The game plays well (of course). If you don't know, or are worried, the Guitar Hero Controllers work with Rock Band, so if you already have one (or two) don't fret (ha!). Also, the headset that comes with most Xboxes can work for the vocalist. It's not as satisfying as holding one in your hand, but if you wanna rock on the cheap, it will do.
Now, as for the "Career" section. it is pretty cool to create your rocker and go on tour and grow your fanbase. Especially cool are the "mystery setlists" where you will play multiple songs in a row, and even get a chance to 'take requests'. Not Bad. the collaborative scoring is inventive and it really does pay off to play together and not just as individuals.
The character creation is very satisfying, plenty of options to design a character or two that personify your idea of a rockstar. Getting a chance to see them perform is strangely thrilling, if not very entertaining.
Speaking of performance, whoever designed the background visuals for this deserves a freaking award. I actually get a taken in by how awesome the "virtual" band's performance is, its pretty compelling to watch your singer stage dive and keep singing while he's getting surfed over the crowd. or the slow motion power slide that your character performs right on time in the music. The visuals blow Guitar Hero away, without question.
I would recommend beating the game right away and that way whenever you wanna have fun as a group, one of you login as that saved name. But aside from that just remember not to wake the neighbors.

I bought this w/o the instruments because I already have the GH guitar, and I read all the troubles with the RB guitar. Funny thing is, so far I have spent more time singing than playing guitar. It is really fun. This is a really great game if you have an interest in music, or just dream of being a rock star.Best Deals for Rock Band for XBox 360
I purchased the stand alone software because I have the wireless guitar from GH3 already. I've heard that there's issues with the rock band guitar so I guess I'm glad I didn't buy the special edition. I am thinking about picking up the drums though. Anyways, I have to say that this game is really awesome. I like the new format with square notes rather than the circle ones and it seems like the timing is better. I've found that I'm able to hit the notes more consistently than in GH3. Also, I have to say that the track list is far superior than any of the GH games. I've played through the solo career mode already and I'm getting ready to start playing the multiplayer. I've only played it on medium thus far and I think that it was a little too easy compared to GH; I'm probably going to start trying to play the songs on hard or expert mode next. One thing I didn't like about this game is that you have to play all 5 tracks for each show before moving onto the next ones. The nice thing about GH was that you only had to play 4 of 5 so if there was a really awful song, you could just skip it. There was a couple of shows in ROck band that I didn't really care for even one of the songs or really disliked one but you have to play them all. This is probably not a big deal for some people who play all the songs no matter what but it was a little bit annoying to me.Anyways, I can say that this game is definately worth picking up and I think it's far superior to GH3
