:Dark Legacy was awesome. Even better with friends, too. Definitely worth recommending to everyone. This game is fun, fun, fun.
Honest reviews on Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is Midway's update to Gauntlet: Legends. For those unfamiliar with Gauntlet, it's an overhead view, 3D hack and slash action game with a medievil theme. New features include 4 new realms, 4 new main characters, plus repolished graphics and gameplay. Rest assured, this PS2 version is a perfect translation of the arcade game. The designers have made some good decisions in adding helpful hints and tweaks to every aspect of the game. Each character can now perform a more powerful version of their standard attack to ward off stronger enemies, clues to find secret areas are littered across the playing field, and food items added to the shop all make this version of Gauntlet a more enjoyable experience. Even though the gameplay can still become monotonous after a while, there are more incentives than ever included to keep you playing. Lots of secret characters/items are available to search for, and certainly help add replay value. There are still a few graphical and hit detection glitches that could use fixing, but most are minor and don't detract from the gameplay. Dark Legacy isn't quite a true sequel, but I believe enough new features are included to make it worth buying even if you already own Legends.

I grew up on the original Gauntlet on Nintendo. This game is every bit as fun as the original plus it is a more visually stunning than most games I have seen. The cooperative play is great. Players of all skill can play and have a great time. A great change from the shooter games where one expert just dominates. If you are great and your friend is terrible it doesn't matter, you can both play and its still fun. Anybody can play and everyone can have fun. Even my mom enjoyed playing it! That's saying something. The old characters are here and there are some great new ones as well as some cool characters you can unlock througout. The best part is that the game is long. No more of this crap you find today where you buy a game and are finished a week later. This game is great and has a lot of replay value. This is an all around great game and my personal favorite for PS2.
