This game is incredible. I have a love/hate relationship with it. There is a learning curve to it with regards to drifting, which is a required skill if you wish to place in any of the races. At first I hated it, cars kept spinning out from oversteer... or I'd smash into a wall due to understeer. Went searching on forums to see if there was any kind of trick to it, general consensus is PRACTICE! Which is what video games are about. That frustrating, wanting to throw your controller through the wall because it "JUST WON'T DO WHAT YOU WANT!" feeling followed by pure ecstatic nirvana when you finally nail it.
This game is a sure departure from the original Ridge Racer formula where you're basically on rails and the cars float around the circuit. Bug Bear, the developer behind Flat-Out really knows how to make a racer!
There is an interesting aspect to the game that happens when nailing several drifts in a row and boosting through opponents, low-walls and shortcuts it seems to transform into a melee of flashes and hectic explosions that evoke pure adrenalin. Like raging out, hulk-status. Not in a cheesy way, but it does remind me of Mario after he gets the flashing star.
Another little thing I like is that once a level loads... it's loaded. You can restart the race with zero-load time. Which is great for when you fail into a wall and get dropped back to 12 place on your last lap.
A minor quirk that doesn't detract too much from the game is every once in a while after boosting though a shortcut or after a "takedown" and you get the (skippable) cinematic, upon resuming racing it might throw you into a wall or into the next curve at a very unsalvageable angle. This however happens rarely, but frequently enough to mention.
I am about half-way through the un-lockable levels of the city, I have yet to try the level editor and I don't play multiplayer. I will update this review if anything more needs to be said about it, or once I try the level editor.

Yep, nothing like a real driving simulation, this is fantasy driving 101. I mean how real is Call of Duty part whatever? This is actually fun though. I didn't have success for the first 3 races, but it was enough fun that I kept going and won my 4th race. I also upgraded after a couple of losing races and got a new car and track, although I stunk. That was nice, and along with the fun, kept it entertaining. After the newness, I don't see myself racing this nonstop, but I can see popping it in for 4-5 races once/twice a week or so for a pure set of adrenaline races. It's kind of like a cross of Blur and a modernized Ridge Racer of old, meaning much better graphics. It's got cars galore, fancy, powerful, etc, but like blur you destroy stuff. You don't destroy it the same way, but you can boost your car right through buildings or other cars, and even without boosting, you can smash through quite a bit...again, this isn't a real driving simulation. Oh, as a final note, the sounds are amazing to me, I jacked up the surround, and IMO, no other racer has the sound effects of this bad boy!Best Deals for Ridge Racer Unbounded - Xbox 360
