I have had the Turtle Beach XLC headset for a month now and have a very firm grasp on what it's all about. First and foremost, I have seen a number of people complaining that the chat is poor. This is because these people did not realize that the game sounds (effects, character voices, music, etc) must be turned down in the game settings menu--and then the chat is controlled by the TV volume. You need chat to be louder than game sounds, right? Well this is how you separate it!

Once properly adjusted, you can easily see why the XLC is an excellent headset and well worth the $29 price tag. In fact, the audio quality is outstanding for such a low price tag! Mic chat is clear as a bell--both incoming (when set up properly) and outgoing as well. Plus, the noise cancelling earpads are a very welcome feature to have since it allows you to completely focus on the game. For competitive FPS gamers like me, this is extremely useful.

Two things to keep in mind with the XLC:

1) Be sure to properly configure the game/chat balance as described above.

2) You must have a headphone jack on your TV (or home sound system receiver) to provide adequate power to the headset speakers. If you don't have a headphone jack anywhere to power the speakers, then I would strongly recommend the X1 or X11 instead.

I got mine last week and I had the same thing happen. I could not hear anyone talking on the game chat, I was gonna send them back but I gave 1 more try. I found out that your tv volume is the chat volume so just turn the tv volume up, but don't use the splitter cable that comes with it because that keeps you from turning up the tv volume. You have to turn down the in-game sound a little bit but it does work great. The best headset for less, it's a must buy if you can't spend a lot.

overall this is a good headset. much better then the standard xbox 360 headset. I haven't got any feedback or static through this headset. and other player don't complain about hearing the Tv through it. this may because it draws the audio directly into the headset. but even when i did have the sound from the game really loud it picked up my voice and still when i asked players about the background game audio they said they couldn't hear it and i sit very close. the boom mic is adjustable but it works best if it directly in front of your mouth. i had it point straight up and was told they could barely hear me. One thing i did want to know but no one had stated was that if you plug this into you xbox 360 controller and other players can hear you however you can not hear anything through the headset game music or players voice. The voice chat isnt very loud. the volume button on the headset itself turns down both game music and voice chat which isnt helpful. its hard to hear voice chat over the game volume unless you and your party are yelling at each other through an intense game of wat have you. however i was playing Gears yelling and they were playing something with less action and i could not hear there "indoor voice" at all. To change this you have to go into the game options and lower the game volume settings to balance it out. something else i also recently found out is that if you using this headset while watching netflix or a movie and you are in party chat but not netflix party chat it will silence everyone. the Microsoft wireless headset does not do this. This headset ear buds are indeed very soft and the sound is very good. its not just sound from ur left and your right side it actually does sound like its coming from behind right moving closer and or circling around you. The headset does feel a bit snug on my head. the cords to connect the headset to a headset jack on the tv is really long. Overall this is a good headset for the price. the sound is good the voice clarity is good, its fairly comfortable but i wouldn't recommend for casual gamers. this is more for gamers who play long session in intense online shooters or squad base games.

Honest reviews on Ear Force XLC Stereo Headset with Mic - Xbox 360

So, I purchased these today from BestBuy(more expensive, but faster return) with the plan on testing them out. I just purchased a 40" tv that does has 2 headphone outputs and a Toslink optical out, and I thought that these would be the best starting place to test headphones on. I am in the process of getting an Xbox 360, so I was unable to test the microphone on these unfortunately.

However, after only about 1.5 hrs of use, these have I have noticed some unfortunate problems with these:

1. I was also considering the X11 headset, but decided to start here as it was cheaper. However, I did have the

chance to wear the X11 in-store, and I thought the padding was excelling. While I knew that the XLC wasn't as

good, I thought it would be ok. I was wrong. These have caused my ears to hurt, and due to the vinyl/pleather

material on the cushion, it began to irritate my ears and cause them to itch. This isn't something that I

foresee being able to acclimate to for hours at a time.

2. The inline volume control does only adjusts the total volume, and it does not appear to raise it very much. I

set my tv to what I would consider the threshold of "too loud", and at the maximum volume on these, it wasn't

even close to too loud, which means that trying to raise the volume in a situation where it is needed won't be

terribly possible.

However, despite the issues that I found to be too major to consider keeping these, I was pleasantly surprised by two things:

1. Most(if not every other) TurtleBeach headset requires an additional USB cable to be involved to power them.

These did not, which I apparently hadn't realized. It was a nice surprise, and I imagine the USB requirement

could be a deal breaker for some.

2. The mic was surprisingly flexible, and it can rotate almost a full 360 degrees(going down, not up, I learned).

This is something that doesn't appear to be very common with gaming headset.

Overall, this headset wasn't exactly bad, but it wasn't for me. Hopefully this helps someone.

Ok so I ordered my Turtle Beach Ear Force XLCs back in November and I absolutely love them! They far exceeded my expectations and have greatly improved my gameplay. I mainly use them for COD/Black Ops but I cant wait to use them in other games like Forza Motorsport 3. The sound quality is unmatched. Its crisp and clear and you can adjust it. I bought this model not only because its affordable but you can hear the game chat along with the game sounds. I've even used it with my iPod and was totally amazed. So I give it 4 stars.
