This review is from the perspective of a player who is not a hardcore collector of the figures who must collect them all.
Basically all a lightcore has to offer is the following:
1. New Pose
2. Lightcore effect(it lights up on the Portal)
3. Has the light glow in game where the light is on the figure(Giants only not first game).
4. An in game AoE screen clearing attack upon entry when placed on the Portal(usable once per level, I heard it does 100 dmg per enemy but I'm uncertain I'll have to test it out).
5. Cost $2+ more than the non-lightcore versions.
This is basically the same in game Drobot as the S1 version except it has a tiny light on his back that is quite disappointing, and he has a screen clearing lightcore effect that can be used once per stage. The only way you can see the single light on his back is if you face it backwards on the POP. The could have done so much more with this lightcore like at least make his eye's light up but they did not. There are video's on youtube that show how disappointing the light up effect is on Drobot.
There is no Wow-pow and no switchable paths on the Lightcores. This is not a problem for the new characters: Jet Vac, Chill, Pop Fizz, and Shroom Boom, but for the characters from the original Skylanders who also have S2 versions with wow-pows it makes this lightcore only desirable for the collector or someone who really loves Drobot. Had I known the light on the Drobot lightcore was so disappointing I would have skipped him for the S2 version.
Also the packaging is misleading..the lightcore reposes: Drobot, Hex, Prism Break, and Eruptor all work on the original game the same as the S1 versions. It's the newer lightcores to Giants that do not work on the first game.

My 8 year old loves this game and I'm not ashamed to say I enjoy playing it with him. Arrived on time and priced right.
