During installation, the game needs a key. After installation, the game tries to tie that key to an EA or Spore account. I tried to register the game with the first key and it said the key was invalid. I contacted Amazon, and they issued me the second key. It was also invalid. When I contacted EA, they told me to login using the email address used to register the keys. The problem was, I hadn't registered it yet, and the email addresses were not mine. EA was not helpful at all.
Instead of requesting more keys, I asked for a resolution from Amazon. They resolved the issue to my satisfaction.
Googling the problem revealed hundreds of people that experienced the same issue. It seems those who buy the game cannot play because someone else has already used the key illegally.
No matter the price, this level of frustration and hassle are not worth it. Please save yourself from a headache and look elsewhere.

I was bored enough the other day that I decided I wanted to try out this game. I gotta say, there are an awful lot of negative reviews out there on it so I was a bit nervous that I wasted my money. I've been addicted to it! There are so many stages of life to play with, you can start out with your species as an embryo and take them all the way to evolving so much they can travel in space! It's not a game you can beat overnight because the stages take a while, it involves either becoming allies with other species on the planet (You can select any one of the multiple planets they provide) or conquering them into extinction. If you connect your game to the internet you can download other people's creations, houses, city halls, creatures, vehicles, land vehicles and others, tribes, and much much more. You also get to visit other users' species on the planet instead of just maxis defaults. But even with Maxis defaults, you will probably never play the game and start a new species, and run into the same species twice, there are thousands. The level of customization in-game is so amazing that your creations will never look like someone else's.
Have fun, you'll be addicted!

The game is interesting and fun if you are into the kind of simulator it is. It isn't quite what I was hoping for, but I would give the game 4 stars. If you like simulators this game is for you.But then again, because of EA/Amazon, I have access only to offline play.
Now, EA and Amazon just don't seem to care about this game, although its likely more EAs fault since Amazon probably has a key database from them. Numerous people have run into the dreaded invalid key issue, and I am one of them. For bobs sake, just replace the method of account authentication to something that can't be so easily generated or cracked (*looks at Spore developers glaring*). You are making the case for piracy more appealing, when DRM prevents people who actually buy a product from being able to use features of it just because someone else has already generated their key using a VB application written by a 12 year old.
Anyways, I have emailed both Amazon and EA, and am waiting a response. But this kind of thing, for any product, is not acceptable.
