Now I don't care what anyone else says, even though River Raid was designed by a woman it turned out to be one of the greatest games released from Activision. It was banned in Germany untill recently when Activision wanted to release a greatest hits collection for PS3 so they had it renamed and re released. It was always my favorite Atari game as a kid in the early 80's and still remains to be one of my favorites because it stands the test of time so well. The controls are perfect and the ever changing river scenery is really cool compared to games that dont even have second levels. The object of the game is to blow up the bridges crossing the river to halt enemy advancements and blow away any enemy helecopters and ships on the way keeping an eye on your fuel for the refueling stations that become few and far the further up the river you go and unlike most Atari games this game actually does have an ending. A very fun game and the more skilled at it you become the more it becomes addicting. Happy gaming my fellow River Raiders.

River Raid is a vertically scrolling shmup. The game field takes the shape of a river, which widens and narrows and has other terrain features to avoid. At the end of each river section is a bridge; destroying these bridges is the object of the game.

The controls work nicely here, with acceleration and deceleration to navigate the trickier sections. Sound plays an important role here as well, as you can hear your engine roar up or down based on your speed.

Along the way you've got enemy ships, helicopters, and jets to destroy. These give extra points, or can be avoided. Watch for targets at the entrance or exit of a narrow section, as these are common ambush points.

Finally, we have the fuel dumps. Fly over these to refuel, or shoot them for more points. Or, if you're in a particularly nasty mood, fly over them to refuel, then shoot them just before leaving. Thanks suckers! *insert evil grin here*

There are no breaks between river sections, nor is your fuel refilled between stages. You have to stay on your toes at all times and keep the fuel gauge up.

This is a really fun game, with good variety and a steady difficulty curve. It may seem easy at first, but some of the later sections definitely get harder.

Honest reviews on River Raid

I know some people who really enjoy this game. I on the other hand do not. I find it repetitive. You are just going up this river and everything can kill you and you have all these fuel options that may get you killed if you go for it. And when you finally do want to pick up a fuel canister, a bad guy manages to jump in front of it and get destroyed in the cross fire. Yeah...I really don't like this game, but I do own a copy. And it does play on the 7800!!!
